PRSRT STD U.S. POSTAGE PAID KATY, TX. PERMIT #137 The Official Newsletter for Hearthstone Your newsletter can now be viewed online at www.krenekprinting.com (Newsletters - Hwy 6 Area - Hearthstone) HEARTHSTONE PARK IMPROVEMENTS As spring approached, the HOA and Spencer Road PUD had begun maintenance and improvements to Hearthstone Park. We started with major tree pruning, replenishing playground safety surfacing, replacement of worn swings and painting the perimeter fence. Next will be upgrades to the Memory Garden and drainage improvements. In March, we met with the Spencer Road PUD Board. This was the culmination of discussions that have played out over the course of a few months. The result was everyone agreeing to refurbish the track in our park. You will hear a great deal about the project over the next few weeks but I thought this might be a good place to start. For those of you who use the walking/jogging track, you’ve probably noticed the wear and tear. The rubberized track surface should have lasted 8 to 10 years before needing repair. But unfortunately, it did not. The work took place in June and the park will be TOTALLY closed for a couple of weeks. The Constables will help enforce our closing. It is very important that no one enters the park while the work is going on. Fencing will be placed at each entrance and signs will be posted. Although you may not see workers there at all times, the new coating on the track needs time to cure and there are several steps that make up the entire process. As soon as we can safely open the park, we will remove the barriers. Please help us while the park is closed by not entering and if you see someone inside, call the Constables. When the park reopens there will be changes and re-emphasis on the rules for using the track. Most important, the track is to be used for foot traffic only. No bikes, skateboards, roller blades or anything that will cause damage to the new coating will be allowed. Lightweight strollers will not damage it. Bike racks have been provided in the park for visitors. When the park reopens, we will post new signs addressing the use of the track. The signs will read something like “Track is for foot traffic only, no bikes, no skateboards, no razor scooters.” The Constables will again help us remind those in the park to adhere to the rules. We certainly hope each and every one of the residents will follow the rules and share this with neighbors. Before you ask, the contractor said young children being pushed in strollers won’t hurt! (Nor will our more mature neighbors using walkers.) All other wheeled devices are strictly forbidden. It’s our money that maintains the park both through annual assessments and water fees and we all need to protect our investment. We strongly believe the park helps to improve our home values. Let’s work together to keep the park nice. Hearthstone July 2016 1 LOU'S PAINTING, Ltd. Hearthstone HOA Board of Directors HEARTHSTONE YARD OF THE MONTH The Hearthstone Garden Club Yard of the Month committee suspended selection for the month of May due to the recent flooding. We appreciate the support and our thoughts are with all affected. HEARTHSTONE STREETLIGHTS The Hearthstone HOA coordinates maintenance of all the streetlights throughout the community. This includes the “cobra head” lights like you see along many streets and highways, as well as the decorative light poles along Huffmeister and in some of the neighborhoods. Cobra head streetlights need to be reported to CenterPoint, using the pole number, which is the “address” for the light. It is a six digit number facing the street. You can report streetlights that are not working or staying on during the day at http://cnp.centerpointenergy.com/outage (Google streetlight outage) or give us the pole number and we will do it for you. Outages or problems with decorative streetlights should be reported to PCMI at 281-870-0585. Please note the exact intersection or closest address. The association has a contractor doing a monthly nighttime inspection for lights that are out, but if you see a problem, please report it, so we can achieve our goal to keep all the lights on all the time. Call the constable’s office anytime you see a suspicious person and do not let race, age or gender influence you calling (a suspicious person is anyone you do not recognize on your street). 2. Call the constable’s office when you see a suspicious vehicle (any vehicle parked in front of your neighbor’s home or driving around your street that you don’t recognize). 3. Always keep all your doors and windows locked even when you are at home. 4. Always keep your overhead garage door in the down position. 5. Remember neighbors looking out for neighbors are how the police catch the bad guys. 6. Make sure to do a vacation watch whenever you go out of town. 7. If someone comes to your door, always go to the door and acknowledge that you are there and remember to never open the door for anyone that you do not know. The bad guys in almost all cases do not want you to be home. Then always call the constable’s office so that we can check them out. When they leave your house, they are going to your neighbors. 8. If you have children that stay at home alone, no matter what their age, they need to go to the door and have a preplanned story for whoever is there (my dad is working on the computer, he says to come back later). Then have them call the constable’s office. 9. Never do business with people you don not know and trust. Never open the door for solicitors. If no one in the neighborhood buys anything from them, the companies that they work for will quit sending them into your subdivision. 10. Always lock your vehicles and never leave anything of value in plain sight (covering up an item with a jacket doesn’t count). Our dispatch number is 281-463-6666 (please put this number in your cell phone as 911 constable or A constable so that it is one of the first contacts). Scouts GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL COPPER CREEK MEADOWS COMMUNITY The community Bridging Ceremony held in May was our last “official “event of the school year. Our bridging troops showed off their artistic talents with the beautiful butterflies and flowers that decorated the stage! It is always a pleasure to hear about the activities and projects these troops have worked on and to see the smiling faces as the girls cross the bridge and don their new vests and sashes. We would particularly like to thank troop 113035. This bridging troop performed our flag ceremony and also helped to clean up afterwards. You could see these Girl Scouts really work together as they carried the dis-assembled bridge out to the parking lot! Many thanks to Julie Mayer, who coordinated the event and to all those who participated. • Troop 16162 reports that they were able to pack about 75 bags with cereal, protein, vegetables, fruit, juice boxes, peanut butter, jelly and snacks. All these bags were collected for Cy-Hope’s backpack program. This program provides food for children during the summer and weekends when school breakfast and lunch programs do not operate. BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA COPPERHEAD DISTRICT For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards. Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high selfesteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made. Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). Our Units typically meet weekly. Lawn Sprinkler Repairs & Upgrades Online Appointment Setting • Troop 16399 has been working hard for the SPCA. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through July. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient. DR. LARA-ANN CLINTON DR. FOSTER CHILDREN: PREPARATION FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL) When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives with hands-on community service? Contact info@ncjwhouston.org or see www.ncjwhouston.org. Hearthstone Provides Free Counseling to Troops and Families Since September 11, 2001, 1.8 million troops have been deployed in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Persian Gulf, with 17 percent of returning troops suffering traumatic brain injuries or post-traumatic stress disorder. Given the military culture’s emphasis on confidence, strength and bravery, many service members are reluctant to expose personal vulnerabilities to professional counselors. Give an Hour™ provides services that are separate from the military establishment, offering options to service members who might otherwise fail to seek or receive appropriate care. Give an Hour™ is a nonpartisan, nonprofit national network of mental health professionals providing free counseling services to returning troops and their families. Give an Hour™ offers services to veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and their family members. Family members are loosely defined to include married or unmarried partners, parents, siblings, aunts/uncles—anyone connected to the veteran who is suffering a psychological effect related to the veteran’s service. Banyan Counseling Network has an office located near the North Cypress Medical Center and is trained to provide individual and family counseling. Family support groups are also currently forming. People interested in receiving services through Give an Hour™ are encouraged to call 281-855-1982 or log on to www. banyancounseling.com, (click Military Families link) or www. giveanhour.org to determine availability or to locate another provider in your area. Add to that our stable of B-Cycles (rental bikes stationed all over central city) and you have the makings for an awesome evening bike ride! Join Bayou City Outdoors as we lead the group for an easy 6 - 8 mile ride stopping for about 30 minutes to watch the bats pour out and then onto to downtown for the adventurous. We’ll stop at a local watering hole and be back by 10:30 PM. If 10:30 PM is past your bedtime, we will be stopping at our parking lot on the way downtown to drop off our early birds.
