It is a city with a deep history, best known as the home of Coca-Cola and the birthplace of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It is a diverse city with southern charm and one you will not get tired of exploring! To the right you will find a map of Atlanta. Circling the city is Interstate 285, which is also referred to as “The Perimeter.” The term “ITP”, is used to describe something that is inside the perimeter, and “OTP”, to describe something that is outside of the perimeter. The blue star on the map indicates Emory main campus’ approximate location, which is in the Druid Hills/North Decatur neighborhood. The red star indicates the approximate location of downtown Atlanta. The green star indicates the approximate location of Hartsfield-Jackson International airport, which is one of the busiest airports in the nation. The MARTA, Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, is Atlanta’s public transportation system which is consists of both bus and metro rail service. It functions inside the perimeter and can help you navigate the city for a fare of $2.50. More information on this will be provided in the “Navigating Atlanta” section of this guide. 3 Neighborhoods Surrounding Emory Below is a map showing the neighborhoods in closest proximity to the university with short descriptions of what you can find there. Druid Hills (5-10 minutes from campus): Emory is located in the Druid Hills neighborhood. This area is mainly residential with several large gated apartment complexes. Decatur (10-15 minutes from campus): This “small town” is located 10-15 minutes away from Emory. Downtown Decatur has restaurants, bars, and boutiques that Emory students frequent. Morningside/Virginia-Highland (10-15 minutes from campus): At the center of the Morningside/Virginia-Highland neighborhoods is North Highland Ave, a trendy street with a lot of bars Info made available through: http://blog.promove.com/atlanta/atlanta-neighborhood/ and restaurants. Candler Park/Inman Park (10-15 minutes from campus): These artsy neighborhoods have houses and small apartments for rent. Located between these two neighborhoods is the Little Five Points district with restaurants, hipster bars, and secondhand shops. Midtown (20 minutes from campus): Midtown consists of mostly high-rise living or duplexes near Piedmont Park - a large park located close to downtown with biking and walking trails and a lot of open green space. The main drag in Atlanta, Peachtree Road, runs through Midtown, and there are bars and clubs along both Peachtree Street and nearby Crescent Avenue. Buckhead (20-25 minutes from campus): Buckhead is Atlanta’s main shopping district and most ritzy neighborhood. 4 Navigating Atlanta Google Maps: A Tool for Planning your Trip Google Maps is a great resource to use when trying to plan your trip/outing. There is an application for iPhone and Android Phones available so you can take it on the go! There is a function on both the website and application that helps you plan your trip if you plan on using public transportation or walking/biking to your destination. Visit http://maps.google.com to try it out! MARTA: Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit System If you do not have a car you can use MARTA, the public transportation system, to get around! Standard fares are $2.50 and include transfers between buses and metro trains. You should bring cash if it’s your first time riding MARTA and do not have a Breeze Card/MARTA Card. Breeze cards can be purchased and reloaded at the metro stations with cash or credit cards. If you plan on using MARTA frequently it may be better to buy a monthly student pass, which can be purchased at the DUC Info desk or online. For more information on all things MARTA download the app on your phone or visit their website: http://www.itsmarta.com/ Zipcar Zipcar has made it easier for college students to get around by providing a car-sharing program where you pay to use a vehicle by the hour. They have a wide variety of cars available right on campus that you can use! For more information or to register visit: http://www.zipcar.com/emory Uber & Lyft Uber and Lyft are both transportation companies where you can request a driver through a phone application to take you to your destination. Rides with these companies are typically significantly cheaper than what a taxi would cost (if you use UberX). You also have the option of splitting fares on the application with friends! 5 Places to Visit—Downtown Atlanta Centennial Olympic Park http://www.centennialpark.com/ 265 Park Ave W Northwest Atlanta, GA 30313 (404)223-4412 About: This a 21-acre park in downtown that was built for the Olympics which were hosted in Atlanta in 1996. It is used to host festivals and concerts throughout the year and during the winter you can find an ice skating rink here. It is a gorgeous park to visit both day and night and close to other Atlanta attractions such as The World of Coca-Cola, The Georgia Aquarium, and The CNN Center. The World of Coca-Cola http://www.worldofcoca-cola.com/ 121 Baker St Northwest Atlanta, GA 30313 (404)676-5151 About: This is a museum exhibiting the history of The Coca-Cola Company that started right here in Atlanta! You can taste Coca-Cola products from all around the world, take a picture with the iconic polar bear and learn more about how Coca-Cola is exactly made and packaged. How to get there: Driving, MARTA and Emory Experience Shuttles (usually once per semester). 6 Georgia Aquarium http://www.georgiaaquarium.org/ 225 Baker St Northwest Atlanta, GA 30313 (404)581-4151 About: When this aquarium opened in 2005 it was the world’s largest, although it no longer holds that title you can find over 100,000 animals representing 500+ species! It even houses whale sharks, beluga whales, manta rays and bottlenose dolphins! Days & Times of Operation: Sunday- Friday, 10:00am-5:00pm. Saturday, 9:00am-6:00pm. Many of their programs are filmed in the newsrooms and studios found throughout the building. The InsideCNN Studio Tour will take you behind the scenes of the newsroom, you might even get a peek at the live recording of one of their shows! How to get there: Driving, MARTA and Emory Experience Shuttles (usually once per semester). 7 The Sundial Restaurant, Bar & View http://sundialrestaurant.com/ 210 Peachtree St. Northwest Atlanta, GA 30303 (404)659-1400 About: Located at the top of the Westin Hotel in downtown, this restaurant has a 360-degree panorama observatory, which provides the perfect opportunity to admire Atlanta from all angles. If you dine here you can get complimentary access to the observatory, otherwise for a small fee of $8 you can take all of Atlanta in! Days & Times of Operation: Sunday-Thursday, 10:00am-10:00pm. However, basketball games aren’t the only thing that take place here, it is also a popular concert venue where you can see some of your favorite artists and band when they are on tour! It is known for its Rialto Series which has featured some of the best national and international jazz artists, as well as prominent world music and dance groups and companies. It is known for its Rialto Series which has featured some of the best national and international jazz artists, as well as prominent world music and dance groups and companies. How to get there: Driving and MARTA. 10 Woodruff Park Peachtree Street Northeast Atlanta, GA 30303 (404)546-6744 About: The six acres that encompass this public park was purchased anonymously and then donated to the City of Atlanta by Robert W. Woodruff. In the park you can find two fountains, a performance pavilion, a fitness station, a chess court, an open air reading room and several monuments. Cost of Admission: None. The National Center for Civil and Human Rights (Coming soon!) http://www.cchrpartnership.org/index.html 555 Ivan Alley Jr Boulevard Suite 510 Atlanta, GA 30308 (404)991-6970 About: This will be a 42,000 square foot facility dedicated to exploring stories of civil and human rights both in indoor and outdoor dynamic spaces. How to get there: Driving and MARTA. 11 Places to Visit—Midtown Piedmont Park http://www.piedmontpark.org/ 1320 Monroe Drive Northeast Atlanta, GA 30306 (404)875-7275 About: This is 189-acre park located between Midtown and Virginia Highlands is one of Atlanta most popular parks. The possibilities of things to do in this park are endless from picnics, to bike rides, or fishing. It is the site for many Atlanta festivals and has also been the used as sites for several Hollywood films such as The Change-Up and What to Expect When You Are Expecting. The Fox Theatre http://foxtheatre.org/ 660 Peachtree Street Northeast Atlanta, GA 30308 About: This is one of the main performing arts venue in Atlanta. Every year this venue hosts more than half a millions patrons and 250+ shows. Its shows range from broadways to standup comedy shows and ballets. Its distinct Moorish design is reminiscent of a time when it was planned to be a Shrine Temple, which instead became a movie theatre and then ultimately one of the premiere performing arts venue in the US. During the winter, they have a beautiful Garden Lights Holiday display that is frequented by many Atlantans. The Varsity http://www.thevarsity.com/index.php 61 North Avenue Northwest Atlanta, GA 30308 (404)881-1706 About: The Varsity is a must-visit restaurant during your time in Atlanta. It is embedded in Atlanta’s modern history and has become iconic. It is a drive-in restaurant so your standard meal would include burgers, hot dogs, milkshakes etc. Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama have all visited The Varsity while presiding in office. Although it is a chain restaurant the original and most frequented one is this on in Midtown. It is comprised for four arts divisions, The High Museum of Art, Alliance Theatre, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the 14th Street Playhouse, as well as a non-profit organization, Young Audiences. You will learn about bank supervision and regulation, how monetary policy directly affects you and how the Federal Reserve helps the economy run smoothly and helps maintain the stability of the US financial system. In fact, they have won numerous awards for their burgers since their inception 20 years ago and have been featured on Man vs. Food and other “Best Restaurant” themed television shows. They have two locations, one in Midtown and the other in Little Five Points (for which the information is available above) known for its iconic laughing skull entrance. **You must be 18+ to enter the restaurant/bar, no exceptions due to Georgia’s Smoke Free Air Act (restaurants had to choose between letting minors in or letting patrons smoke, The Vortex chose the latter). Carlos Museum which is right on campus). Its mission is to encourage a greater appreciation of the planet and its people through its exhibits about natural history, meant to both entertain and educate. It houses an IMAX theatre and every Friday they have a Martinis and IMAX event where you can enjoy a movie, live music or a DJ and a few drinks. There are also special exhibits such as Carter’s Nobel Peace Prize and full replica of the Oval Office, including a copy of the Resolute Desk. Days & Times of Operation: Monday-Friday, 9:00am-4:45pm. Oakland Cemetery http://www.oaklandcemetery.com/ 248 Oakland Avenue Southeast Atlanta, Georgia 30312 (404)688-2107 About: The Oakland Cemetery is the oldest cemetery in Atlanta as well as one if its largest green spaces. Throughout the park you can find impressive mausoleums, sculptures and memorials reminiscent of Victorian, Neo-classical, Greek Revival, Egyptian and Gothic architecture. Early builders of the city, Civil War soldiers and Civil Rights pioneers are among those that rest here. Days & Times of Operation: Monday-Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm. Saturday-Sunday, 9:00am-dusk. Cost of Admission: Free How to get there: Driving and MARTA. 18 Grant Park (Zoo Atlanta and Atlanta Cyclorama) 840 Cherokee Avenue Southeast Atlanta, GA 30315 (404)624-0697 About: Grant Park is the oldest park in Atlanta and also the term used to describe the historical Victorian neighborhood surrounding it. In this park you can also find Zoo Atlanta and the Atlanta Cyclorama, which is a panoramic painting of the American Civil War Battle of Atlanta. Days & Times of Operation: Not available. Cost of Admission: Free. How to get there: Driving and MARTA. Stone Mountain Park http://www.stonemountainpark.com/ 1000 Robert E. Lee Drive Stone Mountain, GA 30083 (770)498-5690 About: Stone Mountain is literally large mountain made of quartz monazite. It is more than 1,600 feet in elevation and about 5 miles wide in circumference at the base. On a clear day you can see the Atlanta skyline from the top. You can choose to take a cable car to the top or a hiking trail that is available. Catching the sunrise here is true a beautiful sight! The park surrounding this mountain is perfect for walking, running, biking, fishing and even golfing! How to get there: Driving. 19 Six Flags Over Georgia https://www.sixflags.com/overgeorgia 275 Riverside Parkway Southwest Austell, Georgia 30168 (770)948- 9290 About: Six Flags Over Georgia is a theme park that hosts the Warner Bros. Studios characters including Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and the Looney Tunes along with Batman, Superman and the Justice League. There rides to appease both rollercoaster fanatics and those who enjoy milder rides so it is perfect for both children and adults. How to get there: Driving and Emory Experience Shuttle (once in the Spring semester). 20 Festivals in Atlanta Atlanta is a city with many yearly festivals celebrating anything from music and food to the different cultures represented in the city.
