Kosciusko County Convention and Visitors Bureau 111 Capital Drive, Warsaw, IN 46582 574-269-6090 • 800-800-6090 www.koscvb.org favoritemoments moments from our past In the following pages, some of our residents and visitors share their favorite moments in Kosciusko County. You may choose to retrace their steps, or you may prefer using the listings and ads in this guide to create your own perfect moments. Tell us about your visit, send us your photos, and your moments may be included in next year’s guide! by Dan Coplen A long-time lover of fine music, Tom Julien invites you to attend one of the free MasterWorks concerts. His recommendation is on page 5. Jerry and Denise Auer, along with their sons, Benford and Matthew, always enjoy going out on an occasional antique day. They love to find treasures to fit in their 1880’s Queen Anne home in Warsaw. Their antique adventure starts on page 9. David Phelps, a foodie who enjoys everything from local to exotic cuisine, gives us a gastronomic bike tour starting at the BAK-AFE and a ride around Winona Lake. Find out more about his restaurant suggestions on page 15. Judy Daniels takes a look at some area attractions that her grandchildren enjoy when they visit. Discover where the kids like to go when they’re in town, on page 21. On page 23, outdoor writer and avid fisherman John Davis describes where to catch a variety of fish in select lakes of Kosciusko County. Rob Hueni and his family love to escape Indianapolis in order to spend part of the summer on Lake Tippecanoe. On page 24, he tells us about some of the fun activities you can experience on the county’s many lakes. Living in Kosciusko County for the first 32 years of his life, Dave Pacheco shares the links and restaurants to hit for a great day of golf, on page 25. (left page, from left to right) Webster Lake Ski Bees, Fall Foliage, Downtown Warsaw 2 | www.koscvb.org County Historian Dan Coplen picks out some spots where you can get up-close and personal with the county’s past. Kosciusko County was created in 1836, a few years after Indian tribes ceded their land to the U.S. government. Today, little remains of these native peoples except for arrowheads and names on maps, such as Tippecanoe,Wawasee, Papakeechie and Wabee lakes. Arrowheads, axes and other Indian artifacts can be viewed at the Old Jail Museum, along with other displays about the history of the county. The county was named for Thaddeus Kosciuszko, a native of Poland who played a critical role in the Revolutionary War. And since Warsaw was the capital of Poland, that was the name given to the county seat. But the county’s first town was Leesburg, where the first school was built. Leesburg still has several beautiful old homes and brick streets that recall its earlier days. Oswego is another early village. It is the home of the Pound Store, which opened in 1843 and is the county’s oldest commercial building. The Pound Store, which was a general store and post office, is open on Sunday afternoons during the summer. Farming and lumber were two of the county’s first industries. The county is well known for its chickens and eggs; Mentone has a statue of a large egg on its main street that pays homage to that industry. Black walnut, oak and other beautiful hardwoods grew in abundance here. A quick trip into any part of the county will take you past beautiful farms and woods; East Main Street in Warsaw is one of the most beautiful streets in the county with its leafy trees overlapping overhead. Kosciusko County has about 100 lakes. In the county’s early days, ice was harvested from nearly every lake and used to refrigerate food and drinks. Many towns have festivals celebrating the lakes, such as the Mermaid Festival in North Webster. During Prohibition, gangsters stayed at lakeside hotels and cottages, such as the Barbee Hotel on the Barbee chain of lakes. Most lakes also had dance halls, and the big bands of the 1930s and 1940s played there. Winona Lake had long been a resort town, too. It became part of the Chautauqua movement, then a center for summertime Bible conferences. The Boat House restaurant occupies a spot where a real boat house once stood, and offers a good view of the lake. Winona was also the home of famed evangelist Billy Sunday, a former professional baseball player. Sunday’s home and the Reneker Museum tell the history of Winona. The Village at Winona, with its many interesting shops, is a good place to start a tour of old Winona. The town has plaques at various points that detail the town’s history, and has a vintage baseball team that plays in the style of the 1890s. Trains linked the county to big cities in the east and west. Pierceton’s old train station has been turned into an interesting restaurant. A few miles west of Warsaw is the Chinworth Bridge, an iron framed span that was built in 1897. Now part of a walking and bicycle trail, the bridge is a monument to the days of the horse and buggy. The county also had an interurban line, whose cars looked like the San Francisco cable cars and ran on overhead electric wires. Kosciusko County Visitors Guide | 3 arts and entertainment I am impressed with the many opportunities to enjoy the arts here. Especially the MasterWorks festival, and the summertime concerts in Warsaw’s Central Park. They are free to everyone, so people of all ages and socio-economic levels can attend. favorite moments Princene Moore by Tom Julien Performing Arts Artists and Artisans Every year, thousands of visitors come to Kosciusko County for the variety of performing arts activities offered. A diverse variety of artists and artisans call Kosciusko County home. Painters, photographers, and jewelers craft and sell their work in county shops. Woodworkers and furniture makers shape fine pieces for your kitchen and home. Farm-grown products, such as soybeans and alpaca wool, become unique gifts as scented candles and knitwear. Glass is cut in the same manner and on the same machinery as it has been in Warsaw since 1911. In 2010, the Northern Indiana Tourism Development Commission unveiled an Art & Earth Trail through seven northern Indiana counties, including Kosciusko County. The trail, celebrating the cultural diversity of Northern Indiana, allows visitors to personally experience the artistic and agricultural heritage of the region. One-of-a-kind lodging and dining facilities complete the trail, giving visitors the opportunity to maintain the authentic experience throughout their trail visit. The Art & Earth Trail is a wonderful addition to the region and to Kosciusko County. For complete details about the Art & Earth Trail, visit ArtandEarthTrail.com. Visit one of the many artist and artisan shops in Kosciusko County and you will not only be able to purchase the unique and beautiful pieces made here, often times you will be able to watch the artist or artisan at work, crafting something before your very eyes. Students from around the world come to study with professional musicians and performers during the MasterWorks Festival (see sidebar at right). Acts such as Little River Band, Sawyer Brown, Roy Clark, Bo Bice and more have all recently performed here. We are home to a professional symphony orchestra, a rarity for a community this size, and a world-class theater where talented performers bring to life classic and new musical favorites. And many performances are free! For the details on the performing arts activities in Kosciusko County, visit www.koscvb.org/performingarts. Museums Kosciusko County is home to six museums dedicated to local history, and one completely unique museum dedicated to Hallmark Ornaments. Visit the home of Billy Sunday, the baseball evangelist who spent his last years in Winona Lake, or learn about the Potawatomi Indians who lived in northern parts of the county in the mid 1800s. See a helicopter engineered by native son Lawrence D. Bell. Explore the old jail and sheriff’s home or learn about Homer Rodeheaver, the world’s most beloved gospel singer. Or see every single Hallmark Ornament ever made! To get information on each of Kosciusko County’s interesting museums, visit www.koscvb.org/museums. 4 | www.koscvb.org A long-time lover of fine music, Tom invites you to attend one of the MasterWorks concerts. When people think of top-quality symphony orchestras, they usually identify them with major cities, such as New York, Philadelphia or Cleveland. However, if you come to Kosciusko County this summer, you will be able to hear not one but two superb symphony orchestras playing each weekend from mid June to mid July. And to top it off, all concerts are free. These concerts are a part of the annual MasterWorks Festival. Each year some 250 advanced students of music, dance and theater gather on the Grace College campus to study and perform. They are joined by approximately 90 highly-skilled faculty members recruited from well-known schools of music, orchestras and dance and drama troupes. Do not miss the rare privilege of attending MasterWorks performances this summer. For a concert schedule, visit www.koscvb.org/performingarts. They love to find treasures to fit in their 1880’s Queen Anne home in Warsaw. I would have to say, it is always a thrill to go antique shopping in Kosciusko County with my family. We normally start the morning eating breakfast at Maria’s House of Pancakes in Warsaw off US Hwy 30 East. After a good cup of coffee and more food than we can eat…our antique adventure begins. We always enjoy the scenic drive to North Webster. There are two antique shops on Main Street where we always stop. The first is Third Generation Antiques. It is a smaller shop that offers a friendly atmosphere and some very unique items. Items include a vintage boat, antique furniture, and a variety of collectables. The second shop is the Heart of the Lakes Antique Mall. They have many consignors with antiques ranging from primitive to East Lake and Nautical to midcentury. Both shops are worth the trip. We have purchased finds from both… ranging from antique lamps to antique barometers. After leaving North Webster, we stop by Pierceton. Pierceton houses many antique shops ranging from fine art to elegant furniture. All shops are conveniently located on First Street. A person can easily park the car and walk to each shop. We enjoy the two story Pierceton Antique Mall. Whatever you collect, you will most likely find it there. The Blue Pearl houses some beautiful artwork and fine antiques. Sidow’s Antiques houses some extremely elegant furniture and glass. We always allow several hours to walk through all of the shops. Nearing a late lunch, we travel back to Warsaw and eat at Los Gordos Mexican restaurant. This is Warsaw’s best kept secret! The service is great and the food is authentic. After our fill, we drive to Leesburg and visit the newest antique mall in the area: Alley Cat’s Antique Mall. It houses a variety of styles of furniture, glassware, chandeliers, prints/paintings, and many type of other collectables. We have walked out with beautiful paintings as well as a mid-century sculpture. This mall is a must to see! After returning to Warsaw, we make our ritual stops to the used furniture shops and thrift shops. Bargains are often found at Home Sweet Home. They carry a variety of antiques as well as used modern furniture, collectables, knick knacks, and lighting. We normally walk out with something each time we visit! Other sleeper shops are Hidden Treasures (Old 30 West), Our Father’s House (Argonne Road), and the local Goodwill store (off US 30 East). We never count them out. We have traveled to many different shops, from the Midwest to the South, but always enjoy our local shops in Kosciusko County. If you want to enjoy a great time, fantastic finds, excellent food, and wonderful hospitality, then Kosciusko is the place to shop. You will not be disappointed. No one needed to know that I’d fallen before I reached the bike trails that day. Leaving the beaten path and admiring the beautiful wooded greenway, I’d caught my handlebar on a trail marker post and gone down with a bang. But it didn’t lessen my enthusiasm for a lovely Saturday spent in some of my favorite places. My first stop was at 1000 Park BAK-AFE in Winona Lake. I grabbed an outdoor table and enjoyed the quiet of a calm morning with a delicious pressure brewed coffee and blueberry scone. The atmosphere is perfect for a quiet conversation, reading, or staying connected with friends via the free wi-fi service. Just across the parking lot is the Trailhouse, where you can rent a bike. The folks there can direct you to some beautiful trails, whether your preference is pavement or dirt. Leaving the Bak-Café, I headed out for a biking adventure on the trails. On-road or off, there were miles to explore, and beautiful scenery everywhere I looked. This day I rode all the way around Winona Lake by heading through the paved Greenway Trail to South Town addition. These quiet roads connect with Country Club Road on the western edge of Winona Lake, and around to Smith Street in Warsaw. Cruising down Smith Street past the Kosciusko County Fairgrounds back to Winona Lake, I took a minute to pop in the farmers market, (open May to October). In addition to the fresh produce, I found flowers, locally raised meats, homemade jams, handcrafts and more. From Smith Street, I rode over to Winona Avenue. Since I’d worked up an appetite with all of this biking, I decided to stop at one of the tastiest haunts for Mexican food in the county, Los Gordos at 520 E Winona Avenue. They’re famous for their tacos! For less than $6.00 I had a tasty (and filling) lunch. After the ride, I hopped in the car to explore some of the many antique shops located in nearby Pierceton. Time seemed to slip past me quickly, and it was soon nearing dinnertime. I headed north on highway 13 to the Barbee Hotel for pizza at Danny’s Sports Bar and Pizzeria. It’s hard to decide between the thin crust or the deep dish – so I always order one of each! The sauce is slightly spicy, and the hand tossed is just chewy enough to hold up to all of the toppings. I capped off the evening back in Winona at the Cerulean Beer Garden. This pretty outdoor patio next to the Winona Canal has a small plate menu, and several unique (and hard to find) beer and wine selections. This is the perfect spot to unwind from a busy day of biking, shopping and eating in the county. You can even share a war story or two about your experiences on the trails. Over the past few years, my husband and I have seen our area from a different viewpoint. Why the change? Now we’re grandparents! One of the best “visit” times for our grandkids is around the Fourth of July. The children’s parade and Winona Park activities set the stage for a great day. The MasterWorks Fourth of July outdoor concert is always a highlight, too. Then we end the day watching fireworks on Winona’s island. The kids like to walk the Lake City Greenway into Winona. The two older girls are aware that Sweet Dreams is at the end of the trail, so we usually stop by. The ice cream probably cancels out the exercise, but as grandparents, we don’t worry about those things. The BoatHouse Restaurant is also a favorite place to go, where the kids always receive special attention. (The toys at Winona Merchantile are probably a big draw there, too.) The Winona Art Fair is a very interesting place for kids, and Pottery Bayou lets them be creative while having lots of fun. Sports Facilities Sports Goods CCAC Indiana’s Premier Sports Complex. (left page, from left to right) Winona Lake, Chinworth Bridge / Lake City Greenway, Golfing 22 | www.koscvb.org Outdoor writer and avid fisherman, John Davis describes where to catch a variety of fish in select lakes of Kosciusko County. It happens every spring. After months of sitting around the house reading fishing magazines, re-arranging the tackle box a dozen times, sharpening hooks and re-spooling the reels, Mr. Outdoors is more than ready to hit the water and tangle with whatever will strike his bait. “Hey, John, the ice is gone and it’s time to give Kosciusko County lakes some serious attention,” my Chicago friend Barry Bushrack barks over the phone each spring. That desire is a challenge because Kosciusko County has more than 100 lakes that range from five acres to Wawasee’s massive 3000. I like to start Barry’s day off at the Etna Green Café where he will not only get good food, but will be exposed to straight talk about the best fishing spots in the county. After a hearty breakfast, we normally look for a small, intimate lake setting for our first adventure. Good choices for this are Carr, Waubee, Banning and Wyland lakes. There are several small lakes in the Tri-County Fish and Wildlife Area north of North Webster that provide excellent bluegill and bass fishing, and their settings are flat-out beautiful. Since Barry loves to eat walleye, our next fishing challenge is experienced on Winona Lake where there is very fine walleye fishing. Last year he hauled in a beautiful sixpound walleye and was more than ready to return. “By the way, I understand that the ghost of Princess Winona roams the shores sometimes,” Barry noted. “Any chance I will see her?” “I doubt it, according to local tradition, she always appears after midnight and only when there is a thick fog on the water,” I noted. There are still a few walleye swimming around in Pike and Chapman Lakes from earlier stockings. Good bass lakes include Center, Wawasee, Silver, The Barbee chain and Tippecanoe Lakes. But if it’s giant northerns or muskies you want, Webster, The Barbee Chain, and Tippecanoe Lakes will provide memories that will last a lifetime. Fifty-inch monster muskies are not uncommon in Webster and Tippecanoe Lakes. Guide services are available for some of these lakes. Many anglers just like a quiet day fishing for pan fish, and just about every lake in the county will provide bluegill, redear, and crappie fishing. The lake of choice for huge redear and bluegills, however, is Big Chapman Lake. Barry’s cooler was filled with chunky redears from just two hours of fishing Chapman. Add to that his three bass, two walleyes and six perch, and our Chicago boy went home with a smile on his face. I’m expecting another phone call from Barry next week. After your fill of bacon, eggs and hash browns, head up Route 25 and you will run right into Rozella Ford Golf Club on the south side of Warsaw. Some nice elevation changes and an exceptional layout will make this a challenging morning round. By now, breakfast has worn off. On your way up to the northeast corner of the county, stop at one of the Penguin Point locations in Warsaw or in Syracuse. A famous tenderloin sandwich, some crinkle-cut fries and a root beer will hit the spot for lunch. If you are in the mood for a fullservice lunch, head to California Desert in Milford, just a quick jump west of Syracuse. There you will find an eclectic mix of cuisines, including the best calzones in the county. After lunch, go just north of Syracuse and you will come to Maxwelton Golf Club on County Line Road. At 6,490 yards, it is almost 200 yards longer than your morning round at Rozella Ford. Bob and Lorena Carlson will make you feel right at home before tackling some lengthy par-5 holes. By now, you are probably really tired. Recall all your good golf shots while relaxing at a great restaurant. For a nice dining experience with great service head south to Jimmy’s Restaurant and Lounge in North Webster. Perhaps you would rather have seafood after a great day on the links? You can’t go wrong with The Channel Marker in Syracuse. After this day, you will undoubtedly want to head out for more golf and good food in Kosciusko county. South Shore, Little Big Horn, Raccoon Run, Big Boulder, Indian Hills and Wawasee Golf all offer fun rounds. The .3 mile boardwalk provides the perfect vantage point from which the nature lover can enjoy the wonders of this diverse marsh habitat. This area has been set aside to preserve habitat resources for the plant and animal species living here. Hunting, fishing and collecting of any species is strictly prohibited in the boardwalk area. Acres Land Trust Nature Preserves Acres Land Trust, an organization dedicated to preserving natural areas in northeast Indiana, northwest Ohio, and southern Michigan, owns three nature preserves in Kosciusko County. • Bock Nature Preserve is home to uncommon blue ash trees, abundant trillium blooms, and a one-mile trail. • Glennwood Nature Preserve bursts with color each fall as the leaves in this bog turn brilliant shades of red and orange. • Wildwood Nature Preserve boasts nearly five miles of trails, as well as monthly nature events the whole family can enjoy. Whatever your skill level, you will find fun when you tee it up in Kosciusko County! For more information on these wildlife areas, visit www.koscvb.org/nature. (right page, from top to bottom) Beyer Farm Trail, Lake Wawasee, Lake Tippecanoe 24 | www.koscvb.org favorite moments Rob Hueni and his family love to escape Indianapolis in order to spend part of the summer on lake Tippecanoe. He tells us about some of their fun activities. Kosciusko County has so many lakes that it’s hard to know where to start. One of my fondest memories of lake Tippe (Tippecanoe Lake) was renting a fishing boat from Paytona Bay Marina, then taking it through the chain of lakes (entered through the east side of Tippe). It is unlike anything you have experienced. Take your time going through the vast channel system, and you won’t believe you’re in Indiana! For a few moments, you’ll think you’re drifting through the Florida everglades. To get to the lakes you need to navigate through the manually operated lock, and that’s another interesting experience. You can then spend the day on five connecting lakes. Find a quiet cove and drop your fishing line. Make some waves with all the other skiers. Or cruise along the shore line, admiring the beautiful lake mansions. Don’t miss the Tippecanoe Lake Country Club. When you’re ready for lunch or dinner, just dock your boat at one of the lake-shore restaurants, such as Pie-Eyed Petey’s on lake Tippe, or at The Frog, on the channels of lake Wawasee. Another fun way to experience the lakes is to pack a lunch, then head for the sand bars in lake Tippe or lake Wawasee. Both are family- and pet-friendly. Ski for awhile, head to the sand bar for lunch and relaxation, then ski some more. At dusk, cut the engine and enjoy an amazing sunset! If it’s evening entertainment you want, many of these lake restaurants have live music later in the night. The Tippy Dance Hall, which once hosted Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong and The Byrds, is located on the south-east shore of the lake. Today, it is a teen dance club with Saturday night dances. If you enjoyed exploring Tippecanoe Lake and its surrounding area, take the time to discover some other lakes in the county. The chart on page 29 will help narrow your choices. Joan Younce Agriculture is Kosciusko County’s number one industry. Drive down any country road and you’ll see the evidence. Keep your eyes open and you’re sure to discover that there’s more than corn in Indiana! Farms in Kosciusko County produce over 12,000 tons of tomatoes that become Red Gold Tomato products, soybeans that are processed at the world’s largest biodiesel fuel plant in Claypool, and millions of ducklings each year. Llamas, bison, long-horn cattle and alpacas are some of the exotic animals you can see on Kosciusko County farms, in addition to the more traditional livestock. What’s more, visitors can buy locally grown produce at local Farmers’ Markets and directly from the farm. Visit with farmers and local producers and buy locally.
