Helping Hen
Empowering all kids to become social entrepreneurs
November, 2014
Dear Friends,
One Hen has had a great winter season, filled with teacher trainings, new partnerships, and a trip
to visit our beneficiaries in Ethiopia and Tanzania. In this newsletter, read more about these
activities and learn about the upcoming launch of One Hen’s first-ever Social Entrepreneurship
Summer Camp and our new blog.
In this bulletin, you’ll also learn more about our upcoming Pledge your Profit launch. We’d love
to hear what your students think of this 30-day challenge to raise money for charity – have them
give it a try on their own or as a class and let us know how it goes.
Any stories to share about your One Hen experiences? Lessons learned? Best practices? New
resources? As always, we’d love to hear about you and your students’ One Hen experiences.
Please share your stories. Email us at letters@onehen.org at any time!

Ethiopian Youth Learn to Support One
Another through Savings and
Entrepreneurship
Before joining the Self Help Group I never
realized that people my age could engage
in savings. In the past, I just used my
spending money for useless thing. But
now I have some money saved.”
~ Participant in One Hen’s self help youth
group in Nazareth, Ethiopia
Thanks to One Hen’s curriculum and
mobile app, kids around the world are learning how they can
earn and save money to improve their lives and help people
in need. Last year, One Hen combined its youth curriculum
with a microfinance approach and put this content on a
mobile app, making it easy to use in remote setting where
classrooms, workbooks, and teachers may not be readily
available. We then implemented a pilot project, where 120
Ethiopian youth used the app to form six self help groups.
Guided by the app and a local facilitator, the youth then
pooled their savings and distributed small loans to support
one another in coping with family death and illnesses,
celebrating personal achievements, and starting small
business ventures.
During a site visit to Nazareth, Ethiopia last month, the One
Hen team had an opportunity to meet dozens of these pilot
group participants and learn from their inspiring stories. In
2015, One Hen will use this input and feedback to support
the groups’ sustainability and expand use of the mobile app
to 1,000 young people in Tanzania and Ethiopia.
Pledge Your Profit: Youth Campaign Teaches Research and Business
Skills
The Pledge Your Profit campaign challenges youth to spend 30 days raising
money to help people in need. In collaboration with Girl Rising’s media
campaign, participating kids have started a variety of small business ventures
and used One Hen’s online resources to determine their product pricing,
target customers, marketing strategies, sales venues, and profit-earning
potential. Encourage youth to learn more about research, product testing, and
social entrepreneurship by participating in the PYP pilot. Click here to get
started!
Kids for Kids Webpage: Something for Everyone
One Hen’s website engages youth in interactive and
educational games, stories, videos and campaigns.
Funded by Blackstone Charitable Foundation, our
newly designed Kids for Kids webpages include 5
colorful, interactive layers of content – each
designed for different personality and learner types.
For the Movie-Lovers there are 6 inspiring
videos of young entrepreneurs.
For the Gamers there are 5 online games
that kids can play to earn money for people in
need.
For the Academics there are pages and videos describing microfinance and social
entrepreneurship.
For the Competitors there is the Pledge your Profit campaign that challenges kids to
spend 30 days raising money for charity.
For the Readers there are numerous entrepreneur success stories from around the
world.
No internet access in your class? No problem. The Kids for Kids content can be printed and the
videos can be downloaded before class. Encourage your students to contribute to these pages
with their own content. Send us a video with their entrepreneurial story or a ‘how to’ to make their
business products. We welcome the contributions.
Technology for Development: Shifting the Status Quo in Africa
Check out this recent Huffington Post article, coauthored One Hen’s own Courtenay Cabot

how our innovative collaboration with Tearfund is
democratizing tools for community empowerment and lifting
families out of poverty.
One Hen Welcomes Youth to Wheelock College for a Fun and Active
Summer Camp Experience
Are you in the Boston area? Is your youngster eager to earn
money or help others? This summer, One Hen’s first-ever
Social Entrepreneurship Camp will challenge middle
school students to design businesses that earn money for
themselves and to help people in need. From July 13-17,
students will meet on the Wheelock College campus and
work in teams to brainstorm business ideas, develop
product plans, establish marketing strategies, research
social needs, and select charities to support with their
business profits. Campers will also participate in site visits to
successful businesses and charitable organizations. Give your child the business skills, social
consciousness, and confidence to become a change agents in their communities and around the
world. Sign up before the program fills and spread the word to others.
