A cluster of mid-rise towers containing houses and office spaces, this project looms over Corso Italia with a commanding street presence. The form and façade both exhibit careful detailing in the form of subtle inflections. It is located on one of the main streets in the centre of Milan. It is built on a difficult to infill site; an irregular block in a dense urban context. The design successfully combines the complex program of housing, ground floor commercial use, parking space and offices. The 5 building parts are arranged in such a way that together they define several public and private courtyards and streets. . Project is not public! . La Rinascente Milan Address Via Santa Radegonda 3 20121 Milan Italy . The redesign of La Rinascente's exterior by Cibic and Partners was aimed at both restoring the department store's famous portico and reinforcing the Rinascente brand (Italy's largest department store) with a modern, recognizable image. As La Rinascente puts it, 'shopping requires inspiration'. The designers copied the shape of the existing portico arches for the new shop windows, while making the new entrance hall rectangular, contrasting with the old structure and emphasizing the new symmetrical axis they had introduced. The large, well-lit display windows form a new theatrical decor in the portico. This ambience has been extended around the corner by introducing a five-metre-high glass wall, backlit by a network of LED lighting that creates a continuous pattern which can be reconfigured to suit the season or special events. In the end, not only the store but also fashion capital Milan will profit from this sophisticated shop window. . New Trade Fair Address Strada Statale 33 del Sempione 28 20017 Milan Italy http://www.fieramilano.it . The New Trade Fair is not only a big project for the Milan region its dimensions make it one of the biggest buildings in Europe. Massimiliano Fuksas conceived the site on the outskirts of the city as a new landscape with its own geography. The project is structured by a central axis that connects the service centres, offices and the exhibition halls. The whole complex is covered by a vast roof - an undulating lightweight structure, with a surface area exceeding 46.000 square metres, over 1300 metres long and approximately 32 metres wide. Made up of a reticular rhomboidal mesh structure in prefinished steel profiles, it is connected via spherical nodes and covered with laminated glass attached via plates to the profiles below. It is supported by 183 steel columns 500 mm. in diameter which branch into smaller supporting arms above 12 metres. Fuksas derived the form from constant altimetric variations as found in the natural landscape in the form of 'craters', 'waves' and 'dunes'. . Project is public! . ADR18 apartments Address Via Andreoli 18 20158 Milan Italy . This project consists out of transformation of a laboratory into a residential block with 8 apartments. The design started with a simple block and a new floor was added. By making a non-symmetrical scheme of apparently casually placed windows with strongly accentuated voluminous frames, a dynamic effect was created in the façade. . photo: Chiara Pranzo-Zaccaria Project is not public! . . . . . . Milan's Luigi Bocconi Free University dates back from 1902 and has grown in the past 100 years from a privately funded institution to an international university for business, economics and law. Because the campus kept growing over the decades, it now comprises an entire neighbourhood within a residential and commercial district, and new facilities had to be built. In this new building, new conference and lecture rooms can be found, as well as a 1000-seat aula and research offices for 1000 professors and postgraduate students. photo: Beatriz W. Fideles . Casa Rustici Address Corso Sempione 36 20154 Milan Italy . This housing complex in Milan was built by famous fascist architect Giuseppe Terragni. He was important for the development of livable and cheap housing in 1930s Italy. Casa Rustica is located on Corso Sempione, an inportant thoroughfare to get into Milan's city centre. It has got a rooftop garden, to be used by all the building's occupants. . photo: Marloes Faber Project is not public! . Palazzo Montecatini Address Via della Moscova 3 20121 Milan Italy . Commissioned to Gio Ponti between 1935 and 1938, this building soon became a symbol of rationalist Milan architecture between the two wars. In the shape of an H with a private opening onto Via della Moscova on one floor, it is ideal for offices with its internal layout, furnishings and external aspect working together in perfect harmony. Externally, the green marble walls and the standardized iron and aluminium locks annonce the expressive clarity and attention to detail that can also be seen on the inside. The complex offers avant-garde, typological solutions (mobile floors with individual work posts) as well as technological ones (controlled heating and inflatable posts), which Ponti took care of paying great attention to detail (from website Yahoo! Travel). photo: Marloes Faber . Project is not public! . Completion 1-1938 Architect Gio Ponti Contributed by Marloes_Faber . . . Opening hours . Duca di Milano Hotel Address Piazza della Repubblica 13 20124 Milan Italy . Designed by postmodernist Aldo Rossi, the Duca di Milano Hotel operates as an annex of the Principe di Savoia Hotel, with which it is linked by a skybridge. The façade of Rossi's hotel is made up of red brick and has a linear pattern of windows on a plain surface. This stands in stark contrast to its mother building, which has a traditional façade with an abundance of ornaments. The interior of the Duca di Milano is more confluent with the Principe's style: the units in the annex are ablaze with regal red fabrics, padded walls, valanced windows, sitting areas, and generous desks that match the Edwardian look of the antique dressers. . Gallaratese II Housing Address Via Enrico Falck 37 Milan Italy . Located in the city of Milan, the Gallaratese II housing complex has the capacity to house 2400 inhabitants. Aldo Rossi designed the complex at the 'Gallaratese Quarter II' to be a self-contained village which was even dubbed a 'Palais social' by its tenants. This coordinates with Rossi’s philosophy of architecture. His view that the primary sources of all architectural content lie in the school, the hospital and the prison is reflected in the use of primary forms, axial orientation and repetitive elements in the façades. Gallaratese II is designed with two apparent axes: north-south and east-west. These indicate the primary circulation routes of the building as well as guiding the relationships between the building and the rest of the quarter (from website University of Colorado Denver). photo: Marloes Faber . Velasca Tower Address Piazza Velasca 1 20122 Milan Italy . Close to Milan's city centre, looking up, one can notice the presence of an outstanding profile: it is the outline of Torre Velasca, whose symbolic value one is able to guess from a distance. The building was designed in the 1950s by a group of Milanese architects called BBPR after their names: Banfi, Belgiojoso, Peressutti and Rogers. The Velasca Tower belongs to the first generation of Italian modern architecture, nevertheless keeping itself linked to the Milanese context in which it was born, and relating itself particularly to the cathedral, the city's bell towers and above all to the Sforzesco Castle. The tower, with its characteristic 'mushroom' shape and height of 99 metres, sticks out into the city centre skyline, made up of buildings, domes, towers and bell towers. Its structure recalls the Lombard tradition of the massive profile of towers and medieval fortresses. photo: Benjo Zwarteveen . Project is not public! . Pirelli tower Address Piazza Duca d'Aosta 3 20124 Milan Italy http://www.pirelli.com . In 1950 Alberto Pirelli, the president of the Pirelli Company, required that a skyscraper be built in the original area where the first factory was constructed in the 19th century. The project was developed by architect Gio Ponti, with the assistance of Pier Luigi Nervi and Arturo Danusso. At 127.1 meters (417 feet), it is the tallest building in the city and was built of concrete (est. 60,000 tons). Construction of the tower began in 1956 in a time that Italy was experiencing an economic boom. The tower was to be surrounded by low lying buildings on a hectagonal plot of land. Upon its completion in 1958, it became one of the symbols of Milan and of the national economical recovery. The building was later sold to the Lombardy region, of which is now the head office. Characterized by a bold, structural skeleton, smooth refined curtain wall façades, and tapered sides like the bow of a ship, it was among the first skyscrapers to abandon the customary block form. . Value Partners Headquarters Address Via Vespri Siciliani 9 20146 Milan Italy . The buildings for the Value Partners Headquarters in Milan, having pure geometrical shapes, are physically separated but functionally interconnected by footbridges and by a little structure between them, housing the reception. The façades have different characteristics: the ones facing the street appear architecturally abstract and rigorous, with a base made in steel, defining a typically urban style. The internal parts were made by a composition of steel and glass, to allow a better view on the roof gardens of the lowers buildings. The façades at the back, in wood and steel, are related in style, modules, and position. The presence of green areas is visible from everywhere in the building, and in the tallest building there is a green vertical structure of 20 metres in height. It's a way to obtain green surface and a relationship with nature in a high-density building area. photo: Eugenia Silvestri . Project is not public! . . . . . . SS. Giovanni e Paolo Church Address Via Privata Catone 10 20158 Milan Italy . This ecclesiastical complex, designed by Italian architects Luigi Figini and Gino Pollini, occupies a trapezoidal plot on the northern periphery of Milan. The church and adjoining youth centre have a very irregular form, since the perimeter consists of a constant pattern of advances and regressions, making for broken sight lines and a continuous play between outside and inside (text from LombardiaBeniCulturali). . photo: Federico Curiél Project is public! . ERA3 Address Via Privata Eraclito 3 20128 Milan Italy . From the ashes of an industrial building arises a new residential complex of 25 apartments. The intervention area is situated in the northern outskirts of Milan, near Sesto San Giovanni and Viale Monza, one of the major radial avenues of the city. The lot is rectangular in shape (27x40 m) and faces Eraclito Street along its short side. The new building completes the urban landscape by connecting the façades and covering the blind walls of the adjacent constructions. According to the height range of the surrounding buildings, ERA3 has five to seven storeys. The basement and mezzanine host parking lots. The building is a manifesto of the complexity in contemporary architecture. The volumetric composition shows a sequence of additions and subtractions. A wide range of materials like plaster, zinc, wood, concrete, steel, glass and stones are combined to underline the arrangement of the volumes and surfaces. photo: LPzR architetti . S9 Housing Address Via Sile 9 20139 Milan Italy . The S9 building is the refurbishment of an old warehouse and workshop. The project included the addition of a new floor and a detached balcony with a steel and wood structure. It is a sort of contemporary rendering of a 'casa di ringhiera' (literally: 'banisters house'), a typical housing type in Italian towns, mostly in the Northern part of the country. Breath Building Geox tower Address via speronari 8 20100 Milan Italy . The building is a renovation of a pre-existing building in Torino Street, one of the most important Milanese axes. Due to the impossibility to renovate the façade "in style", the studio decided to build a very recognizable landmark without overbearing the context. Only the structural frame has been maintained. The new facade is composed by a metal frame that supports windows and opaque surfaces. The second transpiring skin is composed by perforated plates: it's heat exchanger, solar filter and optical corrector. The necessity to solve the problem of congestion and cement jungle has inspired autumnal colour of the skin. The corner of the building hosts contemporary artwork that will change periodically. . The headquarters for the D&G brand, right in the middle of Milan and designed by the Milan architecture studio Piuarch, combines, links and internally reorganizes two factory blocks. Synergy between the classic and the contemporary is one of the core features of this design, which sets the early 20th century block with its historic frontage off against the 1960s structure, now new-built in glass. This glazed façade is one of the works most characteristic features, running unbroken around three sides of the whole building so as to provide total illumination inside at any time of day and stunning visual impact. The link between the two buildings, moderating their different natures with its own rigour, is provided by the new full-height connection with its staircase ramps in unpolished metal plate. The basement is reinforced by the "piercing" action of a continuous reflecting shelter, emphasizing the dynamic perception of the outline and the external space, whereas the foyer system defines the "threshold" between external-public space and internal-private space. Andrea Tognon Architecture Atelier Address Via Pericle 14 20126 Milan Italy http://www.atognon.com . This is the new atelier space of Andrea Tognon Architecture in Milan. The design approach is a real work in progress. First the architects observed the spaces and worked in them before we actually decided any interventions. The spaces in the office PALAZZINA were quite banal. They started to play with the existing and underlying volumes and spaces only through colour and began from a gray base colour adding different pigments for each room, defining imperceptible sequences of spaces. We played with existing neon lights revisiting them just with colour tape to warm up the light and give it emotional value. Then we unified different buildings through applying black colour, with which we turned outside spaces to spaces with interior feeling. The project is a work in progress, an occasion to experiment with ideas of simplicity but with a strong spatial and emotional impact. photo: Andrea Tognon . Project is not public! . Podcetrtek Sports Hall Address Zdraviliska cesta 23 3254 Podcetrtek Slovenia . The municipal sports hall is located at the main road to small town Podcetrtek. Although primarily designed for sports activities, the hall represents also the single large community indoor venue for cultural and other events. It is this dual role that lead to the specific design of the facility. Its primary design element is a "red carpet" spatially designed path, bounded by the dyke on one side and incised into the building on the other. It is benefiting from the spatial anomaly and the dyke, thus shielding the entrance from the direct influence of the road. Presented in vivid colours and attractive shapes it widens in front of the entrance to form a quality - almost square like area. The festivity of the access is in the evenings highlighted by a light ornament on the façade. photo: Miran Kambic . Public access unknown! . . . . . . Gruskovje Border Shop Address Stanosina 1B 2286 Gruskovje Slovenia . Gruskovje border shop is situated between two border controls, on the border crossing between Slovenia and Croatia in a narrow space between two roads. Simple building with two levels is planned as a longitudinal volume, with the main entrance for visitors placed in one of the smaller sides and the service entrance for deliveries and staff on the opposite side. Both entrances are funnel-shaped and are slightly pushed into the interior. The two long sides are solid and are, like the roof, wrapped in metal sheets. In response to the dynamic environment, and with a simple design technique, the basic volume of the shop is distorted and twisted around the longitudinal axis. The resulting appearance is more expressive and is, through much needed greater visibility, serving to facilitate easier spatial orientation of the passers-by. Deformation of the volume gives the impression that the building is somehow "frozen" in motion. photo: Miran Kambic . Project is public! . . . . . La Serenissima Office Building Address Via Filippo Turati 25-27 20122 Milan Italy . This building, located in the heart of Milan, was designed in the 60's by Ermenegildo e Eugenio Soncini for the company Campari. It's a one of series of constructions, that in the years of the economic boom, become representative of the new communicative power of the Italian industry. The building is distinguished by the burnished colour finish of the metal structures on the facade, the tinted glass of the curtain wall system, the brown paintwork and the smaller volume used as a residential unit. During its heyday, the building would have been considered modern and technologically advanced. However, in its contemporary condition, many of its undeniably fascinating aspects have proved to be uneconomical particularly in terms of energy saving. The new owner has decided to redesign the building respecting the original layout. The design choice has been to recuperate the ground floor and to reassign its generous amount of unused space to commerce (although part of the central green area. photo: Park Associati . The design started with several workshops involving very different subjects like musicians, artists, economists, designers, brainstorming together. Our office worked to synthesize those several inputs in a real architectural space. The project we are presenting now is one episode of this exciting collaboration with the Max Mara group and his 'in house' architecture department who assisted us along all the design and construction phases. A Charming Interplay Of Reflections . Address Via Alemagna 12 20121 Milan Italy http://www.triennale.org . The exhibition project originates from the client's specific requirement of creating an exhibition path beginning from water-reactive materials, constituting the past, the present and the future of the company. Key materials, such as soda and bicarbonate, both representing the company's memory through its first one hundred years of history, are characterized by the fact that, when coming into contact with water, they react releasing a sequence of bubbles that appear on surface. From this particular phenomenon arose the intention to create an imaginary space reproducing the idea of a big water container, streaked with a series of bubbles rising gradually from the bottom straight upwards. This fictional landscape is created through a set of acrylic opaline discs, suspended in midair and set out along a progression thinning out upwards. The whole lends the entire structure a strong dynamism, establishing at the same time a firm connection with lights photo: Enza Tamborra . Project is public! . . . . . Library Collegio San Carlo Address Corso Magenta 71 20123 Milan Italy . In 2005 Fondazione Collegio San Carlo assigned the design of the restoration of the 16th and 18th century's parts of the library of Collegio San Carlo to the Ragazzi and Partners studio and later on, in 2007, the interior and furniture design and layout of the new library. The restoration of the library dealt with the 16th century's loggia through the elimination of the masonry plugging realized together with the addition of the second floor and of the altana. In order to insure the strength of the loggia, some steel structural elements have been inserted in the windows design in the middle of the colonnade, made of serizzo stone, of Doric order with Attic base. Furthermore, the restoration of the loggia revealed the original material and form layout of the cross-vaults that have been emphasized through a Led illumination system hidden on the top of the vaults' tie beams. On the walls of the loggia some graphic findings probably dated from the 16th century. photo: Guido Clerici . Project is public! . Internazionale, together with the Municipality of Milan, are carrying out with the aim of transforming San Siro stadium in a multifunctional facility capable of hosting all the important events that Milano will face during the upcoming EXPO 2015. Following the success of the skybox project, Ragazzi & Partners has carried out the idea of creating a new concept of hospitality spaces on top of the main grand stand of San Siro Stadium for sponsors to enjoy the events in a very special and comfortable location. The project will be developed in two stages: the first phase, completed in 2012, has created 6 new lounges on top of the corner of the red ring. With a very flexible layout the new rooms varies in size and they can be used separately or attached together, with integrated section doors, in order to respond to special needs. photo: Fantoni Spa .
