Come Home To - Home Craft Days
Come Home To . . .
The Music
Southwest Virginia is immersed in rich,
musical talent. Experience the quiet, soulful
strum of the autoharp, the ringing melody of
the banjo and the high, lonesome vocals of
a mountian tune. The endearing harmonies
and haunting ballads of our mountain music
are regarded as national treasures.
The Mountains
The Food
Remember the smell of grannie’s kitchen?
The taste of hot homemade biscuits and
warm apple butter? The comfort of soup
beans and cornbread and fried pie for
dessert. Home Craft Days is a food lover’s
feast. There are no fancy finger foods here.
Just good, downhome cooking made fresh
from the heart.
The Crafts
Traditional Appalachian craftsmanship
demonstrates the incredible innovativeness
of past generations to not only live off the
land, but also create beauty out of everyday
necessities. Quilting, caneing, weaving,
milling and more are demonstrated and
displayed by local artisans.
The Culture
Since 1972, Home Craft Days has served
as a focal event celebrating the unique
aspects of Appalachian culture. Artisans
and musicians demonstrate the traditions
of the past, emphasizing the importance
of preserving the heritage of our region for
future generations.
The campus of Mountain Empire Community
College comes alive in mid-October with
vibrant reds, yellows, and golds the
surrounding mountains. Held during the
peak of fall, Home Craft Days is the perfect
time to relish the splendors of the season
and experience the unparalleled beauty of
Southwest Virginia.
