Joe was perhaps not a classic musician or
philosopher but the lines from this song spring
from my childhood memory when I reflect upon
the significance of imagination and empathy.
If we cannot imagine another person’s life, it is
very difficult to have any empathy for them, or any
compassion. This in turns determines how we will
respond to the individual.
Sir Ken Robinson* puts forward the idea that as a
human race, we have a lot to lose from what he
calls ‘the exile of feeling’. He believes that the
greatest strengths of humanity is ‘the power that
flows from a ‘deep resource of imagination’. He
states that imagination and compassion are the
two qualities of humans that need to be ‘switched
off’ in order to carry out torture.
It is too easy to limit the idea of imagination to
being creative in the literature and the arts.
Imagination is also not just a gift you are born
with that is given in defined amounts. The
development of our imagination is crucial.
Teachers continually foster growth in imagination.
Recent work in Communication & Culture involved students studying the behaviour of people in the Middle Ages. The
learning was been greatly enriched by attempts to understand why people did what they did. The Ordeals of the
Medieval period are a great example. Throwing a person into a river, then declaring them innocent if they drowned and
guilty when they did not, seems ridiculous to us now. If you can imagine a community that saw drowning as an
acceptance by God into his essence because you are pure, therefore you will go to heaven, and non-drowning as a
rejection by God because you were guilty and would suffer the fires of hell for eternity, the situation takes on a very
different interpretation.
In our daily living, our treatment of each other will be far more compassionate and life giving if we can work hard at
imagining a person’s situation.

Friday is a day of celebration for us at the College – ‘CCW Day’. The day will begin with Fr Dennis celebrating Mass
followed by an address from Mr Sebastian Robertson on the importance of mental health, then the annual soccer
game between Year 12 students and staff and concluding with a concert for all students in the Arts Centre. The
theme is “Childhood Dreams” and all are invited to dress up in line with this theme. It promises to be a great day.

Recently the world celebrated the 50 anniversary of another dream, that of Dr Martin Luther King.
Martin Luther King was a Baptist Minister. He became involved in trying to get people to change their attitude of
hatred and prejudice. He always preached nonviolence despite the threats, bombings, stabbings and other violence
that was done to him. In 1968, Martin Luther King was shot dead as a result of his stance on racial equality.
One of his best-known speeches was delivered at the largest rally ever held in the United States - when a quarter of
a million people gathered in Washington in a Civil Rights demonstration. He said:
“I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia
sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave-owners
will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not
be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character.
I have a dream today.”
Let us pray:
Father, sometimes I am too quick to draw conclusions about other people, and I fail to see many of the qualities in
individuals.
Remove from me any prejudices that might lead me to think of myself as “better” than someone else.
If anyone should be negative towards me, inspire me to remain positive towards them.
Because we are all different, there are many things I need to learn from others, and so I ask for the gifts of
understanding and wisdom and a clear vision that will lead me to treat others as I would like them to treat me. Amen.
Let’s each of us think of two people in our lives at home or in school or work today whom we need to value and
respect a little more. In silence, let us think of ways today in which we can improve those relationships.

DA VINCI DAY 2014
da Vinci Day will be held on Wednesday, 18 September in the Catherine McCauley Arts Centre. Our community
celebrations will consist of the following:

A Music themed trivia competition titled ‘I’ve Got the Music in Me’ – Year
Levels within our community have battled it out for supremacy with the victors
being Year 9 and Year 12. The whole community will participate as well with the
winning LM group winning the ‘Leo’, our perpetual da Vinci day trophy. Mr John
Walker will the compere ‘with the most’ for this event.
•
‘I’ve Got the Music in Me’ will be followed by the presentation of da
Vincian of the Year. This award is presented to a Year 12 student who has
demonstrated the ideals and values of our founder.
•
A shared morning tea will be held after the formalities have concluded.
Each LM group has been asked to provide either drinks (Primas), fruit, biscuits or
cakes/muffins. Last year the generosity of our families was overwhelming.
Students will also be allowed and encouraged to wear casual clothes on the
day…preferably blue. We are asking each student in our community to bring a
Gold coin donation, proceeds of which will be given to an orphanage in Thailand.
Our da Vinci Day for 2014, looks like it will be another great day of fun, hijinks and
laughter!

KARLIE REED – MERCY INTERNATIONAL
The last week of this term sees Karlie Reed, Year 9, heading to Thailand with the aid group
Mercy International. Her ‘team’ of 25 are going over to work in three orphanages. The first
orphanage being visited is in Khon Kaen. This orphanage cares for children and teenagers
that have HIV/AIDS. Karlie will be assisting helping with their move into a new building, and
taking all of the children out to tea in groups.
Karlie will then travel to an orphanage for children of all ages in Phetchabun, situated in the
mountains. Whilst there, Karlie will work with some of the older children in their English
language classes.
The third stop on Karlie’s journey will be in Phrae, about three hours from the famous city of
Chiang Mai. The orphanage there is home to almost 40 children, aged 0-7 years. Many of the
children cared for here are the children of families who are either too poor to care for them or have a parent with
HIV/AIDS.
We wish Karlie and her fellow travellers well on their very courageous journey and look forward to seeing her back
here at Catholic College in Term 4.

YOU RAISE ME UP – EAST TIMOR IMMERSION 2013
From August 12 to 21, Catholic College students Rhiannan Eckert (Year 10), Kayla Riley, Teagan Palmer, Bridie Celin,
Shona Kelly (all Year 11), and Zac Reid (Year 12) travelled with teachers Rob Horner and Fiona Dyball to experience the
culture and community of one of Australia’s poorest but closest neighbouring countries, East Timor, or “Timor Leste.” Our
partners, Catholic Mission, provided our wonderful guide, John Tweedie, and our experienced Timorese guides and
drivers, Nazario and Beau.
This immersion experience allowed all participants to live with the people and have a small taste of everyday life in many
different communities, from the city of Dili to the village of Balibo. Some of the real challenges faced for Westernised
participants included the harrowing stories of the Timorese people who had been through so much, squat toilets,
handwashing of clothes, determined mosquitoes, boiling or buying all drinking water, and roads with giant pot holes that
turned short journeys into long treks. In Balibo, there was power available for six only hours a day. Most showers were a
bucket and scoop, called a “mandy.”
Our group visited and stayed in orphanages, kindergartens, schools, villages, guesthouses and retreat centres and had the
opportunity to meet many different people. The group especially loved playing with the children. You could not help but be
changed and moved by the people, their love and zest for life, their resilience, and their gratitude and welcome.
Shona Kelly writes:
“The people of Timor were just so happy and willing to sing to us and weren’t embarrassed to get up and
dance in front of a group of foreigners – music and dance is a very big part of the culture in Timor. A
group of 15 teenage boys performed a dance for us to the music of You Raise Me Up at Hera Farm, a
working farm for orphan boys near Dili. I will never forget the way these boys took such pride in the way
they danced to the song and how much the words meant to them. We then danced and sang for them
and they especially loved learning the Hokey-Pokey!
The experience has really inspired me to be more confident in everything I do, rather than shying away
from opportunities. I was considering the other day how different I would be as a person if I didn’t go to
East Timor and I would never take back the opportunity and the experience of going. I learned so much
about both my peers and myself, and by the end of it we were all a little Timor family and knew each
other well. We would have sing-alongs in the troupee (the car we travelled in) and could easily have
conversations with each other about anything. I loved Timor and would happily do the trip all over again.”
Catholic College Wodonga funded a pump and a cover for a well at a kindergarten and gave many donations, including
one for an organization dealing with domestic violence, and a guitar for Nazario and his family.

LIBRARY NEWS
The Library celebrated ‘Book Week’ this year with two events. Firstly on Wednesday, 28 August, the Premiers’
Reading Challenge Achievers lunch was held in the Arts Centre. 114 students finished the Premiers’ Reading
Challenge and received invitations, the celebration was a great success with lots to eat and drink, much noise and
enjoyment.
Principal Dave Seiter presented certificates to the students including the ten students who read 50+ books. These
students also received a book voucher for their effort – David Campbell (Year 9, Chisholm), Ryan Coates (Year 8, da
Vinci), Natalie Hood (Year 8, Hollows), Rebecca Campbell (Year 8, Chisholm), Anastasia Hummerich (Year 8,
Hollows), Annie Jarratt (Year 8, Hollows), Samantha McLean (Year 10, MacKillop), Caitlin Ward (Year 8, Chisholm),
Tim Watson (Year 7, Gandhi) and Sarah Wickham (Year 9, da Vinci).
This year 350 students actively participated in the Challenge and 4004 books were read, an amazing effort, well
done to every one who read. Thank-you to the Learning Communities for their support and to Schweppes for
donating the drinks.
The Premiers’ Reading Learning Community Challenge continues to be a 3-way tussle between Hollows, da Vinci
and Chisholm. The winning Community will be announced next week.
Then on Thursday, the Literary Morning Tea for staff was held during recess in the Library. This is a joint effort
between the English and Library staff. Great food, the traditional quiz, new books to browse and borrow helped make
this an enjoyable and fun event.

EXTENDED COMPETITION FOR SCHOOL YEARBOOK
COVER - DUE FRIDAY, 11 OCTOBER
This competition is open to all students in the College. Any students interested
in submitting their de sign/s need to obtain the specifications sheet from Jane
Powles. The design must be aesthetically pleasing, dynamic and reflecting
aspects of school life. It may be manually scanned and then completed on the
computer or produced solely by using computer technology. Good luck with
your designing! Your cover design should be submitted to Jane Powles by
Friday, 11 October. There is a wonderful prize for the winner.
RESPONSIBLE SERVING OF ALCOHOL COURSE (RSA CERTIFICATE)
We have organised another course running on Tuesday evening, 19 November, 6.00-10.00pm.
Details of venue, etc can be obtained on payment. This is open to anyone. Students need to be at least 17 years old
and their RSA becomes active on their 18th birthday). All are welcome. First 25 who pay their $50 to Louise Symons
Wellbeing Leader will be registered. A handy certificate to have when looking for employment.
YEAR 8 MATHS ‘HELP’ SESSIONS
Year 8 Maths 'Help' sessions are currently being conducted on Wednesday afternoons from 3.30pm – 4.30pm in the
‘8’ Space. This session is not compulsory, but we are giving the students a specific time when they could seek extra
help from an N&L teacher about their classwork, homework or maybe to seek some extension. If you think this may
help your child, please encourage them to come along next Wednesday at 3.30pm.

HELP IN SENIOR MATHEMATICS
The Mathematics Faculty is offering to help Mathematics students in Years 10-12, Monday to Thursday in M1 in the
Mercy Centre, after school from 3.30pm to 5.00pm. This allows students the opportunity to seek assistance from a
member of the Mathematics Faculty outside the classroom environment. M1 also offers a space for students to work
collaboratively on their Mathematics. Research has shown that small study groups enhance students’ learning of

Term 3 is always a very busy time for the Performing Arts and this year is no exception. With Battle of the Bands, Catholic
College Day, VCE Masterclasses and study days in Melbourne, The Festival of the Sacred, multiple performances,
including The Vibe, and our wonderful School Production of Pride and Prejudice, there has been no shortage of
opportunities for students to perform, and to enjoy watching quality performances.
Congratulations to Year 12 Music student Andrew Blackman and his band Listerdale who took out the Wodonga FReeZa
Battle of the Bands for this year. Thanks must go to Wodonga Youth Services, who offer our students and the local
Wodonga community such great performance opportunities in a supportive and healthy atmosphere. You can next hear
Listerdale perform this Friday at The Vibe at Artspace, 160 Lawrence St, Wodonga. The show runs from 6.00-9.00pm and
also features other local bands; cover charge $6.50.
We were privileged to have Aron Lyon from the Australian National University working with VCE Music Performance and
Music Investigation students this week. This built on a terrific visit from ex-Catholic College student, James Rindfleish, who
has almost finished his Bachelor of Music at Box Hill Institute in Melbourne. Jim specialises in drumkit but is also an
excellent advisor on making a viable living as a working musician in the vibrant and competitive Melbourne scene. Jim
worked with all senior music students on drumkit performance, and gave an open workshop and talk for all senior music
students. It was an informative and worthwhile day.
Students from the VCE Music class attended a VCE preparation day in Melbourne with outstanding music educator
Deborah Smith. This full day was open for all VCE Music Performance students across the state, and Catholic College was
one of the few regional schools represented. Well done to all the Year 12 Music Students who took the opportunity and
survived a long day of travel. Thanks also to Sheryl Phillips who accompanied students with Fiona Dyball on the day.
Students from the Catholic College Chamber Choir again were secondary leaders at the huge Festival of the Sacred at
Victory Lutheran College. This Festival, now in it’s fifth year, sees over 800 students from all Catholic feeder schools in the
North East Deanery gather to celebrate choral music, song and dance. Catholic College students performed Evening
Prayer by Humperdinck in three-part harmony, as well as performing the gospel song, Eagles Wings. Thanks also to Luke
Godfrey for accompaniment on the day.
Our fantastic School Production for 2013, Pride and Prejudice, showcased the hard work and great talent of our drama
students across the different year levels here at Catholic College. All students were welcome to audition and there were
many students who took the opportunity for the first time to be involved in some way in a school production. The show was
visually sumptuous, with a hardworking team of teachers, parents and student helpers sewing beautiful costumes and
constructing a very professional set. Sound and lighting was ably delivered by our VET Music Students with the help of
Albury Sound and Lighting and our new VET Music Teacher, Paul Gibbs. Students handled the demands of the language
of the play with dedication, realising a sophisticated, entertaining and warmly received show. Congratulations to Sara
Hagarty, our new drama teacher, in her first year here at the College, and to the committed team of students, parents and
teachers who worked so hard over Terms 2 and 3 to bring the production to life.
There is one last performance for the term after Catholic College Day this Friday. All are invited to the Jazz Basement on
the Wodonga Causeway on Wednesday,18 September from 7.00-9.00pm to enjoy the last Year 12 Music Performances
for 2013. Please see the flyer at the end of the newsletter for more details. It will be an inspiring night of music.

PRIDE & PREJUDICE
GANDHI WINS CROSS--COUNTRY CARNIVAL 2013 (YES IT’S TRUE)!!!
A beautiful autumn day was again provided by mother-nature for our students and staff as they arrived at Willow Park for
the 2013 Cross-Country Carnival. After a 7.00am start from staff, the course and finishing area were presented in great
condition for the arrival of the runners. Students from all year levels ran and participated with great enthusiasm and energy
in both individual and relay events. After their events students also played games and enjoyed a magnificent sausage
sizzle (cooked by some of our VET students and staff). It was a truly enjoyable day for the students who attended and
participated.
The competition at the top of the leaderboard was very close all day between
Malone, Gandhi and da Vinci, with the relays again proving the decider. For
the first time since the inception of the six communities, four yearS ago,
Gandhi was victorious for the first time in a Sports Carnival. Well done Ghandi.
This was truly the highlight of the day! It also now means that each community
has won a sporting event. Malone, finished in second place just 13 points
behind and the da Vinci powerhouse finished third. Thank you to those senior
students who participated in the carnival. You demonstrated great leadership
and showed that you can balance schoolwork and sport in your senior years.
On an individual note, congratulations to Bradley St John (Year 11, Gandhi),
Kirsty Deacon (Year 11, Gandhi) and Alana Cartner (Year 12, MacKillop) who
were able to defend their age championship resultS from 2012.
Everyone who participated was able to do so because of the many hours
teaching and non-teaching staff spent before, during and after the event
helping with community meetings, organising equipment, marshalling, timing,
recording etc. Without this commitment the carnival wouldn’t run as smoothly
as it does each year. A special thanks to all the PE staff and Perri Fenton the
PE/Sport Trainee for all their extra work in making the event happen.
To the students who attended it was a fantastic effort by you. Your behaviour, participation and attitude towards the day
was brilliant and it looked like you had a great day. The only disappointment on the day was the absence of those students
who nominated to run, but on the day chose not to attend the event. Many hours were spent organising food, transport and
re-organising and covering classes to cater for your participation. You missed a great community event.
A BIG THANK YOU MUST GO TO BEASLEY MEATS! They donated our delicious sausages for our bbq, which we greatly
appreciated. Thank-you for your support and generosity.
Congratulations again Gandhi on your result and outstanding performance as a Community.

YEAR 7 BASKETBALL REPORT
The Year 7 boys and Year 7 girls participated in the Upper Hume Basketball Tournament in Wangaratta last Monday
with great success. The Year 7 girls finished on equal points in first place with Marian College Myrtleford. Our girls
needed to win their last match by 100 points, however they fell just short and ended up in second place with a slight
lower percentage.
Our Year 7 boys cruised through most of the pool matches with convincing wins, however, we were expecting a very
competitive final against Galen College who looked a strong team in their pool matches. The boys were warned that
they would need to play well as a team to win. Our boys responded strongly and outplayed, out ran and were far too
strong for Galen winning the Final 55 to 5, with Hudson Garoni (MacKillop) dominating the board and Mitch Donovan
(da Vinci), Jarred Ardern (MacKillop), Hayden Clarke (Gandhi) and Baylee Jerram (MacKillop) controlling the tempo
of the game.
Our boys will now progress to the Hume Region Finals next Term.

ALUMNI UPDATE
I am very excited to be able to pass on the reunion dates and details for 2013 as follows:
The 20 and 25-year reunions are scheduled for October and the 10-year reunion is in November. Although only one
reunion will be held on the school grounds, all groups are booked in for school tours.
It is hard to imagine that in 1980, when Catholic College was only a year old, there were 13 students enrolled in HSC
(now VCE) with 11 of those students graduating. In fact it wasn’t until the late 1990s that graduating numbers at
Catholic College moved towards 100. It will be interesting to see how many of the 48 graduates from 1988, or the 57
from 1993 or the 143 of the class of 2003 will be in attendance at the reunions.
Here at Catholic College we value our past students and their continued contribution to College life. This year alone
we have had ten alumni come in to speak to current students about their post-school experiences.
Past students spend many hours planning to make their reunion events successful and your support is greatly
appreciated. If you know of someone that attended in the years listed below, please pass this information on as they
may not be aware that our Alumni is alive and well. With the evolution of technology, keeping in touch is much easier
than ever before. Facebook and Gmail are very handy tools if you are considering organising a reunion.

COLLEGE FEES
A reminder to families wishing to make cash, cheque or Eftpos payments over the term break, that the office is
open. The finance team is also on hand to discuss any aspect of your account. We can be contacted by phone 02
6043 5500, or email finance@ccw.vic.edu.au, or by calling in any time between 9.00am to 4.00pm (appointments
prior to 9.00am and after 4.00pm can be arranged by phone).
We will be doing a Statement run to the end of Term 3 and sending Statements out over the break. Please check
your Statement carefully and contact us immediately if you have any queries.
For those families who have elected to pay by Term, a reminder that the final Term payment is due on Tuesday, 15
October (Week 2 of Term 4). If you have elected a deduction by Direct Debit or Credit Card, please ensure sufficient
funds will be available for this date and if not, please contact us to make alternate arrangements. Term payers who
pay by EFT, cash, cheque or Eftpos, please pay on or before Tuesday, 15 October or contact us to make alternate
arrangements if required.
Once again, we thank families who are current with their school fees and to those who have arrangements in place
for settlement of their accounts.

ICT SERVICES CENTRE
Information about ICT can be found within the 'Learning with ICT' section of the College website:

8.00am - 4.30pm during Monday to Thursday and 8.00am - 4.00pm on Fridays for Free ICT Support. Students and

To assist the College in keeping accurate records, it is preferred that student
absences are phoned through to the Absence Line prior to 9.00am on the day of the
absence. Please note that the Absence Line is open 24/7 for ALL matters relating to
student absences.

a family member or other significant person in your child/ren's life when convenient

speaker is Shane Piper, ICT Director at Catholic College who will be on hand to answer any questions you have
about social media, the use of it at home and how to manage it's use (or excessive use). Tea and coffee and few
