A Truckworx Newsletter Spring 2014 Written & Edited by Leah Mitchell & Daphaney Tripp Busworx Blue Bird and Mobile County Team Up for First Propane Fleet in Alabama Busworx Blue Bird recently teamed up with Mobile County Schools to provide the very first propane powered bus fleet in the state of Alabama! Mobile County purchased 85 buses total through Busworx Blue Bird; 30 propane powered buses and 55 diesel powered buses. Pat Mitchell, Director of Transportation for Mobile County Schools, says “After seeing school districts across the country successfully switch their school bus fleets to propane, we knew it would work for Mobile County, too. When it came down to running a safe, clean, and efficient fuel, propane seemed to be a perfect fit.” On local Busworx Blue Bird team and products, Pat continues, “The [Busworx] Blue Bird professionals took the time to educate my team, making our conversion process a smooth transition. Without a doubt, Blue Bird has a proven product! We are excited about our new buses!” The list of benefits to utilizing propane-fueled vehicles is extensive. First, propane buses are estimated to have an annual fuel savings of $7,000 per bus! In a fleet of 50, that is $350,000 in cost savings in fuel alone per year! In addition, propane is a safer, cleaner, and a more efficient fuel than the traditional dieselrun buses. The buses are also much quieter. Steve Phillips (Corp. Bus Sales Manager) and Adam Franklin (Bus Sales Coordinator) agree that Blue Bird’s propane powered bus is quite an impressive product. Steve says, “We have definitely had skeptics, but every school system that has seen and driven the propane powered Blue Bird Vision has decided to strongly consider them.” He says he has shown the bus to at least 10 schools and all have said they plan to include at least some propane buses in their next bid. We expect to see a substantial increase in propane bus sales over the next year. Customer Corner Billy Barnes Enterprises B Monroeville, Alabama illy Barnes Enterprises, Inc. was started by Billy Barnes in 1975 as a woodchip hauling business in Monroeville, AL. The company has since grown to around 210 employees and includes a flatbed division, woodchip hauling division, and a specialty hauling division, all operating primarily in the Southeast. The company has always been family-owned and operated and Billy Barnes’ stepson, Terry Kilpatrick, has been the president and owner since 2005. Terry started with the company in 1979 after 5 years in the military and began to learn all aspects of the business. He says the company has enjoyed steady growth for the majority of the time it has been in business. They pride themselves on treating their customers well and very seldom lose a customer. In fact, they still do business with the company they originally started hauling for back in 1975, Harrigan Lumber. Billy Barnes Enterprises, Inc. runs a fleet of around 180 trucks, mostly Internationals, but Terry says he wanted to try something different this time, and recently purchased 2 Kenworth T680 day cabs. So far, he says they are running great and the drivers really seem to like them. He has two more T880s on order, as well. Terry and his wife have five children. Two of his kids, Taryn and Bryan, as well as his nephew, Luke, also play key roles in the company. Outside of the office, Terry says he enjoys spending time with his family and his 2 grandkids. They are expecting a third grandchild in November. He and his daughter, Taryn, are also active with a group called Grace to Ukraine that hosts orphaned children in Alabama for summer camps and provides materials for orphanages in Ukraine. They recently returned from a 10 day mission trip and will host a group of children this summer. Wade Rolison Trucking Butler, Alabama R olison Trucking Company is a logging company and committed Truckworx customer based in Butler, AL. The company purchases standing timber (timber deed or pay as cut), harvests timber (select cut, thin pine plantation, and clear cut), grinds debris, and also works in forestry consulting and biomass recovery. The owner, Wade Rolison, initially started trucking in 1982 and later bought his first 1985 Kenworth W900L and business took off. In 1999, he and his father went into business together and purchased his first multi-fleet including four W900Ls. In 2005, the company started logging with one crew and four trucks and have been hauling ever since. Previously, Wade added Peterbilt trucks to his fleet but quickly made the switch back to Kenworth because of the level of service and resale value. He also continues to choose Kenworth because he has formed a great partnership with Andrew Wiggins and actually was the first customer in the area to try two new T880s. Today, the company has grown to 20 trucks and 4 crews. Wade says his favorite trucks are his W900Ls and that he is partial to them because he has the most experience with them and they’ve been around the longest. Outside of logging, Wade, his wife, and his son are active members in their church and he enjoys kickball, baseball, hunting, and fishing. showroom 5 Spring 2014 Best of 2013 Award B Presented by Blue Bird Corporation usworx Bluebird received the 2013 Best in Bus Award for making an exceptional effort to start and grow the business.
