Message from Carolyn
In addition to presentations at the Gallery, the
MacLaren website features Artwork of the
Month and virtual shows that highlight and
contextualize select works from our collection.
The MacLaren Art Centre is creating a vibrant
cultural legacy for our community. Our rich
cultural heritage embraces the building in which
we are housed. A 1917 Carnegie public library
with an award-winning addition by Siamak
Hariri of Hariri Pontarini Architects completed in
2001, our centre has become an architectural
landmark in downtown Barrie.
As an art museum, the MacLaren houses a
growing collection of over 27,000 works of art.
This cultural legacy is held in trust for future
generations to come. Our top priorities are to
enhance the ways we conserve, manage, build,
document and animate this collection. A yearround programme of exhibitions and educational
activities engages up to 50,000 visitors annually,
deepening their understanding and enjoyment of
these artworks.
We are committed to growing our collection
in a meaningful way and to increasing its
access, both intellectually and physically.
Recent acquisitions to our collection include
photographs by artists Joseph Hartman
and Arnaud Maggs, drawn from their solo
shows at the MacLaren and on view in the
coming seasons. Through initiatives such as
MacLarenArtOnline, we have documented
hundreds of artworks in our holdings and made
them available online, expanding our outreach,
collection loans and exhibition collaborations.
This year, the MacLaren Art Centre is the proud
recipient of the York Wilson Endowment Award
from the Canada Council for the Arts, a major
purchase prize that enables Canadian art
museums to acquire original works of art by
living Canadian painters and sculptors. With
this award, we acquired Tautology by Duane
Linklater, an artist of national significance
who exhibited at the MacLaren last year after
winning the much-coveted Sobey Award. Given
the challenging economic climate, acquisition
budgets for many public art galleries are nominal
at best. We are indebted to the Canada Council
for this very generous support.
Barrie has come to represent itself by the Spirit
Catcher, a public sculpture by artist Ron Baird
created in the image of a thunderbird and the
first artwork accessioned into our collection.
Tautology is a dynamic, contemporary
interpretation of this traditional Aboriginal motif,
the legendary thunderbird, conceived by Duane
Linklater in neon. We hope this extraordinary
addition to our collection will find particular
resonance for our community.
Visit the MacLaren this season and share the
legacy!
Warm regards,
Carolyn Bell Farrell

Reception: Thursday, December 4, 7 to 9 pm
In Your Words is a multifaceted installation inspired by the life and writing of Karen Blixen (pen
name Isak Dinesen), acclaimed author of Out of Africa. First exhibited at the Karen Blixen Museet
in Denmark, this project explores notions of identity, language and translation. Artists Buhl and
Fernandes enter a dialogue with Blixen’s oeuvre while reflecting on their own personal histories of
travel, migration and belonging through a post-colonial narrative. In Barrie, Buhl and Fernandes
expand In Your Words with a new series of collages, a collection of visual notes introducing the
complex life and persona of Blixen.
Nanna Debois Buhl (MFA, Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, 2006) is a Danish visual artist based
in New York and Copenhagen. She has exhibited her work internationally in the United States,
Sweden, Italy and Denmark and has work in the collections of the National Museum of Photography,
Copenhagen and the Museum for Contemporary Art, Roskilde, Denmark. Brendan Fernandes (MFA,
University of Western Ontario, 2005) is a Canadian visual artist based between Toronto and New York.
He has exhibited his work widely across North America and at the Third Guangzhou Triennial, China.
His work has been collected by numerous institutions including the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and the
National Gallery of Canada.

This season, the MacLaren brings together two bodies of work by artists Rhonda Weppler and
Trevor Mahovsky, who share a collaborative practice. Veneers offers a thematic survey of sculptural
works that focus on veneer as a poetically charged category of surface. Incorporating a variety
of commercial and home-made veneers stripped from found objects, Weppler and Mahovsky are
attentive to how cultural values are encoded in the gloss and finish of everyday objects.
Complementing Veneers is Walks, a series of photographic works capturing excursions the artists
have taken in cities as diverse as Tokyo, New York and Sydney. Weppler and Mahovsky continue their
playful exploration of material culture by documenting purchased and scavenged objects laid out in
the order in which they were collected, captured in brightly coloured circles on their hotel room floors.
Rhonda Weppler (MFA, University of British Columbia, 1998) and Trevor Mahovsky (MFA, University
of British Columbia, 1998) have worked in collaboration since 2004. They have participated in solo
exhibitions throughout Canada, the United States, and in London, UK. Their work is held in significant
public collections, including the Vancouver Art Gallery and the National Gallery of Canada.

This new multimedia project by Ramara–based artist Matt Macintosh features altered photographs
from the Simcoe County Archive alongside sculptural works created from these new images. Type
and Token is a meditation on the emergence of culture as a response to trade within the history of
Barrie. Macintosh notes, “I use abstraction as a means to sever, but not destroy, the attachments
between ideas and things.” Taking as his starting point the immediate site of the MacLaren Art Centre
at the time of European settlement, Macintosh traces the appropriation and emergence of trade and
river routes throughout the landscape of Simcoe County suggesting parallels to early modern painting
and Western conventions for producing knowledge.
For the past decade, Dominique Rey has been documenting Les Filles de la Croix, a disappearing
Catholic order of nuns. Her investigations into the order began in her hometown of Winnipeg,
and have since taken her to Brazil, Argentina and France, where she captures the quiet lives and
intimate spaces of the sisters in a variety of media. Under the Rose Arch draws from this long-term,
comprehensive project and—in line with Rey’s previous artistic endeavours—creates a unique
platform to represent female subjects devoid of traditional gender, race and class stereotypes.
Matt Macintosh is a graduate of the Master of Visual Studies programme at the University of Toronto.
His work has been shown in exhibitions in Toronto, Kingston, Vancouver and New York City. He is
currently the curator at the Orillia Museum of Art and History.
Dominique Rey (MFA, Bard College, 2007; MFA, Transart Institute, 2011) is a multidisciplinary artist
whose work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, with recent presentations in Lethbridge,
Winnipeg, Montréal, Toronto and Calgary. Her work is in the collections of the National Gallery
of Canada, Winnipeg Art Gallery, Province of Manitoba and Wedge Collection. Rey was named
Winnipeg’s Visual Arts Ambassador for the 2010 Cultural Capital of Canada.

Duane Linklater
Tautology
November 8, 2014 to March 15, 2015
Molson Community Gallery
Reception: Thursday, December 4, 7 to 9 pm
Duane Linklater (b. 1976) is Omaskêko Cree from Moose Cree First Nation on James Bay. Winner of the
2013 Sobey Art Award, Canada’s pre-eminent award for contemporary art, Linklater has participated in
exhibitions across North America. He currently resides in North Bay, Ontario.
Tautology (2011-2013) is a suite of five neon sculptures depicting the thunderbird, a legendary creature
in various North American Indigenous cultures. Linklater appropriated this specific thunderbird image
from Norval Morrisseau’s seminal painting, Androgyny (1983). By reanimating the bird in neon—a
contemporary, commercial material—Linklater inserts the traditional icon into contemporary discourse. In
line with Linklater’s previous work, Tautology explores notions of translation, repetition and symbolism to
critically examine ideas of authorship and cultural appropriation.
Arnaud Maggs
Scrapbook
November 8, 2014 to March 15, 2015
Joan Lehman Gallery
Reception: Thursday, December 4, 7 to 9 pm
Joseph Hartman
Return
March 19 to June 28, 2015
Joan Lehman Gallery
Reception: Thursday, March 19, 7 to 9 pm
Joseph Hartman was born in Barrie and raised, largely, in Lafontaine, Ontario. He has had solo shows
at the MacLaren Art Centre (Return, 2012), the Campus Gallery in Barrie and Stephen Bulger Gallery
in Toronto, which represents his work. His photographs are held in numerous private and public
collections, as well as at the Art Gallery of Hamilton where he currently resides.
Hartman’s Return is a systematic documentation of the artist’s roots in the Northern Ontario
Aboriginal settlements of Heron Bay (population 480) and Collins (population 60). His parents made
their homes in both settlements in the years preceding and following his birth in 1978, and the
Hartman family’s time in these communities quickly fell into familial lore. Over a period of three weeks
in the late summer of 2010, Hartman returned to the sites and scenes of these years to document the
area and interrogate his own chimerical memories of the first years of his childhood there.
Arnaud Maggs (1926-2012) was born in Montréal. His life as a fine artist began in the mid-1970s after
a successful career in graphic design and commercial photography. Maggs’ work has been exhibited
internationally and has garnered many prestigious awards including the Gershon Iskowitz Prize in 1991,
the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts in 2006 and the Scotiabank Photography Award in
2012. In May 2012, Maggs was honoured with a major retrospective at the National Gallery of Canada.
Scrapbook (2009) is a four-part photographic series depicting page spreads of scrapbooks the artist
began in 1975, but never completed. Revisiting the books thirty-six years later, Maggs documented
his own personal archive of collected ephemera: bus transfer slips, deli numbers, luggage tags, claim
tickets, etc. These photographs, which are among Maggs’ most personal work, continue the artist’s longsustained interest in systems of classification and markings of time. Giving form to memories through
accumulated objects, Scrapbook points to the human impulse to collect keepsakes in an effort to record
time’s passing.
