It is one of the best preserved areas in the Alpine range and has been able to develop in harmony with nature, without damaging the environment, nor spoiling customs and traditions, which make up the deeply-rooted cultural heritage of the mountain people. Discovering Carnia means enjoying nature, sport, amusement, but also quiet, as well as gastronomy with very tasty local dishes. The territory of Carnia is particularly suitable for sports, such as skiing in winter and mountain biking in summer, but also climbing and horse riding, paragliding and canoeing, without forgetting the hikes along nature trails of rare beauty. You will also find art and history, preserved by museums, parish churches, churches and important archaeological sites, such as that of Zuglio, and perfectly preserved old town centres, with the characteristic stone and wood buildings. It is pleasant to reach the pretty small Alpine lakes, the countless waterfalls and the various waterways, crossing thick woods rich in herbs and flowers, where you will have the chance to see wild animals, such as chamois, badgers, roe deer, eagles and owls. During the year, in the towns, it is still possible to find the genuineness of the folk festivals, celebrated according to age-old customs. The Marinelli Alpine hut Relaxing on the fields Lake of Bordaglia Roman excavations in Zuglio The parish church of San Pietro Zoncolan, Tamai Alpine hut Carnia and its valleys They say that Carnia resembles a big hand, whose palm is the valley furrowed by the Tagliamento river and the fingers are the valleys dug by its tributaries. Let’s discover it together! We find the main town, Tolmezzo, in the Tagliamento Valley, together with the well-known holiday resort of Forni di Sopra, dominated by the peaks of the Friulian Dolomites. The Lumiei Valley leads to the charming village of Sauris, the highest municipality in Friuli, facing a deep lake, while the Degano valley leads to Forni Avoltri, famous for its international Biathlon centre. The Pesarina Valley is a natural charm, with its characteristic villages of Prato Carnico and Pesariis, while the Bût Valley is the realm of wellbeing and sports, thanks to the spa of Arta Terme and to the Olympic town of Paluzza, the ideal “base camp” for climbing and cross-country skiing. The Valcalda, with Ravascletto, is the motherland of the most traditional gastronomy and, thanks to its skilift facilities that lead to Mounts Zoncolan and Tamai, it is an important winter resort as well. A wilder valley is that of Chiarsò, with the beautiful valley of Paularo, one of the most densely populated towns in Carnia. Archaeology: many archaeological finds provide evidence of the important role played by the territory from prehistory to the Middle Ages as a crossroads of cultural and trade exchanges. Handicraft: working of wood, of stone and of wrought iron; textiles made with hand looms, scarpets (slippers). Gastronomy and typical products: honey, jams, distillates, various kinds of cheese, aromatic herbs, ham, mushrooms, radic di mont, biscuits, cjarsons (sweet or herb ravioli), frico (a typical dish based on melted cheese), polenta. Active tourism: Alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, Biathlon, snowshoeing, cycling, canyoning, trekking, horse riding, climbing, windsurfing and sailing, gliding, orienteering, football, tennis, target-shooting, archery, sport fishing, safe driving circuit. Shepherd’s huts and Alpine huts: where to stop and refresh oneself outside towns and villages. Spas: spa treatments, physiotherapy and rehabilitation, water wellness, beauty and fitness at the spa of Arta Terme. TAGLIAMENTO VALLEY The heart of Carnia, furrowed by the Tagliamento river and by its tributaries, it is a wide and open valley, which from the shores of the lake of Cavazzo stretches up to the snow-covered runs of Varmost in Forni di Sopra, the “Pearl of the Alps”, crossing the chief town, Tolmezzo, with its historic buildings, an important ethnographic museum (“Michele Gortani” Carnic Museum of Folk Arts and Traditions), an eighteenthcentury cathedral, the remains of the town walls (Porta di Sotto) and the Picotta Tower. Many are the possibilities to spend holidays surrounded by the nature of the wonderful mountains of Carnia: equipped sports facilities, which range from manèges to football pitches, tennis courts and swimming pools, cross-country and Alpine ski runs, gliding areas, practice walls for rock climbing, mountain bike and trekking trails. Gourmands and those who love to discover traditional flavours will find a wide choice of restaurants, inns, trattorie, farm restaurants and Alpine huts, where it is still possible to taste and enjoy the old recipes of Carnia’s cuisine with its authentic aromas. From an artistic and cultural point of view, in these municipalities you will find many parish churches, small fifteenth-century churches and valuable exhibitions of international level in Illegio. Handicraft shops are scattered in the valley. Degano Valley and Pesarina Valley LUMIEI VALLEY From Ampezzo the road wedges for about ten kilometres, alternating spectacular combinations of rocks, gorges and tunnels, which follow the course of the Lumiei stream, opening onto the green lake and reaching the village of Sauris, where you will find houses and farmhouses characterised by peculiar and unspoilt architecture. VAL DEL BÛT The channel of San Pietro, a combination between the past and the present, crossed by the so-called Via Iulia Augusta, is one of Carnia’s most beautiful areas. Traced by the Romans to link Aquileia (the second port and trading centre of the Roman empire) to Zuglio (Iulium Carnicum) and the transalpine lands, crossing the Pass of Monte Croce Carnico until reaching and going past today’s Austrian town of Lienz (Aguntum), it crosses towns and forests of Carnia, places that enchant tourists thanks to their richness in history, traditions and unspoilt nature. It is well-known for its Roman settlements, interesting museums, civil and religious architectural buildings and, above all, for the sulphur waters of the Pudia Spring of Arta Terme that, thanks to its peculiar geoclimatic situation, is the ideal destination to spend regenerating holidays characterized by wellbeing, relaxation and spa treatments. Sports enthusiasts will have many opportunities, from the manège to the sports centre with tennis, volleyball and basketball courts, as well as mountain bike trails. In this “Pearl of the Alps” the winter activities range from cross-country skiing to Alpine skiing; at high altitudes ski mountaineering and snowmobile tours will please even the fittest ones. Sauris is an excellent starting point for wonderful hikes and walks towards the shepherd’s huts. A German-speaking community, rich in traditions, legends and gastronomy, Sauris is the homeland of a delicious raw ham. Val del Bût, Valcalda, Val d’Incaroio Valleys DEGANO VALLEY It is the natural passage between Friuli Venezia Giulia and Comelico. Many are the traces of its past: from the Celtic and medieval archaeological finds, brought to light during excavations, to the houses characterised by the typical and elegant stone portals, to St. Mary’s Parish Church of Gorto, which dominates the whole valley. Those who want to discover typical flavours and products will find excellent cheeses and butter. Local handicraft stands out for the manufacture of boiled wool items of clothing. PESARINA VALLEY It is called the Valley of Time due to its production of clocks and is one of the most beautiful in Carnia. Scattered with green forests and fields, it is characterized by villages with houses featuring roofs with tiles of a characteristic green colour, the typical example of spontaneous architecture in the Alps. Nature and traditions are the winning combination that characterizes the valley; hikes of rare beauty allow to reach shepherd’s huts, casere huts, Alpine huts or to go climbing on the “crete” (crags) of the Dolomites of Pesariis. During the winter season you can ski on ski runs (not very hard) in the locality of Pradibosco or on the cross-country ski run of Pian di Casa. VALCALDA Dominated by the massifs of Mount Crostis to the north and Tamai-Arvenis to the south, it is characterised by large fields, fir woods and beech woods and extends crosswise between the Degano and the Val del Bût Valleys. The tourist resort of Ravascletto with Mount Zoncolan is a very important ski area in Friuli Venezia Giulia. In the shops of the valley you can buy beehive products, charcuterie, tasty fresh or mature cheese, smoked ricottas with a very delicate taste. In the workshops, besides the traditional wooden furniture, which is the result of the skills of the local craftsmen, you can also find carved, inlaid and lathed works. VAL D’INCAROJO The valley, furrowed by the course of the Chiarsò stream, is dominated by the Dolomite peaks of Mounts Sernio, Tersadia and Zermula. The origins of this valley are very ancient: many excavation campaigns provide evidence of the fact that this area had been inhabited since ancient times. Prehistoric settlements and the Necropolis of Misincinis (which can be dated back between the 8th and the 1st century B.C.), are a remarkable example. Sports enthusiasts will enjoy many activities: trekking, horse riding and mountain biking across the pastures and the paths of the Via delle Malghe Carniche (Route of Carnia’s Shepherd’s Huts), volleyball, tennis and miniature golf. This valley is extremely rich in traditions, culture and flavours worth discovering. Local handicraft stands out with its shops: furniture, chopping boards and other wooden tools, baskets, panniers, traditional clothes and scarpèts (slippers) are an example of what one can buy.
