Based on the internationally popular novel by best selling

(The Cider House Rules, The Shipping News, Salmon
Fishing in the Yemen), this captivating romance drama opens
as the mysterious young Katie (Julianne Hough) washes
up in the small North Carolina town of Southport, where
she makes it clear she is determined not to make personal

perils that come with love.

his G.I. Joe team face their greatest challenge yet when the
influence of an outside source causes the tide of popular
favour to turn against them.
When the President of the United States (Jonathan Pryce)
gives orders to have them terminated, thanks to the influence
of Cobra spy Zartan (Arnold Vosloo), they are targeted for
destruction from all sides.
Now, in order to save themselves, the survivors must
team up with Joe Colton (Bruce Willis) to bring Zartan
down and save the world.
Writer/director Andrew Niccol adapts Twilight author
Stephanie Meyer’s best-selling novel in which our world has
been invaded by an unseen enemy. Humans have become
hosts for these invaders, their minds taken over while their
bodies remain intact. Most of humanity has succumbed.
When Melanie (Saoirse Ronan), one of the few
remaining “wild” humans, is captured, she is certain it is
her end. Wanderer, the invading “soul” who has been given
Melanie’s body, was warned about the challenges of living
inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the glut of
senses, the too-vivid memories. But there was one difficulty
Wanderer didn’t expect: the former tenant of her body
refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

Greenstone DINING
I believe that
if you have a
passion and top
quality food,
then it is easy to
build long term
relationships with
your customers,
and we have that
here at Watami –
Owner, Debbie Wu
Authentic
Asian Cuisine
Watami Restaurant at the Stoneridge Shopping Centre is the ideal
place to take your family for a relaxed and fun experience while
savouring the scrumptious authentic Asian food on offer.
erving a range of Eastern meals,
including sushi, wraps, tempura,
soups, noodles and salads, Watami,
a recent addition to the Stoneridge
Shopping Centre, is the ideal
location for your next meal out.
Started by the congenial and enigmatic
Debbie Wu at Greenstone Shopping Centre
in 2007, Watami made the move across
to Stoneridge in August 2012 and the
restaurant has gone from strength to strength.
6 | The Greenstone Guide
“Stoneridge has been very good for us, I love
this centre!” she says, citing the casual and
relaxed atmosphere as being a good match for
her business. Wu is no stranger to the “sunny
and welcoming” centre as she is also owner
of the successful Point Break clothing store
at Stoneridge (and she also owns a House
of Coffee in Sandton City). She admits that
a coffee shop was the original idea for the
Greenstone Mall site, yet due to the number of
similar eateries in the centre, the concept for
an Asian restaurant was born.
The interior of the Watami restaurant is
tastefully decorated in a soothing and friendly
Oriental fusion style highlighted by the
Chinese lantern light-fittings and Oriental
wallpaper. The overall ambience is one of
cool cosiness – 80 patrons can be comfortably
seated (60 at the 15 tables inside the restaurant
and a further 20 diners alfresco). During warm
summer days the restaurant offers a welcome
respite from the heat, while in the evenings
there is no better place than the outdoors to
enjoy a cool drink and some delicious food.
Capably supported by her thirteen staff,
including two expert sushi chefs, Wu’s
restaurant was the first in South Africa to
offer Japanese cheese paper hot pots and
healthy paper grilled Chinese dishes. Watami
prepares every dish on order to ensure that the
patrons, around two thirds of which are eat-in
customers, enjoy fresh dishes every time. “In
this economy, if you have good quality food
and good value for money, people will come
to your restaurant,” she says, but notes, “We
are not fast food – if people want a quick meal
I wouldn’t suggest Watami. But if they want
to come to a place where they can relax and
enjoy the vibe, then Watami is perfect. It is not
a huge restaurant, but it’s cozy.”
The aforementioned sushi chefs are
incredibly gifted with each dish stunningly
presented. And while the sushi is definitely a
favourite, many stout sushi fans have ended
up being intrigued by the extensive menu,
subsequently ordered from the kitchen and
fallen in love with the food, becoming regular
visitors. And the menu is exactly what you

Teriyaki is a Japanese cooking technique in which meat or fish is cooked in a sweet
and savoury sauce called teriyaki. Teriyaki chicken is a lunchtime staple in Japan – teri
refers to the lacquered sheen that teriyaki sauce develops on the surface of the chicken,
while yaki means grilled.
Wu substantiates: “Our must-have dish at Watami has to be our teriyaki chicken – it
is a dish which you don’t get everywhere. The flattened drumstick which is then panfried and served with stir fried vegetables has become our signature and most popular
dish. People just love the sauce, which is a combination of rice wine, brown sugar and
soy sauce. Our Chinese sizzling beef and tempura prawns are also very popular.”
Teriyaki is a good blend of the sweet and savoury and best resembles authentic
Japanese food tastes without the overly American influence. It’s also versatile and can be
used on all kinds of meat and fish. Fish – yellowtail, marlin, skipjack tuna, salmon, trout
and mackerel – is mainly used in Japan, while meat – chicken, pork, lamb and beef – is
more often used in other countries. Other ingredients sometimes used in Japan include
squid, hamburger steak and meatballs!
8pm which offers a discounted two course
kiddies meal for children under 12 at a cost
of just R25. The ‘Let’s Spoil our Elders’ and
‘Love our Kids’ promotions are symptomatic
of Oriental traditions which savour and
appreciate the young and old.
After having spent nearly 20 years
living in and around the area, Wu is in no
mood to leave. “There is a good mixture of
people in Greenstone, and the surrounding
areas of Dowerglen, Edenvale and the
newer developments are all on the rise.
The clientele is different to Sandton and
Fourways, as the people here are more
family orientated. I believe that if you have
a passion and top quality food, then it is
easy to build long term relationships with
your customers, and we have that here at
Watami.”
As for future plans, Wu says that if the
right site becomes available, another Watami
restaurant following the same principles
could be opened up, and due to her love for
ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW
would want, both vast and varied, as well as
reasonably priced.
As would be expected of a restaurant with
a focus on Asian cuisine, soup and noodles
are well represented on the menu along with
an interesting variety of salads (such as the
BBQ Pork and Pawpaw Salad.) Well priced
beef, chicken, duck, pork, fish, prawn and
vegetarian main meals sit nicely alongside
Tempura (a Japanese-style crispy dish),
Oriental fried noodles and rice and Oriental
snacks such as Suno-Mono (calamari with
sweet vinegar and wakami seaweed) and
Toza Tofu (deep fried bean curd with fish
flake). Seasonal dishes such as Shabu Shabu
or Korean style paper grill set meals are also
served. Those with a sweet tooth will not be
disappointed as Watami offers a bounty of
desserts, including the intriguingly named
Chocolate Chopsticks and Heart-So-Soft.
The younger members of the family are not
excluded either, with Crispy Pork Chop,
Yakitori Chicken, Jap Chicken Nuggets and
Stir Fried Calamari Nuggets, all served with
chips, catering especially for them.
Wu knows the community she is serving
intimately, and is using this knowledge
to offer tailor-made specials to the locals.
“Apart from the half price sushi specials,
everyday between 3pm and 6pm we offer
half price cocktails so that people can come
past after work and enjoy a wonderful,
refreshing cocktail. I have also noticed
that the elderly in the community are often
neglected, so Thursday is Pensioners Day at
Watami where they can order a two course
meal for a discounted price,” says Wu.
Two other specials are worth mentioning;
the Eat and Drink offer for just R39 from
Monday to Friday between 11am and 4pm,
which includes a selection of over 15 of
Watami’s succulent dishes along with a
Freezo or Ice Daisy Tea; and Children’s
Day every Saturday between 11am and
and faith for the centre, and the Greenstone
area in particular, she is considering opening
up another outlet at Stoneridge focussing on
a different concept of Oriental food, because
as she explains, “There is a lot more to
Oriental food than simply sushi and sweet
and sour.”
So if you are looking for something a
little exotic, then Watami is the perfect
family restaurant for you. It is a treat for
anyone who loves Oriental food, with
Wu’s vision when she started the business
of offering a top quality family restaurant
that serves authentic Asian cuisine
unquestionably realised.

Greenstone shopping
A complete
solution
As you enter Greenstone from Van Riebeeck Road, two buildings
instantly catch your eye; the enormous Mr. Price Home on your left
and the more understated but no less impressive Tile Africa
Greenstone store on your right. With the brand’s bright orange a
prominent feature, and its vibrant marketing images adorning the
facade, it is a building which is hard not to notice.
8 | The Greenstone Guide
or those not familiar with Tile
Africa, it’s all in the name
(well, almost). Tile Africa is a
national chain of retailers with
two divisions; the retail division
comprises a chain of stores, and
the contracts division services the professional
specifying market. The ‘tile’ part of the name
is somewhat misleading though – yes, Tile
Africa is a supplier of anything and everything
to do with tiles – ceramic tiles, porcelain
tiles, wall tiles, mosaics, natural products,
borders and listellos, grouts, adhesives and
tile care products – but they also supply the
whole range of sanitaryware which you may
need when remodelling a bathroom. Their list
of products is extensive and includes taps,
mirrors and accessories, baths and spa baths,
showers and trays, shower roses and arms,
basins and vanities, toilets and seats, sinks
and prep bowls, trims and accessories and
waste fittings. So it’s no surprise then that the
Tile Africa Greenstone store is an impressive
1 000m2 plus in size, with a warehouse and
office component of the same bulk.
The Greenstone branch has been open for
just over five years, with Inge Coetzer as the
branch manager for the last three. She runs
a tight ship; the store is spotless, the stock is
plentiful, and importantly, you are served with
a smile. “My number one priority is a great
customer experience,” says Coetzer. “The staff
are very well informed and knowledgeable
about the products. They have all been at the
store for a long time and are able to assist by
giving the customer exactly what they need.”
As the company appreciates that tiling and
renovating can be challenging, and that the
choices are difficult, the sales advisors are
there to guide you, inform you and make sure
that the result is striking, within your budget,
and beyond your expectations. The taps and
accessory ranges are sourced from the leading
available brands, such as ISCA, Cobra and
Grohe.
Coetzer sees Tile Africa as a fashion, tile
and sanitaryware store. “We try and upgrade
and change the store as often as we can with
new lifestyle displays and accessories to
ensure that our customers feel comfortable
in planning their renovations and purchases
to best suit their needs and taste. Our aim
is to inspire; many people come to the store
without knowing exactly what they want yet
– we try to assist.” The bathroom displays
are put together by design experts so that
homeowners can walk in and view lifestyle
ABOUT TILE AFRICA
Greenstone shopping
Tile Africa is a leading supplier of local and international tiles and bathroom
and kitchen fittings, with nearly 40 showrooms nationally. Its national footprint
ensures a seamless flow in its relationships with developers, architects, specifiers or
decorators – from concept to completion. The company prides itself on professional
service and the fact that its products are easily accessible.
Tile Africa is a division of Norcros SA, which in turn is part of the International
group Norcros Plc, a British-based company listed on the London Stock Exchange.
Norcros SA is made up of three South Africa based companies; Tile Africa, Johnson
Tiles, a world class manufacturer of ceramic and glazed porcelain tiles and Tal
Adhesives, the leading local manufacturer of specialist adhesive products, including
products for tiling installations.
We offer absolutely everything that
you could think of in terms of tiling
and sanitaryware. We are also right
on the doorstep of those living in
Greenstone, so it’s an easy choice
– Branch Manager, Inge Coetzer
For the Greenstone homeowners, she
believes that what sets them apart from
their competitors is that the Tile Africa
range of tiles and sanitaryware is very
different and unique when compared to other
offerings. “We stock absolutely everything
that you could think of in terms of tiling
and sanitaryware. We are also right on the
doorstep of those living in Greenstone, so
it’s an easy choice.”

settings where each tile, each bath and
each tap has been selected so that it works
as an harmonious whole. You can view tile
displays where tiles have been combined
in a myriad of ways with mosaics, borders,
glass and natural stone to give you fresh
new ideas for your own home. Tile Africa’s
slogan, “Our home is your home,” is
particularly apt, especially as Coetzer
explains that her goal is to make customers
feel as welcome as if they were in their
own homes.
Yet they also cater for different markets at
the store. For DIY’ers, Tile Africa offers the
whole solution, including all the tools and
adhesives you will need to complete the job
right the first time. On the professional side,
having close on 40 stores across the country
makes it easier for contractors working in
a number of different locations – there is
always a Tile Africa close by. Being a large
retailer has its advantages too, as they are
able to quickly source stock if the store
doesn’t have a particular item on the shelves.
Conversation quickly turns to the rapid
growth of the Greenstone and neighbouring
areas. “Greenstone is quiet and clean and
the residents have everything that they
could want right here. There is always a lot
going on in the area, and positive things
are happening for the suburb, which is
ultimately resulting in the upliftment of
the rest of Edenvale,” she says. Coetzer
notes that although the property market is
steady and moving up rather than down, she
has noticed that the renovation market is
booming. “The next two years are going to
be very good, and the East is on the up,” she
says with a smile.

Greenstone LIVING
reenstone’s Thorn Valley Estate
is adorned with numerous
architectural masterpieces –
modern, sustainable examples
of forward thinking designs
are aplenty, while large, glass
fronted mansions embellish most of the
streets. Yet in amongst all of these is a house
which is at the same time both contemporary
in design yet homely in feel.
Designed and built in close conjunction
with the owners, a young local couple
and their two small children, the house,
completed in 2007, is a large, double storey,
three bedroom, three bathroom home with a
distinct family vibe. The sleeping quarters
are separated from the living areas on the
top floor, with the ground floor notable for
its open plan spacing, copious amounts of
natural light and clean, clear, modern lines.
The grand sandstone framed entrance
leads you past a decorative wrought iron gate
and through a large, monolithic wooden front
door into a bright, welcoming family home.
The double volume entrance hall opens up to

From the tastefully decorated bar and
entertainment area, glass doors open
up onto the considerable covered patio
with a built-in braai and a wooden deck
inviting you into the crystal blue waters
of the small splash pool. The indoors and
outdoors seamlessly interlink, creating
ample space for entertaining guests both
young and old. The generous green and
tropical garden is a haven for the couple’s
children where they spend many hours
entertaining themselves on the jungle gym.
Back inside and upstairs, an open plan
study area borders on the main en-suite
bedroom as you leave the landing from
the stairs. Mirrored cupboards leading
to the bed provide ample storage space
for clothes and seem to make the room
stretch on forever. The en-suite bathroom,
in black, white and cream, is large and
luxurious, offering the homeowners a
tranquil retreat from their busy lives. The
two colourful kid’s rooms are serviced
by another modern bathroom with
contemporary wooden and stainless steel
finishes, offset by shots of colour in the
form of towels and carpeting.
Throughout the house, natural elements
reoccur, be it the hints of sandstone, a
palette of neutral creams and browns or
the use of wood. Yet the home is also
adorned with many twentieth century
touches; striking oranges, blues and reds,
glass and stainless steel in abundance and
interesting decorative touches interspersed
through the house.
It is a home that makes the most
of its corner stand, as well as of the
available natural light, and a structure
that encourages interaction and openness.
But it’s in the passages which echo with
children’s laughter, the central family
photographs and the odd soccer ball here
or toy there where the true magic in this
Thorn Valley home lies – in the fact that it
is more home than house, more love and
laughter than pure bricks and mortar.

aster eggs, hot cross buns,
family braais... If your diet
and exercise routine went by
the wayside over the last few
weeks, post holiday time is
all about damage control. The
sooner you start to get back to healthy
habits the better. This article provides tips
on post holiday workout routines.
Before you start a post-holiday workout
routine, think about what it is you’d like
to achieve and then create a plan of action
for doing so. When it comes to deciding
upon exercise goals you should make sure
they are realistic. For example, it wouldn’t
be reasonable to set yourself a goal to lose
5kg in a week. Instead you might like to
aim to lose 5kg in a four week period.
The key is setting yourself goals that you
can achieve – if you set yourself up for
failure it will be hard to remain motivated.
Once you have established realistic
12 | The Greenstone Guide
goals, write them down in a checklist
format and think about how you will
achieve them and how you can reward
yourself when you do. For example, what
forms of exercise will you undertake? Do
you need any equipment or apparel? It is
a good idea to have a variety of different
workout options to avoid boredom. When
you achieve a goal you can reward yourself
with a massage, a new piece of clothing
or something else of your choosing. The
following are some suggested post holiday
workout routines:
Beginners post holiday
workouts
If you aren’t in the best of shape, or
are starting a fitness regime as a new
resolution you’ll want to ease your way
into it and build up over time. If you can
afford it, hire a personal trainer. A personal
trainer can assess where your fitness level
Easter is officially over and
it’s that time of the year when
people head back to the gym
in droves, after a weekend of
chocolate eggs and huge dinners.
Maybe a little kick-start is all that
you need to get back into shape.
is at and will know when to push and when
you have reached your fitness capacity.
Otherwise start out simple and
increase your workout every few weeks.
For example, during week one you
could go power walking and do sets of
15 repetitions with very light weights.
During week four you should be ready
to start to pick up the pace by perhaps
adding some short jogging stints and
increasing the weight or repetitions you
perform. Swimming and water aerobics
are great activities for people who are
extremely out of shape, or have joint
problems.
Advanced post holiday
workouts
If you have simply overindulged or
skipped a few workouts during the
holidays then it is important that you get
back into your fitness routine as soon as
possible. Even a few weeks of absence
can result in both muscle and cardio
fitness loss. There are several ways you
can compensate and get back to your preEaster weight and fitness level ASAP.
For every 2kg you have gained, you’ll
need to burn approximately 500 extra
calories a day to compensate. This is
typically a little over an hour of aerobics,
a 45 minute moderate intensity run, or a
two hour walk. You can either increase
the number of workouts you perform each
week or increase the intensity at which you
can work out.
If you do interval training it is easy
to up the intensity of your workout. For
example, if you usually jog at three minute
intervals, push yourself to do four minute
intervals. You can step up your yoga
routine by heading off to a Bikram yoga
class. These classes are held in hot rooms
with temperatures at around 40°C. This not
