9th Masonic Manhattan News Roster Issue 2015 Volume 48, Number 5 Masonic News Ninth Manhattan District Devoted to the interests of Freemasonry, its District Lodges, their members and their families ROSTER ISSUE 2015 St. John’s Weekend Celebration by R∴W∴ Jerry Messina DDGM St. John’s weekend began on Wednesday, June 24th for Barbara and me this year, wanting to get an early start for the shopping and preparation that is necessary for a successful weekend for our guests of the 9th Manhattan District who travel a very long distance in support of the Grand Lodge Officers and our wives. Our shopping ended early enough to allow time for an intimate dinner for Barbara and me at Delmonico’s Steak House in Utica. R∴W∴ Celestino and Sue arrived on Thursday with the Borbeck family to help with the preparations. Celestino and I attended training at the Masonic Campus on Friday which lasted until late in the day. Grand Lodge accommodates the attendees for training with breakfast and lunch including ample time for the renewal of friendships made during our first year of service to the Grand Lodge of the State of New York. Friday evening was spent at the Holiday Inn Utica in their hospitality suite where Barbara and Sue set up a buffet dinner for our guests. The festivities lived up to the custom of continuing until the early hours of Saturday. The weather report was rather discouraging for the entire weekend. Even Freemasonry cannot dictate the sun to shine. Our entire weekend was without rain except at the close of activities on Saturday afternoon and even then it wasn’t an insignificant rain. In addition to again inviting the Assistant Grand Lecturers to participate in the parade, the M∴W∴ William J. Thomas threw us a curve ball. He directed us to march in the opposite direction from our destination, the Daniel D. Tomkins Chapel. His reasoning became apparent when we all saw residents from Acacia Village waiting at the Portico for the parade to pass them. Waving to our residents, many of them disabled, was a special moment for me. Barbara and Sue did not get into the chapel last year to share in the in- vestiture ceremony…this year they managed to have front row seats in the balcony. It was good to not only share in the service with my fellow Deputies and Staff Officers, but with my wife as well. She provides the support and motivation for me to do my work. Our Saturday continued with a fine dining experience at The Aqua Vino Restaurant, just outside Utica. Having several years of history with them for our dinner party, the staff went over the top to provide our group with exceptional food and service. We were entertained by Mr. Carlton Boone, a local keyboard player who often entertains the residents of Acacia Village. Festivities continued at Holiday Inn with cocktails and conversation until very late in the evening. In addition to receiving the support and friendship of R∴W∴ Kurt Ott and Ruth, an unexpected visit to our party was made by Deputy Grand Master, R∴W∴ Jeffrey Williamson and his party, R∴W∴ James Kintzel, R∴W∴ Chris Hough, R∴W∴ Jim Macconnell, and R∴W∴ Richard Kessler. As special thank you goes to our good friends from the 5th Manhattan District, R∴W∴ Wilfredo Lopez, DDGM and R∴W∴ Martin Richards, Staff Officer who shared the evening of friendship with our District We wish to thank our friends for making the journey to Utica to support their Grand Lodge Officer TEAM, and our wives, for another year. Special thanks to our predecessors, R∴W∴ Kevin Koebel, PDDGM and R∴W∴ Georg Dauterman, GSB for their continuing support and guidance. Thank you to Brother Joe and Lorraine Altmann not only for their attendance, but for inviting Helga Flor, a resident of Acacia Village and a Forget-Me-Not Sister of the District to share the evening with us. On behalf of Celestino and Sue and my wife Barbara, I thank you for your support during our first year. I assure you we will continue to support both our District and our Grand Lodge to the best of our ability to the conclusion of our terms and beyond. 9th Masonic Manhattan News Page 2 By: Bambi Schimmel And the Hall runneth over - - it was the Honoring of yet two deserving Brothers; R∴W∴ John Krebs for his 49 years in masonry and R∴W∴ Horst Mahr for his 45 years in Masonry. Both Brothers were accompanied by their proud families for this festive occasion. Congratulations slightly belated to both of you. A wonderful visit from our dear friend, Schiller Sister Janet Grimm and daughter Tina, who were here to be a part of their niece’s wedding. Later on we were privileged to accompany Janet to view the exquisite new home of her sister Linda and hubby John’s in fashionable Westbury. After a much too short visit Janet returned back home and is now back with all her Masonic friends, Rosi and Karlheinz Soeller (Schiller), Rudi and Trudy Maier (Copernicus), Ingrid and Alois Wolf (Copernicus), Barbara and Bill Ritterbusch (Allemania), and Renate and Goetz Vehse (Harmony). Everyone sends greetings As you can see, It’s Masonry all over, no matter where you hang your hat. I received a surprising phone call from Helga and Hans Hill (Schiller) in the Carolinas who are anxious to see us again. Helga already booked a seat with me for the annual October Fest at the Taj Mahal. We’re really looking forward to your visit. Our Sister Lillian Schnase is on the mend again after an horrific ordeal on her trip to Germany. On the flight to Duessel- day hospital stay cut short the visit with her brother and other family members. Safe and sound back in New York, our Lillian is doing her rest and recuperation with the assistance of family and friends over here. We are thrilled to report a new addition to the Buck family. We sadly report on the passing of our Our big Winner Rose Sieb Bambi 4 9th Masonic Manhattan News Roster Issue 2015 Page 3 Forget-Me-Not Ladies by Jerry Messina. DDGM The Forget Me Not flower has significance not only in our 9th Manhattan District, but in prewar Germany as well. In 1934 it became evident that Freemasonry was in danger. It was felt that wearing a Forget-Me-Not flower on the lapel would provide brethren an outward means of identification while lessening the risk of possible recognition and reprisal by the Nazis, who were engaged in wholesale confiscation of all Masonic Lodge properties. Freemasonry went undercover and this delicate flower assumed its role as a symbol of Masonry surviving throughout the reign of oppression. Today the Forget Me Not adorns our 9th Manhattan District pin and is a symbol of who we are and how strong our District remains. Soon after my appointment as District Deputy, I realized I would be attending many events in our district, one of those events being the Widows Luncheon. This annual event is sponsored by the Past Masters Association, and individual Lodges to honor the surviving spouses of our departed Brethren. The financial responsibility for the luncheon has always been, and should remain shared equally by the Lodges and the Past Masters Association. At their luncheon, I spoke with every lady, asking for their opinions. My conversations with them revealed many dislike being referred to as “widows”. In fact, several of the ladies do not choose to attend the luncheon held in their honor because it is called the Widows Luncheon. The word “widow” is centuries old and translates literally to “empty and alone”, not a very an appropriate description of the surviving spouses of our departed Brothers who devoted much of their lives to the 9th Manhattan District. R∴W∴ Kevin Koeberl has graciously agreed to work with me to establish and maintain a data base with the contact information for every Forget-Me-Not Sister in our District. With this information we can ensure that every lady receives an invitation to attend the Forget Me Not Sisters Luncheon, a holiday card, and the assurance they will not be forgotten. In our solemn obligations, Masons promise to look after our “widows and orphans”. What a reassuring thought to know that when we lay down the working tools of life, our ladies who gave us their support throughout life……….are never forgotten. Lessing’s Rockaway Party by Kevin Koeberl Some 6 years ago the Brothers of the Lessing Fellowcraft Club populated the back room of the Polish German Sports Club in Ridgewood and discussed the tentative events scheduled for the upcoming summer. The litany of traditional events made the rounds including the inevitable picnic and the inescapable weekender to the Catskills complete with the empty pool, sulphur smelling shower water and the punctual clanging of the meal bell all highlighted by the customary dance around the beer keg. Those who have driven on dirt road complete with deep dried ruts understand that oftentimes it requires an aggressive jerk of the wheel to snap the car out of a rut. The suddenness and shudder of this action inevitably ruffles the feathers of the passengers. Lessing Brother and New York City Parks Supervisor, Jack Rohan, metaphor- ically snapped the wheel when he exclaimed, “Let’s do a Beach Party in Rockaway!” With a collective sigh and a few rolling eyes the discussion evolved into the experiences of those assembled with the Rockaway Beach of the 1970’s. The conversation conjured up images of urban blight, petty crime, hypodermic needles in the surf with tales of fully laden garbage barges seen passing over the horizon and miraculously returning empty. Many Brothers had long left Rockaway public beaches behind looking for greener pastures on Long Island or the Jersey Shore. Jack, as supervisor for the area encompassing so much of the beach and boardwalk area assured the Brothers of a perfect venue and worked diligently to secure the permits for that first year and each beach party thereafter, totaling five consecutive years. Rockaway, like so much of the city, had undergone Lessing Brothers enjoying a cool drink at the beach Lessing Ladies enjoying a day at the beach a renaissance far removed from the images of 70’s and early 80’s with a renewed atmosphere, sifted sands, clean surf and a renewed boardwalk teeming with throngs of people enjoying the New York City Summer. With the devastation wrought by hurricane Sandy in October 2012, the entire Rockaway Peninsula was a again dealt a tremendous setback which it continues to recover from. The hearty people of Rockaway persevere to rebuild and the beaches are filled with heavy equipment adding new and better infrastructure to the shoreline. In this half decade the Lessing Beach parties have taken on a life of their own. New York’s finest have been known to entertain our kids by showing them their police cars and letting them hit the siren and then joining us after their shift was complete; Jack giving tours of the construction and maintenance projects that allows millions of visitors to enjoy the beach each summer, and, if lucky, you may get a glimpse of Andy Burzynski’s cold war era Trabant. Should you ever find yourself as a passenger in that car driving down that dirt road and the driver snaps the car out of that mud rut, remember not to scold him but to thank him for putting the vehicle on a new track which may land you at a gem located right in your own backyard. R∴W∴ Jeffrey M. Williamson, Deputy Grand Master has graciously accommodated my request to schedule our Town Hall Meeting at Whitestone Temple on September 12 at 3PM. The purpose of this informal meeting is to provide the Deputy Grand Master the opportunity to meet the Brothers from our Districts as well as discuss his vision for our Fraternity during his term as Grand Master. In addition, the Brothers are encouraged to bring their questions to the Town Hall Meeting for open discussion with the Deputy Grand Master. Many issues and possible changes loom in the Bambi future of our Fraternity during the term of office of the incoming Grand Master. I have spoken about many of the aforementioned changes during my Official Visits in the District, often encouraging discussion. This is the opportunity for the Brothers of the District to share their views and opinions with the Deputy Grand Master. Your attendance and your questions will reflect the 9th Manhattan District truly cares about the future of Freemasonry. Our Town Hall Meeting will be attended by the three Kings Districts, as well as the Queens District. This multi-district event will be an opportunity to socialize with, and hear the opinions from other districts. The 9th Manhattan District will be the host district for this event. I hope I can count on the Masters, Wardens, and Brothers of all 13 Lodges to support this meeting. Our collation after the meeting will be a “tailgate” hotdog, sauerkraut and beer dining experience which will hopefully encourage the continuation of discussions. Date: Saturday, September 12, 2015 Time: 3 PM Place: Whitestone Masonic Hall, 149-39 11th Ave, Whitestone NY Dress Code: Jacket is appropriate (no aprons are required) Please RSVP the District Deputy regarding your attendance and for more information Cordially &Fraternally, R∴W∴ Jerry Messina, DDGM718.909.1700 gerardmessina@aol.com from pg. 2 Bukenberger, who leaves behind his family in England, California and New York. May you rest in peace dear Paul. A success story of the Novak family. The granddaughter of R∴W∴ Werner and Gudrun Dietrich, beautiful Brittany, has been attending the German Language School since the age of 7 (first grade). She has now completed all classes and tests and received her Level 2 AATG Diploma this year. Brittany will now be able to study and teach in Germany in the near future. She is graduating from South Clarkstown High School – and will attend College to study Pharmaceuticals. Rockland Community College, Hunter or Lehman are her future. Parents Karin and Peter Novak and grandparents Gudrun and Werner are great supporters of Brittany’s goals. Where did all those beautiful children come from? It was the christening of adorable little Krista Rose Schneider who threw her first gala party. Our Whitestone Hall was filled to capacity. Every seat was occupied where young and old enjoyed this wonderful event. The baby’s parents, Master of Schiller Lodge Rick Schneider and his love Christina had this great affair catered. “Big” brother Ricky had a mirage of his friends creating their own entertainment when adorable little Krista Rose was shown off to everyone in attendance. Gorgeous Nicole Radske Miskiewicz, the 1st Vice Chair of the G/A Steuben Parade was showing off that little bundle of joy; carrying Krista Rose around; maybe a practice run for what the future may hold for her and hubby Russell. For all the noise-sensitive adults, Dad Rick had earplugs on hand, just in case. Congratulations to the entire family and thank you for a wonderful party. Another year, another Strawberry Festival, where else but at our Plattduetsche Park in Franklin Square. All beautiful seniors with families and friends were filling the large ballroom and, as always, Vice President of the Ladies’ Society, Caroline Ober (the drill sergeant) as I so lovingly call her, had all servers assigned to their respective stations. Everything worked out perfectly. The chorus was a delight, the cake was delicious and the smiling faces of everyone present showed that this was yet another winner. Talking “winner” here, by the lucky draw our Schiller Sister Rose Sieb collected the First Prize. Hopefully you survived this hot and humid summer (for someone who loves 10 feet of snow, go figure). Looking forward to the fall where already plenty of gatherings and parties are filling our calendar. Ciao my faithful readers until we chat again, B. Masonic activities have slowed down with picnics, parties and leisure activities replacing the ritual that Brothers partake in during the Masonic year. The attendance of the Brothers at Lodge and district outings for summer promoting Masonic camaraderie continues to be impressive. Under the leadership of the DDGM, Jerry Messina, and the Grand Director of Ceremonies, Celestino Carlos, the Brothers and Sisters of the Ninth Manhattan have been attending Lodge picnics and outings with pride. June was a very busy month for activities involving many of the Brothers of the Ninth Manhattan District. The Half Century Club has new officers and we congratulate President Heinz Jacobs, Vice President Harry Barth, Secretary Eric Jacobs, and Treasurer Robert Schimmel and wish them well for a successful term. St. Johns’ weekend was well represented by many of the lodges in the district. It was a great weekend and there was no rain…. not even when the parade started. It was great to see so many Brothers and wives come out to support DDGM Gerry Messina and his wife Barbara and Celestino Carlos and Sue as they begin the last year of their journey. We thank them for being great hosts and hostesses and because of their gracious hospitality, Trinity Lodge Booth at the Bluegrass Festival selling Funnel Cakes and Ice Cream Compliments of Lessing Lodge #608 9th Masonic Manhattan News Page 6 Noble Ninth Roster Issue 2015 from pg. 5 everyone had a great time. Many of the Lodges held their honor nights in June and Congratulations to all those brothers recognized for the many years they have served the craft. These special nights provide an opportunity to thank the many brothers that have contributed their talents to their Lodges and the District. It also is an opportunity to expose new members to achievements that they can strive to obtain. Congratulations to W. Pedro Maldonado on his installation as Worshipful Master of Uhland different. Nicole Donahue won the bike and many others went home with great prizes. Jr. Warden Pat Donohue wants to thank everyone for coming out in spite of the scorching heat. These are the days everyone is so thankful for the shade of the pavilion. He also wants to thank the DDGM Jerry Messina and his wife Barbara for coming out and being the official “clam chucker”. The Master of Trinity Lodge, Paul Withjack, also hosted the Brothers to a pool party at his home in mid-July. Another great day of Masonic camaraderie was had by all who attended. Trinity Lodge would like to thank all the brothers that helped sell funnel cakes and ice cream at the booth for the Traveling Man Bluegrass Festival. A very special thank you goes to new Brother Joe Becker and his lovely wife Vivian because they both arrived early and worked all day manning the both. During Trinity Lodge’s Honor Night, R∴W∴ Rudy Feye was recognized for 50 years, Bro. Walter Bloomberg for 40 years and R∴W∴ Werner Kress for 35 years. The DDGM Jerry Messina was present and presented Sister Caroline Dunne with a Scholarship from the Grand Lodge. Caroline will be entering The State University at Albany in a few weeks. The Trinity Lodge Sister Circle enjoyed their annual barbeque at the home of Secretary/treasurer Helga Lins. Thirteen sisters joined the fun and had a great time. They enjoyed relaxing, playing cards, and each other’s company. Copernicus Lodge #545 once again held its annual picnic at Roy Puckhaber’s home. Approximately 50 Brothers and wives enjoyed Roy and Lorraine’s hospitality. The Brothers and their families are looking forward to their annual weekend trip to Lukans which has been sold out for some time. They rented out the entire place and it should be quite a weekend. Harmony Lodge #199 held its summer Andrew Kuo from Harmony Lodge #199, is a Governor on the Board of Philadelphia Shriners Hospital and he takes great pride in their good works. I encourage any Lodges or Sister Circles who are looking for worthy organizations or institutions to be the recipient of any charity monies to consider donating to the very worthy Shriners children’s hospital of Philadelphia. King Solomon Beethoven Lodge #232 held their Honor Night in June and R∴W∴ Stanley Lewin received his 40 year Bluegrass stage AGL, received his 40 yr pin and certificate. Karl Hank and Heinz Jacobs each received their 50 year pin and certificate. Their annual barbeque was held at Mike Seeley’s house and a number of the brother’s are looking forward to their annual sleep over at Tappan which is August 15th. The ever energetic Freddy Jente continues to be active during the summer months. He spends much of the summer “playing” with his son and enjoying many outdoor activities. The Brothers of Lessing Lodge held their Members of the Ninth Manhattan with the Grand Master on the Cruise to Alaska barbeque’s at the Masonic Park in Tappan. The brother’s, family and guests get together once a month throughout the summer to keep their Masonic family together. A number of the members of the local fire department attended this barbeques. The local animal control officer was there as a new member as were many other guests. This is good for Harmony Lodge as they are introducing men to the craft and are acquiring new members. Bro. pin and certificate. The W∴ Brandon Skolnik received his Past Master’s apron and certificate. Von Mensch Lodge #765 held their annual picnic at Tappan at the same time as the Bluegrass festival. It was a fun day with great entertainment, great weather and great company. Herder Lodge #698, honored a number of brothers during their Honor Night. Heinz and Eric Jacobs received the Lewis Jewel and Tom Brauner, Past annual picnic at the pavilion at the home in Plattduetsche on May 30th. The picnic was well attended and everyone had a great time. The “boys” of Lessing continue to be very active. In the early part of summer some of the boys took their annual motorcycle ride to Lake George to the home of Jack Rohan’s brother. This annual event is tradition as it has been done for a number of years. The Fellowcraft Club of Lessing sponsored its annual Beach Blast at Rockaway Beach. The weather was great and this par- ty gets better every year. Mark your calendars and plan on attending this beach party next year. The Masonic Yacht Club hosted their opening day festivities on June 7th at Captain Bill’s. It was a full house, a beautiful day and a great brunch. It has been a great summer for boating and all water activities and I hope you have all been taking advantage of the warm temperatures and clear skies. Quite a large number where sold and they were instrumental in raising a large amount of money. On board, there was a Town Hall type meeting and the Brothers were encouraged to bring their questions and concerns. The group shared their evening meal together and really got to know one another. Acquaintances became friends and friends became family. The shared experiences on this cruise brought people closer together in Masonry and in life. Every evening at least one brother had a birthday and was treated to a birthday cake and a chorus of Happy Birthday. The temperature and humidity rose bringing repressive heat and I found myself thinking that somewhere there must be a happy medium!! Sudden and torrential rains often strike, wreaking havoc with many homes and communities. It seems that the weather patterns of long ago were much easier to predict and I wish for simpler times. The opening day ceremonies were held on June 7th at Captain Bill’s in Bayshore. It was a beautiful day and the sun gleamed on the water making it appear to sparkle as the back drop for the installation ceremony. The following officers were presented and sworn in by Fred Lange of Herder Lodge and Past Commodore of the MYC: Jeffery Arist Commodore, Edward Forman Vice Commodore, Paul Withjack Rear Commodore, David Gardner Fleet Captain, Dan Rosenfeld Port Captain and Special Events Coordinator, Oscar Gar- cia Fleet Surgeon, Robert Stein Secretary, Albert Li Treasurer, and Rick Witthohn Chaplain. The Brothers were sworn in and each was presented with the burgee of their office. Each burgee was ceremoniously hoisted up the flagpole to fly majestically in the breeze. The officers looked very impressive in their crisp white uniforms standing at attention on the beautiful, huge deck at Captain Bill’s. During the installation ceremony, special recognition was given to Rose Seib for her continued support and generosity to the Masonic Yacht Club. Rose was made an honorary member of the First Mates Club and will forever be held on its roster. Following the installation of Officers and the laying of the wreath to recognize members that are no longer with us, there was a delicious brunch buffet with countless choices of breakfast foods, dinner choices and delicious desserts. Members and friends mingled both in the restaurant and out on the deck enjoying the weather, and building friendships. In June, the MYC was well represented at the Grand Secretary’s Golf outing. Once again, we sponsored two foursomes. We also sponsored holes for this worthwhile cause. This has proven to be a great day of golf followed by an evening of good food, Masonic camaraderie, raffles and awards. It is a wonderful time for Masons of the different districts to get to know each other. Please consider supporting this event as we are always looking for more golfers. You do not have to be a good golfer to take part in this special day. You skill level is not important. Consider joining us next year and you will have a great time. During St John’s Weekend the Masonic Yacht Club set up their annual informational display under the tent at the Masonic Campus in Utica. Bob and I were unable to attend the festivities this year as our granddaughter and Trinity Sister Circle member, Caroline Dunne, graduated from high school the same weekend. I would like to extend a very special thank you to Oscar and Bea Garcia for stepping up and taking our place. They are both very dedicated members and very dependable and graciously give of their time when needed. Oscar and Bea did a great job and had a good time seeing old friends and making new ones. Next year, while up at St. Johns Weekend, stop by our table to hear of the latest news and look at the photos. It is a great way to learn about the benefits of belonging to the club. The annual Great Sailing Regatta took Page 13 place at Camp Turk as planned. Past Commodore, Tony Cancemi, Lessing Lodge, and Chaplain Rick Whitthohn, Copernicus Lodge, represented the MYC during the boy’s session. The wind cooperated and the boys were able to get their mojo on. Those of you that have children between the ages of eight and sixteen should consider sending your children to Camp Turk. There are so many activities to take part in. Check their web site and see what is available that will make your little campers smile. Many of our Masonic brothers and sisters do not realize what a gem we have with Camp Turk as our very own Masonic Camp for children. If you have an opportunity to be in that section of the state stop in and ask for a tour. I promise that you will like what you see. Bob Stein and I were joined by the DDGM Jerry Messina and his wife Barbara for the girl’s session. The girls sign up as teams of four and chose a team name. They give their teams crazy names such as the Pizza Bagels and the Dirty Toothbrushes. After lunch, the girls assemble at the water front, put on their life jackets and the race begins. The brightly colored sails are unfurled and the boats race for positions along the course. It was a great day and I think the adults present and spectators enjoyed it as much as the racers. The girl’s line up at the water front at the conclusion of the race to received their trophies. This year we met a number of campers from our district. Jay Weinrich’s , from Uhland Lodge, granddaughter Paige introduced herself to us which was a real surprise. She is a lovely young lady and Jay should be very proud of her. While the camp director, Ray was announcing the names of the girls that had requested to stay another week and had been given permission by their parents to do so, we heard him announce Mave Moriarity. This lovely young lady was the granddaughter of Mike Moriarity from Allemania Lodge. The Master of Harmony Lodge, W∴ Livni, requested that Jerry Messina check on his lovely Paige. We had her come up to the front and she was such a pleasant young lady. This year was particularly gratifying as three campers came up to us after the race and thanked us for coming up every year and doing the race. We have been doing this for a number of years and if you would like to walk will us, please join us at 6:45 at field 5 at Jones Beach. Please remember that the ever popular East End land cruise to the wineries is scheduled for October 24th. Reserve your spot on the bus and enjoy the day with us. This is the perfect opportunity to get to know about the MYC while enjoying a fun time. We are always looking for new members and we encourage anyone who might be interested in joining to come to one of our meetings or join us on one of our land cruises. This is the only Masonic group that includes woman as First Mates and are present at the meetings. Their input is not only encouraged but greatly appreciated. Our new Commodore, Jeff Arist and the Past Commodores welcome all suggestions for new activities or how to improve existing ones. Everyone’s input is not only welcomed but strongly encouraged. This is your club and we encourage participation by all its members. Our Commodore and the Bridge will consider all suggestions and looks forward to hearing from you. Many of the MYC members once again supported the Shriner’s Organization by volunteering to sell raffle tickets and CD’s at the “Who” concert. The fundraising efforts go to support the Shriners Hospitals for children. Their efforts last year at the Eagle’s concert raised quite a bit for this great cause.
