Bishop’s Letter
As I write, many of you will currently be attending Lent groups as part of the
Diocesan Lent course this year, entitled ‘Faith at Work’.
‘Faith at Work’ is a clever title: it encapsulates our calling to live out our faith
in whatever context we find ourselves – at work, home, school, church, etc. –
and it also reminds us that faith itself is constantly ‘at work’ within us. As we
go through life, each one of us is living out our calling to be a disciple of
Jesus wherever God has set us. Thus our faith is informed by our life’s
journey. But the converse is also true: that journey as the people of God is
informed by our faith, and so we can truly say that our faith is ‘at work’ within
us.
While this holds true throughout our lives, Easter brings it into sharp relief.
The desolation of Good Friday and the absolute finality that it suggests are so
enormous that they can leave us feeling cut off and adrift. A fissure is
created, a gap opened up between what we thought we knew to be true and
the place in which we now find ourselves.
It is when that kind of disjuncture happens that our faith really gets to work
within us as we ask the questions about where the journey of faith is taking
us, and what it is asking of each one of us.
No other event in the Christian story asks this of us in the demanding way
that we encounter in the raw power of the Easter story – and no other event
shows the extent of God’s love for us as the gift of the death and resurrection
of Jesus at Easter.

A Pilgrimage To The Holy Land
March 2014
Korazim (Korazin or Korazon) was a prosperous village at the time of Jesus’s
ministry in Galilee. It is a little way inland in the hills, but still close to the North
Western shores of the lake. It is near to Capernaum, a village where Jesus
spent a lot of time, and in close proximity to the supposed sites of the
Multiplication of the Loaves and Fishes and the Mount of the Beatitudes.
In Luke 10:1-16 we read of Jesus cursing the villages of Korazin, Bethsaida
and Capernaum because they did not welcome his teaching:
“Woe to you Korazin! Woe to you Bethsaida!… But it will be more bearable
for Tyre and Sidon at the judgement than for you.”
The village was deserted following an earthquake, but the impressive, black,
basalt stone remains of the village and its temple, remain an authentic site
where we can truly tread in Christ’s footsteps.
My wife Jane and I have visited Korazin four times over a number of years
and the quiet, undisturbed, hillside setting possess a peace, tranquillity and
beauty that always touches our hearts.
I wrote this poem following our visit to Korazin on March 6th this year as part
of our Pilgrimage to the Holy Land.

Korazin / Korazon
Korizon, a place apart,
Nestled in the folded hills,
Hidden from the water’s view,
In Galilee I find you still.
Deserted now, the people gone,
No sound of laughter, bustle, talk.
Community of still, dark stones
Is all I see as round I walk.
But stones shout out, to me at least,
And share their burden, history.
We only know them for the curse,
Because they spurned his ministry.
Now, here, amongst the basalt bones
Where once life prospered warts and all,
The curse has gone, time has forgiven,
I stand in thought beside a wall.
If He could walk amongst your stones,
Where once he felt your hardened heart,
Would the peace that I feel now
Welcome him, make him a part?
And where’s the well-spring of your peace
That now you share with all who come?
Could it be that Christ himself
Has come to stay at Korizon?

So many thoughts flood my mind as we approach another Easter. As I
attended yet another Church Annual meeting I know how blessed I am to be
surround by such an amazing group of people who give so much love in all
that is done not just for a past but for a living way of life that allows God to
work in the world he loves so much.
To see that also in the various parts of the Holy Land in the crowded places
as well as in the deserted ones to feel that even with all the powerful forces
that try to divide us the simple wooden cross still wins the way of love. So
many memories but among them is the narrow streets of the old city of
Jerusalem, walking the “Via del a Rosa” along the shops and stalls, the
smells and noise as Jesus would have done.
100 years ago the world was working itself up to war and we are entering a
more uncertain and dangerous period too. Yet all your generosity over the
last few months for the Philippines and Syria shows that there is a better way.
As we prepare to start a new phase in the life of our Mother Church St James
Spilsby after the reordering and of our Parishes with the new United Benefice
and Team Ministry I know that we have only just begun and pray for the
strength to carry on as Jesus did offering what he had and beyond hope
bringing new life to all.
With the birth of a new granddaughter Georgia I know that life is so full of the
new life of Easter that the only way is to follow on.

The Parish Foundation Course.
Discovering our faith, discovering God's call.
It is my intention to run the Parish foundation course in the Bolingbroke
Deanery starting after Easter.
The course is designed to help people discover more about their Christian
faith and how that relates to ourselves, our church and our society; and whilst
doing so allow people to reflect upon their life's story, to reflect upon their
Christian journey, and to discover God's unique call in their life.
I hope to hold meetings at my own house where people can be seated
comfortably in the warm and where there is the opportunity to break off for
coffee and biscuits.
The course has a booklet for each person which has a small amount of
preparatory reading before each session followed by group work which will
consist of discussion and paired work with time for reflection and prayer.
There will be plenty of opportunities to discuss your opinions and share
personal experiences.
The parish foundation course is a wonderful opportunity to spend time with
like-minded people and learn more about the Christian faith, but the course
can also lead to lay ministry and lay leadership within the church should you
discover that God calls you in this direction.
The course runs over 15 sessions which will be run weekly following the
school term times and will take breaks for holidays. Should you be interested

COFFEE MORNINGS
Coffee mornings will be starting again in Church on Saturday, May 3rd from
10.00 -12.00 until October 4th. Ladies and gentlemen will no doubt be
queuing up to use the new kitchen so there will be plenty of help! Please look
out for the rota at the back of the Church so you can sign up to help with this
fund raising event. Coffee and cake and a good chat. What a lovely way to
spend a Saturday morning.
HELP!
Each week 2 readers, 2 people to take the elements to the altar and a
sideperson are needed for the 9.30 service. 20 people are prepared to take
up the elements but there are only 9 people who are prepared to read and
only 9 people prepared to act as sidesperson. It would be really helpful if
more people would come forward to read or be a sidesperson and if anyone
would like to take up the elements but is too shy to ask we can never have
too many people to do that.
There is only 1 person acting as sidesperson each morning and we would
really like to have 2 on duty to ensure people are welcomed properly. There
is no person on duty at Family Service and we would like to rectify this. With
only 9 offering to do it at the moment this is difficult.
It is intended to have a training session for sidespeople and readers in the
near future so now is the time to think if you are the sort of person who could
read the lesson, welcome people into the Church, give out hymn books, take
up the offertory or just be a friendly face to newcomers. If you think you can
help in any way Margaret Cook would be pleased to hear from you as soon
as possible. Thank you.

THANK YOU
Thank you to all those people who have helped to mop and dust the Church
each Saturday morning during the reordering of the Church in preparation for
the Sunday service. It has been a difficult task as the dust lingers in the air
and settles again immediately but the Church has looked very presentable
and has enabled the congregation to sit on nearly dust free pews.
A small band of ladies has been cleaning the Church every few weeks but
more help will be needed now there are toilets and a kitchen to look after. It
is quite an enjoyable task as after the hard work tea and scones are usually
served! If you are interested in helping in any way please ask any of the
cleaning team and you will be made very welcome. Thank you.

ERESBY NEWS
Eresby Hall has had many improvements in the last 12 months. Our current
project is creating a walk-in shower down stairs which should be completed
by the middle of March.
On November 12th 2013 the Care Quality Commissioners inspected the
following as part of an unannounced routine inspection.
Consent to care and treatment; care and welfare of people using the service;
cleanliness and infection control; requirements relating to workers complaints.
We were fully compliant in all areas and the full report is available on the
CQC website.
In February we held our first relatives meeting and although only a small
number attended it was very successful. At the meeting we had offers of
choirs and bands to entertain the residents.
February 1st was Dignity Day and we focussed on "All About Me" books and
life history's of residents. Volunteers, staff and families enjoyed putting the
books together.
Two of the residents will be 100 years old in a few months time.
March 17th - 21st is National Hydration and Nutrition Week when we are
going to have a smoothie day, cream teas and much more.
National Care Home Open Day is on June 20th when Eresby Hall will yet
again be opening its doors for people to come in and have a look at what we
have to offer. We look forward to seeing you.

The Halton Holegate Benefice
Healing Service.
The inaugural benefice Healing Service was celebrated on the 16th March at
St Andrews Church, Halton Holegate, and it is intended that there will be a
healing service at the same church at six o'clock every third Sunday of the
month.
The healing ministry at St Andrews Church is for everyone, whether they
attend any church in the benefice or not, for we all need healing in some
way. Through the healing ministry, Jesus Christ meets us at our point of
need. Every form of suffering can be helped in some way through this
ministry.
Just as Jesus proclaimed the good news of healing through his ministry
of healing, which were demonstrations of the effects of God’s kingdom
breaking through into this world, so, too, the Church’s ministry can also
be described as one of healing – the healing of ourselves, and of our
relationships with God, with one another and with our environment. That
is why we hear phrases such as “the healing of society” or “the healing of
our divisions”.
The ministry of healing is the ministry of prayer, word, sacrament and
pastoral care, with the laying on of hands and anointing, by which the
Church acts as a channel of Christ’s healing grace to give people that
fullness of life that he intends for them. Dr Gareth Tuckwell described
healing services as a place to know the love of God restoring us in every
cell of our being, every thought of our mind and every pang of emotion to
enable us on every step of life’s journey.
The healing service at St Andrews Church is not just for those people
who desire healing in their own lives; it is a special time where people
can pray for other people to be healed, either from within their families,
their friendship circles or the wider world. The service is also available for
people who wish to pray for situations and events in the world which they
would desire to see healed.
The next Healing Service at St Andrews Church in Halton Holegate will
be at 6pm on Easter Day, Sunday, the 20th April. It promises to be a time
of reflection, prayer, music, candlelight and delighting in the presence of
a healing God.
We extend an invitation to all of you who read this article to come and
join us at St Andrew’s Church on the 20th April.

We are now well on our way through Lent looking towards Easter. On
Friday April 11th we are holding a quiet afternoon entitled "Preparing
for Holy Week", led by Rev Jenny Dumat. This will start with a soup
lunch at 12.00 noon, concluding with a cup of tea at 4.00pm. The cost

Thoughts about April
"Oh, to be in England now that April's there". So wrote the poet Browning.
Well, we are in England right now so let's take a look at why he saw such
wonder in this month.
The winter has almost passed and Spring is in the air; the daylight gets
longer every day and there is an air of expectation around us. Have you
ever considered how plants really know when to leap into life or when
animals know to come out of hibernation? Why has our atmosphere got
warmer and why does it rain less? (if we are lucky). Cheery, yellow
daffodils, small furry animals, blossom on trees which looked dead
previously and a hot summer sun, (again, if we are lucky), fruits ripening in
the garden - I could go on but the words of a popular hymn instantly come
to mind. "All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small ---- the
Lord God made them all. Doesn't that just say everything we need to know?
The realisation that mankind played no part in the creation of our beautiful
planet may be difficult to accept for some. Its splendour however, can never
be denied. God is the creator and humankind has the privilege of being his
gardener. He produces and we maintain.
I suppose I should really be writing about Easter during April. The
crucifixion is a cruel, unattractive picture but I see the outcome as yet
another of God's creations - that of a new way of life to assist us on our
spiritual journey. How wonderful is that?
Our creator knows exactly what he is doing ----unlike us a lot of the time!

Lent, Holy Week & Easter cannot be ignored by any Christian and I do pray
that we come to Easter Morn 2014 knowing just how much we are loved and
forgiven by the 1 cross and 3 nails. Sometimes just two or three words bring
us to our senses. We are very distracted by life and all its commitments,
worries and responsibilities. We have too much to do and too little time, so
many things must be achieved, yesterday. Nothing will wait and room for God
& prayer gets pushed to the side; “ I will tomorrow.”
The other side of that, of course, is the relentless pursuit of happiness,
whatever the cost, me, me, me, is all that matters and our faith takes a
constant hammering.
Our tiny group of parishes and our deanery do much to make the worship of
God relevant, we all try very hard to encourage and enable.
We all have to think very hard about whether we wear Christianity like an old
comfy jumper or, whether we actively promote the gospel of Christ in our
lives.
Hopefully our lives are enriched by the words and actions of those around us
and our loved ones.
A student at Lincoln Minster School asked me for some information as to my
role as priest, the questionnaire was quite comprehensive, I share one of my
answers; I have always had a calling to the ordained ministry and I believe
this to be from God. As a priest I am involved in all aspects of parish life, my
role is very varied, but theologically priests are called to be shepherds of
God’s people. To ensure they follow the teachings of Jesus Christ in their
lives and to be with them at the important stages in their lives. Helping this
student started me thinking about Sully and his inimitable ministry and a
couple of things he wrote for his funeral service stirred my thoughts; As a
priest I want to acknowledge the gift people have given me in letting me
share their pilgrimage.
I hope I’ve been a support and encourager of all who want to take seriously
what God is up to in their lives.
Sully was a great motivator and an inspiration to so many people.

As we travel the road of Lent, so many things have to be thought about and
worked through, we are all in this wonderful world together. The assaults and
trials of life are for sharing and working through together.
May we all come to Easter Morning, having travelled together, and know with
absolute certainty that for each and every one of us –

We have much to celebrate.
We moan, we throw up our hands and, sometimes, we can be downright rude
and hostile as fundraising is mentioned. Our attempts can be mocked and
declared; “a waste of time.” Actually many things are achieved amidst the
relentless round of raising funds. (Chapped hands, empty purses, aching

backs and legs notwithstanding.) People get together, work together, laugh
together and commit of their time, energy and love to ensure that their
communities are alive, welcoming and friendly. To all of you good people
who are busy baking, gardening, cleaning, sewing, typing, painting, talking,
singing, reading, studying, stewarding and all those other things.
To all of you I say a huge thank you. The South Ormsby Group of Parishes
owes its past and its future to you. Fundraising is relentless but somehow,
up to yet, we have managed it and enjoyed doing it. Life is for living and the
people in this tiny group certainly give it their best shot.

A reminder it would be lovely to see as many people as possible at the
Coffee Morning on Tuesday 22 April at the home of Mavis & Albert Maw,
New Dawn, Station Road, and Legbourne from 10am -12 noon. Funds from
this will contribute to the continuing delivery of patient care by St Barnabas
Lincolnshire Hospice in the East Lindsey area. This is the second year the
Coffee Morning has taken place organised in conjunction with Pat & Leonard
Brumpton, whose daughter Michelle and family were cared for and supported
by St Barnabas. As well as a section of delicious refreshments there will also
be a tombola, cake stall and more, donations for these are welcome.
I would like to thank Mavis and Albert, Pat and Leonard for all their hard work
in organising and hosting this morning. Events like these in the heart of

communities really do make a difference both in raising funds to support the
work and services of the Hospice and also awareness of the wide range of
services the Hospice provides.
I will be at the Coffee Morning so please do come along and if you would like
to learn a little more I would be delighted to talk with you. Alternatively if you
know of any community groups however small or large who would be
interested in receiving a talk about our work I would be delighted to do so. I
still find many people are not aware of the wide range of services we provide
and I have had a number of conversations where people have said `I wish I
had known about your services….’ so please do get in touch. There is no
fee, for such talks a donation may be made at the discretion of the group.
