HBHS played Wanganui High School in the first game winning 4-2. The second game would be more of a test against Super 8 School New Plymouth BHS. With end to end attack and some questionable team defence from both teams HBHS lost 4-3 which meant they needed to win the last pool game to make the top half. A win in the third game against Rosmini was never in doubt from the first whistle as Hastings went on full attack ending up with a convincing 7-0 win. The Wednesday game is always the big game at both India Shield and Rankin Cup. Winning for the top 8 teams means promotion to Rankin Cup and a loss for the bottom 8 teams means relegation from India Shield. Hastings Boys' played unbeaten Mount Albert Grammar in their all or nothing match. The game ended with a 4-1 win for us. Hastings Boys’ High School totally dominated the game and it was a fitting way to make history as they qualified for Rankin Cup for the first time. In the semi final on Thursday HBHS totally dominated the game against Nelson College playing a fantastic style of hockey with some incredibly high skill sets on show. The game ended up with a 6-2 win with Manu Henderson and Jake Webber scoring and Dylan Thomas scoring four. The final was against a very good Rangitoto College coached by NZ Men's Black Stick Jan Peterson. HBHS again played with real energy and determination dictating large passages of play. Rangitoto did have their chances however as HBHS goalkeeper Alex Withington made some excellent saves. Captain Mitchell Bradley played really well as did midfielders Adam Wrigley, Joshua Wray and defender Lee Phillips. The game ended with a 4-1 win to Hastings' in what really was a great team effort with all players taking responsibility for their performances. History has been made by this incredible group of young men as Hastings Boys' have now won back to back national titles and India Shield for the first time in their history since the trophy was first presented by a touring national Indian team in 1955. It was thrilling to have the support of students from school who had the opportunity to watch the final.. The haka performed in the grandstand by the supporting boys from HBHS was a memory that will last forever for the team and coaches alike. Ranfurly Shield visits Hastings Boys’ THANKS AGAIN TO OUR SPONSORS FOR THEIR CONTINING SUPPORT Page 1 Ex. Student & All BlackDanny Lee Sports Academy http://www.hastingsboys.school.nz/ Mr Sturch & Danny Lee Senior Basketball Hastings Boys’ High School Senior ‘A’ Basketball team travelled to Wellington during winter tournament week to compete in the premiership tournament. The side managed to go unbeaten throughout all pool play and play offs with noticeable wins against St Johns Hastings who they smashed 73-35. The Second pool game was against St Pats Silverstream where Hastings managed to dominate for the majority of the game. Going into the 4th Quarter already up by 37 points. Shayden King Edwards on top form with the ball scored 15 points and was the top scorer for a second game in a row. Meeting Super 8 rivals, Palmerston North in the 3rd game was a key indicator of the power Hastings Boys’ held at this tournament. Geoff Heather and Jacob Nahora kept control of this encounter scoring 16 and 14 points respectively. Although down 28 points in the 3rd quarter Palmerston Boys’ tried to climb back into the game but the dominance of the Hastings Boys’ shooters finished them off 77-61. Already though to the Quarter Final, Hastings Boys’ quickly knocked over Scots College in the 4th game. A monstrous 97-57 win with Josh Anderson the star of the show scoring almost a third of the points at 32 and in defence replied with 12 rebounds. For the quarter final it was a match up against Super 8 and local rivals Napier Boys. Hastings Boys’ were a dominant force in this game through Jacob Nahora, KAleb Edwards and Soul Sadler performing best with the ball. An unbeaten run put Hastings Boys’ into the semi final against Hutt Valley. Once again Hastings Boys’ were just too strong and managed to dominate the game by nearly 30 points. Matt Bird stole the show in the semi final scoring 27 points and Jacob Nahora not far behind with 21 Points. Although the win put Hastings Boys’ into the final it was not the time for Injuries. Captain Geoff Heather and super sub Harris Solomon both went down injured which put them out for the final. Although through to Nationals, it was a huge blow to the team who wanted to maintain their winning streak. Having beaten St. Pats Silverstream earlier on in the week in pool play quite convincingly, Hastings were hungry for the title. The loss of two fantastic players played into the hands of the opposition. Hastings Boys went down 80-65, but didn't go down without a fight. Shayden Kind Edwards and Mataeus Marsh both stepping up the plate with 15 and 12 points respectively. Overall it was a fantastic performance by the Senior ‘A’ team and hopefully a quick recovery for Geoff Heather and Harris Solomon will put them in a good position to fight for the title. Junior Basketball The Hastings Boys’ Junior Basketball attended the Lower North Island Regional Premiership. The team progressed through pool play relatively unchallenged beating Hutt International Boys School 112-46 and Wanganui High School 82-59. Having qualified to the Quarter finals which were played on Sunday meant Hastings Boys’ were reduced to 7 players. This gave the boys energy to play and managed to play our best game of the tournament convincingly beating Rongotai College 80-48. The Hastings Boys’ side were dominating the tournament in terms of scores. The attacking plays from the team was exceptional. Qualifying for the semi finals meant that Hastings Boys’ would be playing against Wellington College. Unfortunately the game did not go our way, with the score finishing 82-93 in favour of Wellington College. The score lines and stats up showed how capable we were going forward. Throughout the tournament Hastings Boys’ scored an outstanding 442 points, but in defence they conceded 302 points. Each of our boys were averaging above 10 points a game with an amazing effort from Amariah Luki who averaged 32 points per game. Going into the final day for the 3rd/4th playoff against Lindisfarne College was going to be a battle against our local rivals. The boys played with heart and spirit finishing the game 86-61. Hastings Boys’ played hard, played with commitment to each other and were great ambassadors for HBHS School and your families. Thanks to Haisley Mitchell for all his efforts this year. A huge thanks to all the parents who provided support throughout the whole season. Page 2 Under 15 Rugby The effort and development of the players involved in the U15 Campaign was a huge success. The players stuck to the plan designed by the coaches and volume of training asked of them which included 6 trainings per week prior to the tournament. Players stuck to the game plans which were devised to suit our squad composition. Every player improved in all aspects of our development prior to Tournament. The opening game of the tournament started fantastically with Hastings Boys’ thumping Wellington College 53-3. This gave the boys a mountain of confidence to face a strong St. Bedes side. The Hastings Boys’ played a fantastic flowing style of rugby that left supporters and onlookers in awe. With a couple of referee calls not going the Hastings Boys’ way the boys kept in the game coming out with a draw of 12 all. In a must win game to qualify for the top 8, a clash against Super 8 rivals, Hamilton Boys’ it was going to be a tough battle to win. Still producing some fine rugby through the forwards the Hastings Boys’ were unable to convert possession. Going down 17-0 meant that a reshuffle of targets and goals. There was one in sight and that was finishing top of the bottom 8. Up stepped Tauranga Boys’ who were swiftly pushed off in a 33-7 win to Hastings Boys’. The next must win was against another Super 8 rival, Palmerston North Boys’ The boys showed resilience to push through the Palmerston North Boys’ onslaught. The second half proved to be the clincher when Hastings Boys’ prevailed with a 19-10 win. On the final day, with a few tired legs and a lot of fine rugby been played, Hastings Boys’ were in they play off the set out for. Up stepped a Rotorua Boys’ side that were hungry to beat their Super 8 counterparts. Hastings Boys’ again played some fantastic rugby that showed sides in the top 8 of their capabilities. Later in the second half Rotorua Boys’ battled on and managed to squeeze through with a 36-33 win. The outcome of the Tournament was disappointing, 10th. In the end, Hamilton Boys and St.Bedes went into to the final easily winning their Semi Finals 25-0 and 17-0 respectively. This showed that we were at the same level and probably in the top 6 teams at Tournament. The major highlight of the tournament was the player’s commitment and trust in each other especially in the Hamilton Boys game which was 0-0 at Half time. Huge hearts and resilience shown, especially after the draw with St. Bedes. The Hastings Boys’ Under 15 side showed the Super 8 school what was to come in the future beating 4 of the Super 8 schools. Special mentions go to MVP’s; Kianu Keruru-Symes, AJ Mua, Lincoln McLutchie, Hunta Marsh and Liam Bauckman. The most improved were Nathan Epplett, Petera Kahui-Ariki, Tane Hohipa and Danny Toala The parental support was fantastic and lifted the players in tough games. A huge amount of work was done by the parents of Petera, Nathan and Hunta. Under 14 Rugby The Hastings Boys’ Under 14 rugby side travelled to Palmerston North for the Under 14 Colquhoun Tournament hosted by Palmerston North Boys’ High School. With a tough start against Wellington College the Hastings Boys’ side came out strong and fought right to the end. A 10-7 victory helped the boys get the momentum they needed to be competitive this tournament. A second game in the afternoon against hosts, Palmerston North was going to be challenging. Once again Hastings Boys’ came out with some strong plays. A tough game with very little points scored saw a 12 all draw to finish the first day. On the second day and needing a win to make the top half, Tauranga Boys’ came top the table. Hastings Boys’ were just too strong closing out the game in the second half with a conversion. The game finished 17-15 and Hastings Boys’ progressed through unbeaten so far. The Hastings Boys’ side were beginning to get tired. Two games a day was becoming demanding on the boys and in the second to last game against Gsiborne Boys’ it really showed. Chasing the game through mistakes, the side never looked like knocking Gisborne Boys’ over. Going down 25-19 was disappointing. Trying no to dwell on missed chances on the previous day due to tiredness, this meant the Hastings Boys’ side needed to win in order to finish 3rd. Against Super 8 rivals, Rotorua Boys’ it was exactly how they wanted to perform. The depth of the team was shining through. An unfortunate injury to Bronson Morris spurred the boys to finish on a high, knocking over Rotorua Boys’ convincingly 27-12. The team was well supported by travelling parents and family at all the games. The depth of the squad proved the difference throughout the tournament. A constant rotation of the team due to injury and fatigue meant that fresh legs were always available and all players stood up. Page 3 Australia Rugby Tour In July a group of 20 boys travelled to the Gold Coast, Australia for a rugby tour. The group of boys were chosen as part of a core group that have showed potential to represent the school in rugby at higher honours. Throughout the 2012 and 2013 year the students worked hard to raise money for trip. The tour was a great success after successfully winning the Gold Coast Rugby Spirit Award for sportsmanship and excellent team spirit throughout the tournament. Below are a few photos of the tour. Dylan was selected during the National Under 18 Regional tournament when he was playing for Central Districts. Dylan was selected as part of the 30 man squad who will attend a training camp on 4th to 6th October at which point the squad will be reduced to 18. This is a fantastic feat for someone of Dylan's age who is still eligible to play in 2014. The 18 man team will then travel to Australia to play a 3 game series against the Australia Under 18 side in December. This is a fantastic opportunity for Dylan to achieve a massive honour within the Hockey Community. It has come through hard work and some exceptional performances throughout the year including top goal scorer at India Shield with 13 goals and runner up top scorer at the Super 8 hockey tournament. We wish Dylan all the best at the training camp and all hockey in the future. Photo: Jay Hughes THANKS VERY MUCH TO OUR SCHOOL’S SUPPORTERS Page 5 Senior ‘A’ dominate Super 8 Basketball A Hastings Boys’ side flowing with talent showed the Super 8 schools the way with an outstanding performance at the Super 8 Basketball tournament held at Hastings Sports Centre. Having narrowly missed out on winning in 2012, the Mr. Wooten coached side were back and ready to show what they had. The first game against Rotorua was a fantastic start to the tournament. Shayden King Edwards stole the show slotting 21 points and in defence rebounding 12. The side ran into the 90 point section with all players contributed to the win showing the depth of the Hastings Boys’ side. A 92-72 win was just the start they needed. A second game that day against Super 8 stalwarts, Hamilton Boys’ was a similar scenario. Once again the depth of the side shone through with all 12 players coming off the bench to score points in a 85-64 thrashing. Some great defensive work and some slick shooting from senior players Shayden King Edwards, Geoff Heather and Matt Bird helped steer the side home. Day 2 crept around and Tauranga Boys’ were next. This proved to be the most challenging game. Having already qualified through to the semis, Hastings Boys’ wanted to stamp their authority on the tournament. After a slow start and going down by 12 points at the half time break, it took some excellent work by Jacob Nahora to score some vital points. Netting an impressive 22 points in a game that came down to just 5 points difference. The game came down to the 4th quarter where Hastings Boys’ finished 73-68. This meant they finished their pool play unbeaten. Into the semi finals stepped Hastings Boys’ against a well balanced Palmerston Boys’. In a low scoring semi final, Hstings Boys’ came out on top winning 56-48. Once again the game came down to the wire. Missed opportunities weren't going to let Hastings Boys’ down and up stepped Jacob Nahora again. Having a fantastic game Jacob scored 14 points, 10 steals and 11 rebounds. Geoff Heather was strong in defence claiming 10 rebounds. The Hastings Boys’ side weren't going to let this slip. Thanks to some slick shooting from Shayden King Edwards, Jacob Nahora and Geoff they remained unbeaten. Hastings Boys’ then played the final against a good Tauranga Boys’ that had been the only challengers to Hastings Boys’ so far. The previous pool game had been a nail biter. The preparation for the final was in place. Hastings Boys’ had the game plan set and the side was ready. In front of a strong Hastings Boys’ home crowd the final commenced. The first quarter didn't go as planned with some sloppy defence and mistakes in attack saw the side down 12point at the first break. The second and third quarter saw a complete turn around. Hastings Boys’ put the pressure on with a full court defence which forced Tauranag into mistakes. The Hastings Boys’ capitalised on this with some great shooting and stormed into a 27 point lead at the end of the third quarter. Once again the depth of the side was shown, when all bench players were used. Jacob Nahora, Shayden King Edwards and Geoff stole the show in attack scoring 20,13 and 14 respectively. With a comfortable lead into the fourth quarter meant Hastings Boys’ just had top keep their momentum going. As the buzzer went a huge roar from the crowd was heard as Hastings Boys’ ran out super 8 winners, winning 85 –66. Throughout the tournament Shayden King Edwards and Geoff Heather produced some fantastic basketball and were deservedly selected into the tournament team. For Hastings Boys’ a magnificent performance by Jacob Nahora saw him named as the MVP also. A fantastic display of team work and courage saw Hastings Boys’ attain the Super 8 Basketball title in what seems to be one of the top sporting team performances of the 2013 year. Page 6 Field and Nash Selected into NZ U15s Football Team Last month Sam Field and Dominic Nash took part in a New Zealand Secondary Schools Under 15 Football trial where they were both successfully selected into a New Zealand side that will travel to Malaysia for 11 days. Sam and Dominic were nominated to attend the trial after some outstanding performances in the Hastings Boys’ 1st XI football team. At such a young age, Sam and Dominic have been vital to the success of the Hastings Boys’ 1st XI this year. The boys travelled to their trial where there were around 60 other players trialling for the same team. The Hastings Boys’ players impressed the coaches with their skills, speed and intensity that has been a focal point of the Hastings Boys’ 1st XI style of play. It is an impressive feat to have two boys from the same school represented in a New Zealand side. The hard work of not only players, but the coaching work being put into the players through the Academies and Junior Teams is paying off. We wish Sam and Dominic the very best of luck on their tour to Malaysia.
