Opulent, dense, expressive wines that will enthral the masses; medium-term potential. The superstar of the vintage; stupendous precision and stamina. Oak Higher quality carpentry has built finer tannin structures with less oak flavour. Buy Bin 407 and Bin 389; don’t miss the Claret magnum giveaway. The Best $55 Penfolds Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 Never in the history of Bin 407 has a cabernet of such desk-thumping precision been let loose. Coonawarra and its neighbouring regions have loaded this vintage with every classic cabernet character in the book. Tannin engineering is of NASA precision, oak balance is impeccable and that lingering, crunchy red- and blackcurrant finish is haunting. Buy fast, drink slow. Drink 2023-2033 96 points $65 Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shir az 2008 An aristocratic wine that carries on the dynasty of the even-numbered vintage reign of 389, the king of the Bins. Shiraz leads out with signature black plum, pepper and dark chocolate flavours, while cabernet brings up the rear with crunchy blackcurrants, tobacco and capsicum fruit. That classic 389 backbone of steely, firm, fine tannins will ensure it holds the throne for decades. Drink 2018-2033 96 points $34 Penfolds Bin 28 K alimna Shir az 2008 Buckle your harness, the biggest, most exuberant Bin 28 of the modern era is about to hurtle you straight through the sound barrier. Its sheer power of all manner of black fruits, integrated dark chocolate and liquorice is beautifully framed by a fine mesh of intricately textured tannins. Sit back and watch the crowd gasp in astonishment. Drink 2011-2020 94 points $40 Penfolds Bin 311 Tumbarumba Chardonnay 2010 Ignore the red wine bigots, the tastemakers know that the chardonnay with the red cap is every bit as feisty. Penfold’s recent trajectory into the chardonnay firmament has been scorching and its most high-strung expression is Bin 311. The icy foothills of Kosciuszko have infused more crystalline minerality than ever, suspended in a firmament of grapefruit zest and subtle white peach. Drink 2011-2019 94 points Penfolds Coonawarr a ‘Claret’ Shir az Cabernet 2009 1.5lt magnum Wine Taste Exclusive Review No token giveaway, and no looming blockbuster, either, this is a proper, serious take on the great Australian red blend – my kind of wine! Coonawarra shiraz takes a confident lead here (more than three-quarters of the blend), in all of its peppery, plummy, crunchy, tangy glory, gliding into those finely honed, firmly structured, textural Penfolds tannins. French and American oak, large and small format, old and new, nestles its dark chocolate comfortably into the background. Not for sale, you can only land this big bot as a bonus on six bottle buys from selected independent retailers. You know you want one. Drink 2019-2029 94 points The Rest $65 Penfolds Bin 150 Mar ananga Shir az 2008 Penfolds’ brand new, jet-black foray into a single subregion is a voluminous, glossy thing with crashing waves of ripe black fruits and dark choc oak. Without the polish of regional blending, it has an inherent rawness and integrity, with a poise derived from those signature Penfolds tannins. Drink 2014-2020 93 points $30 Penfolds Bin 138 Grenache Shir az Mourvèdre 2009 An appealing, slurpable, early-drinking Bin 138, this is a voluptuous glob of juicy blue fruits, liquorice allsorts and sarsaparilla, framed by soft, supple tannins. A light chill is in order to tone its exuberance. Drink 2011-2014 92 points $40 Penfolds Bin 23 Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir 2010 Savoury and beetroot-flavoured, this young, edgy style will appreciate a couple of years in confinement for its pronounced, spicy oak to integrate and its red berry and mixed spice flavours to unravel. Drink 2012-2016 92 points $34 Penfolds Bin 128 Coonawarr a Shir az 2009 Poor Bin 128 has never been quite the same since he was downgraded from a three-year-old release to two years in the cellar. Young and astringent, sappy green pepper flavours detract from black fruits and pepper in a finely woven structure. Drink 2015-2019 90 points Where to Buy Six bottles A participating independent retailer is your only chance to score that bonus Claret magnum. Hurry. Single bottles Watch the price war between Dan Murphy’s and 1st Choice and leap in on Friday or Saturday 4-5/3. Dozens Vintage Cellars is offering two Riedel glasses and bonus Cellar Shares.
