about Town
Our House Is Now a Home
One hundred years from now, the residents of Barrington will have a
216-year-old building in the heart of town that supports the community’s
culture, special events, and memories. The 116-year-old home of today on
Main Street is brand new again. This is a gift we have given to each other—
one that will always remind us of Barrington’s exciting Sesquicentennial
year. Since a masterful renovation inside and out, as well as thoughtful
interior and exterior designs, Barrington’s White House has already had
her first wedding. The calendar is filling quickly for social, cultural, and
family events and exciting things are in store for 2016. Quintessential
Barrington and the Barrington Area Chamber of Commerce are hosting
the first Chamber Mixer of the Month at the home on December 15 at 5
p.m. What fond memories will you make at Barrington’s White House?
The house is now our home. You are invited to enjoy her in the months
and years ahead.

Barrington Hills’ “Hoop Dreams”
On Monday, Oct. 5, Countryside
Elementary School students
participated in an energetic Pep Rally
to kick-off the fundraising effort for the
outdoor Basketball and Sports Court.
The children learned about the
“Coins 4 the Court” Challenge.
This event will allow every child to
contribute to the program by making
a donation, or by encouraging their
friends and showing their school spirit.
The Hoop Dreams Legacy Project
will enable all children of Countryside School a safer place to play at recess and during
Physical Education classes. It will also enable the children of the community a fantastic court
surface to use for basketball and other sports during non-school hours.
The Hoop Dreams Committee members and the Countryside School PTO thank the
Barrington Hills Park District for its financial support of this project. Leaders of the community

The 41st Art in
the Barn
Art in the Barn was started well before there
was a local hospital. The Women’s Auxiliary
supported this juried art show to raise funds
to build Good Shepherd, and now—more than
40 years later—the funds from this event are
Dayna and Katalina DeLeon Perez
earmarked to support the Advocate Good
Shepherd Hospital’s modernization project, with a
$500,000 commitment on their part.
Run by a large group of volunteers, the
successful event drew close to 5,000 attendees
this year. Co-chairwomen Sharon Vogel and Megan
Clarke offered the artists, vendors, attendees, and
community a wonderful experience that benefits
the greater Barrington area.

A Founder
Remembers
Art in the Barn original founder Pam Goodwin
(in center) shared her memories with QB:
“Looking back ... it's personally gratifying
when I attend Art in the Barn each year to see
that it continues to be perpetuated as such a
wonderfully successful community event. It's
also great that the dollars generated from the event continue to benefit the hospital with
its necessary and "never ending" expansion projects. As a member of a group of community
and hospital volunteers who had the foresight and vision to see the potential of Art in the
Barn some 40 years ago, I am delighted to see it succeed and expand year after year!
(Editor’s Note: We regret that in our Special Edition and in a story in our Sept/Oct 2009
issue covering Good Shepherd Hospital, that we incorrectly named Becky Ong in this photo
when it should have been Pam Goodwin.)

Barrington Giving
Day Returns
Each year on a Friday in mid-December a crowd of
thousands gathers outside Barrington Middle School’s Station
Campus. These invited guests begin arriving just before midnight.
Cars, trucks and vans park for the night, and a line forms that will
soon circle the building. It is often a cold, long night. They are not
lining up for concert tickets or in protest. It is, against all odds, a
celebration of anticipation. It is the eve of Barrington Giving Day, and
they are waiting for the doors of Barrington’s Giving Day to open.
This crowd represents an often-overlooked segment of
Barrington’s population—those who live below the federal poverty
line. All are challenged with making ends meet, and their struggle
becomes particularly poignant during the holidays.Parents are
faced with impossible decisions: Should we give our children coats
or food? Seniors, many of whom were financially secure until
recent years, wonder how they will afford to heat their homes or
apartments.
Pat Karon, Jeanette Muensch, and John Paul (“JP”) Hills have
worked for years to eliminate those troubling questions. Together,
they have united Barrington-area residents, charitable organizations,
churches and businesses to accomplish a herculean task: bringing
Christmas to those for whom it would otherwise be meager at
best—and doing so in way that preserves dignity and elevates the
human spirit. The result is Barrington Giving Day, a long-standing
and community-wide tradition that pulls everyone together.
It’s Time to Get Started!

“ThinkVirtues has already been successfully implemented in schools across Chicagoland.
Now we are expanding our program to provide tools for parents to instill virtues at home,”
says Kathy Motlagh, president of ThinkVirtues and author of the Eutopia book series. “Just
a few moments a day has a tremendous impact inspiring virtuous behavior in your children.”
The Virtue of the Week email subscription tool is part of the program also comprised of
the Eutopia book series and Virtues Question Cards. The ThinkVirtues’ email subscription
provides parents robust content and daily exercises to reinforce the Virtue of the Week.
It provides a thorough and complete framework to foster discussion, time of reflection,
creative expression, and real-life scenarios. The Virtue of the Week email program help
parents and children learn the importance of moral behavior and how to practice it in their
daily lives.
ThinkVirtues improves your child’s ability to assert themselves, reduce the feelings of
helplessness, and empower children to be responsible for their actions. With bullying in our
midst and self-esteem being attacked, it is essential to instill timeless values in our children.
“By engaging with our program, children are awakened to their own strengths and inspired
to make a positive impact in our world. By focusing on a different virtue each week, children
not only feel encouraged to practice their virtues but also enjoy the quality time and
interaction. This time together cultivates a deeper connection and improves communication
as a natural result,” says ThinkVirtues’ Director of Education Sara Motlagh.

Living riveted is about discovery. It’s the exploration of
places and spaces, but also of people and ourselves.
It’s the drive to open a whole world of new experiences.
We may have no control over where we’re from, but we
can decide where to go from there, and the action we
take to get there is what creates a riveting life.

An Eagle Scout Improves Pederson Preserve
While other students were enjoying their summer vacation, Thomas Suppes, Jr. was
finishing a project that would enhance visitors’ experiences at the Pederson Preserve, and
called BACT to do more. Suppes decided to construct large wooden steps and railings to
augment a wildlife viewing platform built by another scout from his troop, and to also create
a kiosk to provide visitors with information about the natural area. Working with a team of
18 volunteers (consisting of boys from Troop 10, family, and friends), Suppes estimates the
project took 150 hours from its inception until its completion July 11, 2015.
“We are so grateful that Thomas Suppes, Jr. chose to build an information kiosk to
provide a space for us to educate our visitors about this special natural area and its regional
significance,” says BACT Executive Director Lisa Woolford. “The new steps he built provide
better access to the wildlife observation platform, as well as a beautiful place for visitors to
rest. The new railing around the platform not only improves safety, but provides armrests for
birders and photographers.” For more information, visit bactrust.org/volunteer
