Sailor’s Creek
On April 6, 1865, Confederate and Union
soldiers, along with a galaxy of generals, met at
Sailor’s Creek for what would be the last major
battle of the American Civil War in Virginia.
72- hours later, General Robert E. Lee would
surrender his army at Appomattox Court House.
Visit the renovated Overton-Hillsman
Farm House Museum where historians will
reflect on the house’s role as a Federal army
field hospital during and after the battle. Sailor’s
Creek Battlefield Historical State Park and
the Overton-Hillsman Farm House are on the
National Register of Historical Places and listed
as a National Historic Landmark.
Also, stop by the newly opened Visitor Center
filled with descriptive exhibits that will guide
guests through the events of April 2, 1865 to April
8, 1865; just one day before the surrender of Lee’s
Army of Northern Virginia.
High Bridge
The last days of the war, two battles were fought
to protect this structure from destruction. While
a portion was destroyed by the Confederate army,
Union soldiers were able to cross the Appomattox
River below on a small wagon bridge and continue
their pursuit of Lee’s forces.
Today, High Bridge Trail State Park is a multiuse trail ideal for hiking, bicycling and horseback
riding. Its centerpiece is the majestic High Bridge,
which is more than 2,400 feet long and 125 feet
above the Appomattox River. The bridge was
built in 1853 as part of the South Side Railroad.

Here on April 9, 1865, General Robert E.
Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant,
bringing an end to the Civil War. The war cost
more American lives than World War I and II and
the Korean War combined. The McLean house
and the surrounding village, beautifully restored
to their 1865 condition, are now the Appomattox
Court House National Historical Park. The
courthouse accommodates a visitor’s center with
displays and slide shows which vividly depict the
circumstances and the monumental events that
took place here.
Museum of the Confederacy
Appomattox
Drawing from its rich collection of artifacts and
documents, this Civil War museum interweaves
the story of the Confederate States government,
the military, civilians, and enslaved and free
blacks. Exhibits detail events leading up to, during
and following the war. Visitors experience the
“Appomattox moment” when the armies of two
warring nations laid down arms in April 1865.
The words of Robert E. Lee, used to address his
troops for the final time, can be heard surrounded
by images and uniforms of those present at the
surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia. Of
special interest are General Lee’s sword and the
uniform that he wore to the meeting with Grant
at Appomattox Court House. Visitors can explore
the lives of soldiers, civilians and African-Americans
with the interactive Wall of Faces.
The museum is located at Rt. 460/Rt. 24
intersection, just one mile from “The Surrender
Grounds. Open 10 AM-5PM daily; open 10 AM-6PM
Memorial Day-Labor Day. The museum is closed
New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
