Free travel on new ferry service:
ST GEORGE’S, Grenada, Wednesday September 8, 2010 – Several
people will be able to travel free of cost, including the physically challenged,
when the Caribbean’s new ferry service is launched by BEDY’s Travel of
Grenada next month. The ferry service, when operational, will connect
Barbados, St Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada and St Vincent, providing
daily services to those islands.
BEDY’s Chief Executive Officer Benjamin Ross promised that on each trip, 12
free seats will be allocated for the physically handicapped, persons requiring
urgent medical attention, representatives of government travelling on
government business, members of the clergy, persons travelling on special
education assignments, as well as police officers. Ross said that would be in
keeping with the agency’s Special Situation Seat Assignment Programme. In
giving an update on the launch of the ferry service, Ross said most of the pre-launch plans have been fine-tuned and by the end of this
month, a comprehensive booking system will be in place at locations across the region.
Those persons living in the United States will also
be able to make their inter-island travel reservations and cargo bookings through BEDY’s Miami office.
Three vessels – one with a capacity for some 900 passengers, 180 motor vehicles and cargo, and two others, La Palma Express and Nutmeg
Express, with a capacity of 260 and 300 respectively – will be utilised. The smaller vessels will provide inter-island tour and charter services.
Ross said the schedule for the larger vessel is being revised. No exact date has been given for the launch of the ferry service, but BEDY said

Dr Cyrus receives
“Graduate of the Year”
from Queen’s
University Belfast
08 July 2010: Belfast, NORTHERN IRELAND:
Retired Vincentian surgeon and former
Deputy Governor General of St. Vincent and
the Grenadines, Dr Cecil Cyrus has been
awarded the coveted “Graduate of the
Year” from Queen’s University Belfast.
The Graduate of the Year Award is made by
Queen’s Graduates’ Association with the
generous support from First Trust Bank.
Left to Right: Oonagh Ferrity - Queen’s Graduate Association, Dr Cecil Cyrus OBE CMG,
Dr Cyrus attained five different qualifications Professor Peter Gregson - Vice-Chancellor and President of Queen’s University, Kathryn
from Queen’s University Belfast: Bachelor of Cyrus, Eileen Sowney – First Trust Bank, Dr Christopher Stange – Hon. Consul of St. Vincent
Science (BSc), Bachelor of Medicine (MB), and the Grenadines in Northern Ireland
Bachelor of Surgery (BCH), Bachelor of the Obstetric Art (BAO) and Master of Surgery (MCH).
He was the first qualified surgeon to practice in St Vincent, returning home in 1963, dedicating his career to improve the standard of care
and quality of life for the suffering and ill. As the country’s first trained surgeon, he had to work across specialties, devoting long hours to
clear the backlog of patients, pioneering and adapting medical equipment for use.
In 1983, he was awarded the OBE, Order of the British Empire and in 2002 was designated a “Local Health Hero” by the Pan American
Health Organization. A commemorative stamp has featured his portrait. In 2003, he was awarded the CMG, Companion of the Most
Excellent Order of Saint Michael and Saint George, for service in the field of medicine. The Caribbean Health Research Council last year
recognised Dr Cyrus for “Outstanding Contribution to Health Research in the Area of Surgery”.

Employers can now accept ILR in an expired passport
The High Commission for St. Vincent and the Grenadines is pleased to advise that following communication between the Consular Section of the
Mission and United Kingdom Board Agency (UKBA), it was announced on the 3rd August 2010 by UKBA that they had reviewed its policy in
relation to employers being provided with evidence of prospective employee’s Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in a valid passport. With effect
from 2nd August 2010, it is now possible for ILR in an expired passport to be used as evidence of the Right to Work (RTW) in the UK. UKBA is
considering an amendment to the 2007 Order in due course to reflect this and also to issue new guidance.
The change came after a number of nationals contacted the Mission when their employers demanded that their ILR be transferred to their new
passport. The St. Vincent and the Grenadines Mission drew the matter to the attention of the senior authorities of UKBA and requested
reconsideration of the policy.
Ms Carolin de Freitas-Sawh, Counsellor, said “we are very pleased that UKBA has amended their policy. It was a matter of concern as some of
our nationals felt very intimidated and believed that the former instructions to employers was being used as an excuse to dismiss them from their
current employment or prevent them from being offered new employment’. She went on to add ‘Although is this excellent news for our
nationals with Indefinite leave to Remain, some of whom have been here for 40 or 50 years, we would urge those who are eligible to apply for
citizenship to do so at their earliest convenience. Requirements for citizenship will be toughened in July next year and the we are expecting a
substantial increase to the application fee in April‘.
For more information concerning the above please, contact the St. Vincent and the Grenadines High Commission on 020 7460 2588 or visit
