The fourth of July is a day that we celebrate the independence of our country, the United States of America. People celebrate
with family-and-friend gatherings, barbecues, parties, games, food, fun, festivals, parades, musical events and fireworks. But it
is important not to forget the true meaning of the day.

So many take the freedom and liberty they are granted here in the United States of America for granted and forget the true
meaning of the day. We may dress up in our nation's colors of red, white and blue, but do we know the true meaning behind our
flag?
The Fourth of July is a time to commemorate America's declaration of separation from Great Britain in 1776. Our forefathers’ will
and determination forged our freedom and created our democracy.

Even this did not come without debate among the most enlightened thinkers of the time. The legal separation of the American
colonies from Great Britain occurred on July 2, 1776, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of
independence that had been proposed in June by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia. After voting for independence, Congress
turned its attention to the Declaration of Independence, a statement explaining this decision, which had been prepared by a
Committee of Five, with Thomas Jefferson as its principal author. Congress debated and revised the Declaration, not approving
it until July 4.
In celebration of our independence it is nice to be able to share some inspiring quotes to both remember and rekindle our patriotism.

Cow Chips and Cabbage Patches…
Summer is here! We are getting ready for the 1st annual Cow Chip Derby
scheduled for September 13th at the Cabbage Patch to benefit Camp Boggy Creek. Tickets are $5 each and we need the entire chapter to
get behind this event. More info will be available on the website and in the Newsletter. On another development, the chapter is looking into
setting up a concealed weapons training class, which allows you to apply for a Florida Concealed weapon permit. The Florida Gun Exchange in Ormond holds classroom portion on Wednesday nights or Saturday mornings. Cost will the two-hour classroom session is $50
and $10 for the range. The range portion will be at the Volusia gun range on SR 44 west of Tomoka Road on Saturdays only. I’ve been
contacted by three members so far; if interested please let me know by email and I will provide the details. And it’s not too early to start
thinking about the October Camp Boggy Creek Charity Ride, this year celebrating Bruce Rossmeyer’s 20th anniversary. I will be setting up
early registration and collecting ride fees over the next several months ($50 total per person/rider). If you so desire, I will be collecting any
portion of the fee, until October 1st.
We have many rides scheduled in July — OB’s, HOG Dog Stand, Oceanside, Peppers, PitMaster’s BBQ, Saints & Sinners and several
others, check your Daytona Hog Calendar for details of rides and remember to bring you Ride and Have Fun Book to earn extra HOG
bucks.

The Birds in Indiana Are Blind…
Last year around this time Bill and I decided to take a ride to Madison, Indiana. The
route we took was US 50 to IN56 to Madison. We were west of Vevay, Indiana when a bird, chasing his meal, hit us smack on the windshield. Needless to say, the bug got away to become a meal another day. The bird went to “bird heaven.”
On June 3rd of this year, we took the same trip to Madison. We made it to
Madison unscathed; however, on the return trip a bird hit us again! We were
just east of Florence, Indiana. This time the bird got stuck in between the
windshield and the front fork. We were looking for a place to pull over in
order to give the bird a proper sending to his next life, but he gradually fell
out before we found a place to stop.
We just wanted to warn our friends who ride with or without a windshield that
the birds in Indiana are blind. This may apply to all birds in all states.
You know what they say about a motorcycle being invisible to others on the
road? The birds cannot see us either!
SECRETARY: “STRETCH” SAWICKI
Safety First on the Fourth… With the upcoming holiday weekend of July 4th, I would like to remind all our riders and
passengers of the type drivers we are about to encounter. During this summer holiday, the driving habits of those tucked inside their ‘cages’
changes for the worse. I see it daily now, as the windows are rolled up and the vehicle drivers, with their sunglasses on, air conditioners
going full blast, radio blaring, phone in hand either texting or talking, are oblivious to our presence in the lane next to them.
It is also the time for the Daytona Speedway to get back into full swing for the races of that same week, noting the time trials and qualifying
days, the Friday night ‘FIRECRACKER 250’, and the final race of the weekend, on Saturday night, the ‘COKE 400’ race.
PLEASE . . be very careful in your daily riding and group destinations during this time. I suggest and recommend that each person riding, as
well as any passengers, wear the brightest and most obvious — even obnoxious — colored riding gear available to them. A mesh type
safety vest, lime green OR that fluorescent orange color, as an outer layer would be nice. Even though it may be a bit warm, it would be
better to sweat a bit and ‘BE SEEN’ than to have an incident that may deter you from your destination, or worse.
I see daily the riders that are out there on our highways, not keeping all their lights on, wearing dark or subdued colors that are very hard to
see, and most of all weaving in and out of traffic without proper signaling. I admit, I’m not a perfect rider, either, but some riders are very
blatant in their actions that give reason for those vehicle drivers to look at all of us ‘Bikers’ as a menace to them as they travel on the roads.
So, be alert. Be cautious, Be safe and most of all, Be Seen out there on those roadways.

Calling all Ladies…
We all know that summer in Florida is super hot and humid, which causes many of us to travel
north to visit family and friends or to head out on a new adventure. Even though we are fewer in numbers during this time of yea, the
LOH still meets regularly. To help keep our cool in July we’ll take to the water for a morning of paddle boarding followed by lunch in
August — be on the lookout for emails with complete details on our events.
If you haven’t joined an LOH meeting or a special event you’re missing out — all lady Daytona HOG Chapter members are welcome.
SAFETY OFFICER:
DAN VASSALLO
The Meeting Before the Ride… Why we Stagger
When we take our group rides we always have a pre-ride meeting covering many topics to help ensure your safety and enjoyment. One of the
topics briefly discussed is that we ride in a staggered formation. Here are some excerpts from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation Guide to group
riding that may help newer riders to our group understand why we focus our pre-ride meetings on this riding technique.
When a group is riding in a staggered formation, it takes up less space on the highway than a single-file line, is easier for other motorists to see
and, by protecting its lane, is less likely to be separated by other traffic.
In a staggered formation, the leader rides in the left third of the lane, while the next rider stays at least one second behind in the right third of the
land. The rest of the group follows this pattern.
The staggered formation allows riders to maintain an adequate space cushion — providing each rider plenty of room to
maneuver and still maintain formation. On a sunny day on dry
roads, a minimum space cushion is considered to be twoseconds following distance between a rider and the rider
directly in front of them.
In certain situations, the lead road captain may signal the group to ride single-file, which is preferred on narrow or curvy roadways, in poor visibility, entering or leaving
highways or in other situations where more space cushion is required.
Remember, a stagger in your walk probably means you’ve had too much to drink — but staggering on a group ride is one of the keys to safety.
As always, look where you want to go.
Until the next ride…….Dan

LiveWire — Will Batteries Recharge Harley’s Future?
If you ask me, Harley marketing an electric motorcycle makes as much sense as Clorox producing a line of baby food.
If you haven't heard, Harley shocked the word recently by announcing it has created a prototype of an electric motorcycle — called
Project Livewire. It’s sporty and speedy, jumping from zero to 60 in about 4 seconds. It’s smooth. It’s quiet. And it’s ever so
green. How politically correct.
But after 110 years of rumbling and rambling… how many of us who poured our
money and pride into the Harley brand are looking for “smooth, quiet and environmentally friendly?”
We don’t ride Harleys because they’re practical. We don’t ride Harleys because
they’re fuel-efficient. We ride because it’s fun. We ride to make a statement
about who we are and what we stand for. With a range of just 53 miles on a full
charge, the LiveWire motorcycle would be fine for rolling down to the spa for a
facial and a cup of organically grown green tea, it’s not going to get you to Sturgis and certainly can’t get you back from even an afternoon lunch ride unless
you have a really long plug!
Remember, Harley couldn’t make a go of Buell or even the V-Rod, both of which
were largely rejected out of hand as “un-Harley-like” despite their cutting-edge
design and advanced technologies. And the Motor Company spent years trying
to figure out how to water-cool its touring bikes, carefully hiding anything that
looked less than classic — even avoiding the word “water” in the contrived marketing expression “dual-cooled.”
If you want comfort, convenience, reliability, safety and fuel-efficiency, buy a Toyota Prius — and compared to a new Ultra Limited you’ll also save yourself a few bucks.
But motorcycles aren’t about any of those things.
The electric motorcycle is actually nothing new. In the mid 1970s, Harley collaborated
with a third party to strap four lead-acid batteries to a Sportster frame and created a
crude electric two-wheeler.
That cycle, known as the Transitron
MKII and its plans are on display at the
Wheels Through Time museum in
Maggie Valley, North Carolina. The
project was so short-lived that you’ll
need to dig deep into the Google
searches to find any mention.
And like so many parties, Harley is late to the door. A company called Zero has been marketing a line of electric motorcycles for years — and a while back during a Bike
Week demo I found that they were very quick and nimble, but so limited in range as to be virtually useless for their rather high price. They were great at what they did, but
what they did simply wasn’t satisfying or helpful.
Harley says it is uncertain about whether Project LiveWire will ever result in a commercial product. But it has a fleet of the battery powered motorcycles that it’ll be carting
across the country to see what bikers think of the idea. The fact of the matter is
that through the years Harley has gone a long way refining what is essentially a
single idea. And there’s nothing wrong with that — be really good at one thing —
it’s a noble calling. While they’d like to appeal to new markets and new riders, they
simply haven’t been able to find a way to extend the new formula.
Perhaps Clorox baby food would be a big hit. But….
My opinion? LiveWire is DOA. This is the New Coke. Pull the plug.
Until next time, Ride Easy.

ASK —
Sharpening Your Skills
By John DeVito
A recent parking lot practice provided an interesting twist. While Roger and Dan worked with the twowheel motorcycles I took our three-wheel riders off to the side for a special set of drills.
I brought my MSF 3WBRC books with me. We started by going over the exercises done in the threewheel class. “Z” man said he planned on riding the Dragon and the Cherohala later this year. While
reviewing my books he pointed to a cornering exercise, suggesting “that looks interesting”.
Off we went to another parking lot and began to ride it, both left and right. Bill and Cindy joined, and ode the exercise two-up. I’m not going to say I taught these experienced riders anything new, but they were reminded of the finer points that they may have forgotten. In addition they realized they had picked up a few bad habits that
needed attention. I do believe all had a good time.
A few years ago several members, like “Z” man, were planning on riding the mountains.
They requested exercises that would prepare them for the twisties. We were up to the challenge and with a little research we found just the ticket in the ERC and ARC
classes. It took some work to set them up but we did. We were later told the preparation helped our members have a fun and safe ride. If you have and thing you
would like to work on, just ASK — that’s why they call it practice.
On a different note the MSF is changing the Basic Riding Course. Gone is the video, replaced with a power point presentation. The riders classroom book has also
been updated. Later this year they will change the riding exercises. They have updated quite a bit including points on group riding. With all our group rides (and new
members) I thought this would be a good time to review some group riding tips, as per the MSF.
1) Arrive ready with plenty of gasoline and check with the group leader about the details of the ride.
2) Learn common group riding signals.
3) Use a staggered formation unless there in a need for single file riding.
4) Avoid side by side riding as the time and space safety margin is reduced.
5) Use a single file formation with at least a 2 second following distance for curves and other situations that require more maneuvering room and an increased safety margin, like poor surface conditions or limited visibility conditions.
6) Avoid engine braking, and use the brake light whenever slowing.
7) Check rider ahead and behind often.
8) Avoid target fixation (looking in one spot or more than a second), especially on other riders you are with, so you can keep and active visual search pattern.
9) When you pass do so as an individual rider.
10) If you get separated from the group, ride your own ride to the next pre-determined stop.
11) Be predictable, and follow group protocol as long as it’s a safe ride.
Our Road Captains do a great job, everything from the pre ride meeting to parking at the ride’s end.
I hope to see you at the next group ride, as always please ride safe.

As for the June meeting and the next fund raising event, well, I’ll let Dave handle all that bull crap, er, I mean the details, as I wouldn’t want to accidentally step in
it. Instead, I’ll concentrate on keeping all those minutes, documents and other pertinent chapter paperwork in order. All I know is this will be a unique event and
with all of us participating we’ll raise a lot of money for the kids at Camp Boggy Creek.
So much for chapter business, now let’s get personal...
The June newsletter article I wrote shared the trials and tribulations I was having in getting a 1918 Edison Upright Victrola restored and refinished . . Well, I finally
did it!! Actually, WE did it!!
Mrs. Stretch and I were searching high & low for that speaker grill material and found it on some forgotten, back shelf over in the ‘Joann’s’ store on ISB. It was
kind of a really light brown colored material that was sheer and had a nice old style lace pattern that we felt was suited for the time period of the Victrola.
Enough material was purchased, and, as we found out, the cost was ‘today’s prices on yesterday’s goods’. But, with all the effort we made in the restoration, this
was a proverbial ‘drop-in-the-bucket’ in finishing this magnificent piece of history. The 1918 Edison Victrola, fully restored including all 76 records, now sits
proudly in our dining room.
Well, in closing, I think it’s really time to ‘RIDE and have FUN’ ! ! !
Quote for July: “There’s a fine line between cuddling and holding someone down so they cannot get away”
Stretch
Editor’s Note: The following poem was penned by “Wolf” Tompkins. Thanks for sharing this with us!
SNOWBIRDS
We all love the snowbirds, but they come and they go.
I understand it has something to do with snow. I don’t know.
They come in the winter, and yes they do swarm.
They spend half their time here because it’s suppose to be warm.
But sometimes it’s cold, and that’s a shame, but it’s warmer down here and they’re still glad them came.
Most leave in the spring because they think it will get hot, but if you like warm weather, then it’s really not.
They like to walk and they like to bike, they do all the outdoor activities that they really like.
The change of scenery is always a treat, they come down in droves and like to eat. They fill our restaurants and malls for sure, and if it’s to cold, they just eat and
shop some more.
Some like to read, some like to bead, some like to sew or go to a show, but all I know is “we’re sad to see you go”.
Some go back to family and some to friends; while others have no reasons, although some say they just like the change of seasons.
Once you’re here long enough you’ll get to know, we have all the seasons, but just not the snow.
The restaurants, the beaches, the pool and the mall, will be seemingly empty until they return in the fall.
Until you return we bid you adieu, we won’t miss you all, but there will be a few.

New Orleans or Bust!!
The overnight Harley ride to New Orleans was the victim of circumstances.
After a string of sunny and warm days, Monsoon season quickly hit and but for the craziest among us, there were very few willing to mount up on two wheels for the long
trek to New Orleans. In fact, only four bikers gathered at the appointed time and place to begin the journey. Four Daytona HOG members — Linda and Don on BMWs,
Jeff on a scooter then there was the lone wolf, Bill Lawrence — thankfully — on a Harley!!!
As it turns out Jeff and Bill were just there for a day-trip, primarily to lend moral support to Don and Linda, who after 10 miles on the BMWs were already complaining about
the lack of creature comforts. Don and Linda’s
plan was to meet up with other HOG members
who decided to ditch the bikes and four-wheel it
to the Big Easy.
There was plenty of rain enroute, but the extended weekend in the French Quarter was a blast.
A tip of the hat to all the trip planners and those
who made the journey!
Remember there’s always an over-nighter in the
works… scan the Activities page for the next
adventure and if you have a destination for a
longer ride, drop a line to Betsy Morrison!!
Down the Stream Without a Paddle
This is the only known photo in existence documenting
the overnighter to Ichnetucknee Springs.
We were going to caption this picture “The Survivors”
after they successfully navigated their way down a raging river, better known by most as a meandering stream.
Either that or it’s a picture of the rejects from the casting call for the remake of “Beach Towel Bingo!” — we’re
not quite sure.
Editor’s note: Thanks to Mike Piers for leading the ride
and Betsy Morrison for organizing logistics.

Getting Inside the Head of a Neurologist
If you ride on some of the weekend HOG rides, or attend the monthly Parking Lot Practice, you have probably met Dalia Fulop. Sometimes she is riding her CVO
Breakout, and other times her TriGlide, depending on whether she has her father, Ovidiu (we call him Ed), with her or not. She's a friendly lady who is fairly new to
motorcycling in general, and Harley-Davidsons in particular.
Dalia grew up and spent most of her life in Edison, New Jersey She split her college time between New Jersey and Romania, and now is a neurologist working
in the Fun Coast area. Dalia trained and focused her residency at the VA Hospital in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, and has also worked at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia. Currently, she is affiliated with Memorial Hospital in Ormond Beach, and Halifax Hospital in Port Orange as well as Halifax's Main hospital in
Daytona Beach. She moved to Ormond Beach in 2006 and lives there with her Pug, Sophie; and Penny, a Mini Schnauzer.
About two years ago, Dalia entered the world of Harley-Davidson when she purchased her first motorcycle, a
brand new Dyna Switchback. After getting to know the ins and outs of riding, she traded the Switchback for a
new 2013 Anniversary Model Heritage Softail Classic. When the Breakout was first introduced, available only
in the CVO version, Dalia jus had to have one. Lucky her! While parking two Softails in the garage would put
me on top of the world, Dalia wanted to bring her father on some rides and both she and Ed felt they'd be more
comfortable together on a trike. So, off goes the Anniversary Model Heritage Softail Classic and in comes a
brand new 2014 TriGlide! She still exercises the CVO Breakout when riding solo, but takes the TriGlide when
doubling up. As of now, Dalia is pretty happy with her stable of bikes. She has no "Dream Bike" in mind. She's
not interested in a custom build. She likes the trike because its easy to handle both in town and on the
road. And of course, it has storage space available when heading out on longer trips.
Dalia became a HOG member back in 2012, when she first purchased the Switchback. She immediately joined
the Daytona Beach HOG Chapter and has been enjoying the overall experience ever since. She likes to go on
rides to different locations and prefers the rides that venture down rural roads with a lot of scenery. As of the
time of this interview, she was planning to go on the overnight ride to Ichetucknee Springs in June — and you’ll
see you in the photo elsewhere in this newsletter. Dalia has been to Daytona Beach HOG's World's Most Famous Christmas Party, been on the Boggy Creek Ride for Children, has volunteered to work the medical tent
for Boggy Creek's bicycle event this September, has been on some of the Primary Rides, and has promised to
volunteer to work the HOG Dog Stand in the future!
Her favorite event so far has been the Christmas Party, but she also enjoys both Bike Week and Biketoberfest. She tends to hang out at Dirty Harry's on Main
Street and visits the Cabbage Patch — but she's yet to enter the Cole Slaw Wrestling Match! Dalia's favorite TV show is like a lot of DBHOG's members, Sons Of
Anarchy. She's also into The Walking Dead, AMC's very popular zombie show. If she goes to a movie theater, she'll be watching an action packed show, or a
good comedy.
A few weeks ago, DBHOG took a ride to the Potato Patch in Deland. Dalia was there with her trike and Ed. The roughly 30 riders that were there celebrated Ed's
82nd birthday and even sang a great version of "Happy Birthday" that I'm sure the restaurant will remember for a long time. Dalia is a nice lady and a good addition to Daytona Beach HOG. Be sure to say "Hi" to her (and maybe Ed, if he's there) at the next meeting.
