With some, their charms are obvious, but then there are the Arnolds. Arnold was eight years old when he came to Woods in July. His skin was in bad shape, his coat was dull, he was overweight, he drooled. Despite all of this, he quickly became a favorite with staff and volunteers. A sweet disposition, a willingness to please, and endless patience made him universally loved. He participated in Critter Camp, pairing up with a camper each week during the summer, teaching them about the responsibilities of pet ownership as they coaxed and encouraged him through the agility course. Volunteers frequently chose him to help represent Woods at community events. Our Community Programs Director taught him to speak. But five months later, he still did not have a home of his own. Linsey, one of our Animal Care Staff, had an especially soft spot for Arnold and on occasion would take him home with her at night. Before long she figured out that of all the animals she brought home, Arnold was her family’s favorite. It was his personality that won them over, and the fact that he made all of them happy. So in November, Arnold went home with her for good. Our Mission: To serve, protect and shelter homeless companion animals; To place animals in humane environments; To promote responsible pet ownership, provide humane education and reduce pet overpopulations; To celebrate the human/animal bond. Since settling into his forever home, Arnold’s skin problems have disappeared, his coat is shiny, and he has lost nine pounds. He still drools, but that is not a problem for Linsey and her family—they keep drool rags handy and from time to time take note of how many drool bubbles he has suspended from his jowls—the record is four on one side. Is the perfect cat or dog waiting for you at Woods? 2 Shelter Tails From the Director’s Desk Dear Friends of Woods Humane Society, Board of Directors Kevin Dye President Lenny Jones Vice President Lisa Adams Treasurer Simone Michel Secretary Jon Ansolabehere Jimmy apRoberts Stacy Gregory Jennifer Melton Melanie Morgan, DVM Dan Lloyd WHS Shelter Staff Thank you for making 2012 such a resounding success! With your help we’ll have an even bigger impact in 2013 ! , 3 4 Shelter Tails Volunteer Corner Research and experience has shown that providing high quality photos of adoptable pets increases their likelihood of a quick adoption. But with limited resources, it’s often a challenge for shelters of all sizes to find the time and expertise needed to make that happen. Here at Woods we’re lucky enough to have not one, but two pairs of talented volunteers who, week after week, spend countless hours capturing the essence of our many adoptable pets. Mimi Ditchie has been volunteering at Woods for seven years and can usually be found in our cattery with photo partner, Linda Beatson. The two have teamed up to make sure that each of our feline guests is treated like a Hollywood celebrity. With Linda keeping their attention in the background, Mimi takes the photos, often dozens, until she captures the unique personality of each cat. When the two are asked what keeps them coming back year after year their answer is simple: “We just want to see these animals end up in loving homes.” More recently, Chelsea Mills and Marianne Bollinger joined the team, but their focus is on our adoptable dogs. Researching, experimenting and even attending a workshop on this very topic, the duo has quickly mastered the art of K9 photography. Chelsea is the photographer, while Marianne works to create just the perfect pose, and between the two of them they have captured the spirit and beauty of all of our adoptable dogs. Welcome to Our New Board Members Woods Humane Society is fortunate to benefit from the passion, expertise and insight of a volunteer Board of Directors. We proudly welcome our newest members to the team: Jennifer Melton (with Tiller): Jennifer grew up in San Luis Obispo and graduated from Cal Poly in 1996. In 1999 she co-founded Cloud Star, a manufacturer of all natural pet treats that is based locally and distributes its products worldwide. When not busy churning out Buddy Biscuits, Jennifer can be found on an early morning hike with her good friend Tiller (adopted from Woods), coaching AYSO soccer, spending quiet time with her family, or helping Woods Humane Society with their next big thing. Lisa Adams (with Sasha) Lisa is Vice President/Branch Manager for Rabobank, NA. She lives in South County with her husband, two sons and two wonderful pets, beautiful dog Sasha and spunky cat Jazz. Lisa was born an animal lover and fell in love with Woods Humane Society on her very first visit. Not long after she joined the Board of Directors to work on behalf of the many homeless companion animals in SLO County. In December we also said goodbye to longtime board member and Treasurer, Cheryl Wieczorek. Cheryl joined the Board in 2007, shortly after Woods moved into its new facility, quickly expanding from a small shelter with a few employees to a full-service humane society with a staff of 30. Her finance and accounting skills were invaluable during that transition and in the years that followed. The Board of Directors and staff at Woods thank Cheryl for her six years of service and congratulate her on her new role as General Manager of Pasolivo in Paso Robles. While her passion and expertise will be missed on the Board, we’re grateful to have her continued support in other ways. Shelter Tails Wiggle Waggle 2012 Wrap-Up We celebrated everything DOG at the 20th annual Wiggle Waggle Walk for Woods: A Festive Day in SherWoods Forest in October. The event was an amazing success and we are happy to report that both our fundraising and participation numbers far exceeded expectations. Over 500 dogs helped to raise $50,000 to benefit the homeless animals of Woods Humane Society—making Wiggle Waggle the largest K9 event on the Central Coast. The 2012 Woods Cup Team Fundraising Trophy went to Aaron Avila and his team of “fun”draising Shenanigans. Special thanks to our Wiggle Waggle planning committee, led by Laura Slania, who worked tirelessly to produce our wonderful event. Wiggle Waggle would not take place without the generous support of local businesses and we raise our paws to the great folks at the Central Coast Pet ER, Lemos Feed & Pet Supply, PG&E, Charter Media, KSBY, Blue Buffalo Food Company, CloudStar, Rabobank, Conoco Phillips, SLO Brewers Guild, Rajun Kennels, Jaffa Café, Meathead Movers, Farm Supply, Galaxy Theaters, IMPO Shoes, Pismo Beach Veterinary Clinic, Carmel & Naccasha LLP, First American Title, The Kennels of Springdale, The Frances Chang Seeds of Love Foundation, American General Media, El Dorado Broadcasters, and the SLO NewTimes. Plans are already in the works for the 21st Annual Wiggle Waggle Walk, and this year’s event is already looking to set new records and will include a lot of new surprises! Make sure to join our email list for updates. Corporate and business sponsorships are available for the 2013 Wiggle Waggle Walk for Woods. Joe & Judy Leonard: Looking to the Future Joe and Judy Leonard began volunteering at Woods in September of 2009. Judy had just retired from Arroyo Grande High School and Joe found time between projects at his high performance auto shop in Grover Beach. Like most volunteers it didn’t take long for them to fall in love with one of our adoptable animals… then another, and another. Judy jokes that “one of the best results of volunteering has been our adoption of three Woods cats. They initially caught our eye but have since won our hearts” “Volunteering at Woods has opened our eyes to the immense contribution being made by staff and volunteers,” Joe explains. “Through their adoption program, spay and neuter programs, micro-chipping services and education programs Woods is making an immeasurable impact on the lives of homeless animals in SLO County. But what we love most is knowing that even those dogs and cats that are not immediately adopted will stay as long as necessary to find a loving home of their own.” In 2010 Judy and Joe set up their trust to include a future bequest to Woods Humane Society. “We included Woods for a number of reasons,” explains Judy. “Most importantly, it’s our way of ensuring that Woods will always be there to care for the homeless dogs and cats of SLO County. It’s also our way of showing appreciation for the love, respect and professional level of care provided to all the animals at Woods. The staff has made us feel like part of the Woods family, and for that we’re very grateful.” Many years from now Joe and Judy’s vision, compassion and generosity will become their legacy. Their bequest to Woods will be used to underwrite future renovations to the Cattery facilities and to provide a safe, happy and healthy place for cats and dogs. “It was such a simple process and you don’t have to have millions to make a difference,” says Judy. “Our pets have given us so much over the years. This is our way of giving something back.” 8 Shelter Tails 5th Annual Wine 4 Paws Wine drinkers and animal lovers unite! The fifth annual Wine 4 Paws weekend, presented by Cloud Star, will be held at 70 pet-loving wineries throughout the Central Coast on April 13 and 14. All weekend long participating wineries will share their proceeds with Woods Humane Society by donating a percentage of sales or all of their tasting fees. Either way, you end up with great wine and the animals at Woods benefit. Sarah Tomasetti, the amazing Woods volunteer who cooked up the idea for Wine 4 Paws in 2008 and has organized the event since, said, “It’s been very exciting to see Wine 4 Paws grow into a well-known event that draws people from throughout California and beyond. In year one, we were thrilled with 30 participating wineries and $7,000 raised for Woods. This year we have 70 wineries participating and have set a goal of $35,000!” The event includes a free passport available to print on the Wine 4 Paws website (www.wine4paws.org) or you can pick one up at any of the participating wineries during the event. When you visit a winery and help generate a donation, you’ll get your passport stamped. With four stamps, you’ll be entered to win one of many raffle prizes. Presented by our friends at Be sure to mark your calendar for April 13 and 14, grab your Wine 4 Paws map, and enjoy a weekend of fine wine and fundraising. To see a full list of participating wineries and get your map and passport, visit www.wine4paws.org. Then head out to the wineries on April 13 and 14 to taste wine, buy a few bottles, and help Woods Humane Society unite homeless pets with new loving families.
