Such is the true path of Kendo”. Also through the practice of Kendo, mental readiness is established. “Kendo training is to be taken very seriously and done properly. Mind and body are cultivated through vigorous training. This will in turn bring vitality to the mind and spirit. The uniqueness of Kendo teaches us respect, discipline and faith. In order to accomplish this, we must always give our all until our powers are exhausted. In an even broader sense, one must learn through the practice of Kendo to love our country, but also to promote peace and harmony on earth”. Through the dedication and hard work of 8th-dan Kendo Master Yoshiteru Tagawa and his staff this tournament continues to grow in number and skill. I truly appreciate his efforts, commitment and enthusiasm for kendo and his students. I also wish to extend a special welcome and my sincere appreciation to 8th-dan Takashi Futagoishi, who has traveled from Japan for this event. We are honored to have such a master of this art join us and have the opportunity to demonstrate to him the high skills and abilities of kendoists here in America. Those unfamiliar with the art of kendo may believe it was solely the practice of using a sword as an effective weapon in preparation for battle. But since the 17th century in Japan, the strong influences of Confucianism, Shintōism and Zen Buddhism incorporated important spiritual and moral elements into the swordsmanship training. Selfconfidence, courtesy and respect for others were of utmost importance for all samurai. Still today, kendo is as much character development, as it is fencing skills. Although it is physically and mentally demanding, kendo remains popular for men and women of all ages in Japan, the US and the world over. Carrying on the tradition handed down from the swordsmanship culture is not easy, but continual practice can empower kendoka (kendo practitioners) with the willpower to overcome adversity. 14TH ANNUAL DE TROIT OPEN KENDO TOURNAMENT Welcome! 14th Annual Detroit Open Kendo Tournament, President All United States Kendo Federation, Vice President Detroit Kendo Dojo, President Dear Kenshi, I am pleased to welcome you to the 2012, 14th Annual Detroit Open Kendo Tournament. 250 participants have traveled from all over the United States and Canada to compete in today’s competition. This year, we are honored to receive two very special guests. I introduce to you, Mr. Kuninori Matsuda, Consul General of Japan in Detroit. I am also pleased to introduce Takashi Futagoishi Sensei, Kendo Hanshi 8 Dan, from Hyogo, Japan. Futagoishi Sensei is the 2006 All Japan 8 Dan Tournament Champion; Former Hyogo Police Office Kendo Chief Master; Professor at the Sonoda Women’s University; All Japan Kendo Federation Board of Director and Kobe City Kendo Federation Vice President. This tournament is a time of fierce competition, but also a time of friendship and goodwill. Please keep in mind that each match should represent the true kendo sprit and good sportsmanship. I would like to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to the tournament committee members and the many people that make this event a success. A special thank you also goes to the parents of Detroit Kendo Dojo and its volunteers without whom this tournament would not be possible. I wish you all a successful and most enjoyable tournament. Sincerely, Yoshiteru Tagawa Kendo Kyoshi 8th Dan It is my hope that each of today’s participants will be energized by the event and benefit greatly from the competition. I offer my sincere congratulations to each of you for your accomplishments thus far and wish you the greatest success! 2 3 14TH ANNUAL DE TROIT OPEN KENDO TOURNAMENT 14TH ANNUAL DE TROIT OPEN KENDO TOURNAMENT Tournament Schedule Sunday February 19th, 2012 Special Guest Instructors Kendo Hanshi 8th Dan 8:00 Opening Ceremony Opening Remarks National Anthems Welcoming Address Guest Speeches Introduction of Guests Sportsmanship Pledge Rules of Matches Christopher Thompson Yoshiteru Tagawa Kuninori Matsuda Hidemitsu Mizusawa John Campbell Takeshi Inoshita Japan Kendo Kata Uchidachi Takashi Futagoishi Shidachi Yoshiteru Tagawa 9:00 Start of Tournament: Mudansha Jr. Youth Mudansha Sr. Youth Mudansha Adult Women’s Shodan/2 Dan/3 Dan matches Youth Team Tournament 11:30 Mohan-Keiko Takashi Futagoishi Yoshiteru Tagawa Koro Fujisaki Akemi Fujisaki Tournament President Consul General of Japan Detroit Kendo-Dojo Head Judge Kendo Hanshi 8 Dan Kendo Kyoshi 8 Dan Closing Ceremony Awards Presentation Closing Remarks Tournament Closing Yoshiteru Tagawa Takashi Futagoishi Hidemitsu Mizusawa Takashi Futagoishi Sensei History of Tournament Participation All Japan Kendo Championship (7 times) All Japan Police Kendo Championship (12 times) All Japan Kendo East vs. West Tournament (7 times) Japan Prefectures Tournament (3 times) Japan National Athletic Meet Kendo Tournament (5 times) All Japan 8 Dan Kendo Championship Champion in 2006 ( 11 years and Under ) ( 12 - 15 years ) ( 16 years and Up ) ( Shodan and Up ) 12:00 Lunch 1:00 Tournament resumes 4 Dan and Up Team Tournament 5:00 Born Apr. 4, 1951 in Kumamoto, Japan (Age 60) Education: Otsu (Kumamoto) High School Occupation: Former Hyogo Police Head Office Kendo Chief Master Professor at the Sonoda Women’s University All Japan Kendo Federation Board of Directors Kobe City Kendo Federation Vice President Tournament Staff Advisor Kuninori Matsuda Consul General of Japan in Detroit Tournament President Yoshiteru Tagawa Chief Judge Takeshi Inoshita Court Judges Shuji Matsushita Takashi Otsuka Shigemitsu Kamata Tetsuo Komizu Norman Otani Yuutaro Matsuura Judge 4-Dan Above Chairman of Tournament Committee Takaaki Sato 4 Tournament Coordinators Akira Inoue Noriyuki Sakuma Takuya Manome Hidemitsu Mizusawa Management Coordinators Tetsuo Ogata Tim Minowa Tomoko Aki Christopher Thompson Hidemi Saito Terumune Tagawa 5 14TH ANNUAL DE TROIT OPEN KENDO TOURNAMENT 14TH ANNUAL DE TROIT OPEN KENDO TOURNAMENT Tournament Participants Tournament Participants Austin Kendo Doshikai Jeff Chen 4Dan Peter Houston 4Dan Francois Wolf 3Dan Baltimore-Annapolis Kendo Chris Phelps 3Dan Ken Wakabayashi 2Dan Battle Creek Kendo Kai Stephen Chaffin 3Dan Daniel M Hammond M Bob Mack 4Dan Yutaro Matsuura 6Dan Boston Shufukai Joshua Ketterman 3Dan Capital Area Budoukai - No. Virginia Jeremy Ross M Chicago Kendo Dojo Seung Ik Choi M John Condon 4Dan Maciej Makowski M Poh-Keong Ng M Brian Ozaki M George Pace M Priscilla Resendiz M Choyokan Alex Hayashi 2Dan Tomohiko Hayashi 5Dan Peggy Ho 2Dan Leo Kim 2Dan Robert Lee 1Dan Dorothee Liebschner 1Dan Jung Hyun Min 3Dan Rich Moy 1Dan Shigeto Nagayama 4Dan Kenichi Okada 4Dan Takashi Otsuka 6Dan Central Kentucky Kendo Club Shohei Iwase 1Dan Hiroaki Okazaki 3Dan Kazutora Sellers 1Dan Ryukichi Sellers M Shunta Sellers M Yusei Suzuki M 6 Cleveland Kendo Club Shion Iwaizumi Yuto Iwaizumi Detroit Kendo Dojo Asuka Aki Kennosuke Aki Tomoko Aki John Campbell Michael Delphia Ayumi Fujisaki Hugo Fung Rikuo Hasegawa Akira Inoue Aoi Kameyama Tim Minowa Mikuni Mishina Hidemitsu Mizusawa Erick Motta Mei Niwa Reo Ogata Tetsuo Ogata Ruairidh Pooler William Randazzo Daichi Sakuma Noriyuki Sakuma Yuri Sakurai Takaaki Sato Collin Sherrod Minako Sherrod Terumune Tagawa Chris Thompson Jun Yoshida Kei Yoshida Riku Yoshida Takeru Yoshida Eastern Michigan Kendo Club Eric Abbey Charlie Kondek Zakiah Phillips Stijn Van Osch M M M M 3Dan M M 2Dan M M 5Dan M 2Dan 3Dan 4Dan 2Dan 1Dan 1Dan 2Dan 3Dan M M 4Dan M 5Dan M 1Dan 2Dan 3Dan M M M 1Dan 4Dan 4Dan M 2Dan Etobicoke Shigemitsu Kamata Man-San Ma Yoshimi Matsuzaki Steven Park Ayaka Sugiyama Ryan Symaka Ryo Yasumura Kang-Yeol You Forrest City Kendo Club Thopik Adianto Nick Bouvier Ron Herbin Issac Kim Jon Leadley Wei Hao Tang Grand Rapids Kendo Kai Tarra DeBesten David Noonan Vlad Trusevich Hokkyokusei Kendo Club Reo Iijima JCCC Eillot Alitila Filip Ivanoski Raymond Kim Aki Shikatani Ryo Tamaru Sean Zanpata Jung Ko Kendo Club Bree Yang Ken-Zen Dojo Maryann Amici Mark Bieri Madison Kendo Dojo Paul Bendr Sophia Brichford Hayden Jacobs Alan Jurgens Brian Kocken Chishung Yip Miami Valley Kendo Club Joseph A. You must maintain good health and vitality in every part of your body. 2) Develop a strong spirit. Your skill and spirit must be in perfect harmony. This will enable you to adapt and to cope with even the harshest of environments. 3) Training is critical. Your mind, spirit, hands and feet are to combine to work as one. Practice diligently to attain this. 4) Experiment and use your mind. Doing this will bring you closer to enlightenment as well as improve your skill and techniques. 5) Fundamental Training. Practicing basic techniques must be done properly. Posture, stance, grip, line of sight, footwork, attacking are critical. If you do not take these seriously, your skills will not evolve. 6) Always train with a focused spirit. Your spirit controls your body. Whether it is during practice or tournaments, always maintain a focused spirit and put forth your best effort. 7) Train with passion from beginning to end. You will encounter many hardships and suffering. 8) Do not become conceited or overconfident. Whether it is in your Kendo, your education, or even in your career, arrogance is the root of all failure. This kind of attitude is the greatest detriment to your training. 9) Maintain purity in your soul. Anger, deception, selfishness are enemies to your training. The path of Kendo is to train seriously in order to build character. 10) Live the way you train. Do not separate what you learned in Kendo from your everyday life. It is unfortunate if this happens. By keeping the path of Kendo and the path of life as one, you will benefit greatly. 8 International Kendo Federation – The Regulation of Kendo Shiai and Shinpan INDIVIDUAL Match Mudan Jr. & Sr. Youth & Mudan Adult; 3 minutes, 3 points match, Unlimited Extension Women, 1, 2, 3 & 4 Dan Up; 3 minutes, 3 points match, Unlimited Extension 4 Dan & Up Semifinal and Final; 5 minutes TEAM Match Youth; 2 minutes, 3 points match, No Extension Adult; 3 minutes, 3 points match, No Extension If same score & same points, Representative Match.
