The seasons have progressed as they always do (perhaps a bit quicker than we would like), and we have come full circle to another Spring. Fortunately, the approach of Spring signals the start of our gardening season and the return of FOPCON’S plant sale. It’s hard to believe that we completed our seed and plug ordering as far back as last October, but now we can walk through the production greenhouses at the Conservatory and see the beginnings of all of those hours spent poring over catalogs and websites. You can see plant growth on a daily basis; some of our annuals are blooming already, and the shelves are filling quickly. We are looking forward to seeing all of you at our sale and hope you enjoy this year’s diverse plant selection. There will definitely be something for everyone. Our catalog is arranged according to three main categories (the Edible Garden, the Ornamental Garden, and the Shade Garden). Within those three categories, plants are listed in alphabetical order according to their botanical name. This listing corresponds to the layout of the plants on the tables at the sale. We offer our plants in a variety of sizes; from a 4-pak of seedlings to 4 inch pots up to tall quart-size containers. All pricing is noted in the catalog and those prices are indicated by the presence of a solid-colored tag in each container. While we strive to keep the accuracy of the catalog as high as possible, please note that prices, container sizes, and availability of plants are subject to change up to and including the sale days. Pricing information: Yellow tag Blue tag Red tag Green tag $4 $6 $10 $15 This annual sale is presented by the Friends of the Oak Park Conservatory with the help of many dedicated volunteers. Your support helps the Friends provide quality educational programs, community events and other support for the historic Oak Park Conservatory. We are asking our loyal (and new) customers to please bring their own boxes or trays to transport their purchases home. We were unable to store our stash of cardboard boxes that we have gathered from local liquor purveyors in previous years and will therefore have a limited supply of boxes this year. The best recycling is reusing a box that you already possess. Thank you for helping out. See you at the sale! Plant Sale Committee 2016 The Oak Park Conservatory is a historic property of the Park District of Oak Park, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. 3 THE EDIBLE GARDEN Plants in the first section of the sale belong in the edible garden. Some are used as flavorings or garnishes, but, in one way or another, belong on your plate. Edible flowers such as calendula and pansy are included here. Also included are plants that attract pollinators or discourage pests. All require at least six hours of sun each day. Some may survive with less sun, but flowers and fruit will be more abundant if grown in the sun. HELP OUR SALE HELP THE ENVIRONMENT. If struggling grass in hard-packed soil describes all or part of your yard, this section of the plant sale is for you. Soil amendment is a good first step to a healthy shade garden. Humus from your compost pile, if available, is often needed, especially under trees with shallow roots. Mulch plantings with compost or shredded bark to conserve moisture. Avoid planting amid tree roots. You may begin with spring bulbs that bloom before trees fill out. Their drying leaves can then be hidden with a shady ground cover like plumbago or ajuga. For the rest of the season, choices of flowering plants include hosta, begonias, lobelia, and impatiens. Contrasting leaf texture, shape, and color will provide interest in a lovely, peaceful shade garden. HELP OUR SALE HELP THE ENVIRONMENT.
