As noted in the diagram below, the 5500PT uses a PTO driven fan to blow product through an air delivery system. Grooved metering rollers accurately meter product from the hopper into the venturis. Air passing through the manifold and venturis draws the product into an airstream and delivers it to the boom where it is spread onto the field by the deflectors. Product application rate is governed by either a sixty speed metering gearbox which is driven by a hydraulically engaged ground drive wheel or by a hydraulically driven rate controller. Figure 4-1 Page 11 Operation Pre-Operation Checklist Before operating the applicator, inspect the following areas. If adjustments are necessary, see the Adjustments and Service chapter of this manual for specifications. Valmar The minimum hydraulic flow requirement is 23 U.S. gallons per minute. The hydraulic fan drive motor is equipped with a case drain which must be plumbed to the tractor hydraulic system for proper operation. See Figure 4-2 for correct hookup of the pressure and return lines. 1. Ensure that the applicator is securely hitched to a tractor with a minimum of 80 PTO horsepower with a 1000 RPM PTO shaft. Use a drawpin with a retainer that is rated for towing the load. 2. Attach the safety chains to the tractor. 3. Ensure that the PTO shaft is securely connected to the tractor and to the applicator fan drive. 4. Inspect the hopper and metering system for debris. Clean if necessary. 5. Make sure that all guards and shields are in place. 6. Ensure that all tires are at the correct pressure as noted in the Adjustments and Service chapter. 7. Ensure that all hydraulic lines are connected securely to the tractor remotes. A check valve is installed on the hydraulic fan drive to allow the fan impellor to freewheel to a stop when oil flow is cut off. The fan must not be operated without a check valve in place. Operation Air Restrictor PTO Fan Engagement An air restrictor must be used whenever metering product with the 28 groove red roller with the 5500PT. Bolt the restrictor over the fan inlet as shown in Figure 4-3. Continue to run the fan at 1000 RPM. With the tractor engine at low idle, engage the PTO clutch gradually to prevent fan belt slippage. Slowly increase engine speed until proper PTO speed of 1000 RPM is achieved. The fan must be run at this speed at all times for proper material delivery. Do not exceed this speed or fan damage may occur. Hydraulic Fan Engagement The speed of the hydraulically driven fan is set by adjusting the tractor hydraulic flow controller until the pressure gauge at the front of the hitch registers 30 inches of water column pressure. The fan must be run at this speed at all times for proper material delivery. Do not exceed this speed or fan damage may occur. Page 12 Figure 4-2 Valmar Operation 5. Fold the boom tips into position until they lock in place. 6. Reverse the above procedure to fold the booms. Lock Pin Figure 4- 3: Air Restrictor Boom Unfolding Unfold the booms as follows: 1. Unlatch each boom by lifting up on the boom transport lock handle on each side of the hopper as shown in Figure 4-4. 2. Remove the lockpin shown in Figure 4-5 from the boom lock lever. Figure 4-4 3. Swing the booms into the field position by hand or hydraulically if the hydraulic boom fold is installed. 4. Lock the boom into the field position by forcing the boom lock lever into the overcentre position as shown in Figure 4-5. Secure it in this position with the lock pin. Figure 4-5 Wheel Tread Adjustment (Walking Beam) If equipped with walking beam axles, the wheel tread spacing on the 5500PT is infinitely adjustable in a range between 81” and 99” with the 16.5 X 16.1 tires, and between 72” and 90” with the 9.00 X 20 tires. Adjust the wheel tread as follows: 1. Jack up the one side of the rear of the applicator frame until the walking beam tires are off the ground. 2. Loosen the clamping bolts indicated in Figure 4-6 until the axle beam is able to move freely. 3. Place the point of a pry bar in a suitable hole in the adjustment plate and pry the axle one way or the other until the tires are at the correct spacing. 4. Tighten the clamping bolts securely. 5. Repeat for the other walking beam of the applicator. Page 13 Operation Valmar Slide the gear set out of engagement with the metering roller gears. Reinstall the cotter pin to lock the gear set in the disengaged position. Figure 4-6 If your 5500 PT is equipped with a single axle option, the wheel spacing is factory set and should not be adjusted or the wheel drive engagement system will not line up with the tire properly. Wheel Drive Engagement In order to engage the wheel drive, activate the correct hydraulic remote and keep it engaged until the remote kicks out. Now the metering rollers will turn when the applicator is in motion. Reverse this procedure to disengage the wheel drive. Ensure the wheel drive is disengaged before transporting the applicator. Failure to do so may result in severe damage to the ground drive tire or other metering components. Half-Width Application If the operator wishes to make a ½ width application, each metering roller can be disengaged by removing a cotter pin from the gear set on the bottom shaft (See Figure 4-7). Page 14 Figure 4-7 Setting the Mechanical Metering Gearbox Up to 60 product application rates are available with the mechanical metering gearbox. Three mechanisms need to be set to select the desired application rate: the input ratio, the range and the speed. Input Ratio Four input ratios can be selected by pairing the 12 tooth gear with the 34 tooth gear or the 19 tooth gear with the 27 tooth gear on the side of the gearbox. The available ratios are Ultra Low, Low, Medium and High as shown in the following diagrams. Select the desired input ratio as follows: 1. Raise the gearbox shield. 2. Select the pair of gears corresponding to the desired input ratio and install them, in the correct orientation, on the shafts indicated in the diagrams using linch pins. 3. If the appropriate gears are not on the shafts, they can be found on the storage shaft on the opposite side of the gearbox. 4. Store the two unused gears on the storage shaft. Valmar Figure 4-8: Ultra Low Operation Figure 4-10: Medium Figure 4-11: High Figure 4-9: Low Range Selection 1. Release the clip on the gearbox shifter and lift up. 2. Move the range lever to the “A” or “B” position. 3. Check for proper alignment of the top and bottom gear clusters. Lock the speed shifter into place by pushing down on the clip. Page 15 Operation Valmar Each revolution of the pesticide metering rollers applies 22.46 cubic inches of material (.013 cubic feet). For every revolution of the hydraulic motor, the fertilizer metering rollers will turn .107 turns. For every revolution of the hydraulic motor, the pesticide metering rollers will turn .043 turns. For every revolution of the hydraulic motor, the fertilizer metering rollers will expel 15.78 cubic inches of material (.009 cubic feet). Figure 4-12: Range & Speed Selection Speed Selection 1. Release the clip on the gearbox shifter and lift up. 2. Move the speed shifter sideways to the correct numbered detent position. Drop the speed shifter into the detent slot. 3. Check for proper alignment of the top and bottom gear clusters. Lock the speed shifter into place by pushing down on the clip. Hydraulic Metering Drives The 5500PT can be equipped with a hydraulic metering drive system, whereby application rates are set by regulating the oil flow to a hydraulic motor which drives the metering system. Valmar offers either a Char-Lynn or a Rawson hydraulic metering drive system. Certain parameters of the 5500PT metering system need to be entered into the metering rate controller for accurate application: Each revolution of the fertilizer metering rollers applies 157.8 cubic inches of material (.091 cubic feet). Page 16 For every revolution of the hydraulic motor, the pesticide metering rollers will expel .97 cubic inches of material (.0005 cubic feet). Char-Lynn Metering Drive The Char-Lynn motor has a displacement of 2.8 cubic inches per revolution. The end user must purchase all other components of the metering rate control system separately. Rawson Metering Drive The Rawson hydraulic motor has a displacement of 3 cubic inches per revolution. Detailed instructions for setting your Rawson rate controller are included in the 5500PT Rawson kit and in the Rawson Rate Controller Instructions. Maximum Speeds The 5500PT should never be towed faster than 20 mph when loaded. Disc Marker The disc marker can be placed in transport or field position as shown in Figure 4-13. Valmar Operation Figure 4-13: Disc Marker Operation Page 17 Operation Page 18 Valmar Valmar Calibration 5 – Calibration Calibration determines the actual product flow rate of your applicator. Generally the metering rate of fertilizer, granular product and seed is predictable as long as its properties are consistent. However, metering rate variations are possible and may be caused by: • • • • Manufacturer’s quality control Damaged or worn metering components A change in product density due to settling during transport Variations in seed size and density due to changes in growing conditions For these reasons, product flow rate charts are intended as a guide only. Calibration is essential for accurate application. The applicator should be calibrated the first time a new fertilizer or granular product is used and periodically thereafter. For seed, the applicator should be calibrated each time a particular batch of seed is applied. When applying seed mixtures, consult the New Product Calibration instructions on page 30 to determine appropriate gearbox settings. Use the following procedures to ensure your applicator is metering product as precisely as possible. Refer to the Operation Chapter of this manual for specific instructions on setting the metering components. Calibration Set-up 1. Pour sufficient product into both metering bottoms for the calibration. 2. Remove the venturi bottom plates by unhooking the rubber latch from each plate as indicated in Figure 5-1. Figure 5-1 3. Insert a venturi inlet cover into each venturi as shown in Figure 5-2. This cover prevents product from falling into the manifold during calibration. Page 19 Calibration Figure 5-2 4. Place a container underneath each venturi to catch the product to be calibrated. 5. Remove the calibration crank from its storage position shown in Figure 5-3. Valmar Figure 5-4 7. Set the metering gearbox for the desired application rate. 8. Ensure that the ground drive tire is disengaged from the trailer tire. Rotate the ground drive tire in a counter-clockwise rotation as shown in Figure 5-4 until product begins to flow into the calibration container. 9. Empty the calibration containers back into the hopper. Place the empty containers underneath the venturis. Calibration Figure 5-3 6. Install the calibration crank on the ground drive tire as shown in Figure 5-4. 1. Turn the calibration crank 54 times for a 40 foot boom and 60 times for a 36 foot boom. 2. Weigh the calibration container. Subtract the weight of the empty container. Multiply the product weight by 5 to arrive at the application rate in pounds per acre. The crank turns are based on the number of tire revolutions in 1/5 of an acre (271 ÷ 5 = 54.2 for a 40’ Boom). The product weight is then multiplied by 5 to yield the result for application on one acre. If your 5500PT is equipped with a hydraulic metering drive, follow the calibration instructions provided by the manufacturer of your rate controller. Page 20 Valmar Calibration Calibration Results • For the mechanical metering drive, compare your calibration results with the Product Flow Rate Charts on the following pages. For hydraulic metering drive, compare your calibration results with the target rate set on the controller. A difference in flow rates could indicate the following: • • • • • The metering drive gearbox is not properly set. The flow rate characteristics or density of the product has changed. Metering rollers are worn or damaged. A mathematical error was made during calibration. Data was incorrectly entered into the rate controller. A sprocket in the metering drive system has been changed in the past. See Figure 5-5 for the correct sprocket layout. If a difference still exists after eliminating the above possible causes, contact your Valmar dealer. Charts for the 5500PT can also be found on Valmar’s website: www.valmar.com Figure 5-5 Page 21 Calibration Page 22 Valmar Valmar Calibration Page 23 Calibration Page 24 Valmar Valmar Calibration Page 25 Calibration Page 26 Valmar Valmar Calibration Page 27 Calibration Page 28 Valmar Valmar Calibration Page 29 Calibration Valmar New Product Calibration When applying product that is either not listed on the Product Flow Rate Charts (such as grass mixtures) or that is inconsistent with the charted values, it is necessary to create a flow rate chart. Use the following procedure to prepare flow rates for all possible gearbox settings. Calibration Set-up Follow the same procedure as given at the beginning of this chapter. Calibration 1. Set the gearbox to Low Ratio, Range B, Speed No. 8. At this setting the gearbox input to output ratio is 1 to 1. 2. Turn the crank 54 times for a 40’ boom, and 60 times for a 36’ boom. 3. Weigh the calibration containers. Subtract the weight of the empty containers. Multiply the result by 5 to arrive at the calibration weight. 4. Record this weight on the blank Product Flow Rate Chart in the Calibration Weight column. 5. Multiply this calibration weight by the Gearbox Adjustment Factors listed on the chart in order to calculate the actual application rate in pounds per acre for all the other gearbox settings. Example Calculation (Table 5-1) A grass mixture is to be applied at 1.8 pounds per acre. A calibration was performed in which 1.2 pounds of product was collected. This was multiplied by 5 as instructed in Step 3 to arrive at a calibration weight of 6 pounds. Therefore, the application rate was 6 lbs/acre in Low Ratio, Range B, Speed No. 8. This weight was recorded in the Calibration Weight column of the blank charts. This weight was then multiplied by each Gearbox Adjustment Factor in the chart to calculate what the flow rate would be at all the other gearbox settings. It was found that Ultra Low Ratio, Range B, Speed No. 3 was the correct setting for 1.8 pounds per acre of the grass mix. The gearbox was set to Ultra Low Ratio, Range B, Speed No. 3 and an applicator calibration performed as a final check. Product Gearbox Adjustment Factor Cal.
