Al Khamsa Advisory Council Meeting
Time: 9:00 AM - 10 AM
Place: South Sisters Main Hall, Deschutes County Fairgrounds and Expo Center
Agenda: Vote preference for President of Al Khamsa; Elect three members to the
Al Khamsa Board of Delegates; Vote on Roster addition, Memorial for Jay Gormley,
Julia Byfield, Awards
Roster Proposal for Vote at 2009 Convention: This proposal was approved by the
AK Board of Directors and those present and voting at the annual meeting in
2008, and is now being presented for its confirming vote. This is a difficult
process, and it is meant to be difficult in order to protect the Al Khamsa
Roster. This is an unusual Roster Proposal, in that there are very likely none
of these horses present in otherwise eligible pedigrees in North America at the
current time. There is a precedent. In 1986, Al Khamsa approved a proposal that,
for the record, contained horses that had been included in the Blue Catalog or
were otherwise well documented but were lost in North America by the time Al
Khamsa began in 1975. Thus the Rogers imports from Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, the
Raswan/Zietarski imports to Poland and Hungary in 1931, the Davenport import
*Euphrates and the Blunt import Meshura (BLT) were all officially given Al
Khamsa status. Since 1986, some imports and new additions voted to the Roster
have brought some of these horses back into representation in modern Al Khamsa
pedigrees. The Database Committee, under the leadership of Sara Jones, is
working to identify and catalog everything that ever was an Al Khamsa horse, and
was then lost. It is a vast job, but when completed, will enable the serious
researcher to identify the Al Khamsa percentage in a given modern Arabian horse,
something that is not possible now.
Jeanne Craver has moved that the following Babolna-bred horses be approved as
ancestors of Al Khamsa horses:
3 Siglavy Bagdady VI
*238 Kuhaylan Zaid 8
*240 Koheilan VIII-5
*Sigleilan
There are otherwise eligible descendants from 3 Siglavy Bagdady VI or her
parents in Europe, in combination with Al Khamsa lines. The three imports to the
USA are gone, and are identified "for the honor of the thing."

GULASTRA
The 2009 Al Khamsa/CMK Symposium is honoring the great American sire Gulastra, a chestnut
stallion born in 1924 and bred by the Maynesboro Stud in Berlin, New Hampshire.
Gulastra was of 100% Blunt breeding, a son of the Crabbet import *Astraled (Mesaoud X Queen
of Sheba) and out of the mare Gulnare who herself was the daughter of two Crabbet imports,
*Rodan and *Ghazala. Gulastra’s pedigree reflected the Blunts’ preference to blend their directfrom-the-desert sources with horses acquired in Egypt from the stud of Ali Pasha Sherif. Of particular note Gulastra was line bred to the Ali Pasha Sherif sire Aziz II, having four crosses to this
chestnut sire of two important horses to the Blunt program, Mesaoud and Bint Helwa.
Gulastra’s influence as an American sire started off with a bang with the birth of his first three
foals at Maynesboro when he was a 4-year-old. All three colts—Rahas, Nusi and Kolastra— would
become successful sires. Gulastra sired 128 foals in his lifetime, which was in itself remarkable
for an Arabian stallion of his era. With the dispersal of the Maynesboro Stud in 1935, Gulastra and
his son Rahas were purchased by William Randolph Hearst and shipped to Hearst’s famous ranch
at San Simeon, California. Gulastra was at the Hearst Ranch for three breeding seasons. Hearst
apparently preferred to keep the taller Rahas and sold Gulastra to the Travelers Rest Arabian
Stud in Tennessee where his remarkable career continued in the 1940s. By the early 1950s Gulastra returned to California under the ownership of Howard Marks. The sire’s final destination was
back to the East coast when Marks leased him to Bazy Tankersley’s Al-Marah Farm in Washington,
DC.
Gulastra’s last foals were born at Al-Marah in 1955. He died there at age 30.
Gulastra stood 14.2 hands and he was known for being a highly spirited “red head.” He leaves
descent in both Al Khamsa and CMK Arabians today. He was especially influential to the foundation of the Doyle straight Blunt horses. His headstone is at Robbi Pruitt’s Canyonside Ranch near
Redmond, OR, not far from where the 2009 AK/CMK Symposium is being held. His headstone was
a gift to Robbi Pruitt from Howard Marks as she was the last owner of Gulastra’s youngest son
ROH Beta Gulastra.

Cherlyn Ranch
At Cherlyn Ranch, our breeding goal is to
breed horses with these qualities;
1.Disposition 2.Soundness 3.Conformation
4.using Ability and if I can get Beauty also,
that is a bonus. I try to preserve the old bloodlines, and am not a FAD breeder. I have used
my horses for trail, endurance, showing, and
as handicapped mounts for children. But my
favorite thing is to go horse camping.
