Fáilte a chairde ar ais go dtí an cheathrú
TradFest anseo i gCathair Chill Chainnigh. Is
ó neart go neart go bhfuilimid ag dul agus tá
súil againn go naontódh sibh go bhfuil clár
iontach eile againn arís i mbliana. Dár ndóigh
is bliain tábhactach í seo i saol agus stair na
hÉireann agus sinn ag déanamh comóradh
ar chéad bliain Éirí Amach 2016. Le togha
an cheoil ar fáil i ngach cúinne dár gcathair,
bainigí súp as an cheoil agus an craic.
You are all welcome to our 4th annual
Kilkenny TradFest in the Marble City. We
continue to go from strength to strength,
and we hope you agree that we have a
programme of paid and free events this
year which matches any line-up in the
country. Of course this festival takes place
at the start of a fortnight of unprecedented
national celebration and commemoration
of the centenary of the 1916 Rising.
The cultural and literary revival of the late
19th and early 20th century were a key
part of the lead-in and the aftermath of
the events of Easter 1916. We are sure that
the men and women of the rising would
be justifiably proud of the healthy and
vibrant state of our traditional and folk
music life today. Our native language takes
pride of place this year too, with the likes
of Colm Mac Con Iomáire, Iarla Ó Lionáird,
Hothouse Flowers and Kíla as key acts in our
programme. With the very best of what our
tradition and those setting new boundaries
offer this weekend, we hope you enjoy every
minute of our 2016 Kilkenny Tradfest.
Is sinne le meas,
Cllr Malcolm Noonan (Chairperson)
and Cllr Joe Malone, Joe Reidy & Martin
Bridgeman. (2016 Festival Committee.)

Colm Mac Con Iomaire and his band perform in the intimate and stunning
setting of St. John’s Priory. Colm’s new Album ‘And Now The Weather’ has
been critically acclaimed, and was recently shortlisted for the Choice Music
Prize. In a crowded field of outstanding Irish fiddle players and interpreters
of traditional music, Colm Mac Con lomaire is unique. His music bares
distinctive creative hallmarks which have as much to do with his personality
and character, as with his impressive technical mastery, musical authority
and exquisitely expressive playing.
Irish singer and producer Iarla Ó Lionáird is known for his involvement with
Afro Celt System and The Gloaming. He performs Sean nós singing, and has
released four solo albums through Real World Records.

Iarla will be joined on stage by Australian born guitarist, Steve Cooney,
who makes a welcomed return to TradFest 2016, having opened for
Sharon Shannon at last year’s St Patrick’s Day concert. A bassist, producer
and didgeridoo player, Steve Cooney is one of the most dynamic modern
performers in traditional music. This is an evening not to be missed, with

Dublin’s Damien Dempsey closes the festival on Sunday 20th March with a
performance at Set Theatre. The songs contained on his six studio albums
and numerous live releases are essentially songs about people, the human
condition, and the Irish identity. For this exclusive performance, Damien
will include specially chosen songs that will reflect the occasion the entire
country is marking, in tribute to the men and women of the Easter Rising.
Kilkenny TradFest 2016 will showcase a new concertina trio of Noel Hill,
Jack Talty, and Cormac Begley. Bringing together three of Ireland’s most
influential concertina players, this trio draws on a wealth of musical
sources to create a unique concertina soundscape, that combines bass,
baritone, treble, and piccolo concertinas. This debut concert is not to be
missed!

Ireland’s Hothouse Flowers made their name during the late ‘80s and early ‘90s with a passionate fusion of rock, traditional Irish music, with influences
from soul and gospel. After winning the Street Entertainers of the Year award in 1985, a glowing write-up in Rolling Stone, and a single on U2’s label Mother,
Hothouse Flowers were signed to PolyGram. Their 1988 debut, ‘People’, reached the top of the Irish charts and peaked at number two in Britain. Their followups, ‘Home’ and ‘Songs From the Rain’, continued their success. Hothouse Flowers still perform together whenever possible, TradFest is thrilled to welcome
them to the festival.
