You can use the suggested links and resources to learn more about his life and his paintings. There are suggestions for books on the resources page. There are images of each of the featured paintings included in this ebook to use for your picture study each week. Along with picture study, I have planned follow-up activities to your picture study. There is a list of supplies needed on the resource page. A new feature of the Harmony Fine Arts art and music appreciation plans is a complete set of notebook pages to help you glean more from your art appreciation. All the pages when completed will give your child a wonderful keepsake notebook for their art portfolio. Each of the notebook pages is scheduled in the suggested plans and are explained in the follow-up activity instructions. Another new feature of these ebook plans are the inclusion of smaller art prints to use in your art appreciation. Ideas for their use are listed HERE. Music Appreciation The featured composer to go along with your art appreciation is Joseph Haydn. There are suggested CDs, online listening sources, and activities to help your family learn more about this important composer. Listening to his music as much as possible will give your family a familiarity with the sound and style of Haydn’s music. Load the music on your computer and listen during your school day, keep a CD in your car and listen when you drive around for your activities, or put some of Haydn’s music on your iPod. Although I give you suggested CDs and downloads, you can use any Haydn CD that you have in your home library or that you can borrow from the public library. Keep it simple and inexpensive. The main point is to actually take time to listen to the music with your family. There are suggested follow-up activities included with these plans and several different notebook pages to use as you listen to Haydn’s music. I have written a complete webpage on Haydn that you can view HERE. There are lots of great resources and ideas pulled together here for you to use with your family. Harmony Fine Arts Art and Music Appreciation-Resources Suggested Suggested Books on Vermeer: Getting to Know The World’s Greatest Artists-Johannes Vermeer. ISBN 0516269992 Vermeer’s Secret World-Adventures in Art. ISBN 3791339877 Vermeer: The Complete Paintings. ISBN 3836513773 Jan Vermeer Coloring Book: This unique coloring book is in the flavor of the “anticoloring book” style that allows for maximum creativity. Children are given parts of scenes and then asked to fill out the rest of the page in a way that makes sense to the child. I love these sorts of coloring books that allow more than filling in the lines. Suggested Resources for Joseph Haydn: The Best of Haydn ASIN B0000014HJ All suggested pieces of music in these plans are included on this one CD. The Merry Little Peasant ISBN 1933573007 (suggested ages 8-12) Beethoven and Haydn Companion CD to The Merry Little Peasant ISBN 1933573023 This book and companion CD are an excellent living book selection for your children. The CD contains all the music referenced in the The Merry Little Peasant as well as coloring pages and sheet music. The Story of Haydn ASIN B000001KD1 This CD has a narrative story of Joseph Haydn and several complete selections of his music to listen to after learning more about Haydn’s life. (suggested for all ages) I also have included lots of suggested mp3 downloads on my Joseph Haydn page for you to preview and order for around $1 each. Wikipedia has some of Haydn’s music that you can listen to for free in the Haydn article. Steps for General Picture Study 1. Choose the painting to be viewed. There are prints included in this ebook as well as links to view the artwork online. 2. Have the child sit quietly and look at the painting. 3. After a time of looking, hide the painting from view and ask your child to tell you what he remembers about the painting. 4. That is the basic idea of picture study but if your child has trouble getting started, you can prompt them with a few open-ended questions. What colors do you see? What objects can you see in the painting? What is the story being told in the painting? Is the work of art true-to-life? How does the painting make you feel? Do you like this piece of art? Why or why not? 5. Optional: Share the paintings title and the artist’s name. This website is filled with lots of great information and once you choose a painting to look at, see the box on the left side for additional activities available for each piece of artwork. I let my high school age boys explore this website on their own. Here is a short biography of Johannes Vermeer you can print out for your children. If you would like some additional links to view Vermeer’s paintings, try Olga’s Gallery or Art in the Picture. Please preview any websites before sharing them with your children. The Garden of Praise also has a wonderful slideshow of Vermeer’s paintings. Click Me! Coloring Pages for Vermeer Here are some great coloring pages that you can click and print to go along with your study of Vermeer. If you need some ideas about how to get started with coloring pages as part of your art appreciation course, you can read how I have incorporated them in our homeschool at this link: Dover Coloring Pages-Using Coloring Books as a Tool in Your Art Appreciation These are highly detailed coloring pages so feel free to use the original painting only as a guide and allow your children to interpret the painting in their own way. I would suggest using colored pencils or thin markers to complete these pages for your art notebook. The Art of Painting—Nice one to print out, color, and cut out to put in your art notebook. (See the notebook page for this painting. There is a spot to attach it.) The Milkmaid-Another one to print out, color, and cut out for your notebook. (See the notebook page for this painting. There is a spot to attach it.) The Geographer-Another coloring page for you to print, color, cut and add to your notebook. (See the notebook page for this painting. Once again, you can attach the coloring page for convenience.) How To Use the Small Prints Included in This Ebook Page One and Page Two Print the images on photo paper, cut out, and use on your notebook pages. Print the images onto cardstock and laminate to use for your picture study if you do not wish to use the larger images. Use the images to memorize the names of the paintings. Use the smaller prints to compare features of Vermeer’s paintings. Short Follow-Up Activities to the Paintings Suggested in These Plans 1. Girl With A Pearl Earring: Complete your picture study and then leave the image out as a reference. Use this lesson plan to make your own watercolor version of this masterpiece. You can color the Vermeer notebook page cover with the image of this painting if you wish. 2. The Art of Painting: There is a lot to say about this painting during your picture study. This week you may wish to read the online biography for Vermeer or the book suggested on the resources list. There is a coloring page to print, color, and attach to the accompanying notebook page featuring this painting. There is an optional series of videos on YouTube (BBC), The Art of Painting part 1. I recommend you watch the first part and then you can watch any of the rest of the parts as you have time over the next nine weeks. After each part plays on YouTube, you will find the next part linked...remember to preview. 3. Woman Holding a Balance: After your picture study time, you can use this link to go more in depth looking at this painting if you chose: Optional In-Depth Study. This week you need to sketch this painting (or print it out and adhere it) on the accompanying notebook page. List the colors you see in the painting and then check off the items you notice for the list at the bottom of the notebook page. You might want to reuse this notebook page with other Vermeer paintings. 4. The Music Lesson: After you finish your picture study you may wish to watch this Video from National Gallery of Art. This week you are going to draw your very own Vermeer using oil pastels on a sheet of pastel paper and this lesson plan, How Very Vermeer. If you haven’t had a chance to click around on Essential Vermeer yet, this might be a perfect way to introduce this lesson. Look at as many of Vermeer’s paintings as you have time and then get started on your own Vermeer-style painting. You can also choose to copy the painting with colored pencils onto the accompanying notebook page instead. 5. Girl With the Red Hat: Vermeer’s Color Palette: Read about the color choices that Vermeer had and then use the right-hand box on THIS page, complete the Vermeer’s Colors page included in this ebook. Optional video from the National Gallery of Art. For extra information on pigments, see this website: Pigments Through the Ages. Short Follow-Up Activities (continued) 6. The Milkmaid: After your picture study, you can follow up by printing and completing the coloring page provided. Once again you can cut it out and adhere it on the notebook page. You may wish to make your own version of this painting by drawing with oil pastels a woman with a yellow and blue dress. Or you may wish to set up a still-life with a few of the things that Vermeer included in this painting: a bowl, fruit, pitcher, bread, tablecloth. 7. Lady Writing a Letter: This week use the two prints on the accompanying notebook page as a way to compare two Vermeer paintings. Use your observation skills and write what you see that is the same and what is different about these two paintings. Remember the elements of a Vermeer painting like color, objects, position, lighting, clothing, etc (View the prints of these paintings on the provided pages in the ebook or online at the links from the resource pages.) Portrait for zooming in. Zoom in on the lady’s face and see what you can notice that is similar to other Vermeer paintings. You can print another copy of the What Makes A Vermeer A Vermeer notebook pages and complete it for Lady Writing A Letter if you wish. 8. The Geographer: After your picture study, click over to Essential Vermeer to learn more about the objects in this painting. Print out the coloring page for this painting and complete it with colored pencils and then adhere it to the notebook page. Complete the second notebook page for The Geographer and record details you observed in your close examination on Essential Vermeer. 9. The Lacemaker: After your picture study this week you can watch this optional video on YouTube.com Salvador Dali’s version of The Lacemaker. Please preview the video before showing to your children. (Dali paints a surrealist version of The Lacemaker that is fun to discuss with your children.) This week make sure to complete the Johannes Vermeer biography notebook page listing the paintings you have viewed as part of this study and things you have learned about Vermeer. Complete any other notebook pages and activities you may have left to finish. Gather all your Vermeer notebook pages and admire all your hard work. Girl With A Pearl Earring. c. 1665. Oil on Canvas.
