Dan Neece and the Enterprise High School Jazz Ensemble
Dan Neece has been the steadfast bandleader at Enterprise High School and
represents Norcal music as the Shasta Union High School District Music
Department Chairman. Enterprise High School is known for its outstanding
marching, jazz, and concert bands, which have been directed by Neece since
the 1980s. He also directs the Starship program, a pop-oriented music program,
which gives well-received performances throughout California. Neece has
traveled with his award-winning Enterprise groups extensively, mixing hard
work with some good old-fashioned fun in music. The Chico Jazz X-Press is
thrilled to share the stage with Neece and the fabulous Enterprise High School
Jazz Ensemble.

I’m a Fool for Jazz
Guest Artist Grant Levin
Grant Levin lives in the Bay Area and is one busy pianist, working almost every
night of the week. Levin was formerly a member of the CSU, Chico Jazz Faculty,
teaching piano, music theory, and other related jazz courses. One of California’s
best jazz pianists, Levin is an artist with Beeswax Records and has worked with
major jazz figures such as Terence Blanchard, Bob Berg, Richard Stoltzman,
Paul Romaine, Mark Patterson, Ravi Coltrane, and many others. Levin’s recent
recording endeavors include his last release with Beeswax Records, Riego, and
his previous CD success, The Bust.
Guest Artist Michael Newman
Outstanding tenor saxophonist, woodwind specialist, and composer Michael
Newman currently resides and performs regularly in the Albany, New York
Capital District. An Arcata native, Newman is certainly no stranger to CSU,
Chico. He studied music here from 1993–97, leaving to tour extensively with
the popular swing band Blue Plate Special. After some significant road life,
Newman returned to CSU, Chico in 2002. In spring 2003 his senior recital
represented the school’s first all-jazz recital, making a broad impact and
setting a top-shelf standard of performance for future students pursuing jazz
studies. While in Chico, Newman played with countless professional groups,
encompassing almost every style of music. Those familiar with the Chico music
scene may recall his work with groups such as NewmanAmiYumi, Los Papi
Chulos, the Skyliners Big Band, Cornerstone, Blue Plate Special, and many
others. Newman has also performed extensively in the Los Angeles and Las
Vegas areas, as well as internationally in the United Kingdom. The Jazz X-Press
is thrilled to welcome Newman back to Chico.
