Greetings from the Chief Guest
It is indeed a very distinct honour to be invited as your chief guest this evening. I am humbled by President Balendra's gesture.
Needless to say, my wife and I are delighted to be here.
Everything was possible because we had outstanding and dedicated teachers like V.M. Asaipillai, A. Vythalingam, C.
Sabaretnam, M. Karthigesan, T. Ramakrishnan, and Vidwan Karthigesu, to name just a few. Standing behind them were
eminent principals M. Cumaraswamy and later V.M. Asaipillai. Together they sent so many batches of fine students to
university. But we also produced great results in the field of sport.
Hindu were JSSA soccer champions in 1953, 1954 and 1955. As a reward we toured and played the Eastern Province
champions, St. Michael's College, and won by an astounding 11-1. Next we drew 1-1 with Trinco United, a top 1st division club
in the country. For a team of schoolboys it was an immensely flattering result.
People were always mad about cricket in Jaffna. In our time Hindu were propelled to the top, when in1955 we beat St. John's
College and Jaffna College by an innings and had other victories. As the best in the North, we went on to play St. Anthony's, the
Kandy district champions, and later we represented the Jaffna Combined College XI against the visiting Australian School
Boys. But despite having two players who later played for Australia, they barely escaped defeat by an innings, with only two
wickets standing at the end.
In athletics, suffice to say that N. Balasubramaniam of our time was a shining all-island star of the highest caliber. He was a toprung triple jumper, who later held the national record from 1959 to 1966.
Our Sports Master was none other than the inimitable C. Thiagarajah, who coached, prodded, and guided us to many a victory,
in soccer, cricket and athletics.
I fear this account is all too short, and must apologise for its brevity, possibly even some inaccuracies, having to recall events
from the 50s. But they convey the essence of the incremental achievements that have gone, year after year over the decades, to
make up the history of our great institution, Hindu!

Scholarship has always been the hallmark of Hindu. Paramagnanam (N), my classmate and friend, brought high honour to the
college by becoming the first in the island in SSC examinations of 1953, winning the Dr. Hewavitarne Memorial Prize. Sadly,
he is no more, but his achievement lives on in our history.

I joined Jaffna Hindu College in 1951 and left school in 1961 to accept an appointment as a Post Master & Signaller.
At the time of my joining in the 4th standard the Principal was A. Cumaraswamy M.A.(Cal&Lon) Dip.In Ed.,Bar at Law (1933-1952). He was a
disciplinarian and was equally strict with both students & teachers. He used the cane unsparingly. It used to be told that he lashed the ground boy of
another School who had brought a message, mistaking him for a loitering student.
He was succeeded by V.M.Asaipillai B Sc.(Eng.) A.I.L.London - a qualified Engineer from City& Guilds, Imperial College. If W.A.Troupe M.A
(1926-1927) was the only European Principal, then there was a Ceylonese European Principal in V.M.Asaipillai; such was his attire, demeanour and
speech. Fact remains that Nevins Selvadurai 1892-1909 1914-1926 sowed the seeds for the development of the School, which in turn was nurtured by
A.Cumaraswamy, and the rich harvest was reaped by V.M.Asaipillai. Achievements are far too numerous to mention within this limited space.
C.Sabaretnam B Sc.Lond. succeeded V.M.A. He was Vice Principal from1953 to1961 and Principal from 1962 to1964. He was known as
C.Saban among teachers and Maths Saban among students. A mere look from him scared the students. As one in charge of admissions, he did a
filtering after the G.C.E. O/L results. A good many who either had bad records or were envisaged to be a problem for the administration in the smooth
running of the School were given marching orders, but sportsmen were considered productive and retained even with border line results. When
angry parents confronted him, the reasons he gave always stunned them and they would be dumbfounded.
M.Kartigesan B.A.Lond. Dip.In Ed. was a teacher from 1946 to 1970 and Principal in 1971. A ready witted humorous teacher of a rare breed,
he was brilliant in English and was good in Mathematics. Once on vacation from work back home, I was witnessing a Cricket Match between
Colombo combined Schools and Jaffna combined Schools. The venue was Duraiappah Stadium then known as “Police Grounds”. Alongside me was
Karthigesan. In this match Anandian Sunil Wettimuni scored a brilliant century. Karthigesan looked at me and quipped “Jaffna Man has suppressed
all the “Munis” by erecting small small Temples yet he could'nt suppress this Wettimuni”. This is one of his many instant jokes.
A.S.Kanagaratnam taught English in my H.S.C. second year. He taught simple English and encouraged small sentences. I remember that he
wrote a book titled “English with a smile”. When a student offended him or disturbed the class, he would not cane him with the cane in the class.
Instead he would send the Monitor to bring a cane from the class to which he is class teacher. This process took nearly five minutes and he would
continue to teach. When the cane was brought he would call the errant student and cane him, cracking some joke and laughing. For this act he told
the class that he was a blood pressure patient and that if he caned the errant student immediately, his temper would fray, resulting in the blood
pressure level shooting up. He lived for a ripe age.
As for the teachers in general, they were a dedicated lot. Some of them were an institution in their selected field. I will mention a few
teachers who took subjects for upper classes:
