The Interlochen Area includes Chum’s Corners, Grawn, Interlochen, Karlin, Lake Ann, and Honor; all neighbors of the nearby Traverse City and the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Out of doors, Interlochen is rich in natural beauty, showcasing endless opportunities for activities such as camping, fishing, boating, golf, hiking, skiing, and snowmobiling to mention a few. In addition you will find a diverse array of accommodations including Bed and Breakfasts, rental cottages, resorts, AH and motels, complimented by a variety of dining and shopping opportunities. Nowhere is Interlochen’s beauty and culture more apparent than at two of the area’s main attractions: Interlochen Center for the Arts, an international camp of arts education, and the Interlochen State Park, which stands as the oldest and largest state park in Michigan. Come to Interlochen and discover your new favorite place! istory of Interlochen What brought people to the Interlochen area over 120 years ago? It was not because it was so naturally beautiful (which it was), it was not because it was an excellent place to enjoy swimming, fishing, boating and winter sports (which it is) and it was not because of the lovely music which can be heard through the pines (which there is). Our state tree, the White Pine, is what first attracted people to the area. These trees, along with an abundance of hardwoods, grew especially well here. Green Lake Township and its school was organized in 1883. The Village of Interlochen was platted February 17, 1890. It was at this same time railroad logging began here, bringing two railroad lines, the Manistee and Northeastern (M & NE). The Chicago and West Michigan (C & WM) lines came about a year later. It is said the name “Interlochen” derived its name from an interlocking switch which controlled the intersection where the Pere Marquette and M & NE railroads crossed. In the early 20th century, logging declined in the area. Then Joseph Maddy arrived. In 1928, he created the National High School Orchestra Camp, which was renamed the National Music Camp and has grown to become what we know today as the world famous Interlochen Center for the Arts. – excerpt from “An Oral History of the Interlochen Area."
