THE STRIDING REPORT Mar 2015 Issue 113 First in the Mystery 5k Series - 12 May 2015 The Striding Report The Striding PROBABLY LIVERPOOL’S PREMIER RUNNING CLUB NEWSLETTER From the Editor The other day my husband and I got on to the subject of patience. No, not how much he needs around me (although I did choose him carefully in that regard) but rather how little we all seem to have with ourselves and as runners especially, with our bodies. I sometimes get to a point where I completely fail to see the difference between dead tired and lazy. “Keep going”, I tell myself in between long working days and bizarre training sessions, “How hard can it be? Just get on with it will ye”. Well, that’s the polite version. And when it’s not naivety it’s definitely denial – “Rest for three weeks? There’s no way it’s going to take that long to recover! I had a rest for three days, that cold had better do one any minute, doesn’t it know I have a race at the weekend”!. IN THIS ISSUE Membership News 2 Strider of the Month 3 Rome Marathon 4 Trimpell 20 5 Port Sunlight 5k and 10k 6 8 Issue Date Sweatshop 10 Miler 9 Why I started running This year I’ve already had “the talk” twice. First time I wasn’t even out of February. At some point I nearly got grounded; in the end I had to ground myself and sleep for a whole weekend. You would think that at my age I would have learned to listen to what my body is telling me – the reality is that, like everyone else, I just don’t want to listen. I only want to hear him say “What, is that another hill in the middle of nowhere? What a FANTASTIC idea” without the slightest trace of sarcasm. Cross Country @ Beacon Park My husband, just like my body, tells me exactly what he thinks. Fortunately he seems to have a bit more sway in my decision process than my poor old legs, so when he says I’m overdoing it I tend to listen. All this to tell you that when things aren’t going your way, no matter what those cringe-making motivational memes on facebook tell you to do, listen to your nearest. At that point they’re likely to be a much better judge of your current fitness than yourself. Marathon season is in full swing with striders running about the streets of Paris, Manchester and London. Multi terrain competition opened with Rivington Pike and Tom King getting full points on a great out and back course up the Pike. The Liverpool Spring 10k saw a record number of striders take to the paths of Sefton parks – PLS had 93 participants on the course with Alex Cowing first strider home posting a great 36’49” and Sharon Samson first woman in 40’02” More MT action at Thurstaston saw Julien Tour as the first strider home and Cristina Puccini first woman. Sadly there was some confusion over the date of this race and a couple of striders didn’t make the start line as a result. First in the club’s celebrations of PLS’s 30th anniversary is the Awards Night on Friday 15 May at the Marriot hotel in Queens Square. A great night is on the cards with paparazzi on arrival, Casino, meal and awards presentation. 9 THE STRIDING REPORT | Issue 113 2 Membership News by Christopher Lee Once bitten always a Strider! As I write this piece one week after the deadline for articles (Sorry Cris), we are now nearly three weeks into the new 2015-16 season. Having just checked the on-line registration system I am happy to say that we now have 201 members fully registered and paid up for this season already. It took us until September last year to reach similar figures and from speaking to other people in the club this is the best start of season response we have had in a long time. A massive thanks has to go out from the Committee to all members who have made the effort and registered on the new system. We know it is new to everyone and will take a little while to get used to, as with any change, but we hope that in the long run it will make activities like renewals much easier for all. Having said that there are still quite a number of existing members who are yet to renew, so if this applies to you please can you do this as soon as possible. With the AGM due in the next month or so it would be good to be able to report a significant success rate in membership renewals. In addition to existing membership renewals, there has also been a high number of new members joining us over the past few weeks and this is a good opportunity to welcome you all to the club and thank you for choosing to spend your time running with us. I hope you have been made welcome by everyone and are enjoying your sessions here. New members join us with all ranges of ability as their starting point but it has been particularly nice to see people moving on from the Get Going Garston Group on the Thursday evenings and joining up with our groups more regularly. You are all a true testament to how well that group works and great credit has to be given to the likes of Rachel Rick and Shane Knott who have devoted a great deal of time to supporting the group and ensuring it works for those who attend. Now that we are into April it means that the longer days are coming back and that we can start our summer schedules again in the parks. After a long winter it is always a welcome change to get back into our park sessions and spend a little less time pounding the roads for every session. That said, here are just a few tips for the sessions, especially for new members who have never ran with us in the summer before. 6.45 start due to the distance and terrain involved. If you don’t want to do that run, don’t worry as there are usually other people also at club to organise an alternative session with instead. If you do fancy that run, then don’t wear your best trainers as they will get very muddy! Keep an eye out on the training plans for when races are on training nights. The Mystery 5k is organised by Liverpool Harriers once per month over the summer, costs members £2 to enter on the night and is a great run. Likewise the Walton Park 5 miler in May, though that costs a little more and you are better entering in advance. On these nights you will find that a lot of members will run those races instead of going to the club session so numbers will be thin on the ground at Garston. Finally – enjoy the daylight while it is here! We are blessed with the amount of parks and greenery we have nearby so really appreciate these summer sessions – they’re a great change from trudging round the dark streets in the cold and rain! Until next time enjoy your running! The spring and summer sun can get very hot, even in the evenings, so always consider if you need suncream on, as you can get nicely toasted after an hour in the sun. pennylanestriders@btinternet.com This weather also means the return of flies and bugs, especially in the parks, so another good option is to use a bug spray before you come out, or you may find the next day that you have been fed upon by the masses during your park session. Follow the club @TeamPLS1985 Hydration is also as important as ever during the spring and summer. On hot days consider taking something out with you for your run or having something close by for when the session ends. Spring and summer sessions mean the return of the Devil’s Gallop for the final Thursday of every month in the training schedules. This is a mixture of road and off road running, taking in the shores of the River Mersey running along from Hale Village back to Garston. More information will be posted about these sessions nearer the time of each one but if members do wish to join these runs be aware they often leave earlier than the usual on Facebook and Twitter: THE STRIDING REPORT | Issue 113 Strider of the Month: By 3 Martin Swensson Rachel Rick Martin Swensson is one of Penny Lane Striders’ most successful – and nicest – runners! As well as representing the club at every distance and in cross country as well as road running events, he often comes along with his family to support if not running himself. Martin continues to improve too, having set PBs in 2015 for 5k (15:51 at Barrowford Podium 5k), and half marathon (70:48 at Wilmslow Half Marathon). In 2015 he achieved PBs at 10 miles (54:06 at Preston) and marathon (2:30:06 – a new club record - at Manchester). If it makes you feel any better, his 5 mile time plummeted from 26:37 in 2014 to 26:38 in 2015. Of course, there’s plenty of time for him to knock a few seconds of that in the coming season. Why did you Choose Penny Lane Striders? Tim Warn and I were working together a few years ago. We got talking about running one day and he encouraged me to get fit and check out the Striders. I liked the friendly, laid back atmosphere in the club and met some great people to run with, so I joined. Halewood 5k on 5th July 2013 How long have you been with us? Since 2008. I've always enjoyed keeping fit and before I joined the Striders, I used to run a couple of local road races each year mostly 10k or half marathon. Once I joined the Striders, I learned more about all the different races which you can get involved in. What is your favourite distance and why? I enjoy all the 'classic' road distances. They all have different aspects which make them equally enjoyable and challenging. One of my favourite races in the 2014-15 season was the Wirral Half Marathon in October. I liked the point to point course, running through Birkenhead Park and then along the Wirral prom to finish at New Brighton. It was nice and flat, ideal for fast times and with unbeatable views of the Liverpool waterfront. What is your least favourite distance and why? 'As I've said, I love all the classic road race distances. I don't think I'll ever be tempted to race an Ultra though! You’re half way through a race, having had a bad day and feel like giving up, what makes you keep going? Support from family and friends – and there are so many great examples of this. When I ran the Chester marathon a few years ago, it was on the May bank holiday. It was quite a small race then, with a field of fewer than 2,000 and a course which went out towards Queensferry and back. The support from fellow Striders was amazing, at lots of Leading the field at Stadt Moers different parts of the course. About two thirds of the way through the marathon, we were running through the countryside, it was in the middle of nowhere really. It was very quiet with hardly any spectators there. I saw a couple of people out on bikes by the side of the course quite far up ahead and when I got closer to them, I recognised they were John and Michelle Kelly. They gave me loads of encouragement, they shouted 'you look strong, you're running really well' and that really inspired me to keep the effort going. What is your favourite training session? I just love lacing up my shoes and heading out the door for a run - whatever the time of day, distance, pace or route. If you could do one more run in the year what would it be? One more training run in leafy South Liverpool in the autumn. The At the NW Road Relays grounds of Speke Hall are one of my favourite places for an early morning run at any time of year. I like running along the tree-lined avenue leading towards the main house, and following the trail up onto the raised embankment with great views out over the river to North Wales. What is your best running memory? Being part of the Striders team which won bronze medals at the NW Counties Road Relays in Stockport last year. Dale, John, Jay and I ran together. Running is mostly an individual sport so the team competitions are something different and I really look forward to them. We'd been close to winning a bronze medal at the event a couple of times before but this time it all came together on the day. It was a tough course and the level of competition amongst all the other Merseyside clubs was very strong, with the overall positions changing hands several times during the four stages of the race. Our combined effort over the first three stages was enough to send John off on the anchor leg in 4th place of all the Merseyside clubs. He showed his class, kept a cool head and ran a superb even paced race. He overhauled Liverpool Pembroke to move into 3rd place and then held off a fast finishing Liverpool Running Club, entering the Woodbank Park Athletics Stadium to secure a historic bronze medal for the Striders. After the London What is your favourite post marathon race/training session snack? A banana and a glass of whole milk. Tell us something about you that we didn’t know? I'm a season ticket holder at Anfield. It's been a disappointing season for the Reds after coming so close to winning the title last year. There have been plenty of ups and downs over the years but I'll always love going to the game. Like running - it's a way of life! THE STRIDING REPORT | Issue 113 Rome Marathon 4 Sun 22 March By Sam Bentall Sam takes on the Eternal City marathon. Rome is so accommodating that it even provides familiar weather. On a wet and windy Sunday in March, 11,516 runners crossed the finish line of the Rome Marathon and I am delighted to report that I was one of them. The opportunity arose by chance ten weeks earlier when I realized that my other half, Richard, would be attending a conference in Rome on the same weekend as the marathon. I had just long enough to train. The training got off to a bit of dodgy start when the first long run I’d planned, the Four Villages Half, was cancelled, but after that I climbed aboard the Happy Bus every Sunday morning, usually in the dark, through the ice and the rain until 22nd March when I ran 26.2 miles around the eternal city. Sam on her way to a pb in Rome The weather forecast predicted rain for race day, and sure enough, there was a persistent downpour, although the temperature was fairly mild so not altogether bad conditions for a long run. I caught a taxi to the start line near the Colosseum and arrived in good time, although I soon realized that I’d been dropped off in front of the start, rather than behind it. A group of Ethiopian runners were allowed through the barrier, but I was flatly refused. “They’re the winners,” I thought, and I turned out to be right. Myself and the other mere mortals who found ourselves on the wrong side had to take the mile long hike around the cobbled streets until we found our way behind the line. I arrived just in time to start moving but I was right at the back. We were packed together like tinned fish and already drenched from the incessant downpour as we crossed the start. The rain didn’t cause too much of a problem in itself, but dodging the enormous puddles that had formed on the uneven cobbled streets did. Every so often a cry would come up from someone who had inadvertently landed ankle deep in cold water. The course is fairly flat considering that Rome is a city built on seven hills. The route starts on the Via dei Fori Imperiali in the shadow of the Colosseum, passing alongside the Tiber, taking in many famous landmarks, beautiful fountains and piazzas and ending back at the Colosseum. The most memorable moment for me was rounding a corner to see St Peter’s Basilica straight ahead. It was a real wow moment. Three hours into the race at midday I also loved hearing the Angelus bell peel across the city and later I read that Pope Francis had welcomed the Rome Marathon, whose course crossed the Vatican City. “Despite bad weather, there's a lot of you here today,” he said to the pilgrims. “You were courageous, like the runners of the marathon. I greet them with love”. There were some amazing runners at the Rome Marathon, not just the winners who were Ethiopia's 30-year-old Abebe Negewo Degefa with a time of 2:12:23 and Meseret Kitata Tolwak, 20, who won the women's race in 2:30:25. I was also inspired to hear about Sigrid Eichner, a 74 year old German runner who has entered the Guinness Book of Records for finishing over 1880 marathons and ultra-marathons. (Even more than our very own Eamonn Brady! Although, to be fair, she is a lot older than you Eamonn, so there’s still time!) She finished in 6.03.01 and her ambition is to run 1940 marathons by her 75th birthday in September to celebrate the year of her birth – 1940! And then there was Giorgio Calcaterra who succeeded in running the course twice. He crossed the finish line in 9th place (2.34.26) and wanted to set off again straight away but was called aside for a compulsory drug test. One hour later, when the testing was complete, he ran the course again and finished with the final runner, Eligio Lomuscio, a 70 year old competitor who has run every single Rome Marathon since its inception 21 years ago, finishing in 7.08.55. He was one of 42 ‘senators’ who have competed in the race every year. The oldest runner was 86 year-old Angel Squadron from Pisa. (What a fantastic name!) He finished in 6:03:13. As for my personal experience, I was aiming to run a subfour hour race. I was pacing myself nicely, or so I thought, running every mile in just under 9 minutes, although I was struggling to weave through the crowds having started so far back. By the halfway mark I knew that something had gone awry as the marker was about half a mile out of sink with my Garmin. I quickly realized that I had half a mile of catching up to do. I tried hard to pick up my pace over the next thirteen miles, and despite the fact that, by the finish, my Garmin registered that I’d run an extra half a mile 26.77 miles – it told me I had finished in 03.59. Even so, I had the suspicion I still hadn’t managed to achieve my goal. Sure enough when my chip time came through, it was 04.02.41 - a good time, if not quite as good as I’d wanted, but still an unforgettable experience. THE STRIDING REPORT | Issue 113 For those who might be interested, the name Trimpell comes from the Trimpell Oil Refinery, set up at Heysham near Lancaster in 1939 to provide aviation fuel for RAF spitfires that were to fly to victory in the Battle of Britain. The refinery is no more but the name was retained by the site, and now lives on in the title of a 20 mile road race: part of the Lancaster Race Series. Phil Myka Heard suggested that the race might be good Marathon training and so I entered, having been lucky enough to get the last club place for the London Marathon and then realising I needed to do some training. The Trimpell 20 Miler was Vicky spot on in my schedule. I'd built up to 18 miles in training, but how would a 20 mile race help with the plan? An added bonus was the chance to meet briefly with my brother John who had come over from Newcastle for the race as part of his own London Marathon training. I ran into 'the Badger' before the start and we swapped race tactics. The race itself is 99% traffic free and heads out of Lancaster into the Lancashire Lune Valley countryside. As a club event it benefits from being organised by dedicated runners who provide a warm Myka welcome, marshalling and great support. Water stations are every Lawrence two miles 1 and sensibly the drinks are handed out in small cups rather than big daft bottles. It Figure 2test captiondistance and despite is however a tough some breath taking views along the Lune Valley it's no stroll in the park. If you've In the Borders pub done a couple of half marathons and (Photo courtesy of Jez Malins fancy moving up to a full marathon this Summit Fever Media) race is a good stepping stone. 530 runners took part including a good showing from Penny Lane Striders. The weather was perfect and the route was most pleasant, largely along a cycle path Penny Lane All Stars! converted from a former branch railway. It was familiar to me and the Badger from our Coast to Coast bike ride last year. Cyclists and non-runners behaved themselves and kept out of the way. Runners looped back so I got a chance to see the formidable Lawrence Eccles as he powered himself along, eventually finishing with an impressive 2 hour 17 minute time. 5 Trimpell 20 Sun 22 March By Matthew Tollitt My own performance involved starting out at a vastly over ambitious pace, feeling very pleased with myself after ten miles and then hitting the dreaded bonk at about 15 miles. I wasn't using any gels so the combined lack of nutrition and over ambitious start meant I had to struggle to a painful last couple of miles. Not to worry, it was a valuable lesson. I completed the course and was delighted to be handed a chocolate Ruth doughnut along with my medal and tee shirt. When I run the London Marathon I will stick to a sensible pace and carry a few gels to ensure I am just as well fuelled as those spitfires 75 years ago. Many thanks to Lawrence for the lift and well done to the other PLS runners who took part: Phil Macklin, Thomas King, Pauls Auce, Cristina Puccini, Myka Heard, Claire O'Callaghan, Jane Nicolson, Andy Cantwell, Ruth Fisher and Victoria Lewis Matt Spot the difference? Matt’s brother John THE STRIDING REPORT | Issue 113 6 A day out in Port Sunlight Many Striders make the trip to this popular set of races: here’s what they have to say about them Ron Bowcock Which race did you enter? 10k What did you think of the route and facilities? route was great for seeing fellow runners but found I lost too much momentum whilst turning around the cones Share a memory of the day: There were 3 of us who shared a car and we all got PB,s, can't really ask for more! Would you recommend it and why? Yes, smallish field so no big queues for anything , well organised and a nice setting Which race did you enter? 5k & 10K What did you think of the route and facilities? Seemed more uphill than normal but more straight forward than previous years. Good facilities and helpful people staffing the event. Share a memory of the day: Great support from PLS, made some new running friends and delighted to finish both races. Would you recommend it and why? Great location Mal Taylor Stuart Harrison Which race did you enter? I entered both the 5k and 10k. What did you think of the route and facilities? I always enjoy running Port Sunlight. It is a quick course and due to the intimacy of the village, there is plenty of support out there. The route is nice and scenic too. Share a memory of the day: There were so many memories on the day. After misplacing my club colours for the last couple of races I was finally back in my PLS vest for the first time this year. Nothing gets you digging deep more than support from your club mates. I was also lucky enough to get my wife out running with me for the 5k. She will openly admit that she is not a runner but she gets stuck in and ran her best 5k time. Would you recommend it and why? I would most definitely recommend it. It doesn't matter what level you are at. With 2 distances to choose from, a huge range of abilities, a flat course, and great crowd support; it really is a race for anyone. Which race did you enter? I entered the 10k, and my boys did the 1k What did you think of the route and facilities I love this route as it’s quite twisty which I thought made it really interesting in turn this meant that you got to see other running Friends regularly on the u turns! So you’re never far from a bit of encouragement and a cheer! I thought the Facilities where great. Jo Bruchez-Corbett with I did both races last year and really enjoyed them but decided to do just the one this year, although a little part of me wished I’d of done both! The atmosphere at Port sunlight is always great in my opinion and it’s a great opportunity to catch up with other running friends. Everyone seemed really up for it and there where a lots of supporters there too. It was a little cold initially but once you got going the weather was perfect for a run! I was really pleased with my time and I know a lot of people PB’d that day! I would definitely recommend port sunlight as there is consistent support right round the course! Esther, Mal, Clare, Myka, Craig & Anna THE STRIDING REPORT | Issue 113 7 Esther, Myka, Craig, Stu, John, Michelle, Paul, Ann-Marie, Kathryn, Mal, Trish, Billy & Ron The Three Amigos! Clare O’Callaghan Michelle King Which race did you enter? I was entered in both. What did you think of the route and facilities? Route is nice, bit repetitive but that's probably my fault for doing both races! Loved the goodie bags. Facilities were fine! Share a memory of the day : Running the 5k as the 3 amigos and crossing the line together - with Sarah Nealy and Claire Stanistreet. We've never ran a race and stayed together throughout before! Which race did you enter? 10K What did you think of the route and facilities? Route was good - lots of twists and turns so it kept you busy and you didn't get bored. Share a memory of the day: Drinking hot chocolate and a cup of tea with Ben Freeney before the race started to warm us up. Would you recommend it and why? Would definitely recommend it. Nice course where you go round twice so you know how far you are from the finish as you go around a second time and a good opportunity for a PB. Would you recommend it and why? I’d recommend it as a fun race, nothing too serious! Esther, Myka, Jo and Claire John Guy Which race did you enter? I entered the Port Sunlight 10k in preparation for Liverpool Half Marathon What did you think of the route and facilities? The route was a 2 lap course through the village with lots of support from the village and Penny Lane around the course, the race was well organised with good facilities. Share a memory of the day: On the day I really felt the Penny Lane team mentality, the support and encouragement around the course from start to finish from fellow penny laners was the best feeling, it drives you on to do your best even if you're struggling, a thumbs up, some words of encouragement or the nod of a head just pull you onto the finish line. Would you recommend it and why? I'd definitely recommend the 10k its a really good course which gave my best 10k time so far and the overall support made the race for me personally. THE STRIDING REPORT | Issue 113 8 Why I started running By Jennifer Grant (Nigel Grant’s daughter) Next time you feel like telling someone they’re running like a girl remember this photo . You say Dave, Nigel says @#?&. I started running because of my daddy Nigel he has been running at penny lane for years on end And I saw that my brother was going to Liverpool harriers but I wanted to run for penny lane so I went on the website and I looked at the ages and I was too young to run for them so I asked my daddy if I could run for Liverpool harriers and my daddy actually said yes. But I now run for Liverpool harriers but actually I want to run for penny lane. Jennifer at the Merseyvend with dad Nigel COME ON PENNY LANE. THE STRIDING REPORT | Issue 113 Beacon Park XC By Andy Keeley Personal recollections of a cross Day dawned cold and clear. The course is almost on the top of Ashurst Beacon, hence the name, and the field at the start felt very exposed. I travelled to the race with a car full of Mersey Tri runners and wished them luck for the coming battle, but not too much. The Penny Lane tent was being set up as I arrived. I was not too keen to get stripped off as it was a bit cold with a reasonable breeze at the top of the hill cutting through my thin clothes. After much prevarication I finally stripped off to my shorts and donned my spikes and went for a warm up. The ground at the top of the hill was hard and even the mole hills were frozen solid. Finally stripped down to vest and shorts and then joined in the shivering huddle at the start. After a brief briefing about the revised course it was off we go. A gallop up the hill to old starting point and then down the hill as an arm flaying mob, dodging those rock hard mole hills. Breathing started to get under control as we hit the bottom and traversed the hillside to 9 the first climb. This is a short steep climb. I always feel like a cross country skier as I plod country race up the hill with my feet splayed like a duck. Reach the top with lungs bursting and legs slowing and then it is down the hill again. Overtaken by a Spectrum Strider woman, who bore a striking resemblance to one of my cousins, this thought filled my mind for a bit (amazing how my mind wanders at times). Twisting and turning through the trees felt OK as we headed down towards the bottom of the course. A few muddy bits, which I love, and we were crossing the bottom field. I sensed the presence of someone on my shoulder, a familiar face, Ian Russell was tracking me. I tried to push on but Ian was stuck like a limpet. I then noticed Colin was also joining the group. On the drag up long climb I felt the pressure from my fellow Striders as we caught John Connelly briefly. The three of them then started to open a gap and I started to struggle. Ian looked really determined, Colin was pulling some great faces and John was pumping out the sweat. Up to the top of that long hill was tough and then it was across to start the second lap. The next lap was a bit of a blur in parts, the climb up the steep section was tough but I kept on going and tried to pull in the three Striders ahead. As we started the long climb up the hill I started to pull John in, who was blowing hard, and tried my best close down Colin and Ian but to no avail. A final surge to the line, during which I was overtaken by a Mersey Tri (curses) and then across the finish line and I was done. Pretty happy with the finish position and then went over to congratulate Ian, who was sitting on the grass getting his breath back. In the afterglow of the race the cold no longer affects you and you exchange snippets of daring-do with fellow Striders. Congratulated Martin on his individual win and cheered in fellow Striders as they came in. Then it was back in the car to Liverpool. Cross Country racing is a great club event with everyone racing for position down the order. The finish is always full of smiling faces, after they have got their breath back, and no one is worried about times or pre-race expectations. So roll on next year when we will do it all again. Sweatshop 10 Miler By James Stansfield At only £8 to enter, the Sweatshop 10 miler at its new location in Bispham, seemed like a good idea. With the offer of fish and chips on completion from Neil Hannett it seemed like a great idea!! Well it was until he decided to injure himself and not run and until I found out that the race was actually on Mother’s Day and I would be abandoning Sarah for most of her first Mother’s Day – oops!! Despite that I set out from home with a cautious optimism of finally getting myself another PB having not had one since last May. However having not run further than 7 miles since doing the London Marathon last April I was slightly worried with how I would cope with the extra distance. I’d run the St Helens 10k the week before and based on that time the internet told me I should be capable of running around 1:46. With a PB of 1:52 in my only previous 10 mile race and never having been close to running times that the internet thinks I should before I was a little dubious but at least being on the front at Blackpool it was bound to be nice and flat. Arriving at race HQ was a strange affair as they gave out the goody bags as you collected your number. Resisting the temptation to tuck into my prize box of chocolate fingers and head home I jogged to the start line on the front with Eunice and John. Much to my concern it turns out the prom at Blackpool is not flat at all but instead, and perhaps appropriately as it is Blackpool, was more like being on the Big Dipper but it was at least dry and very little wind. The race was two uneven laps, 4.8 miles followed by 5.2 but with slightly different turning points on the laps it makes the route a little more interesting. It also turns out that there is an upper and lower part of the prom. I started off slowly, as I have a tendency to go to fast and then burn out, and felt comfortable for the first few miles. I was having quite a battle at this point with the only 80+ year old man in the race. Thankfully the small uphill’s allowed me to just about keep ahead of him. At around 2 miles we headed down onto the lower part of the prom and with nothing to look at other than the sea I could feel my legs starting to feel a little heavy already. I forced myself to think about the PB and kept myself going, keeping to a steady pace around 5 seconds per mile outside my target time. Once I turned and got back onto the higher section I settled down and felt much better and I found that the time and miles started ticking down. I was running quicker on the dipper than on the flat!! Just after turning back onto the lower section at around 6.5 miles I started feeling tired so took my gel and I don’t know if it really works that quickly or it was just my mind but I felt great suddenly and pushed on running a 10:08 mile instead of my steady 10:40. And then at 8 miles my extra energy seemed to desert me. I felt tired and slow and like the finish was never going to come. But looking at my watch I knew that if I kept going that I was heading for a PB, it was just a question of how much time I could knock off and could I get anywhere near that 1:46. Pushing through those last two miles was tough but I managed to keep up a good pace even though it didn’t feel like it. I crossed the line and looked at my watch and was amazed to see that I had finished in 1:46:19. I had taken nearly 6 minutes off my PB, hit my internet target time but more importantly after being a member for nearly 2 years I was finally a counter for a Penny Lane Men’s Team. Just a shame I contributed such a high number!! All in all a good little race as long as the weather is reasonable and just make sure you check the calendar before booking races!! THE STRIDING REPORT | Issue 113 10 Captain’s Log There has been loads to report since our epic northwest cross country sunday league win. We have a new club Half Marathon Record 70:43. After starting the month Dale Higham by improving the clubs 2nd fastest 5k time by a whopping 8 seconds, Martin Swensson Yet agin obliterated the club half marathon record at wilmslow taking almost a minute off his previous record. This is a massive margin to be taking off a club record which stood for the best part of a decade before martns recent efforts. Nigel Grant who set most of the records that martin has improved is not a man to stand by idly. He was out setting a club v50 Record at Hale 5 miler 29:22. The end of the xc season brought another club xc championship title to go with his overall northwest league title for martin which of course came in the title winning team. what a season! Also in the xc Bob Barrows came from behind to pip Neil Bullock to the runners up gong and a place on the club honors list. both were outstanding all season. The Multi Terrain Championship also drew to a close. Lawrence Eccles defended his title. Niel Bullock had more joy here and picked up the runners up pot while adding a new name to the club honours list. The club road championship has also concluded. No surprise the Winner was Martin Swensson who clinched the title in style with the half mara record. Mike Deveraux was close winning all his age category distances. For me the good thing about our club in particular is the way the age categorys provide ecellent competition as you advance in years and can no longer in most cases compete with the younger legs. we have winner and runners up gongs for all age cats for 5k,5m,10k,half,10m,mara, John Connolly, Dave Owens, Ste Mcnicholas, Si Birtles, Nige Grant, Andy Keeley, Dave Cain, Steve Pemberton, Mike Dev , Michel Sharkey, Jim Garvey, John Bampton, Marty Hirrell, Terrence long, Phil Murray, Jay Clarke, Barry Bright, Kevin Obrian, Mike Roxborough, Jerome Doyle, Lawrence Eccles, Me, Adrian Laughrey, Paul Riley, Paul Brady, Mark Wigglesworth, Dave Mangan, Mark Finch. Will all be up on stage getting papperazied at our 30th annivarsary extraveganza/awards night. There have been plenty of personal bests too. Chris Lee, Col Dobbs, Andy Leslie, John Jensen, Andrew Biddle, Jerome Doyle, James Stansfield, Richard Thorpe, Andy Cantwell Have all listed PB'S. There were some excellent results at the liverpool half but i cant see any info on pb's for this but well done. please do make a note on the forum if you get a pb even if the results are already listed. I cant fail to notice the progress of in particular group 1 and 2's race times. group 2 are posting similar times to g1 from a year or two ago and g1 have overall pushed on another gear. The training is obveously working and the people are happy. well done to Cris Lee for sorting the schedule and the leaders for doing what they do. g3,4,5 are also functioning as they should moving improvers up and indeed maintaining those who are looking to maintain their fitness. We had two mens teams out at sefton park for the relays and although we never got the rresults to match recent performances everyone who attended aquitted themselves well. some excellent individual runs and 23 lads got to experience the excitement, commeraderie and drama of the relays first hand. well done to the runners and to all who came along to support and cheer them on. See you all at the 30th anniversary bash 2014 drew to a close with Clare O’Callaghan, Jane Nicholson and Rachel Rick competing in the final race of the year, the Liverbird Marathon on New Year’s Jane Hallows Eve. New Year’s Day saw many striders turnout for the first Park Run of 2015 with Oonagh first home (very dedicated!) Then before January came to an end Clare, Jane and Rachel were at it again, completing marathon number two - the tough Anglesey coastal trail marathon. Claire Meadows PB’d the Central Lancashire half, but there was disappointment all round with the late cancellation of the Helsby Half. For the second time in recent years the winter weather prevented the race going ahead. No such trouble with the parks runs. As ever we continue to see members competing all over the place, York, Finsbury Park, Cambridge and Armagh to name a few. But the most exotic location this time round has to go to Liz Turner who ran the East Coast Park Run in Singapore (good to see you keeping up with the training whilst enjoying the warmer climate). Well done to Gill and Rachel who represented us in the Merseyside XC at Sherdley Park and Cristina and Sharon who ran well in the L&D championships in Clarkes Gardens. The cross country season has now come to a close, and what a season it was. Congratulations to the men’s team who won the team prize this year with Martin Swensson winning the individual honours in the Sunday league. Well done to everyone who ran, supported and marshalled this year, with special thanks to Cristina our xc manager. It was a tough season with the increased number of clubs making it very competitive. We had 19 ladies compete this year and a big thank you goes out to each and every one of you. I have got to give Pam a special mention as she competed in all six races and Oonagh who only missed one. It was good to see some newer faces as well as the trusty old faithful. Congratulations go to Sharon Samson and Sarah Flanagan who were both first home for the club on their debuts in the black and white vests. We finished a very respectable 4th place, a good platform to build on next year. Cristina and I will be looking to encourage more members to give xc a go next season, it is great for building strength for those spring/summer races and it really is good fun – honest! It’s not an end to off road running though, there are plenty multiterrain races to enjoy. Parbold hill saw the ladies team finish in third place with Maria Kelly finishing in the top 10 (8th lady), and Cristina, Oonagh, Jane and Eunice making up the team. They were cheered on by little Martha Kelly who looked as cute as ever in her team PLS kit. We had a huge turn out for the Mad Dog 10k recently with Fiona Dutton leading us home and PB’s from Lesley Finnih and Debi McMillan. Well done to Liz Simpson who won her age category in the Wrexham Village Bakery Half. As the season draws to a close, good luck to everyone getting in those final few races to count towards the club championships – watch out for the awards night date (to be announced) – it’s always a good night. I wish you all the best for the 2015/16 season – may you run well, be injury free and enjoy! It has been a good season for the club with victory for the men in the Cross Country and some new club records set. First up is a comparison of the total number of races run at each distance, together with the turn out for XC and the multi-terrain challenge trophy series. The growth of parkrun can be seen in the rate of increase in 5ks over the past 3 years. Over all distances the number of runs has increased. The growth of the club can be seen in these figures. For XC the push for our first championship has seen a greater number of men competing, which I am sure has been a contributing factor in our success. Multi-terrain number are fairly static and in the coming year we have included more local events to increase participation. Honourable mention to Mike Devereux who won every distance in his age group but was pipped by Martin based on age corrected times. I have full records back to 2010 but before that I have only the initial tables drawn up by Tim Warn and some paper records. I will plough through these gradually but if I have left anyone’s times out please let me know and I will update the records. For the Striding Report I will continue to report significant improvements and any “New Entries” in the top 5. Martin Swensson set a New Club Half Marathon Record at Wilmslow with a time of 1:10:48. He also improved his 2nd fastest MOpen 5k time at the Podium 5k in Nelson. Nigel Grant moved up to 2nd fastest M50 at 10k after his performance at Port Sunlight. Mike Devereux became the 4th quickest M65 for the half marathon after his performance in Liverpool. Sharon Samson set a New F35 5k record at the Princes Park parkrun and followed that up with a New F35 10k record at the St Helens. Finally Sharon set a new 2nd fastest half marathon time for F35 at Liverpool. An impressive start at the club. Myka Heard set a new 4th fastest half marathon time for the F45 age group. Mary Heery set a new 2nd fastest time for the half marathon for the F55 age group at Liverpool. Rachel Rick improved her half marathon time to record the 3rd fastest F55 time again at Liverpool. Liz Simpson set a New F65 10m record at Rhyl. THE STRIDING REPORT | Issue 113 Gill 22 THE STRIDING REPORT | Issue 113 23 THE STRIDING REPORT | Issue 113 24 The View from the Back: Running with dogs by Rachel Rick I have always tried – with varying degrees of success – to run with my dog / dogs. The image in my mind was a romantic notion – me and my faithful hound(s) covering miles of beautiful countryside, in perfect harmony. In my mind, the sun is always what he wants to do. Mostly this is to run round people in circles, and when he’s had enough he simply lies down and won’t budge. This wasn’t a problem when he was 5 months old, but now he’s 5 years old it is! He’s also oblivious to other runners, so I have to keep at the back to make sure he doesn’t trip anyone up. And yet everyone else seems to manage it. In Penny Lane alone we Please be patient shining (although it’s never too hot) and we never have to detour to McDonald’s for a toilet stop. My dogs have never quite got this. We can’t always get into step for a start. I’ve been known to trip have Korky, Penny and Bella, Henry and others. Other people are living my dream. Korky knows to run faster when he hears clapping (although Frank didn’t tell Cristina this until after a parkrun where Korky accelerated past every marshal!), Penny even carries a doggycam. These dogs also keep on running for mile after mile after mile. Advantages: killing two birds with one stone – you and the dog over Bonnie, who was a very tall Labrador, resembling nothing more than the Hound of the Baskervilles. I did this not once but three times over six or seven years. Rufus is very clear exercised in one go; lots of fun; dog quiet for the rest of the night; people love your dog. You can fit your dog harness with a camcorder – excellent! Disadvantages – possibility of shoulder dislocation (from dragging or being dragged) and other injuries; need to carry bags (empty and full); people hate your dog. On the whole, I’m going to persevere. CLASSIFIEDS Circuit Training Monday 7pm to 8pm £3 Greenbank Gym @ IM Marsh College Barkhill Road Liverpool 18 Tight calves? Dead legs? Sore hammies?
