Landscape Design in California We are an Economic Force!
I would personally like to thank all APLD CA
members who participated in our recent survey.
With greater than 40% response rate thus far,
we were able to attend our meeting with
the LATC Exemption Task Force better able to
respond to questions about WHO are
Landscape Designers and HOW MUCH do
they contribute to the CA economy. I can tell
you that, if referrals to C27 Landscape
Contractors is any indication, APLD CA is
contributing tens of millions of dollars a year to
the green economy. If you expand that to

If you have not yet received and returned your survey, please do
so ASAP. We would like to have 100% response rate. This is
important to our legislative strategy, and you play the critical
role. While we are representing you at the LATC Task Force meetings, you are
the only way our message will be dispersed into the green community.
Please continue engaging contractors you work with, vendors and other
designers, and professionals in the discussion of landscape designers
achieving an exemption in the Practice Act that will enable us to continue
being a green economic engine. I attended the first Task Force meeting. It's really stimulating being involved
with our organization, especially now as we pursue an identity for the
"landscape designer" at a state level. It adds intensity and awareness of how
vulnerable a landscape designer truly is under the current Practice Act.
Enforcement actions make it a cause I can believe in. And, when it is
explained that landscape designers legally are only permitted to do planting
plans and place tangible objects, I’m motivated to change things.

At one point during discussions at the Task Force meeting, I found myself
wondering, "What is it that a Landscape Architect does that is different from
landscape design?" And, "Why would a property owner need a Licensed
Landscape Architect?" I have an opinion on those questions. More than a
decade ago, I was enrolled in the UCLA Landscape Architecture program,
but left to pursue what seemed a better match with my natural inclination….
working with horticulture and homeowners creating gardens, healing the
urban environment one landscape design at a time. Like many of you, I
sought out other educational opportunities to make me a better landscape designer. My expertise in
creating outdoor living spaces has defined the type of design projects clients
hire me for. Times change. I want to stay as current as possible with my skills. Recently I
enrolled again in the UCLA Landscape Architecture program. Will I become
a licensed landscape architect? Who knows? It’s the learning that matters
for me. I can say that in over 10 years of practice I have never been asked to design
a project that required grading of a parking lot, design of a horseshoe swale,
handicap ramps or any municipal or public works. These clearly would
require the superior knowledge and skills of a Licensed Landscape Architect
to protect the public's health safety and welfare. What I do may not rise to
the level that needs a landscape architect, but it is more than planting plans
and placing tangible objects.More than ever, I feel homeowners/consumers and the
environment are best served having a choice of professionals to serve their
needs. Until I sit for and pass the license exam, I am a landscape designer.
And my work matters!

In 1863 Frederick Law Olmstead, Jr. embraced the title “landscape architect”
and went on to become a founding member of the American Society of
Landscape Architects (ASLA); but even his ASLA cofounder, Beatrix
Jones Farrand, preferred the term “landscape gardener” to describe her
prolific landscape architecture practice. Sixty years ago, in the nascent days
of the CA Landscape Architects Practice Act, the age of Mad Men, and prior
to iPods and internet communication, we were all, first and
foremost, DESIGNERS of landscapes. What elements of landscape design,
that are not regulated by existing codes and civil protections, rise to the
requirement of hiring a licensed landscape architect to protect the public?
This is our central question. Since the original conception of the Practice
Act, the demand for landscape professionals and landscape design has
exploded, and permeated every strata of society. We need to apply some
common sense to this situation, and look to the future. In an age of water
conservation, lowimpact design, and livable communities, the talents,
expertise, and accessibility of landscape designers must be harnessed, not
diminished.
I wonder about the statefunded educational system that trains landforming
professionals who are not attracted to commercial or public projects or never
desire to grade a road or parking lot. What becomes of them?

Not everyone WANTS to pursue licensure. Why are trained professionals
prohibited from following different paths, especially in a time when their
services are so desperately needed by consumers who will never want to
hire a landscape architect?
It obviously takes dedication and competency to aspire to the highest level of
landscape design and become a licensed landscape architect. But not
everyone wants that path, and currently in the state of CA the only DESIGN
alternative is to relegate oneself to planting plans and placing tangible objects
at residential properties. If landscape designers are qualified to
design planting plans and objects for residences, what is different
about planting plans and placing objects in commercial and public settings?
The distinction begs reason and common sense. There must be a path for
those of us who march to the beat of a different drummer. Personally, I find it frustrating that in California, ANYONE may design a two
story wood frame construction home, but as a landscape designer, I cannot
design the arbor outside that home. In discussions with various legislators,
this argument finds traction because, explained this way, landscape
architects appear to be trying to protect the profession of landscape
architecture rather than the people of California’s choice of professional. Vecchio Trees
It IS hard to understand the difference between landscape architecture and
landscape design. The LATC and landscape architects need to explain WHY
the public NEEDS to hire a licensed landscape architect in every situation
other than residential planting plans. This is a question that ASLA has been
struggling with for decades as they try to educate the public about landscape
architecture – but still the profession of landscape design proliferates in a
growing marketplace. The distinctionmust be very difficult to explain. The
APLD’s members are listening intently.

Day Tripping in the Delta Tour
of a Sod Farm

A 90 minute drive from the Bay area,
but a world away on the San Joaquin
Delta, a group of APLD members
from the East Bay and San Francisco
districts accompanied Merritt College
department chair Chris Grampp and
his students for a tour at Delta
Bluegrass Company, an APLDCA
Gold Sponsor.
We were warmly greeted by Eddie
Zuckerman and his staff and learned
a bit of history of Zuckerman Family
Farms. The familyowned farm has
Eddie Zuckerman describes DBC's
supplied asparagus, potatoes, corn,
Biofiltration sod and tomatoes to northern and central
California since the 1920's. In 1978,
the Zuckerman's began their thriving
sod business, Delta Bluegrass Company (DBC), growing sod on the rich
peat soil on McDonald Island. The strong push in California to restore areas
with grasses native to the state (prior to the 1880's) prompted DBC to begin
extensive research and development in the areas of irrigation, drought
tolerance and maintenance of native grasses. In 2004, Delta Bluegrass
Company partnered with other industry experts to be the first company to
develop native grass blends in sod form.
Eddie, along with Jodie Sheffield, DBC's seed specialist, led the caravan of
attendees around the island. The first stop was DBC's irrigation trials and
research area . Native turf blends are shown in sidebyside plots with
irrigation applied at 30% and 50% ETo (evapotranspiration rate) and in
mowed and nonmowed conditions. This was the most educational stop on
the tour where Jodie and Eddie answered questions ranging from the best
blend for shade tolerance to how grasses are selected for inclusion in blends.

Grassland Mix™ a blend first developed for CalTrans projects, the group
moved on to Jodie's acre of research, where she tests the viability of new
seed blends. The large scale test beds showed the beautiful massing of
grasses and hinted of future grass/wildflower seed blends.
The caravan snaked along the levee roads, past olive groves and tracts of
potatoes, to a sod production lot and where we were mesmerized by the
sodcutting tractor/baler, Trebro AutoStack Harvester cleanly cutting and
palletizing neat 'sushi rolls' of native sod.
We finished the day by experiencing true delta hospitality with a barbeque
lunch on the deck of DBC's duck club socializing and recanting the day
'down at the farm'.

CONTINUING WITH OUR COMMITMENT TO CONSTRUCTIVE
MEETINGS: We have been especially pleased to have the opportunity to have Michelle
Langdon, one of our members, give us an informative Google Sketch Up
tutorial for our most recent meeting. It was well attended and we all were
given an opportunity to follow along and ask questions. WORKING WITH OUR SPONSORS: We continue to offer a few minutes at
the beginning of our meetings to our local sponsors. They use this valuable
time to tell us about their products and services. They seem to enjoy our
meetings and we enjoy getting to know them on a personal level.

The birds, bees and butterflies were very busy visiting the LA District’s
“Wildlife Friendly” display garden at the LA Arboretum’s GROW! Festival, on
May 46.
The 30’ x 40’ centerpiece display was the work of a tireless group of APLD
designers who took a variety of plants and materials from sponsors and
local vendors, and wove together an experiential garden designed to educate
about the importance of inviting wildlife into our gardens.
Monrovia Nursery provided the majority of plants. Beautifully
grown California natives from Village Nursery and San Marcos
Growers illustrated how plants can provide food in the form of seeds, fruit,
pollen, and foliage; as well as providing cover and nesting sites. Belgard Hardscapes provided the wall system for the raised 8’ x 8’ pond.
Bourget Brothers provided additional hardscape materials, and Stepstone
donated pavers. The glazed purple fountain centerpiece was provided by
Jackalope Pottery, and showed the importance of providing water for wildlife.
Asian Ceramics supplied an assortment of beautiful pots, Terra Trellis
provided the eyecatching circular trellis at each of the three entrances to the
garden. APLD member Katharine Parra installed an artful habitat wall, or “insect
hotel”, filled with an assortment of found objects designed to provide shelter
for insects and lizards, and nesting materials for birds. The hardworking

APLD East Bay Certification Workshop

Sustainability by Design: Landscape Seminar Series
May 24, May 31, and June 7, 2012 8 am – 12:30 pm
UC Cooperative Extension’s Environmental Horticulture Department
in San Joaquin County is hosting this progressive sustainable
landscape series.
Three halfday seminars focused on sustainability in:
Design Construction Maintenance Each week will be packed with information from specialists in these fields. The scope of the material will promote sustainability by addressing the
continuum of a landscape's life from the requestforproposal through
concept design, installation, and followup maintenance. WHO SHOULD ATTEND? Planners, agency personnel, landscape
architects and designers, construction managers, and commercial
maintenance managers.
COST: $75/person for the series; $30/person for individual seminars. Coffee
and a morning snack are included.

Bamboo Woodworking Classes at Bamboo Sourcery
Sebastopol, CA
Bamboo Sourcery Nursery and Gardens is offering bamboo woodworking
classes this summer. The first workshop is an introductory handson crafting
class on June 24th, 10 am 4 pm. Participants will learn how to cut, pin,
split, weave, tie, bend and join bamboo. The second class is “Bamboo Barrel Vault Day”, on July 29th, 10 am – 4
pm. Participants will learn how to curve and tie bamboo into a large half pipe

form (in other words a barrel vault) that can be used as a trellis, chicken
tractor or shade structure. Participants will learn about design, harvesting,
lashing and splitting. Both classes will be taught by Darrel DeBoer of DeBoer Architects, who has
led dozens of workshops in building bamboo structures, in the US and
internationally. DeBoer has long held a particular interest in using bamboo
and other natural materials in construction. He is currently the President of
the Northern California Chapter of the American Bamboo Society and lives
in El Sobrante, California. Preregistration is required and the workshops cost $75 each. For

East Bay District Event Invitation APLD Pays Huge Dividends

APLD district and chapter board members are venturing out now in search of
people to fill the positions on the district and chapter boards for next year.
APLD California is an extraordinary organization. It is run by people who
have made the support and upliftment of others a priority in their lives. They
are the role models who show us what service is. I invite you to join a district
board or eventplanning committee. I dare you to inspire others with your
unique presence.
Yes, I know, we have full, busy lives. How can there possibly be room for
volunteering? One could easily say that volunteering is time spent, and money
not earned. Yet, I can tell you firsthand that the benefits are clear and
compelling.
When we give love, do we worry about running out of it? How about when we
offer compassion, or kindness, or appreciation? Should we budget our joy, to
make sure it lasts us the rest of our lives? We find that as we share those
qualities we most desire, we create a pathway for them to return to us easily,
effortlessly, and magnified.
Have you ever seen how Laura Morton runs a chapter meeting, with joy and
love pouring forth, seemingly from every pore? Have you been inspired and
captivated by Pamela Berstler and Maureen Decombe, as they speak
passionately about our right to practice? Have you read Mary Fisher’s beautiful
and wellthoughtout newsletters and sponsor maps?
Have you delighted in listening to Amelia Lima talk about one of her many

"We have a dynamic Board and so many people contributing to make our East
Bay District as great as it is, it's difficult to single out any one. But three members
come immediately to mind worthy of mention.
Mary Fisher has contributed so much to our district, that it is hard not to
acknowledge her handiwork around us. As president of the District last year, she
was instrumental in many of our activities such as the first annual Orchard
Networking Social, and the Bob Perry workshop. She tirelessly produces our
wonderful district newsletter each month, played a tireless role in APLD’s entry
display for the San Francisco Flower and Garden Show, and has performed a
stellar job in meeting and exceeding the sponsorship goals for the CA Chapter as

Radford Art Walk in Studio City I have the distinct honor of being on the board of the Studio City Beautification
Association in the dual role of Vice President and Principessa of Design. It is a
wonderful group of people who give generously of their time in an atmosphere of
teamwork and harmony. We recently completed a project in coordination with CBS Studio Center. The Art
Walk, which incorporates 15 sculptures plus seating, stretches over a quarter of a
mile.
In order to add a decomposed granite path, it was necessary to retain the existing
berm in some areas. So was born the light wall, the element of which I am most
proud. Starting with CBS donating old studio lights to the masonry crew who
really got into the creative spirit, the wall epitomizes a collaboration of efforts. In modernizing the irrigation, we soon discovered that what was on the old
blueprints matched absolutely nothing in the ground. Plus the only person familiar
with the irrigation for over 20 years died the week before the project went out for
contractor bid. Plants were chosen that would match the water needs of the existing
Mediterranean plants, with some California natives thrown in, and those are
watered with Hunter MP Rotators. Closer to the new pathway and the curb are

CONTINUING WITH OUR COMMITMENT TO CONSTRUCTIVE
MEETINGS: The Designer Panel Discussion we held in May was an extremely
lively and enjoyable evening. We were privileged to have our sponsorship chair
Nathan Smith on hand, hosting this discussion. Nathan was so smooth and cool
in handling this task, we are wondering if he was a talk show host in a former life!
Three of our San Diego District members graciously agreed to participate in this
spirited and informative exchange of ideas; Kendra Berger of Revive Landscape,
Yvonne Savage of Savage Designs and Kate Wiseman of Sage Outdoor
Designs. These ladies openly shared with us their different business approaches
from how they set up their initial client meetings, to time management, to fun and
creative uses of technology in their daytoday practices, and the ever dreaded
topic of money! MEMBERS IN THE NEWS: The San Diego Fair, which was formerly the Del
Mar Fair for many years, is in full swing and one of our members, Kimberly
Alexander, did a bang up job with this beautiful display and use of color. This
year the fair’s theme is ‘Cosmic Spaces’, which was not an easy theme by any
means to work with in a garden. We also want to point out Kimberly’s clever use
of waterwise plants, which is a continuing matter here in San Diego County. Allee Landscape Design also pulled in the Hardscape Feature Award and the
Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s Distinguished Garden award.

behind me. I’ve returned with a quieter mind and find
myself more observant of the beauty around me as well as
the people I’m interacting with. It feels pretty good. I

Today the fragrance of preparing strawberries took me back
to childhood summer vacations with granny at the cottage. I
had chores like clipping the hedges, transplanting the
alyssum that volunteered each year, and watering from the
rain barrel with an old galvanized can. For a treat we took
an old coffee tin and gathered wild berries at the forest
edge. Ah, those days of quiet happiness when there was
time for daydreaming and spontaneity. There are times as
an adult, the demands of business take over and I forget to
keep some balance. So, I encourage you all to get your vacation on…unplug, get
inspired, get ignited whether it’s a 20‐minute daydream, or a flight up and away.
Allow yourself time to reflect on the balance in your own lives and dig deep of life. As
creative beings, we need it.

We are proud to announce that Class #8 of the Green Gardener Training Program will
begin on September 5th. Sign up today for this 10‐week class series that provides a
foundation of knowledge about ecologically‐responsible landscaping practices. Dates: Wednesdays, September 5 through November 7, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
