The bible is filled with events that start with a closed or open door. Bridesmaids enter an open door if they are ready. Bridesmaids find a closed door because they were not ready. The passage of the Israelites to freedom was initiated by a sign on the doorpost. In the book of the Revelation, Christ opens doors no one can close, and closes doors no one can open. What does it mean to us to cross life’s thresholds? Which thresholds do you boldly step across? Which do you avoid? And what are the consequences of those choices? This is the subject that will occupy us in August. Do ;you know the show The Price is Right? Contestants often have to choose between door number one, two or three. Behind some are useless duds no one wants. Behind others, incredible treasures - cars, vacations, fabulous fur coats and jewelry. Life often offers similar choices. We open a door thinking it leads to treasure, only to later realize that “treasure” was a dud. We close doors that appear to lead nowhere we want to go. We don’t see the Light that would guide us to treasure beyond imagining In my life, I’ve made lots of boneheaded decisions about which doors to open and which to close. I never bothered to pause at the threshold to get my bearings. I blundered through an open door, when I should have had second thoughts. Or slammed doors behind me before my time in the abandoned room was complete. Fortunately, I’ve also stepped across (or been coaxed across) thresholds that delivered me more deeply into Life itself. And I’m not going to lie. Those are some of the scariest thresholds. What about you? Which doors will you open? Which will you close? Meet me in August and we’ll all take the journey together. You never know what you’ll find behind door number 1! yours along the way, S F P M & I C S Sgs Ss August 17, 2014 2-4 p.m. (shine or rain) Creekside Community Church Don’t miss this end-‐of-‐summer music celebration. Headlined by “our own” CrossRoads Gospel Band, Soul Food promises to be a fulAilling event since it also features ice cream with all the Aixin’s. We'll also be blessed with music from Doug and Alexis Woods, and the Creekside Worship Team. These festivities are sponsored by the Elbert County Pastors‘ Coalition. Rev. Alan Small has graciously offered use of the outdoor pavilion at Creekside, or the church itself, in case of rain. Bring ice cream (homemade -‐ or not, in an icy cooler). And a donation for the Peter Spear Memorial Scholarship for the Conservatory for Jazz Arts in Denver. Peter is the recently deceased son of Rev. Bruce and Susan Spear. Reading it recalls and even rewrites our deepest stories, helping us recognize and respond to the true God who saves a suffering, shattered world If we want to experience the true, transforming power of the Bible, we can’t be content with the occasional dip into shallow waters. We need one another to discover the deeper rivers of biblical writing. As we engage together in study, sharing our thoughts and listening to others, we truly encounter the Bible’s power to help us live well by loving well. Covenant Bible Study is a new way to step into that power. It’s different from other Bibles studies, because it’s grounded in, and emphasizes, the ‘covenant’ relationship as the unifying pattern throughout the Bible. Using both Testaments, we’ll see the biblical story with new eyes. We’ll read, wrestle, and talk together about covenant with God and covenant with each other. We’ll discover the profound interconnectedness of scripture as one single story. And we’ll uncover depths that reveal our own personal story within the biblical words. This new Bible study is deep, but not logistically complex. In fact, it’s quite Alexible. It is divided into three 8-‐week sessions. Each has it’s own covenant theme: Creating the Covenant; Living the Covenant; and Trusting the Covenant. Of course, you’ll get the deepest enrichment from participating in all three phases of the study. But personal schedules change. It may not be possible to complete three sessions. Perhaps you have room for one session, or two. You make the choices that work for you. The sessions will be held as follows: Creating the Covenant Sept. 25th - Nov. 13th Living the Covenant Jan. 8th - Feb. 26th (2015) Trusting the Covenant March12th - April 30th . Watch for Covenant Bible Study sign-up sheet on the Information Table starting August 17th. Cost for all three session is $40. Vickie, Devin & Doug Doug and Vickie met when Vickie was a senior in High School. They started dating after she graduated; they dated for quite a while. They married in the historic Ruth Chapel in Parker. Ruth Chapel was Parker UMC’s first church home! They moved from Aurora to Elizabeth in 1999, where they built their own home. Doug and Vickie have a daughter, Devin who is twelve years old. Devin starts middle school this fall. Both Vickie and Doug work at the University of Colorado Hospital. Vickie is the trainer for their computer program system. Doug works in the supply depot. Vickie grew up in the Parker Church where her parents are still active. She has a sister and a brother who live in the Denver Metro area. Doug’s mother and a brother live in Colorado. His second brother lives in San Antonio, TX. There are things known and things unknown, and in between are the doors. ...Jim Morrison Doug had a liver transplant last June and is doing very well. Having celebrated the first anniversary of his new liver, he likes to pass on the hope and healing by volunteering in the hospital’s transplant unit. He talks with patients, offering encouragement and whatever help he can provide. Vickie is also the leader of our United Methodist Women’s group (UMW). In the past year, under Vickie’s leadership, our UMW women have collected money to purchase emergency relief blankets for Church World Service. They’ve also collected many supplies for the Tennyson Center for Children in Denver. UMW is currently asking for school supplies donations at the church. Upcoming is the third annual UMW Craft Fair on October 11th. Proceeds will once again benefit CASA in Elizabeth. Crafter applications forms, Vickie notes, are available on the Information Table in our Worship Center. Vickie and her family spend a lot of time in the mountains, where they have a cabin. They like water sports and boating although they no longer have a boat. Doug enjoys target shooting and fishing. Vickie likes reading and scrap booking. She also does a lot of volunteering around church. Daughter Devin is into Karate, big time! They have three dogs, two labs and a hound mix. (As told to Nosy Nellie, reporter for the EUMC news) Sack-It! Lunch Update With just one week left in our summer Sack-it! lunch program, we thought you would enjoy this update. Twenty-three volunteers (some helping on multiple days) have helped serve lunch to over 122 people.
