AUCTIONEER’S NOTE: AFTER OPERATING SUSQUEHANNA MANOR AS A BED AND BREAKFAST , AND HOSTING MANY WEDDING RECEPTIONS AND LOCAL EVENTS FOR MANY YEARS,THE HERRS HAVE DECIDED TO RETIRE FROM THIS VENTURE PROVIDING A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR A POTENTIAL HOME OWNER OR BUSINESS OPERATOR. 3 History of the Marietta Victorian Mansion IN THE 1870’S, BENJAMIN FRANKLIN HIESTAND (known as B.F.), was a local business owner in the thriving river town of Marietta. Marietta had become very prosperous due to the river, the canal, the railroads and also because the town had 3 of the 4 Bessemer iron furnaces east of the Mississippi. As B.F. Heistand’s wealth grew, he decided to purchase “the farm” outside of town as a summer respite from the heat and noise of Marietta. The original house was what is now the existing kitchen, back sitting room and bath. After an extensive addition by B.F., the property became grand enough to be pictured in the Lancaster County Atlas of 1875. Because of his wealth and access to fine woods, he was able to install exquisite parquet floors and also to use chestnut… the premier wood of the day…for the entryway and the grand staircase. Special tile was imported for both fireplaces and for the main bathroom. The tile around the library fireplace was treated with a “gold wash”, a process where ground up gold was added to varnish and painted onto the tiles. The curtains in the main parlor are pure silk and were installed by the Hiestands. B.F. and his wife Martha, had eight children. Each of his children inherited a property, with his son George inheriting Susquehanna Manor. George, his wife Elida and their son Andrew made the farm their home. They hired C. Emlen Urban, a renowned local architect known for his 4 work on the Watt & Shand building, Hotel Hershey and John Wanamaker’s in Phila. to “gild the lily.” George dearly loved the farm and in his will directed that it should never be sold. However, after remaining in the family for several years after his passing, it did eventually fall into disrepair. In 1985, the property was purchased by Willis and Martha Herr. The Herr’s did extensive restoration to bring the property back to its former glory and soon opened it as a successful Bed and Breakfast, wedding and party venue. THE COLLECTION: The Herr’s have enjoyed many years of collecting and buying antiques to furnish the manor, most of which are being sold today. Willis Herr’s significant collection of Tramp art was prompted by childhood memories of “tramps” coming to the back door at his family’s farm and asked to work in exchange for some food or a place to sleep. Young Willis was fascinated by these highly skilled wayfarers. Martha spent significant time assembling an extensive collection of Flow Blue China. She not only enjoyed collecting but also using these beautiful pieces for family dinners. While many pieces are special to her, her highly prized piece up for auction is the portrait of Abraham Lincoln. Simon Cameron, who was in President Lincoln’s Cabinet, resided in the area. The painting was in Susquehanna Manor when they purchased the property. 5 1 2 3 6 4 1 Two Pieces Period Style Oriental China Covered Ginger Jar Height 5 1/2”, Diameter 5”; Plate Diameter 7 1/4” 3 Very Good Water Fire Extinguisher Marked “Autofyrstop” with Original Paper Labels and Original Wall Bracket 2 Two Pieces Cast Iron John Deere Tractor (Contemporary), Length 8 1/4”; Steam Horse Drawn Wagon with Wooden Barrels ( Contemporary), Length 30 1/2” 4 Good Silver Plate 5 Piece Tea Set by Webster Wilcox “Joanne” Pattern Having Tea and Coffee Pots, Sugar, Creamer and Matching Handled Serving Tray. 7 5 6 5 Print of Young Girl in Dress Holding a Bunch of Turnips in One Hand and Cabbage in a Basket in Other. 6 Pair of Bedroom Lamps with String Bead Decoration and Brass Ornate Shade Cover.
