Parrish III Chairman of the Board ONLINE ave you ever noticed how children always seem to get sick at night or on a weekend when the doctor’s office is closed? Or you have an accident while fixing your car or making home repairs on the weekend? When that happens, you must make the decision whether to go to the emergency department at Parrish Medical Center (PMC) or wait until the doctor’s office is open for business. Now Parrish Medical Center is giving you another option: the only urgent care center in the Port St. John area. The new Medfast Urgent Care Center, in cooperation with Parrish Medical Center, will open later this summer within the existing Parrish Healthcare Center on Port St. John Parkway. The Medfast Urgent Care Center will serve the residents of Port St. John, Canaveral Groves and the surrounding communities with the same healing environment that you find at Parrish Medical Center in Titusville. And because it will be staffed by Medfast emergency roomexperienced physicians, the center will offer much more than traditional urgent care services. So why are we helping to bring this $1 million community investment to you? Simply, it’s the right thing to do. We didn’t do this alone, though. The Parrish Healthcare Center at Port St. John exists because you told us you wanted convenient, affordable and medically advanced healthcare close to home; physicians who dedicate their full attention and time to the citizens of your community; and a resource with community meeting rooms and other advantages. We listened. Today the Parrish Healthcare Center at Port St. John provides a vast array of healthcare services, and was Florida’s first Silver LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified outpatient care center. And soon it will have a full-service urgent care center unlike any other in Brevard. The Medfast Urgent Care Center will bring the total Parrish investment in Port St. John to more than $35 million. We have made this commitment as part of our nationally recognized, award-winning Parrish Medical Center culture of excellence. As part of that commitment, we have partnered with local board-certified emergency physician David Williams, M.D., who spent time helping in Haiti after the devastating earthquake at the beginning of the year. You can read the full story about the new urgent care center and other new Port St. John services beginning on page 52. As always, I thank you for your support. It is our privilege and our honor to serve your health and wellness needs. The Medfast Urgent Care Center will serve the residents of Port St. John, Canaveral Groves and the surrounding communities with the same healing environment that you find at Parrish Medical Center in Titusville. Daniels C Dean O’Flaherty, tandem jumpmaster at Skydive Space Center, shows his patriotic spirit during a jump as the space shuttle takes off from Kennedy Space Center. Yes, Titusville, home of the world’s highest tandem—two-person—jump. Now, when Cris and Ki go to work at Skydive Space Center, they pack a parachute instead of a briefcase or gym bag. And they don’t call it work at all. “Basically, we get paid to have fun,” Cris says, sporting an earto-ear smile. Fit for Flight Having extreme fun at work is not easy. Sky divers know that safety is supreme and taking care of your body is vital to a successful career. “If you want to have a long career, you must be fit,” says Dean O’Flaherty, tandem jumpmaster at Skydive Space Center. O’Flaherty, 38, has been skydiving for 20 years and has more than 19,000 jumps. He is also a pilot. While his job keeps him very active, O’Flaherty says he makes it a priority to work out at Parrish Health & Fitness Center three to four times a week. Photos: Brian Erler 6 ris and Anna Chiara “Ki” Parente were hooked the first time they tried it. In fact, they began to spend all their time and money making sure they could get more and more of it. Finally, they decided to make a career of it. Cris and Ki are sky divers. “We met at a drop zone in Italy,” recalls Ki, a 34-year-old sky diver and videographer. “I was there every weekend, spending all my money.” Prior to their career shifts, Ki was a competitive swimmer and swim instructor. Cris had spent a year and a half in the Italian Army as a paratrooper and was working as a computer programmer. “Jumping as a paratrooper is not fun at all,” says Cris, 40. “The jumps are low and there is no free fall.” In 2004 the pair made another bold and exciting jump: They left their family and friends in their hometown of Rome to relocate to Titusville. Vim & Vigor • SUM M E R 2 0 1 0 FdVVSU1081_06-7_SkyDivers.indd 6 3/15/10 3:23:08 PM “If you want to have a long career, you must be fit.” —Dean O’Flaherty, tandem jumpmaster with more than 19,000 jumps Jump with the Best Skydive Space Center boasts the fastest sky-dive aircraft, the Beechcraft Turbo King Air, which will safely get you to “jump altitude” in six to eight minutes (versus 20 minutes for most sky-dive aircraft). Jumpers at the center can choose to dive from 18,000 feet, the world’s highest tandem jump; or 15,000 feet, Florida’s highest tandem jump. Anna Chiara “Ki” Parente (right) “floats” through the sky with a video camera on her helmet, ready to capture a jumper’s experience of a lifetime as Cris Parente (in back) does a tandem jump over Titusville. Job Security O’Flaherty says he moved to Titusville from upstate New York for job security. “In New York, the work was seasonal, so I always had to move around,” he says. “Here, it’s yearround and more stable. “This [Skydive Space Center] really is one of the best places to jump because of the weather, the aircraft and the view,” he continues. But he, Cris and Ki emphasize that physical fitness is as much a part of their job security as the weather. Becoming a professional sky diver “was not really a difficult switch from swimming, because the emphasis is on fitness with both,” Ki says. “I simply can’t get lazy—at the drop zone or at the gym.” CALL “I work on my strength and cardio,” O’Flaherty says. “To do tandems, you must be fit and strong. You’re carrying a 60-pound pack, plus another person—up to 250 pounds. Yes, you have to be strong.” The Parentes supplement their job demands with a wellness regimen that includes up to six days a week at the fitness center, focusing on cardio, weight training and yoga. “Yoga is really good for my back and neck,” Cris says. “As a tandem instructor, you get a lot of neck and back strain because you always have someone on you—literally. I love to do the yoga classes at Parrish and just work out the tense muscles.” Ki, who carries her heavy camera equipment on every dive, agrees. Skydive Space Center 476 N. In fact, there were only three chosen in Florida to receive both awards: Parrish Medical Center, Baptist Hospital of Miami and Mayo ClinicJacksonville. The HealthGrades study analyzed patient outcomes at each of the nation’s 5,000 nonfederal hospitals over 2006, 2007 and 2008. Only hospitals in the top 5 percent were honored with HealthGrades’ Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence award. As a recipient of the HealthGrades Outstanding Patient Experience Award in 2009, PMC placed among the top 10 percent in the nation in patient satisfaction. This was measured by patient survey results gathered under the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services’ Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services initiative covering the year ending June 2008. Reward recipients were required to be in the top 15 percent or better. PMC was also a recent recipient of the Orthopedic Surgery and Gastrointestinal Care Excellence awards, and received five-star ratings for treatment of heart attack, heart failure and sepsis, according to HealthGrades. Programs are evaluated against Joint Commission standards for disease-specific certification through an assessment of the program’s processes, its ability to evaluate and improve care within PMC, emphasis on patient selfmanagement, and interviews with patients and staff. A patient’s progression through the program, facility and ultimately discharge (and sometimes post-discharge) is tracked using a tracer evaluation method. “In addition to meeting the rigorous Joint Commission standards for disease-specific care, what really distinguishes PMC is our dedication to our mission—healing experiences for everyone all the time,” says Gloria Velez-Barone, director of the Parrish Human Motion Institute. Nine Gold Seals Parrish Medical Center now has earned nine disease-specific care gold seals of approval from The Joint Commission: 1. Acute coronary syndrome (heart attack treatment) 2. Breast health 6. Diabetes management 3. Heart failure care 7. Hip replacement 4. Knee replacement 8. Palliative (comfort) care 5. Stroke 9. Wound care ONLINE In grade school you might get a gold star for doing something well. In healthcare, hospitals earn gold seals. Parrish Medical Center (PMC) has been awarded two more gold seals in disease-specific care for both hip and knee joint replacement from The Joint Commission. That puts PMC’s total number of Joint Commission disease-specific gold seal certifications at nine—making it one of only five hospitals in the nation to have as many (at press time). The Joint Commission’s Disease-Specific Care Certification Program, launched in 2002, is designed to evaluate disease management and chronic care services that are provided by direct care providers, such as hospitals and home care vendors, as well as health plans and disease management service companies. You can check out all the Joint Commissioncertified hospitals at jointcommission.org. Award-Winning Care Make award-winning Parrish Medical Center your healthcare provider. Bumps and bruises are part of growing up. But what happens when it’s an evening or weekend and Jimmy gets a cut that might need stitches, Mary comes down with possible strep throat, or your husband accidentally stabs himself with a tool while working on the car and can’t remember when he had his last tetanus shot? Your options are limited: Go to the emergency department at Parrish Medical Center or wait until you can see your doctor during regular business hours. What if you had a third option closer to home? You’d get in the car and go, wouldn’t you? Soon, residents of Port St. John, Canaveral Groves and the surrounding communities will be able to do just that. North Brevard’s largest and most comprehensive urgent care center—and the only one in the Port St. John area—will be open later this summer in cooperation with Parrish Medical Center. The $1 million Medfast Urgent Care Center will be within the existing Parrish Healthcare Center (PHC) at Port St. John building at 5005 Port St. John Parkway, between Interstate 95 and Grissom Parkway, open seven days a week. Because it will be staffed by Medfast emergency room-experienced physicians, the center will offer much more than traditional urgent care services for problems such as abdominal pain, asthma/bronchitis/sinusitis, infections, influenza, fractures, cuts requiring stitches, minor injuries, sprains/strains, sports injuries and strep throat. It will also offer occupational medicine/workers’ comp and corporate health services, physicals, and vaccinations. Since opening the PHC three years ago, the advisory committee continues to meet regularly and advise Parrish Medical Center leadership on what programs and services to bring to the community, including urgent care services. “The Parrish mission is healing experiences for everyone all the time, and the urgent care center is another extension of that mission,” says George Mikitarian, Parrish Medical Center’s president and chief executive officer. “That healing mission is why we also have physician offices located at T the healthcare center, to serve the people of Port St. John and surrounding communities.” The urgent care center will bring the total Parrish investment in Port St. John to more than $35 million. Services available now at the Parrish Healthcare Center at Port St. John include advanced digital diagnostic technology (digital mammography, CT, MRI, ultrasound), full-time physician spe cialists, laboratory services, a sleep disorders cen ter, physical therapy, diabetes education, wound care, occupational therapy, and stress testing and other heart-related services. Parrish Home Health expands its coverage of care here is no place like home, especially when you’re sick or injured. Because Parrish Home Health (PHH) has expanded its service coverage, you now have more opportunity to get better at home. Working together with Parrish Medical Center, PHH helps ensure a smooth transition from the hospital to home. The goal is to continue a per son’s healing experience while he or she recovers in the comfort of home. PHH services have expanded in Central Flor ida and now include Cape Canaveral, Christmas, Cocoa, Cocoa Beach, Merritt Island, Mims, Port St. John, Rockledge, Scottsmoor, Sharpes, Titusville and Viera. Talk to your physician or case manager while you’re in the hospital to see if you should have home health care. Generally it is available to recovering, disabled and chronically and terminally ill people who need medical, nursing, social or therapeutic skilled treatments in their own homes. Home Health Care Just Got Easier Considering home health care? Parrish Home Health has a new satellite office at 7075 N. Highway 1, Suite 800, Port St. John. Call 321-268-6275 for more details. Older adults often elect to live independently, instead of in a senior living facility, and receive home care services as they become physically limited. Additionally, adults diagnosed with ter minal illnesses often choose to be cared for at home, where they receive professional, compas sionate care, allowing them to maintain dignity at the end of their lives. A registered nurse, working with your physician, manages the team of healthcare providers that aid in recovery at home. Team members include registered and licensed practical nurses; physical, speech and occupational therapists; medical social workers; and certified home health aides. PHH staff also work closely with Parrish Medical Center consultants to help coordinate the most advanced treatment options available for cancer education, care of wounds and ostomies, dietary management and more. Professional Research Consultants, the pre mier marketing research organization providing services exclusively for the healthcare industry, rated Parrish Home Health as the top home health agency in its database for patient satisfaction. The skilled, dedicated clinicians with Parrish Home Health provide care that heals, educates and empowers patients to live a higher quality of life. By simply saying “thank you,” writing a note, attending a memorial service or making a tribute gift, we can boost morale and show appreciation for those who serve our country and provide the freedoms we enjoy today. Write a letter or essay to a veteran or active soldier. Correspondence with troops overseas is something that is welcomed by veterans and those on active duty. A simple “thank you” note, letter or more extensive essay about how important the sacrifices of veterans and the military are to all people are great ways to honor our American heroes. Teachers and Scout leaders can include an essay-writing exercise in their lessons or meetings. Attend a parade or memorial service. In our community, parades, celebrations and memorial services take place for Memorial Day, Independence Day and Veterans Day. Since these are national holidays, make a point to attend a ceremony with your family. Talk to small children about what it means to be a veteran. Talk about freedom and the love of country. Have a child personally thank a veteran and shake his or her hand. Make a gift to honor or memorialize your heroes. Many people have family and close friends who have served in the military. Make a gift to honor those who have served or memorialize those who have given their lives in the ultimate sacrifice for freedom. 54 As more baby boomers near retirement, the importance of aging well has gained significant attention. Research suggests that having a positive sense of purpose and an expression of goals can affect your well-being—and even help fight disease. One popular story features John D. Rockefeller. At age 54, this intense, success-driven billionaire suffered from a plethora of physical ailments and was given one year to live. Then Rockefeller redirected his life’s mission toward caring for others through philanthropy. His health rallied and he lived to be 98. As research continues to explore the link between a sense of purpose and physical health, part of your strategy for healthy living could be to support Parrish Medical Center’s mission of providing excellent healthcare. Consider including Jess Parrish Medical Foundation in your plans. Vim & Vigor • SUM M E R 2 0 1 0 FdVVSU1081_54-5_FdnFocus.indd 54 3/15/10 3:29:38 PM Live Generously.
