LOVE, AND ALL THAT JAZZ!
I
f you like cool jazz harmonies and
songs about love presented in relaxed
cabaret style surroundings, this concert
is definitely for you! ‘Love and All That
Jazz!’ is Counterpoint Vocal Ensemble’s
next public performance, to be held on
Saturday 13th June at 7pm.
The program features old standards like
Skylark, Dancing Cheek to Cheek, Embraceable
You, Georgia On My Mind, September in the
Rain, Ain’t Misbehavin’ and Begin the Beguine,
all expertly crafted for small choir by some
of America’s foremost vocal jazz arrangers.
While most of the program is sung a cappella,
local Conservatorium-trained pianist Jennifer
Wakeling will be accompanying some pieces.
Counterpoint Vocal Ensemble is an auditioned
mixed-voice group of about sixteen, ably led
by well-known Redcliffe conductor and musical
director Lesley Brown.
The group specialises in high quality a
cappella (unaccompanied) vocal music. Since its
establishment nearly 28 years ago, the ensemble
has developed an extensive and varied
repertoire ranging from Renaissance sacred
classics to contemporary vocal jazz numbers,
4
June 2015
presenting many public concerts and recitals in
and around Brisbane.
If you’d like to sit with your friends, you can
arrange for groups of up to seven people per
table, provided you let the organisers know well
before the concert date.
From time to time there are vacancies for
new members, and Lesley is always keen to
hear from potential singers with good blending
voices, the ability to sing in tune and hold a vocal
line without instrumental accompaniment, and
a genuine love of a cappella choral music. If
you’re interested in joining the group, please give
Lesley a call on 3284 3688 or e-mail browniw5@
optusnet.com.au to arrange an audition.

Pianist/comedian David Scheel has made a
speciality out of making fun of music, both classical
and not-so-classical. So much so that he is now
regarded as arguably the finest musical humorist in
the world, in particular thanks to his international hit
show, ‘Don’t Shoot Me, I’m Only the Piano Player’.
Now, by public demand, David is back with the long
awaited sequel, ‘Don’t Shoot Me, I’m STILL only the
Piano Player!’ on Sunday 21st June at the Redcliffe

There will also be hilarious – and true – stories
of music’s greatest eccentrics, from Bach and
Beethoven, through to Lady Gaga and Justin
Beiber.
Described by the San Francisco Chronicle
as “the only show in town that can satisfy lovers
of classical music and stand-up comedy alike”,
and with David internationally acclaimed as the
successor to the legendary Victor Borge, this
concert is a must for anyone who wants to hear
beautiful music and laugh themselves silly into the
bargain.

This is another wonderful blend of piano and
comedy, full of lots of new material, including
Theme and Variations on a popular mobile phone
ring tone, a cutting edge, thought provoking (and
very funny) look at how computers rule our lives,
entitled When Harry the Mac met Sally the PC,
plus perennial favourites such as David’s classic
“translation” of the lyrics of Waltzing Matilda, all
delivered in an amazing range of comic voices and
accents. Plus, of course, beautiful piano music
revealing David’s skills as a serious concert pianist.
And its not just the classics! In this new show, David
also offers up brilliant arrangements of Broadway
hits, and 2015 being the centenary of the Gallipoli
landing, his wonderful medley of the most popular
tunes from the two world wars has already attracted
much critical acclaim, even though it only recently
premiered.

MADNESS IN THE MARKET
Ian McLachlan
B
ecoming a landlord is definitely not
for the faint hearted, however if you
choose the right property, the right tenants
and put a great property management
agency in place, buying an investment
home can be an excellent choice.
Here are some tips to get you started and to
make the process a bit easier:
1.Get your finances in order
There are plenty of online calculators that can
help you assess your finances. But it really can be
as simple as a pen and paper, and making a list
of your assets, income and expenses, ensuring
you have a solid long-term income with proof of
savings.
2. Make a plan
What type of property is in your budget? Will
it be a house that requires work? Will it be a unit
with body corporate fees? Is it near by or out of the
area you live in? Is it in an area that has a demand
for rental properties? Are you a good negotiator
to be able to buy the property at the best possible
price, or will you ask someone you trust to help

you? These are some questions you may need to
consider.
3. Have a pre-approval and stick to the budget
Being pre-approved can be one of your best
negotiating tools. Knowing how much you have to
spend and the time frame in which your finances
will be available to complete the transaction could
help secure the property you want to purchase with
minimal conditions on a contract.
4. Be educated in your market & stay focused
Know the market you plan to purchase in.
There are so many tools available online to help
you assess the viability of the area and property
investment. Drop in and talk to your local agent.
A good customer focused agent will always
have time to answer questions you might have.
And more importantly, stay focused; it is easy to
become overwhelmed and wrapped up in the hard
sell of a “Great Opportunity”.

MORETON BAY
BOAT CLUB
Who would have thought a high flying career in finance,
New Zealand’s Justice Department and a passion for
landscaping would have landed Cecilia Foster the role of
Moreton Bay Boat Club’s Head Chef?
Cecilia, a university graduate of banking and finance,
left behind a lucrative career in Christchurch in search of a
quieter life to spend more time with her family.
She applied for a job with her local café as a kitchen
hand. After three months the café nurtured her innate
talent to identify flavours in food and trained her to
become head chef.
Photos by Paul Neil
During her time as an accountant, Cecilia frequented
restaurants and appreciated fine dining. She would
emulate the cuisine, and could source ingredients to
recreate the dish purely on her taste and being able to
identify flavours.
“We go out every day and try different food and then I
go home and try to cook it myself. If I have Indian, I would
go to the Indian section of the store and say I’ll have one
of that, one of that and one of that, mix the ingredients
together and play around. And I get the taste,” says
Cecilia.
As well as possessing a natural culinary talent, Cecilia
focuses her efforts on service and presentation ensuring
the customer enjoys the whole dining experience. You
seldom come across a head chef that personally invites
feedback from diners during her dinner service.

Cecilia and her entire service team at the Moreton Bay
Boat Club are committed to continuing the long-standing
tradition of great service and fine dining that the club has
offered for over 50 years.
“We have cuisines from all over the world here and
plenty of fresh local seafood,” said Cecilia.
The picturesque view of the Glass House Mountains
offers a delightful backdrop to compliment a delicious meal.

Love Hand-Made Markets
Half Lever Espresso
PIPS PROMISE
If you’re anything like me, you can’t start your
market expedition without first having a coffee.
Fortunately, one of the very first things you will
see upon entering Love Hand-Made Markets
is Tim Phillips and his coffee van. Tim is at the
ready making fresh, great tasting coffee.
Phillipa Trevarthen can be found every month
manning this delicious stall. She has been at the
markets since June last year. She makes hot
chocolate sticks in a huge range of 11 flavours
as well as bath bombs, handmade from essential
oils. Her favourite hot chocolate stick flavour is
orange, which is made from real orange zest.
She says the best part of the hot chocolate is
licking the stick after you have stirred it through.
A decadent treat to be enjoyed in the bath with a
relaxing bath bomb.

Cadets aboard clubhouse
renovation
M
oreton Bay Regional Council has
completed restoration works on the
TS Moreton Bay naval cadet clubhouse
at Woody Point – and the club’s young
recruits are all aboard.
Moreton Bay Regional Council Division Six
Councillor Koliana Winchester said the $150,000
project re-established the Crockatt Park site as a
clubhouse for the cadets and storage space for
their naval equipment including boats and canoes.
“After many years of use as a boatshed and
clubhouse, inspections identified areas that were
in need of maintenance,” Cr Winchester said.
“Repairs to the building’s exterior and interior,
such as new treated timber, partial reroofing and a
new balcony, will allow the club to continue to use
the site while maintaining the building’s structural
integrity and appearance.
Cr Winchester said community groups and
organisations such as TS Moreton Bay were the
backbone of our community.
“TS Moreton Bay gives budding sailors
34
June 2015
the opportunity to learn the ropes of naval life,
instilling important leadership, teamwork and life
skills.
“That’s why council continues to invest in
community infrastructure and community groups
like TS Moreton Bay.”
TS Moreton Bay Commanding Officer
Kim Seddon said the restoration project was
completed in time for the group’s Annual
Inspection on May 17.
“Our group has a proud history of producing
astute young men and women ready for both
civilian and naval life,” SBLT Seddon said.
“The renovated clubhouse will give our young
sailors a dedicated space to interact, grow and
complete important naval training expected of our
young cadets.”
TS Moreton Bay parades every Friday from
7pm to 10pm, and those interested in participating
or finding out more are encouraged to contact
Commanding Officer Kim Seddon by emailing

TAX TIPS
Lisa Clarke
T
he end of the financial year is upon
us and our minds should be turning
to any last minute tax planning. It is
important to know exactly what you
can claim and ensure that you have
the proper records to fully support any
deductions.
Deductions must be supported with a tax
invoice, receipt or other documentation. This can
either be a paper or electronic copy.
There are specific deductions related to the
industry you are employed in such as union fees,
trade journals, memberships and registrations.
However there are many general deductions
the majority of taxpayers are able to claim.
Travel expenses to visit your accountant to
prepare your return are deductible. You will
need to keep records of kilometres travelled and
incidental costs such as parking fees. Support the
community and make a taxable donation over $2.
There are various strategies that can reduce
your tax liability. Think about bringing forward
expenses into the current financial year. For
example: deductible insurance premiums paid
monthly. Why not pay the balance prior to 30 June
2015 to maximise your deduction?
Investment property owners can bring forward
any planned repairs. Talk to your accountant
36
June 2015
about the benefits of obtaining a tax depreciation
schedule. Capital items under $300 can be
claimed in full in the year of purchase.
You might like to consider salary sacrificing
your wages in to your superannuation fund up to
the contribution cap. Ask your accountant about
your eligibility for tax rebates such as a spouse
super co-contribution.
There are also many tax minimisation
strategies for the self employed or business tax
payers. Think about deferring invoicing until
after 30 June 2015. On the other side bring
forward business related expenses into the
current financial year. As recently announced
in the budget, capital purchases made after the
12th May 2015 for less than $20,000 are fully
deductible in the year of purchase for small
businesses. Pay any outstanding super before the
30th June 2015.
Businesses should review their debtors’ ledgers
and write off any bad debts. Asset registers should
also be reviewed and scrap any obsolete items of
plant and equipment.
Talk to your accountant for the best advice
relevant to your situation.

he RASart Exhibition of Excellence is
the premier exhibition of the Redcliffe
Art Society, which has been held over
the past 50 years. It is a juried exhibition
which is open to all members of the
Redcliffe Art Society. The winner of First
Prize Overall is invited to exhibit in the
annual Fifteen Artists Exhibition at the
Redcliffe City Art Gallery.
In 2014, the First Prize Overall was proudly
sponsored by the Margate Community Bank

Branch of Bendigo Bank. The prize was won by
Nan Dingle for her oil painting “The Source”.
Branch manager Matthew Beswick says,
“Profits from the Margate Community Bank
Branch of Bendigo Bank are reinvested directly
back into the Redcliffe Peninsula Community
and we are absolutely delighted to be the Major
Sponsor of the RASart Exhibition once again in
2015. We recognise the significant contribution
of the Redcliffe Art Society in our local community
and have proudly provided them with thousands
of dollars in funding in recent times.”

Traditionally, a painting is raffled during the
exhibition with proceeds going to the Redcliffe
Art Society. This year, Natalia Balo, a member of
the Redcliffe Art Society, has generously donated
a watercolour ‘Major Mitchell’s Cockatoo’. Dr.
Natalia Balo is a contemporary award-winning
figurative artist, specialising in portraiture and
wildlife painting, and an author of “Bird Anatomy
for Artists”. Raffle tickets will be available from
the Redcliffe City Art Gallery for the duration of the
exhibition.
The Society has always worked for the pursuit
of excellence in art, while encouraging artists
to enjoy practising their work and learning
new skills. The members enjoy daily classes,
workshops conducted by national tutors and a
well-maintained library. It provides the means
for artists to exhibit and grow through sharing
the experience of exploring art practice together.
Long may the “Redcliffe Art Society” flourish.

Outdoors
Tackling Moreton Bay!
Mark Templeton
W
e will have a few species in the
bucket over the next few months but
the main species being chased will be the
Moreton Bay Snapper!
With the cooler weather really starting to set in, we
will see the local Snapper start to make themselves
more available around our local reefs and through
the Brisbane River areas.
As with Tailor preparation, we need to make sure
that we are geared up; rods checked, reels checked
and serviced if needed, and the all-important tackle
is up to speed.
There will be a few first time Snapper fishos out
there and it does not matter if you are on a kayak
or a tinny, take your time around our reefs and
waterways as there are few hazards under the water
which will ruin a great fishing trip.
For those that have not chased Snapper before,
the best thing we can say is “keep it simple”.
Basically, a 2-4kg or a 3-6kg rod is ample and a reel
between 2500 – 4000 will get the job done. Braid
around the 10 – 15lb or Mono line between 15 – 20lb
will do the job for you and help put fish in the esky.
A few of us use both Mono and Braided lines but
this comes down to personal preference; one does
not normally fish better than the other. If you are just
getting into it, I recommend using a robust Braid like
44
June 2015
“Fins”. If you want, stick with quality Mono line like
Schneider or Super 100 and then you may upgrade
when you are ready.
What do I use - bait or lures? Well, Snapper will
take just about anything; hard-bodies, plastics and
even jigs like the Lucanus Jig. Trolling 90mm hardbodies work very well and “dead sticking” plastics
and jigs can also be very effective.
When bait fishing, I do like to relax with a good
strip of mullet fillet, gar fillet or even a couple of
whole hardy heads on a 3/0 Tru-Turn or laser hook.
Depending on the run I would normally start with a
“0” – “2” ball sinker and adjust from there. Where
possible I use as little lead as possible and drift line
the bait.
An important trick to remember is to fish as
quietly as possible. Don’t fly in at full noise and stop;
approach your grounds at the idle. If anchoring,
“lower” the anchor under control rather than just
throwing it in. Be as quiet as you were when you
broke curfew and were trying to sneak back in the
house!!
If you would like more Fishing Tips or you would
like us to cover particular topics, visit:
www.tackleland.com.au and drop us a line.
Enjoy your time with the family and “Maintain the
Passion”.

Community
A word from our representatives
Luke Howarth MP
About 15,000
Redcliffe pensioners
with modest assets
will see their pensions
increase by around $30
per fortnight as part of
the Commonwealth
Government’s plans for
fairer access to a more
sustainable pension.
A ‘Families Package’
will support families on the Peninsula who struggle to
access affordable child care when working, studying
or looking for work. This includes $840 million over
two years for preschool programs to ensure Australian
families can continue to access up to 600 hours of
preschool education a year in 2016 and 2017.
Our small business package includes a small
business tax cut, to boost investment and unleash the
entrepreneurial spirit of our local small businesses.
These are just some of the policies the Coalition
Government has recently announced. I am happy to
take any questions about the 2015-16 Federal Budget,
so please contact me at luke.howarth.mp@aph.gov.au
or call my office on 3284 8008.
Yvette D’Ath MP
It was heartening to
see our local community
support those affected
by the recent devastating
wild storms. The State
Government moved
quickly to provide
emergency financial
assistance and
Community Recovery
teams and nongovernment partners worked tirelessly to help families
get back on their feet.
As Minister for Training and Skills I was pleased to
open the first round of the new Skilling Queenslanders
for Work initiative. I am passionate about generating
jobs and encourage Redcliffe organisations wanting to
find out more about Skilling Queenslanders for Work
funding opportunities to register their interest quickly, as
round one applications close on 19 June 2015.
I will be hosting a free Seniors Afternoon Tea at
the CWA Hall in Redcliffe Parade, Redcliffe on 26
June 2015 from 2:00pm to 3:30pm and will have an
informative guest speaker on the day.

It is wonderful
to see TS Moreton
Bay return to
their Hornibrook
Esplanade, Woody
Point home. The
group began
operations on
the site after the
Humpybong Yacht
Club transferred the property lease and existing
clubhouse facility to TS Moreton Bay in 1980. The
original clubhouse, a relocated house, was first
positioned on the site by the Yacht Club in 1946.
For the past 18 months, TS Moreton Bay
have been parading at the Redcliffe State High

School whilst maintenance on the building was
undertaken. Council was pleased to be able to
fund these important restoration works.
GIVIT is accepting cash donations for the
Moreton Bay Region flood disaster. To support
recovery efforts, visit www.givit.org.au. 100% of
funds go towards purchasing items for affected
residents.
GIVIT always, wherever possible, purchases
items from local providers to support the local
economy as it recovers.
If you or family, friends or neighbours have
homes that have been inundated, and you have
not been visited by Council representatives,

Vintage Yacht Regatta: Shorncliffe
T
he Vintage Yacht Regatta is one of
the best events on the Queensland
Cruising Yacht Club calendar and not
just for those who are sailing. With a live
jazz band and a roaring fire, Saturday
evening will be a great night for visitors
to experience the Club, as will Sunday
morning when you can bookend your
breakfast with a wander around the
marina and lawns to enjoy the spectacular
boats on show.
A fleet of around 40 of South East
Queensland’s finest vintage yachts are expected
to be on show during the Queen’s Birthday
weekend (6th and 7th June). “This event is a
highlight of the classic yachting sailing calendar in
Queensland and attracts a large fleet of beautifully
turned out vessels from yesteryear,” commented
Regatta Director Nigel Statham.
The Regatta, also familiarly referred to as
‘The Gaffers’, is not only open to Sailing Yachts;
skippers of sailing dinghies, motor boats or those
who would prefer not to race are also welcome to
join in the event and participate in the Concours
d’Elégance competition. Berthing for all vessels
is free from the Friday evening throughout the
weekend.
48
June 2015
On the Saturday and Sunday, two races are
held each day with a short break in between. The
start area is positioned close into shore to allow
spectators a good view of the racing.
The first two days make up the Regatta series
with the main prize-giving being held on Sunday
evening. The four races are also the culmination
of the Moreton Bay Classics’ Annual Point Score
Series. The series is based on three Classic
Events that begin in October each year. With five
races already run and two discards allowed, a
good result from the four races at the ‘Gaffers’ will
be the key to a great overall result.
On the third day of the Regatta, there is a
pursuit race around the bay with the slowest boats
starting first. The finish line is near the Coffee Pots
to allow competitors to head straight to their home
port once they cross the finish line.
The Regatta also features a Concours
d’Elégance competition. Judging takes place
over the course of the weekend and awards are
given out in a number of categories. With so many
achingly beautiful vessels to choose from, judge
and local icon Brian Hutchinson has his work cut out.
Yacht owners and spectators interested in the
event can find full information at the Regatta’s
website. Go to qcyc.com.au and follow the links.
