Nordic Mission 2015
Nordic Mission 2015 Executive Summary February 26-March 3, 2015 Osby, Sweden & Copenhagen, Denmark Rocky Mountain International 2232 Dell Range Blvd, Ste. 112 Cheyenne, Wyoming, 82009, USA Ph: (307) 637-4977 • Fax: (307) 634-8334 Email: SPratt@rmi-realamerica.com Web: www.rockymtnintl.com, www.rmi-realamerica.com Nordic Mission 2015 Executive Summary: February 26-March 3, 2015 Osby, Sweden & Copenhagen, Denmark Participants: Fred Walker, North Dakota Tourism Marlee Iverson, Montana Office of Tourism Vicky Engelhaupt, South Dakota Department of Tourism James Scoon, Wyoming Office of Tourism Jayne Buck, VISIT Denver Gary Schluter, Rocky Mountain Holiday Tours Susie Pratt and Mathias Jung, RMI-USA The average Nordic traveler receives five to six weeks of vacation each year, is the average age of 39 years old, and is looking for authentic experiences and destinations, so it is no wonder the Real America Region is a popular destination for the Nordic Region. When looking for inspiration on where their next holiday will be, the Nordic Region searches social media amongst their friends and family. The Nordics are one of the online leaders in the world with 90% of the population having Internet access, which provides huge potential to online travel companies for online bookings. This year it is expected that 62% of leisure travel will be booked online in the Nordic Region. It was clear throughout the mission that Scandinavians love to travel to the US, hence why the Nordic Region remains the fourth largest European market traveling to the US. Swanson’s America Travel Day – Osby, Sweden Now in it’s 13th year, Swanson’s America Travel Day attracted 1,635 visitors. This unique consumer show offers exhibition and presentation opportunities for US-based destinations to a targeted group of visitors who are intent on traveling to the US. America Day, held at Fort Swanson in Osby, Sweden, is one of Scandinavia’s largest meeting places for aspiring travelers, travel companies, and tourist authorities. A hosted dinner the night before America Day gave the Real America group a great opportunity to network with the Swanson’s staff, as well as the other US-based destinations, airlines, and ground transportation rental companies. In addition to the Real America booth where the group distributed materials, developed interest in the region, and visited with avid Swedish travelers, we gave a 45-minute presentation to a packed room of over 100 eager travelers. The response to the presentation was very positive and there were many in attendance that stated that they planned on visiting our region in the next year or were considering visiting after learning about all of the great things the region has to offer. Throughout the day, we met countless visitors who had plans to visit the region this summer. Many were looking for routing and overnight suggestions, recommendations on time of year to travel, and sights to see. We had discussions with those who were interested in everything ranging from motorcycling and traveling by RV and rental car, to national parks, Native American culture, and western history. We also enjoyed a great conversation with a young couple that attended Swanson’s America Travel Day in previous years and as a result booked a five-week holiday in our region. They truly enjoyed their holiday and are excited to visit again. Nordic Mission 2015 2 FDM US Travel Fair – Copenhagen, Denmark Held at the Docks in Copenhagen, FDM’s US Travel Fair hosted for a second year, was an overwhelming success with fourthousand people trudging out in rainy weather to learn more about US destinations. With show inspiration coming from Swanson’s America Travel Day, attendance more than doubled from its premier last year. The Real America group had a double booth where we distributed materials that proved to be very popular, as we ran out of materials in just over an hour and a half. A large percentage of visitors we talked to already had their holidays booked and were looking for routing ideas, accommodations, and other attractions to see and do along the way. The majority of travelers booked their holidays online and were looking for specific suggestions to help make the most of their time in the Real America Region. It was very clear at this show that consumers got a lot of their travel inspiration from brochures and then did more research online. The group also gave 3 presentations on the Real America Region and were received very enthusiastically by attendees. Several attendees plan to travel to our region in the future and others already had their travel plans arranged in our region and need specific suggestions before their trips began. Since we ran out of materials so early in the day, we collected names and addresses of consumers to send the Real America Guides to, as well as, additional information they may need to plan their next holiday to our region. Office Visit and Training at Nyhavn Rejser The Real America group visited the office of Nyhavn Rejser in the beautiful historic canal district of Copenhagen where a staff training was conducted with the US sales staff team and a product manager. Details of new attractions, accommodations, services and upscale accommodations were presented and discussed. Vacation guides and flash drives with state materials were also distributed for their use. Hosted Lunch at Axel Guldsmden The Real America Group hosted an informal luncheon with key tour operators, airlines, as well as, Discover America board members at the Axel Guldsmeden. This event provided a great opportunity for networking and relationship building. Over all we had ten attendees including representatives from two airlines and five tour operators. Everyone enjoyed the lunch, conversation, and informal updates from the operators and airlines. USA Travel Show – Copenhagen, Denmark Shortly after the luncheon the group attended the USA Travel Show hosted by Discover America Denmark at the Marriott Hotel in Copenhagen, where more than 300 Scandinavian tour operators, travel agents, and media participated and over 100 US-based exhibitors were in attendance. Throughout the afternoon and evening we met with both trade and media, many of whom we had recently seen at the Nordic Mission 2015 3 luncheon earlier that day. Many journalists that have been to the region before stopped by to visit and to see what was new. Hans and Karsten from Team Benns stopped by the booth to get an update on the region and to let us know they are interested in working with us more in the future. The group also had the pleasure to meet the United States Ambassador to Denmark, Rufus Gifford, where he talked about visiting the Ranch at Rock Creek in Montana last summer. The mission resulted in 20 leads and contacts, exposure to nearly 6,000 consumers at the two consumer shows attended, and numerous working relationships reinforced by meeting with and engaging with tour operators and airlines. Please see the enclosed for details. SCAN11: B2B Vagabond Travel Event SCAN15: Karin, Ulrick, and staff have made some changes to the Discover America Workshop format, but it still seemed a bit chaotic. Over 300 travel agents and journalists, attended the workshop making it the biggest-ever travel industry USA event in Scandinavia. SCAN12: Karin and her staff did an excellent job coordinating the Discover America Event in Copenhagen but we heard a lot of grumbling from the board members of the other Discover America committees in Scandinavia that she is trying to take over ALL Scandinavian events. At the recent Discover America Scandinavia quarterly meeting she proposed to the joint board that they increase the annual cost of membership to allow for each board member to collect an monthly stipend to cover the cost of the hours they spend on committee work. It was shot down quickly, but many are concerned that she is leading the groups to being profit centers rather than volunteer organizations committed to supporting the US. SCAN11: B2B Vagabond Travel Event -Charlotte Lindholm, Mikkel Nordberg, Sasha Richards, Victoria Cranmer, Nadia Bougouneau SCAN07: Met with Charlotte Lindholm. Charlotte is the newest member of Atlantic Link. She coordinated the two evening events for us in Copenhagen and did a great job. TUR05: Karen is really interested in working with ND (and the other RMI states). She is very strong in Denmark, but also has a lot of contacts in Sweden. We told her if she puts together another sales mission in 2006 0r 2007 she should send us info. TUR04: Karen is rep for several US states and Icelandair in Denmark. She would like to put together a proposal on what she can do for ND in Denmark and possibly Sweden. She will have something ready to present to us at Pow Wow next Month. She also wanted to tell us that she is working with Icelandair in putting together a 5 day training trip to Scandinavia in Sept. (Oslo, Stockholm, Helsinki and Copenhagen). She said that Pekka from Icelandair told her to get in touch with us and let us know that we are invited. The trip is going to cost about $4000 (would include air, hotels, meals and coordination of training workshops (that seems a bit high). She will send info on who has been invited to participate, who has confirmed and anything else that becomes available.
