The average Nordic traveler receives five to six weeks of vacation each year, is the average age of 39 years
old, and is looking for authentic experiences and destinations, so it is no wonder the Real America Region is a
popular destination for the Nordic Region. When looking for inspiration on where their next holiday will be, the
Nordic Region searches social media amongst their friends and family. The Nordics are one of the online leaders
in the world with 90% of the population having Internet access, which provides huge potential to online travel
companies for online bookings. This year it is expected that 62% of leisure travel will be booked online in the
Nordic Region. It was clear throughout the mission that Scandinavians love to travel to the US, hence why the
Nordic Region remains the fourth largest European market traveling to the US.
Swanson’s America Travel Day – Osby, Sweden
Now in it’s 13th year, Swanson’s America Travel Day attracted 1,635 visitors. This unique consumer show offers
exhibition and presentation opportunities for US-based destinations to a targeted group of visitors who are
intent on traveling to the US. America Day, held at Fort Swanson in Osby, Sweden, is one of Scandinavia’s largest
meeting places for aspiring travelers, travel companies, and tourist authorities.
A hosted dinner the night before America Day gave the Real America group a great opportunity to network
with the Swanson’s staff, as well as the other US-based destinations, airlines, and ground transportation rental
companies. In addition to the Real America booth where the group distributed materials, developed interest in
the region, and visited with avid Swedish travelers, we gave a 45-minute presentation to a packed room of over
100 eager travelers. The response to the presentation was very positive and there were many in attendance that
stated that they planned on visiting our region in the next year or were considering visiting after learning about
all of the great things the region has to offer.
Throughout the day, we met countless visitors who had plans
to visit the region this summer. Many were looking for routing
and overnight suggestions, recommendations on time of year
to travel, and sights to see. We had discussions with those
who were interested in everything ranging from motorcycling
and traveling by RV and rental car, to national parks, Native
American culture, and western history. We also enjoyed
a great conversation with a young couple that attended
Swanson’s America Travel Day in previous years and as a
result booked a five-week holiday in our region. They truly
enjoyed their holiday and are excited to visit again.
Nordic Mission 2015
2
FDM US Travel Fair – Copenhagen, Denmark
Held at the Docks in Copenhagen, FDM’s US Travel Fair hosted
for a second year, was an overwhelming success with fourthousand people trudging out in rainy weather to learn more
about US destinations. With show inspiration coming from
Swanson’s America Travel Day, attendance more than doubled
from its premier last year.
The Real America group had a double booth where we
distributed materials that proved to be very popular, as we
ran out of materials in just over an hour and a half. A large
percentage of visitors we talked to already had their holidays
booked and were looking for routing ideas, accommodations,
and other attractions to see and do along the way. The
majority of travelers booked their holidays online and were looking for specific
suggestions to help make the most of their time in the Real America Region. It was very
clear at this show that consumers got a lot of their travel inspiration from brochures and
then did more research online.
The group also gave 3 presentations on the Real America Region and were received very
enthusiastically by attendees. Several attendees plan to travel to our region in the
future and others already had their travel plans arranged in our region and need specific
suggestions before their trips began. Since we ran out of materials so early in the day, we
collected names and addresses of consumers to send the Real America Guides to, as well
as, additional information they may need to plan their next holiday to our region.
Office Visit and Training at Nyhavn Rejser
The Real America group visited the office of Nyhavn Rejser in the beautiful historic canal district of Copenhagen
where a staff training was conducted with the US sales staff team and a product manager. Details of new
attractions, accommodations, services and upscale accommodations were presented and discussed. Vacation
guides and flash drives with state materials were also distributed for their use.
Hosted Lunch at Axel Guldsmden
The Real America Group hosted an informal luncheon with key tour operators, airlines, as well as, Discover
America board members at the Axel Guldsmeden. This event provided a great opportunity for networking and
relationship building. Over all we had ten attendees including representatives from two airlines and five tour
operators. Everyone enjoyed the lunch, conversation, and informal updates from the operators and airlines.
USA Travel Show – Copenhagen, Denmark
Shortly after the luncheon the group attended the USA Travel
Show hosted by Discover America Denmark at the Marriott
Hotel in Copenhagen, where more than 300 Scandinavian tour
operators, travel agents, and media participated and over 100
US-based exhibitors were in attendance.
Throughout the afternoon and evening we met with both
trade and media, many of whom we had recently seen at the
Nordic Mission 2015
3
luncheon earlier that day. Many journalists that have been to the region before stopped by to visit and to see
what was new. Hans and Karsten from Team Benns stopped by the booth to get an update on the region and to
let us know they are interested in working with us more in the future. The group also had the pleasure to meet
the United States Ambassador to Denmark, Rufus Gifford, where he talked about visiting the Ranch at Rock Creek
in Montana last summer.
The mission resulted in 20 leads and contacts, exposure to nearly 6,000 consumers at the two consumer shows
attended, and numerous working relationships reinforced by meeting with and engaging with tour operators and
airlines. Please see the enclosed for details.
Respectfully submitted,

SCAN15: Attended hosted lunch and sponsored a portion of the
luncheon.
SCAN11: B2B Vagabond Travel Event
SCAN15: Karin, Ulrick, and staff have made some changes to the
Discover America Workshop format, but it still seemed a bit
chaotic. Over 300 travel agents and journalists, attended the
workshop making it the biggest-ever travel industry USA event in
Scandinavia.
SCAN12: Karin and her staff did an excellent job coordinating the
Discover America Event in Copenhagen but we heard a lot of
grumbling from the board members of the other Discover America
committees in Scandinavia that she is trying to take over ALL
Scandinavian events. At the recent Discover America
Scandinavia quarterly meeting she proposed to the joint board
that they increase the annual cost of membership to allow for
each board member to collect an monthly stipend to cover the
cost of the hours they spend on committee work. It was shot down
quickly, but many are concerned that she is leading the groups to
being profit centers rather than volunteer organizations committed
to supporting the US.
SCAN11: B2B Vagabond Travel Event -Charlotte Lindholm,
Mikkel Nordberg, Sasha Richards, Victoria Cranmer, Nadia
Bougouneau
SCAN07: Met with Charlotte Lindholm. Charlotte is the newest
member of Atlantic Link. She coordinated the two evening events
for us in Copenhagen and did a great job.
TUR05: Karen is really interested in working with ND (and the
other RMI states). She is very strong in Denmark, but also has a
lot of contacts in Sweden. We told her if she puts together
another sales mission in 2006 0r 2007 she should send us info.
TUR04: Karen is rep for several US states and Icelandair in
Denmark. She would like to put together a proposal on what she
can do for ND in Denmark and possibly Sweden. She will have
something ready to present to us at Pow Wow next Month. She
also wanted to tell us that she is working with Icelandair in putting
together a 5 day training trip to Scandinavia in Sept. (Oslo,
Stockholm, Helsinki and Copenhagen). She said that Pekka from
Icelandair told her to get in touch with us and let us know that we
are invited. The trip is going to cost about $4000 (would include
air, hotels, meals and coordination of training workshops (that
seems a bit high). She will send info on who has been invited to
participate, who has confirmed and anything else that becomes
available.

region for RVs and is interested in working together in the future
on projects that might arise.
ITB10: Stopped by to ask Michael if he know about the Jens
Dagorfa fam coming from Denmark. He didn't but he said that it
would probably handled by the MSP group. Said he would work
with us if we need support.
ITB09: Met with Michael. He heard that we might be planning a
media fam with El Monte and wants to be considered first if they
are flying into Denver. We told him that we would be in touch
when we have something.
ITB08: Had a meeting with Michael to discuss the possibility of
having a Scandinavian or German media group tour our region in
a CA RV. He said they would love to work with us on something
like that. He said that we should contact him directly if we put
something together.
ITB06: Fred spoke to him about Host Fest and the possibility of
developing a package to include Cruise America RVs picked up in
MSP. He will put together a package and send it to Pam Davey.
He said that he can offer a base rate of $69 per day plus miles.
May have 15-18 available from Chaska MN (most of their RVs are
down in the Florida region this time of year). Follow up: Fred

They were both very enthusiastic about working with us and
said that as soon as we had some particulars we should
contact them (Corey). They said that if we were interested,
not only could they provide a RV in MSP, but they could also
provide motorcyles (but they would have to be picked up in
SD). We will keep in touch with them on future projects.

expand into our area. Has a strong online booking program. Can
promote our area for FREE on website with videos. Needs

Canada in 2013 and thought of us for 2014. Later when talking
with Trine and Michael, we discussed fly/drives in and to the area
with a possibility to feature our region in catalog. Trine has already
contact Mathias about the press visit. States/Mathias please keep
in touch on the fly/drive possibility and further information as
needed.

was an exhibitor. She wanted to chat about the problems they
were having on getting product in our region from ATI. They are
currently offering two tours that include our regions (Rocky Mt.
High: 17 days/ Northwest Trails: 16 days). Gave her the list of RMI
receptives. No follow up required.
SCAN2010: (FERIE) Met with Rasmus. He stopped by to ask us if
we knew anything about a ranch that Singer Kenny Rogers owned
in Montana that is now a B&B with a great golf course adjoining it.
(???) He stayed for quite awhile, took all of the states materials
and said that he thought that our region was definitely something
that they could sell. We gave him several multi-state itineraries
Follow up: each state send him a case of VG and 50 maps.
WTM08: Met with Rasmus. Gave him Barbara Stafford's email
address. He is interested in learning more about the region and
possibly meeting with an RMI delegation.

SCAN13/2: Ville was at the Copenhagen event. He said that
there was a feature on our region in Standby about a month ago.
He promised to send a copy to Barbara
PW13: Met with Villi Karup Rasmussen. Stopped by to see how
things went with Henrik's trip last fall. Also checked on our
schedule. He would like to be kept "in the know" about our
Scandinavian Mission in January. Mathias/Fred, please follow up.
SCAN12: Villi met with Barbara to discuss the US insert for 2012.
Told him probably not this year.

Executive
PW11: Villi is aware that we are going to do the Vagabond show
in October. He questioned why we were supporting Vagabond
but were not doing anything with Standby. I pointed out that we
were doing a "show" with Vagabond NOT an ad. Told him that if
we had extra budget we would consider doing something in
Standby.
PW10: Villi dropped by the info for the USA Magazine insert
piece which will be featured in November. This publication has
gone downhill in the last few years and I told him my concerns.
Also, he has a lot of competition from the Swedish USA
Committee's USA supplements and the 4 country Scandinavian
Discover America piece. He assured me that this year would be
better. I could not commit.
WTM07: Met with Mr. Rasmussen. Would like the states to buy
into the magazine again next year. We had an itinerary in this
magazine and sent with Discover America. No call to action.
Doesn't tell you how to book this. SD's ad and ID's ad are both cut
off obscuring ID's contact information. Should do for free next
year. Barbara Stafford please follow up.
PW07/MMP: He asked to be included in all updates of new
product or services in the state. He took all updated information.
PW06: Wanted to know if there was anything that he could do for
us (will probably be contacting us in FY2007 for an ad). We told
him that we would like whatever support he could give us to put
together a RMI travel agent event in Copenhagen next March. He

PW14: Met with Tommy Swanson in the North Dakota booth.
Sells Lufthansa mostly and using Denver as the Gateway for our
region. Discussed revamping the two-page ad in the Swanson
catalog. Ad materials due November 1st. Asked about further
product promotions or features. Doesn't really do a lot of specific
product promotion, however could look at doing an online
promotion for Travel Day and possibly a newsletter mailing.
Mathias follow up on possibilities.
RU12: Anders Persson to attend
NL06/09: boye.jonsson@swansons.se as non-existent email
RU08: Boye Jonsson
PW07: Met with Tommy Swanson. Would like 100 English RAG.
Barbara sat in the meeting. Is interested in adding Idaho too. Most
passengers are coming through Denver - SAS, Lufthansa.
Average length of trip is 14 days. Would like Native American or
cowboy photo for cover of brochure. Is interested in Rodeos,
PowWow schedules. Add an extra attraction. Possibly river
rafting?
SCAN07: Met with Ann shortly prior to the 2007 Swanson event.
She said that they are getting more and more inquiries on the
region. She said that there is a problem with the booking staffs
knowledge of the region and that Tommy had instructed the staff
to spend time educating themselves as much as they can. I told
her that we have been trying to get Boye (Sales manager) over to
our region so that he can help build their enthusiasm. She said
that she will speak to Tommy and Boye about getting him over
there.
Tommy was very pleased that all four states came to Osby to
participate in his annual sales event. He said that he is pleased
with the numbers that the region is generating and that he expects
them to continue to grow. He complimented us on our
perseverance and guaranteed his continued support. He was
also pleased to hear about the media fams planned.
SCAN09/05: Anne Christine is the booking manager for
Swanson's. She and her staff do all the actual flight, rental car
and hotel bookings. She has been to the region and just loves it.

Yellowstone National Park's Old Faithful Lodge.

major newspaper campaign in May-June, Oct-Dec. Cost is $40k
and Icelandair, Hertz and Cruise America have already committed
a bunch of that cost. He will submit a proposal to Barbara about
participating (5 states at $5000/$1000 each). Also, he would like
