quilt!eak SLO Quilters, Inc. Programs Ginnie Murach, Barbara Klaubert, Irene Dailey, Bonnie Williams Whew! The show is over. If you were as inspired as I was, you can't wait to get back into the sewing room. If you are still recovering from the craziness that lead up to the show, this is the perfect time to do something easy . . . like finish up the binding on that SART quilt so you can turn it in at our May meeting. Community Quilts will be the focus of May's program followed by our annual Ice Cream Social. Remember there are no calories in ice cream if it's eaten at a guild meeting. Please, remember your checkbooks. There are still spaces in the Larry LeBrane workshop, but after May's guild meeting I will be opening up the class to nonguild members and I already have a waiting list. This will be a drawing workshop focusing on six fundamental drawing skills. Mr. LeBrane usually teaches this as a six week course. We are getting a special, one-day, power class. The workshop will be on Tuesday, June 11 from 9:30 to 4:30 with a 30 minute lunch break. The supply list is on the SLO Quilters' website on the Programs tab. May 13, 2013 From the Prez . . . Pres. Jody Nelson I was watching the news this last week of the flooding in the Midwest. It made me think about all the workrooms and fabric stashes, quilt stores, sewing machines, beloved books and tools, all being destroyed. Like most of you, I have spent years and countless dollars adding to my sewing room. My machines, Ott lights, cutting table and tools, pattern books, magazine articles, needles and threads, irons and boards, mats and measuring tapes, pins and marking pencils, scissors and design wall, catalogs of my finished quilts, what is left of my great, great Aunt’s quilted pieces that I acquired because I am the first person in three generations who quilts. The list goes on and on. But these things are not important if you survived the flooding, if your family and pets were safe and dry. But still, this art we practice, we love, has become for me so much more than a simple hobby, a way to while away the time. I would be bereft at the loss of all this, what some people would call, stuff. And it saddens me to think of the strong women who will do without an outlet for their creativity until they are able to get back what they have lost. There is not much we can do for them. Maybe send money to help them rebuild their homes and businesses. They will rebuild, restore, replace, and after a time they will begin to create again. For as you and I know, this art begins in the brain and with the eye and comes from the promise that still, after this tragedy, as with others in the past, quilters will survive and document their stories in fabric and thread. And they will come back together in their guilds and friendship groups, to hold each other up, and lend encouragement and put together a show telling their stories. And it will be spectacular! Sue Fiscalini and Paula Jaster with our Opportunity quilt at the Seven Sisters Show 1 SLO Quilters, Inc. May 13, 2013 have had a number of generous book and video donations made this quarter from members Susan Knowles and Marianna Bissell, and from guest speaker Lura Schwarz-Smith. As motivation to expand your quilting horizons and explore the resources our guild has to offer, we will be introducing this year’s Library Challenge at the May meeting. Stay tuned for details… Additionally, we are always looking to expand the library material. If you have book or video/DVD recommendations which you feel fellow members would benefit, please let us know. Happy May Birthdays Membership Julie Towery Please do NOT bring renewals to the May meeting. You can download the renewal form from the guild website, and then mail it to the Post office box. If you want, I will give you a stamp at the June meeting if you have sent in your renewal before the meeting. 1 - Joyce Moffett 21 - Norma Jones 25 - Ginnie Murach 26 - Collette Blair 27 - Sevilla Priddy 30 - Irene Dailey Experience! Block of the Month Lori Gill and Dede Leece As we move into May we build a stronger pallet. So pucker up or squint your face a little and make something "tart or sour" So this is a time to let the lemons shine! 2 SLO Quilters, Inc. Wordsmith/AQS Ultimate Guild Challenge Update Lindy Sullivan The results of all your hard work scoring quilts at our April meeting are in! Thank you all for participating. It’s difficult to critique other’s quilts – it’s far more pleasant to just admire them. But when I stop to really look at how quilts are put together, I always learn a lot. I hope you enjoyed the chance to really examine the details of the construction and artistry of the thirteen challenge quilts. We voted to announce the eight quilts we’ve chosen to represent us at the AQS Ultimate Guild Challenge at Seven Sisters. However the design committee was unable to hang our quilts together. We didn’t want everyone to have to seek out all the quilts in all their different locations to discover which eight were chosen so we’ve gone ahead with the announcement. Each and every participant should be proud of the beautiful quilt she created: any eight of the quilts would have made our guild proud. However, based on the scoring the eight selected to represent our guild are: Sue Barker, Nevermore Janis Benedict, Wanderlust Edie Clark, Color is the Quilter’s Wordsmith Signe James, Weaving the Words Val Lund, Snail Trail Smitty Price, A Mother’s Roots Mary Ann Reed, Genesis Lindy Sullivan, Illuminating Words May 13, 2013 into the Grand Rapids show at the end of June. If so, we’ll need to mail our quilts off in mid July. And should you want to attend the show, it will be August 14-17. Winners are generally announced the first day of the show. Many people devoted many hours to make sure our challenge was success: Signe James and Smitty Price, who attended every single meeting and work party, Sue Barker came up with three possible themes and the first outlines of the challenge, and Sue, Jan Osterman and Janis Benedict helped finalize the theme, requirements, and they found the beautiful challenge fabric at Betty’s. The entire staff at Betty’s was wonderful, providing meeting space and making sure we had access to the challenge fabric during the months we were working on the quilts. Terry Hopkins gave a Sunday to help us photograph the quilts and get them ready for the display at our meeting. Suzanne Heitzman took photos of the quilts, and Barbara and Dieter Klaubert and Ginnie Murach helped out on short notice with extra photos. Jill Sabol, Barbara McPherson, Robbie Bos, Elaine Paulson, Barbara Klaubert and Ginnie Murach all came to the meeting early to set the quilts up and prepare for the meeting, and Jill also helped take the display down again. Sue Tonik and Judi Carlyle spent an entire evening helping us tally the scores – with so many participating, that turned out to be quite a task! Many, many thanks to all of you, and my apologies and thanks to those of you whose names I’ve forgotten. Finally, thank you to the twelve brave souls who worked long and hard to create beautiful quilts for our challenge. What’s next? Our AQS application and photographs of the quilts will go into the mail (See photos on pages 5 and 6) soon. We’ll hear if we’re accepted International Quilt Festival/Long Beach August 2-4, 2013 Preview Aug. 1 Long Beach Conv. Ctr. We are looking for workers to help hang the special exhibit quilts before Festival, guardians to watch over the quilts during Festival, door persons to take tickets, and workers to help with takedown of special exhibit quilts after the show is closed. These are paid positions ($8 an hour), plus parking (up to $10) and free entry each day you work ($10 value). Those interested should send their address and phone numbers along with the show(s) you are interested in working. I will contact them for that show when the time comes.
