Some of you may recall the Bill Cosby
comedy routine from the 1970’s, in which
he gives his impression of a conversation
between Noah and God.
“NOAH”
booms Cosby’s impression of God.
“RIIGGHHTT - WHAT DO YOU WANT
– I’VE BEEN GOOD” responds Noah. “I
WANT YOU TO BUILD ME AN ARK” demands the booming
voice. “RIIGGHHTT – WHAT’S AN ARK?” asks Noah.
Friday 6:15pm
Saturday 9:30am
And so the conversation goes on between God and Noah,
until at last Noah agrees to build the ark and save humanity.
What makes the story so funny is the way Cosby imagines a
discussion with God in such a human way, complete with God
even momentarily forgetting the size of a cubit. Despite the
fact that the dialogue is between a man and the supreme being,
there is nothing particularly spiritual about the conversation.
At times it even feels like God has to get a little heavy handed
in order to get what he wants.

Tuesdays
I was reflecting on that funny exchange from long ago when
Rabbi Larry Hoffman came to Temple Israel last month to talk
to us about synagogue renewal. In his discussions he made
the point that Jews don’t have the same way of discussing
spirituality as many people of other faiths. Many non-Jews
speak openly of their personal relationship with God. When
Rabbi Hoffman asked a group of people gathered at my house
whether they ever had direct dialogue with God, none reported
that they had. Then he asked whether anyone present had
ever had a profound experience in their life that they could
not easily explain without considering the possibility of a
divine presence? Many in the room answered that they had,
and several shared their experiences. While the stories varied
widely, all of them had clearly had a profound impact on the
person relating the story, and had given purpose and meaning
to their life in a unique and unexpected way. What ensued was a
discussion of spirituality from a Jewish perspective. By the end
of the evening everyone in the room felt like they had shared
something important with their fellow Temple Israel members,
and had a positive and spiritual experience in the process.
Rabbi Hoffman’s visit was filled with discussions of how to
make our temple more vital, relevant and spiritual in the lives of
our members. He referred to Judaism as a 2,000 year running
conversation and urged us all to engage in that conversation
as a means of transforming our synagogue to meet the needs
of the next generation. Rabbi Hoffman taught us that while
we don’t always openly discuss spirituality, all of us are seeking
meaning and purpose in our lives, and that spiritual experiences
and discussions are a way that we can achieve these goals. I
learned that creating an environment where spirituality can be
nurtured is one of the keys to helping our synagogue thrive and
grow in the future. It is critical that we help people understand
their own profound experiences, and build a community based
on the types of relationships that can come from sharing them
with others.
Jewish spirituality turns out to be very different than Bill
Cosby’s depiction of God and Noah saving the world.
Following Rabbi Hoffman’s vision, we don’t need to hear from
God directly in order to have a spiritual experience. I sincerely
want Temple Israel to be a place where we can find meaning
and relevance in our lives, and that membership at Temple
Israel means something very important to all of us because of
those experiences.

is pleased to present children’s programming. The venues
will also include three screenings in the Lake Norman area.
As in past years, there is an All-Festival Pass that provides
access to all ticketed films (including those in Lake Norman)
for $85, a savings of $30. Tickets can be purchased at

Center during their normal business hours to have someone

Youth Happenings
at Temple Israel
Temple Israel Religious School
Mazel Tov to our B’nai Mitzvah
By Rabbi Tracy G. Klirs, Education Director
Purim Celebrations - On Sunday, Feb. 24th,
TIRS students enjoyed fun, hands-on Purim
activities in the classrooms. The Zayin (7th
grade) families ran a “Mishloach Manot assembly
line” for the younger grades, and then delivered
the completed baskets to over 60 Jewish seniors.
Sisterhood provided all the supplies, and Jewish Family Services
and the JCC provided the names and addresses of the seniors.
Ethan Schimelman
After the festivities in the school, families joined their children
at the Temple for a Purim Shpiel conceived by the GimmelVav classes. Each class dramatized one or two chapters of the
Megillah with wacky themes - Greasers, Teletubbies, M&M’s,
Sports, Texting, etc. Temple Israel provided hamantaschen for
all.

Shabbat Attendance Recognition The TIRS Advisory
Committee launched a new program to encourage better
student attendance on Shabbat. We’ve established 3 recognition
levels – 6-11 services is the B’reisheet (beginning) level, 12-17
services is the Shabbat level, and 18 or more services is the Chai
level. A board listing the names of students in each level is on
display outside the chapel on Shabbat. In addition, the Shabbat
attendance for all TIRS students is posted in the TIRS building.
As of the beginning of February, over 70 students had made it to
the B’reisheet level, and over a dozen made it to the Shabbat level.
Anyone who reaches the Chai level (18 is the required minimum
number of services 3rd-7th graders are required to attend) will
be honored on the bimah on a Shabbat morning, and presented
with a specially-designed “Chai” lapel pin by Rabbi Ezring.

Cantor’s Column
Sisterhood News
Why We Love Our Choir By: Cantor Elias Roochvarg
On the Festivals, while the congregation sings the melodies of the
Hallel and Torah service, the Choir sings lovely harmonies. And on
the High Holidays, the Choir adds great choral masterpieces, adding
another inspiring dimension of expression to our services. Many
people come forward each year after High Holidays to say how much
the Choir’s participation enhanced their prayer experience.
In order to do its job, the Choir needs at least 2 or 3 people on each
voice part (i.e., sopranos, altos, tenors and basses) for the best blend. We
are now in dire need of sopranos and serious need of tenors and basses.
Choir Notes 
Though reading music is a desirable skill, it is not required.
As with reading music, the ability to read Hebrew is not required.
The Choir sings one day of each of the 3 major Festivals, plus Yom
Kippur, & the 1st day of Rosh Hashanah, or a total of 5 days throughout the year, plus Thursday night rehearsals.
So if you like to sing, and are willing to make the modest time
commitment, and especially if you’re a soprano, please contact the
Cantor or Monty Bennett at 704-362-2796.
Sonny Addison
You will always be remembered for the things

We Plan, God Laughs: What to Do when
Life Hits You Over the Head
By Sherre Hirsch
“The old Yiddish proverb, ‘We plan, God
Laughs,’ expresses a truth everyone can
relate to. At every stage of life we make plans,
setting out where we want to go and imagining
what we will be like when we have ‘arrived.’
But things have a way of turning out not quite
as we hoped or expected. In We Plan, God
Laughs….Sherre Hirsch argues that too often
our plans are limited to ones we think up at
bedtime, or are devised by our parents, or by
what looks good on a resume. Addressing
serious spiritual issues, Hirsch takes readers
through ten basic steps for formulating a plan
that reflects who we are now and who we want
to be – a plan that is alive, organic, and in
sync with God.”
This intriguing description of Sherre Hirsch’s
book is sure to motivate us to read the book,
attend the Women’s Division Spring Lecture
on March 14, where she will be the featured
speaker, and then participate in the March 21
Temple Israel book club discussion.
We Plan, God Laughs ….. offers 10 steps to
self-improvement and spiritual health. Drawing
on such familiar figures from the Bible as Jacob
and Esau, Hirsch (a Rabbi), she demonstrates
how to forget past hurts and fears in order to
become present in the here and now. The noted
Rabbi Harold Kushner says it is “an uplifting
book. Where there is despair, Rabbi Hirsch
offers hope, and where there is confusion, she
shows us the path to clarity.”
