ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
JUNE 15, 2008
Events at The Catholic Charismatic Center
The first reading is filled
with enough good news
for a lifetime. It is exactly
what the recently escaped
slaves in Egypt needed.
They were three months
into what would be a
forty-year journey, or sojourn, in the desert. The
first eighteen chapters of
the book of Exodus tell us
of the Hebrews’ ordeal in
Egypt. They were nobodies with no name, no living
history, no possible future. But God rescued them
with a mighty outstretched arm and led them here to
the foot of this mountain, a mountain that would live
in memory—Mount Sinai. Today’s reading is the
introduction to the covenant forged on Sinai that created a people. Through Moses the ex-slaves are reminded of God’s tender care: “I bore you up on eagle’s wings.” This in itself is amazing, but it gets better. The life-saving liberation from slavery led to
something. Or rather, to someone, for God’s objective is not just to free the enslaved. That is too small
a kindness. God brought them “here to myself.”
They are to be dearer than any other people. And
they are to be a kingdom of priests, a holy nation.
Herein lies their responsibility. On the third day, the
covenant spelled out that responsibility—the Ten
Commandments on Mount Sinai. This covenant will
establish a framework of mutuality.
As Paul reminds us in the second reading, in Jesus’
lifeblood we have been saved from ourselves. The
compassion of Jesus is evident in all the Gospels. As
he has done, so must we do. Like the first apostles
called and sent out, we are called and sent out. The
gifts we have received, we must give. They are not
for hoarding; they flower in the giving. We do too,
actually, though this is not the point. To focus on our
own self-fulfillment often causes us to stumble
badly, or at least to get all tangled up.
“What’s in it for me?” isn’t usually a question on
Jesus’ mind, nor should it be on ours. Our business is
doing as Jesus did, being his ambassadors in our
world. We have been given the gifts for it, and we
are in the right place at the right time.

XI DOMINGO ORDINARIO
pecadores".
