double clay brick
strong and safe
n Midland bricks are made to take the knocks of everyday
family life. They won’t twist, warp or dent. They are fire
and water resistant and unaffected by the extremes of the
Australian climate. They are impervious to termites, pests
and vermin. And their natural density makes for a quieter
home, dramatically reducing external sounds such as traffic
and noisy neighbours.
n For thousands of years no other building material has
endured like clay brick. With a lifecycle that lasts for
generations and colours that never fade, clay brick is the
most durable natural building material available today.
Not only does it maintain its appeal year after year, it is a
safe and solid investment for your family and your home’s
resale value.
n Brick homes are also a plus when it comes to insurance.
Check with your insurer and compare the rates for yourself.
In fact, one of the first questions your insurance company
will ask is “what material are the external walls made from?”
n Clay face brick is a finished product. There’s nothing
more to do but build. There’s no rendering, no painting
and no extra trades, which means a faster finish and less
maintenance to worry about in the future. Unlike some
alternative materials, face brick won’t rot, fade, peel or dent,
and is vermin proof. So you can regain your weekends
and avoid ongoing costs. This is an important factor when
looking at the “whole-of-life” cost of your home.
thermal insulation
n Clay brick homes even out temperature fluctuations better
than lighter weight materials because of their thermal mass.
And because clay brick is a natural and efficient insulator it
acts as a barrier to slow down heat transfer, improving yearround comfort while reducing your heating and
cooling costs.
n To see how you can benefit using solar passive design
with double clay brick go to www.midlandbrick.com.au
natural choice
n Brick is a natural choice for today’s sustainable design.
With no toxic emissions and its natural thermal
properties you’ll live in a healthier, safer and more
comfortable home.
n Being a natural product we can easily crush bricks back to
their original state and re-use them in the manufacture of
new products, lessening the impact on the environment.
n Midland Brick offers a recycling facility for you to dispose
of all your broken or unused bricks and pavers.
n Over its life, brick is extremely energy efficient. Once
your house is built, bricks don’t use any additional energy
or need further outlays to maintain their performance.
There are few other manufactured products that cost
so little and last so long.
18
long lasting &
low maintenance
designer style
n Designers and architects have the versatility to create
stylish, contemporary designs, striking internal features or
classic timeless recreations by using bricks.
n Whatever your choice there’s a colour, size and texture to
create the look you want. Match this with brick’s inherent
strength and durability and you will have a home that ages
beautifully for generations.

creative brickwork
mortar colours
Mortar comprises about 15% of a brick wall’s surface and can
dramatically change the overall appearance of your home simply
by choosing a different mortar colour or joint style.
Mortar colour can be used to complement or contrast with
the brick. Complementary tones give a more relaxed and
harmonious feel, while contrasting mortar can be used to create
a more formal, crisp and distinctive look.
Cream or off-white mortar is the most popular. It is used to
both highlight and contrast with red brick, or complement the
cool tones of cream bricks. For a maintenance-free rendered
look, oxides can be added to the mortar to match your bricks.
This creates a very contemporary monochromatic finish.
Before you build your new home, discuss your ideas with your
builder, or see it in Midland Vision, a computer imaging system
designed to let you see your new home before you build it.

mortar joint styles
The choice of mortar joint can be used to help create a casual,
rustic or formal look to your home. Rolled joints create a clean
contemporary finish and work well with nearly all brick and
house styles.
Flush Joint
Raked Joint
Choosing a flush joint will give a flatter appearance and lighten
the overall look of your brickwork. Whereas an inset, or square
raked joint, can have a more dramatic effect by adding dimension
and shadow to the look of your bricks.

mortar finishes
Creative mortar finishes are an easy way to accentuate or
impart a particular style on your home. Shown here using
Florentine Limestone, these finishes can be used on many
other bricks too.
We suggest you discuss your mortar choices with your builder,
as the finishes may differ with varying methods of mortar mix
and different application by bricklayers.

This finish provides a stylish, more uniform

coating a wall – from the old French word ‘parjeter’ meaning ‘to throw on top of ’.

colour & texture
With colours ranging from the lightest creams to subtle tans and
rich earthy reds, and the latest contemporary grey tones, you
can start to visualise the look of your home. Texture is also an
important consideration. Smooth bricks with straight edges will
create clean lines for a formal contemporary look, while textured
bricks with ‘rough’ edges create a more rustic appearance.
Then there’s the subtle stone imprint of our Provincial range
to give a look reminiscent of French Provincial or a clean ultramodern finish. For a more traditional look you can’t go past the
unique texture of our ‘Handmade’ range.
size
It wasn’t all that long ago that bricks were all the same size.
Not now. Today Midland Brick offer more sizes and shapes so
you can choose from the elegant 50mm Georgian to the 162mm
double height and of course the standard 76mm face brick.
English Garden Wall Bond
Double height bricks such as the Provincial and Manor Range
create a bolder majestic appearance and offer a fresh take on the
traditional look of stone and limestone blocks. While the Georgian
offers a more elongated style to help recreate the elegant and
intricate linear form of early brickwork.
Corbelling
Banding
Vertical Soldier
design style
Brick bond styles or patterns can dramatically change the
look of brickwork. The most commonly used is Stretcher or
Half Bond. Alternatively, for a contemporary look or feature,
bricks are laid directly above each other to form a Stack Bond.
Then there’s the Flemish Bond, a traditional pattern often seen
in our early colonial buildings where both the face and ends of
bricks are used.
50mm Georgian Granite Sett
76mm Standard Red Smooth
With composite material styles becoming more popular, bricks
can be used to great effect to create stunning feature panels
and entry statements. This is best achieved by using contrasting
textures and colours to the main brickwork. And think how
dramatic a feature wall or fireplace built from our Calais or
Avignon could look. The options are endless.
For an extra element of design, decorative effects such
as banding, corbelling or vertical soldier coursing can be
incorporated.
Midland Brick also offer a range of Special Shapes which will
add the finishing touches to your custom design.

With the trend to smaller block sizes, creating the

important information
Ordering Product. When ordering product, we recommend they are all
delivered at once to ensure colour consistency as colours will vary within
and between batches.
Product Inspection. We strongly recommend at all times there be careful
inspections and supervision of all bricks and pavers delivered to ensure
satisfactory results prior to and during installation. Any complaints regarding
product should be directed to the place of purchase prior to laying.
Sizing. Product supplied is within the dimensional tolerances specified
in Australia/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 4455. For further information
please contact Midland Brick Company. Sizes and number per square metre
are nominal only and subject to variance due to installation technique,
product colour and size variation through manufacturing processes. Please
consult your Midland Brick Sales Advisor if mixing various colours into
patterns.
Colour Blending. For the best colour results, blend your bricks and
pavers from various packs as you lay. Ask our sales advisors for more
information or download information bulletin brochure number 2 from
www.midlandbrick.com.au
Colour Variation. Whilst every effort is made to supply bricks and pavers
consistent with examples, variation will occur naturally within a production
run and with each production run of products.
Chipping and Breakage. Some minor chipping and breakage can occur during
the delivery, offloading and installation of products. It is recommended that
this product be used for cuts and infills. This should not exceed 5% of the
completed project.
Cutting. When cutting products, please ensure that the product is fully
wetted, to reduce the chance of discolouration from cutting slurry entering
the product surface. Similarly, ensure all slurry is washed from any cut
product before laying. Ensure that no cutting slurry falls on surface of
product already laid. For more information download information bulletin
brochure number 3 from www.midlandbrick.com.au
Cleaning. Ensure that no acid based products are used to clean surfaces of
masonry or Stylestone products. Please consult Midland Brick on 13 15 40
for further advice or or visit www.midlandbrick.com.au/claybrickcleaning
Bricks
Brick Laying Recommendations. For the best overall appearance please
ensure your bricklayer mixes bricks from several packs during laying. Laying
bricks from a single pack will not create a satisfactory blend of colour and
texture. NOTE: Only one face and end (header) is purpose made for colour
and texture on all standard and modular face bricks (excluding ‘Handmades’
where all faces can be used).
Brick Cleaning – High-Pressure Water Warning. The use of high pressure
water cleaning is NOT recommended as it may damage the face of
brickwork, window frames and erode mortar joints. To ensure your bricks
look great from the start visit www.midlandbrick.com.au/claybrickcleaning
Vanadium. On occasion yellow/green staining may appear on cream
coloured clay bricks or pavers. This is known as vanadium staining. This
staining is a natural by-product of clay products and is not harmful. Typically
the stain will appear if excessive acid is used in the cleaning process. The
stain will gradually weather away, however for quicker removal please visit
www.midlandbrick.com.au/claybrickcleaning
Damp Proof Course. It is imperative that adequate damp proof course is
installed to protect the brickwork from excessive ground salts and moisture.
Damp proofing in the external leaf of masonry, piers and in garden walls is
important to ensure that the bricks maintain their appearance. The damp
proof course must be installed correctly and above ground level to ensure
it functions correctly.
Efflorescence. Typically it is a white powdery deposit and almost always
harmless. Efflorescence appears due to external salt sources from
surrounding materials such as concrete, mortar or salty soils being drawn
up through the product by the drying effect. When the water evaporates
salts crystallise to form efflorescence. To remove efflorescence and other
forms of staining please visit www.midlandbrick.com.au/claybrickcleaning
Drag Marks. Drag or score marks may occur during the face texturing and
manufacturing process. The marks are evident on all similar textured or
mexicut type brick lines as vertical lines. During the manufacturing process
excessively deep and wide drag marks are removed, however minor drag
marks are not. These minor ‘drag marks’ are part of the product and do not
detract from the overall appearance of the completed wall when laid.
Brickwork by the Coast. To achieve maximum protection in coastal areas,
a sealed joint (flush or rolled) with an approved damp proof course is
recommended. To ensure the best possible performance of any brickwork
in severe marine environments, exposure grade units are required. Please
consult Midland Brick if more information is required.
Pavers
Paver Face. Some pavers have subtle variation in colour and texture where
either face can be used. The choice is yours.
Paving Dimensions/Pattern Design. Dimensions quoted are nominal only.
Actual manufactured size will vary between batch runs, product type and
colour of paver. Please consult your Midland Brick Sales Advisor, especially
when mixing various colours into patterns.
Paving Installation. In accordance with accepted engineering principles,
Midland Brick Company recommends allowing a 2-3mm joint between
pavers for clean jointing sand to be swept in between pavers to ensure
effective lock up and the use of a base layer under all segmental pavement
subjected to vehicular traffic. Please refer to Midland Brick technical
literature for specific recommendations or contact Midland Brick Technical
Support. For more information download information bulletin brochure
number 5 from www.midlandbrick.com.au
Crossovers and Driveways. In accordance with accepted engineering
principles Midland Brick Company recommends the use of a sub-base layer
under all clay segmental brick pavement subjected to vehicular traffic as
referred to in Midland Brick’s Crossover and Driveway document. When
paving crossovers you should first contact your local shire to ensure you
comply with their specifications. In some cases you may be entitled to a
rebate from your local shire.
Bedding Sand. Bedding material should be a well graded clean sand. A well
graded concreting or plasterer’s sand is considered suitable. Salt attack is
a potential problem with some clay and masonry paving and the capillary
break provided by the bedding sand is essential. Fatty sands, loams or
packing sands are not suitable.
Joint Filling Sand. Should be clean, sharp, well graded and finer than bedding
sand with no soluble salts and no excessive fine material. A washed dry
white sand is recommended.
Abrasive Objects. Minor edge chipping can occur when steel drum rollers,
mowers or edgers pass over paving bricks. When moving the above
machinery across pavers, insertion of a rubber strip or carpet between
paver and machine will alleviate this chipping.
Tyre Markings. Tyre markings may appear on any type of pavement
surface due to tyre compounds, vehicle weight, direction and the action
of power steering. For more information visit www.midlandbrick.com.au/

Swimming Pools. Where paving is to be used for pool edging, it is
recommended that you use our Bullnose pavers. Paving should be protected
with a suitable sealer to a minimum width of 2m from the pool edge. For a
suitable sealer please consult with a sealer manufacturer for expert advice.
Sealers should be renewed periodically as recommended by the sealer
manufacturer. When clay or masonry product is subjected to severe salt
attack situations, some deterioration may occur over time.
‘Handmade’ Pavers. To maintain the traditional character of handmade
pavers, they will vary in size and colour. We invite you to personally select
from our range of ‘Handmade’ pavers at the Middle Swan Sales Office, as
each firing creates a very individual look. Our Sales Advisors will be pleased
to help you select for your project.
