J THE A C K S O N & D U B O I S W Y O M I N G T V R C E D U C AT I O N F O U N D AT I O N Annual Report 2011 L E T T E R D from the I R E C T O R relationships Friends of Teton Valley Ranch Camp, I am pleased to present you with The TVRC Education Foundation’s annual report for the year ending October 31, 2011. We are proud to say that this report reflects the successful operation of Teton Valley Ranch Camp as well as the generosity of our camp community. The story of Teton Valley Ranch Camp is one that is built on fundamental relationships. The first is the relationship that we have with each other. The second is the relationship each of us has with the natural environment of western Wyoming. Most importantly it is the relationships shared by multiple generations—father to son, mother to daughter, and grandparent to grandchild—that have made the TVRC experience stand apart in the American camping industry. We believe these relationships are at the core of who we are. We hope to highlight that experience in this year’s annual report. I would like to personally thank all of those who made 2011 a wonderful year. From campers and staff, to board members, alumni and donors, thank you for all you have done to further advance the TVRC experience. With all the spirit and enthusiasm of camp, Tom Holland L e gacy Memories Arrival Day Hu n g e r F a m i l y Elaine Strodel Hunger Camp Alum: 1946-1947; Camp Parent: 1970-1979; Camp Grandparent: 2007-2012 It is so awesome to think of how many in our family have enjoyed experiences at Teton Valley Ranch Camp—3 generations, 10 people! Many years ago, growing up in Winnetka, IL, my older brother, Dick Strodel, had a friend, Sam Earp, who talked non-stop about the wonderful time he had at Teton Valley Ranch Camp. The very next summer my brother, Dick, went to TVRC! Dick came back and told many wonderful stories of his time at the ranch and insisted that the family come to Final Rodeo the next summer. We drove out from Winnetka and I will never forget the beautiful sight of approaching Togwotee Pass and seeing the Tetons for the first time. We stayed at Moosehead Ranch in the valley and went to Final Rodeo. That did it! The next summer in 1946, the Wilsons added girls’ season and I was so happy to go. We rode the train from Chicago to Rock Springs where there were buses to take us to Jackson. The next summer, after completing my freshman year at New Trier High School, ten girlfriends from my class came with me to be campers at Teton Valley Ranch Camp! Later, my son David was a camper, also his three sisters in turn….Deb, Missy and Drew. Deb’s daughter, Emily, was a camper for four summers and her son, Garrett, will be a Trailblazer this summer, 2012. Together we have many, many cherished memories of Teton Valley Ranch Camp. “ ...my older brother, Dick Strodel, had a friend, Sam Earp, who talked non-stop about the ” w o n d e r f u l t i m e h e h a d a t T e t o n V a l l e y R a n c h C a m p. Deb Hunger Connor Camp Alum: 1970-1973; Camp Staff: 1974-1975 and 1978-1987; Camp Parent: 2007-2012 I still can remember the day my older brother, David, jumped on the train at Penn Station to go to the wilds of Wyoming. I cried and cried as I wanted it to be my turn. Two years later, there I was, standing on the platform of Penn Station, cowboy hat in hand ready for my journey to TVRC. We travelled to Chicago where we spent a day sightseeing before reloading the train heading west. After 2 long days, we finally arrived in Rock Springs, WY eager to board a bus for the final leg of our journey to Kelly, WY. I remember arriving late at night and making my way to an empty top bunk by a window. I was so exhausted that I immediately fell asleep…too tired to be homesick. I awoke the next morning with a spectacular view of the majestic Tetons from my top bunk. This was the first of over twenty arrivals to the ranch for me and my children. But it wasn’t. The back of the car was filled with my sister’s luggage and she was on the brink of tears. My mother on the other hand, was the opposite. She was driving extra slow to savor every moment. A line of cars formed behind us. When we finally arrived at the Dining Hall, I fell in love. I fell in love with the barn, the hills, the Green, the cabins, and the staff. As we pulled up to the Backpacking Shed, we were greeted with smiles and cheerfulness. We unpacked my sister’s things at her cabin and explored the land we had waited to see. As the sun began to set, we had to be leaving. My sister had gone over the edge and practically begged us not to leave her, but we had to. As we began the journey back to our home, my thought during my last glimpse of the ranch was “I’ll be back”. “ ...I fell in love with the barn, the hills, the Green, the cabins, and the staff. ” Photo: Wink Craigmile 1946 Craigmile Family Winston “Wink” Craigmile Camp Alum: 1939-1941; Camp Staff: 1946; Camp Parent: 1972-1974; Camp Grandparent: 2004-2006, 2008-2009 Wink Craigmile, who passed away in 2011, attended TVRC during its opening year, 1939, and returned in subsequent years as a camper and a counselor. He arrived at camp via train from Chicago, was met at the station in Rock Springs and driven to the camp by Weenie Wilson. Camp was 8 weeks long back then. When Wink later returned as a counselor, he brought along his youngest brother, Donald Craigmile, and when the camp season was over, they returned home by hitch hiking from Jackson Hole to Chicago! “ . . . Seeing the Tetons, either for the first time for new campers, or again for returning campers, always sent a chill down the spine. ” Jeff Craigmile Camp Alum: 1972-1974; Camp Staff: 1977; Camp Parent: 2004-2006, 2008-2009 I attended camp as a Rough Rider, Top Hand and Wrangler in ’72, ’73 and ’74 and returned as a Junior Counselor in ’77. Arrival day as a Rough Rider was full of excitement, anticipation and new experiences. For many of us, it was our first trip alone on a plane. In ’72, we travelled from Denver on Aspen Airways, which flew old propeller planes that bounced around like ping pong balls in the mountain air. There were a lot of kids who arrived in Jackson looking pretty green. Seeing the Tetons, either for the first time for new campers, or again Photo: Jeff Craigmile 1974 for returning campers, always sent a chill down the spine. Finding out which cabin you were in, meeting your cabin mates and your counselor was always the best part of the day, that is until the dinner bell rang and we got to have ranch food for the first time. The kitchen staff served us roast beef, potatoes and gravy on my first night at camp! The food was always fantastic at camp. By the next day, though, we were on our way—to the trading post for all our gear and then down to the barn for first degree horsemanship and on to a summer full of fantastic trips and experiences at TVRC. Michael Craigmile Camp Alum: 2004-2006; Camp Staff: 2009 My first time attending TVRC, in the summer of 2004, was one of the most exciting days of my life. Eight years down the road, it still stands out to me. Getting on a plane for the first time by myself was scary and exciting. Flying into Jackson Hole and seeing the Tetons for the first time made me realize what a special place I was going to. But what really made the experience was the welcome that all of the staff gave me, I felt right at home immediately. Soon I would be trekking to the tops of mountains I had heard stories about since my childhood, and riding on pack strings just like my dad and granddad did before me. Every year, until I finished my Trailblazer year, I looked forward to returning to the ranch, and every year the same sense of excitement on arrival day returned. And through these relationships with people, I am reminded of my deep connection to camp and the land which sparks a million memories. We remember how far we pushed ourselves to get to the top of a peak, or what it felt like to wrangle horses connections before dawn, or what it means to be part of a team. We take these memories and apply the lessons we learned at camp to our daily lives and become better people, more thoughtful, more cognizant of our impact on the land, reminded that it’s important to preserve camp so that generations of children to come can experience what we so dearly love. Nothing meant more to me than seeing my daughter’s face at the end of her Yearling year and knowing how much she’d seen and grown. She said, like I did 30 years earlier, that she could be her “true self ” at camp. What a gift it is to give our children: a safe place to come, experiment, achieve things they never thought possible, gain skills and confidence, and a respect for the west that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. I will never forget being 12 years old and landing at the Jackson Hole airport for the first time and seeing THOSE MOUNTAINS. Even now, after I’ve made that journey dozens of times, I feel butterflies in my stomach in anticipation of what I’ll learn this next time in the mountains. Thank you for your commitment and connection to camp. Thank you to the staff for respecting our many traditions and continuing to create an atmosphere where our children and grandchildren can explore, be challenged, and have a whole lot of plain old fun.
