Traditional city in Tokyo
Written by SHINYA MURASE, 2007
Where do you want to go in Tokyo?
If you want to see the traditional Tokyo, you should go to ASAKUSA.
ASAKUSA is a famous traditional city in Tokyo. Many people visit Asakusa to see
the sight every year. There are the traditional architecture and many passionate
events in Asakusa. And I think people in Asakusa are very powerful, kind and friendly.
If you have some trouble in Asakusa, you should ask people living in Asakusa for help.
They maybe help you kindly.
So, if you want to know the traditional Tokyo, you should go to Asakusa. And maybe,
you can know what traditional Tokyo is.
About 1300 years ago, on March 18th, in 628, two fishermen caught the Kannon
statue in their fishing nets in the Sumida River in Tokyo. That was the genesis of
Sensoji Temple. The Kannon Bodhisattva image (Seikanze Onbosatsu) became a
symbol of faith to many people. During the early era, the temple was underdeveloped
and surrounded by a meadow. However, many people started to visit the temple from
far away. The town of Asakusa has grown along with the Sensoji Temple – especially
during Edo period, when the Tokugawa shougunate designated Sensoji Temple as an
authorized prayer location. For the town of Asakusa, prosperity ensued.
During the Edo period, recycling systems were well developed and there was great
harmony between humans and nature. People gathered, and there were many
merchants in Asakusa. Yet Asakusa was never just a religious town; it has always
been a cultural central of the Japanese tradition of harmony with seasonal events and
nature.
Toward the end of the 19th century, the Edo period ended with the Meiji restoration.
The name Edo was changed to Tokyo. Even after the Meiji restoration and the end of
an era, Asakusa remains a popular spot for many people. Even now, Asakusa
maintains an Edo atmosphere; a tradition of hospitality endures, not only for people
from all over Japan, but also for tourists from around the world.
ASAKUSA has many events.
So, I introduce some of the major events in Asakusa to you.
Asakusa Jinja Shrine deifies three people: two fishermen and a wise man. The festival also goes by
the name Sanja Gongen, a reference to the three people. Sanja Matsuri Festival celebrates this
shrine and it is held over the third weekend in May. This festival is known for its participants
proudly carrying mikoshi portable shrines.
From throughout the Edo period, Japanese fireworks technology has developed to the level of world
renown. There are many fireworks display in Japan, but those during the Sumida River Display
Contest are some of the most famous. The contest is held at the end of July. The fireworks in the sky
bring the art of color alive and fascinate visitors.

HISTORY OF HANAYASHIKI
Hanayashiki was built as a botanical
garden in 1853 and used by a haiku poet
and maid of the inner palace to relax. And
then in meiji period, many animals,fo
example tiger, lion and so on, were gathered
like zoo and many arts product are
displayed. When showa era began, various
attractions are set up, for example train,
boat, bikkurihouse and so on. So the basis
of present Hanayashiki was made in this.In
showa 35, Bee tower which is the highest
building in Asakusa was built. Afterwards,
various attractions were also made and it
reach now.
Bee tower
In Hanayashiki you can
not only enjoy interesting
attractions but also feel a
smell of the history from old
fashioned buildings. So you
can enjoy atmosphere of
Hanayashiki different from
that of other themeparks.
ATTRACTIONS OF HANAYASHIKI
DISK-O
This is a new attraction made in April in
2007. This big attraction rolls out and
passenger can feel very exciting. This
attraction will be main attraction in
Hanayashiki in nearfuture.
BEE TOWER
This is a symbol of Hanayashiki and
famous for its height. This is 45 meters
high! The sight from bee tower is very
splendid because you can see the whole of
Asakusa.
MISEMONO HOUSE
In this house you can see many old toys.
When you enter this house, you might feel
as if you do time slip into showa era or
taisho era.
Other attractions in Hanayashiki are of course also interesting like above
mentioned attractions. So you should visit this theme park at once!
Written by Kawabata Toyo.
Do you know the Sumida
river,
which
runs
through
Asakusa? Perhaps most people
hear the name of the river
because it is famous for many
things. This river is very long
and called what is called “ikkyu
kasen”. Now, I introduce the
other points of this river to you.
HISTORY
In the Edo period Asakusa played two important roles for people. The one is that Asakusa was the
place where various kinds of supplies were gathered. And another is that it was a big entertainment
district for people because many cultures developed in this place, for example kabuki, no and etc.
And Sumida river was important for both of the point. In the former point, its river’s water
transportation contributed to the supply of the many things. Without this river’s water
transportation system, Edo couldn’t develop greatly as known for us now. And in the latter point,
beautiful scene of this river was a relaxing spot for people exhausted by crowded city. Such this,
Sumida river has been had important aspect for people’s life.

Sumida river has many bridges and there is

FIREWORKS DISPLAY
In Sumida river fireworks display
has been held every year since 1732.
At first this was a ceremony for people
died
from
hunger. Now,
in
last
Saturday of July on every year this
party is held. Surprisingly, more than
million people take part in this
display! Would you visit Sumida river
to see this fireworks too?

Shinnosuke Kubo
“What do you think of
architecture of Asakusa?”,
somebody asked. In that
case, most people answer
“My favorite is
KAMINARIMON.” It is
true that KAMINARIMON
is famous architecture in
Asikis and SENSOUJI is
also famous for its big gate,
KAMINARIMON.
However, there are many
interesting buildings in
Asakusa and most people
don’t know it.
When you hear the word
“architecture”, you may

words, first impression of

architecture of the city.
There is a phrase going
“Experience is the best
teacher.” But I think it
doesn’t suit Asakusa.
That’s because Asakusa
has too many FACES.
Experience will make you
confused! In short, what I
want to tell you is
ASAKUSA is not the city of
KAMINARIMON but has
many kinds of aspects.
ASAKUSA SHIN-GEKIJYOU
ASAKUSA SHIN-GEKIJYOU is
one of the old movie theaters in
Asakusa. This movie theater only
plays Japanese old movies such as
“ninkyo-mono”, Japanese old
yakuza movie. Besides, in this
movie theater, three movies are
played simultaneously. However,
the fee of the theater is not so
expensive. So, I strongly
recommend a person who loves
Japanese old movies. You step in
there once; you will feel the real old
sub-culture of Japan
ASAKUSA ENGEI HALL
When you come to Asakusa, you
shouldn’t miss ASAKUSA ENGEI
HALL. ASAKUSA ENGEI HALL is
famous for Japanese comedy, RAKUGO,
MANDAN, MANZAI, KAMIKIRI and so
on. Besides, many famous comedians
used to play in this theater. For
example, Beat-Takeshi, Kiyoshi Assume
are the graduates of this theater. In a
single day, there are two department
shows, day time show and night time
show. During a day around 40
comedians came on the stage, so it’s
difficult to listen and watch their stage
carefully but you surely enjoy Japanese
traditional comedy. At last, fee is not so
cheap that you have to arrive there
when you have enough time and money.
19
ASAHI BEER CORPORTAION BULDING
When you walk around Agatsuma-bridge, you will
easily find interesting two buildings. That will be
ASAHI BEER CORPORATION BUILDING. As you
may already know, the left side of the building copied
shape of the beer. Besides, the right side of the
building is used for multipurpose hall. Whether you
like its unique design or not, the buildings must be
important land mark of Asakusa!
KAMIYA BAR
KAMIYA BAR is the oldest bar in Japan. It has
already passed for 100 years since it started the bar.
There are many kinds of alcoholic beverages and the
most famous one is “denki-bran.” It is an alcoholic
drink which is mainly made of brandy. Surprisingly,
denki-bran was loved by famous writers such as
Sakutaro
Ogiwara,
Jyunichiro
Tanizaki,
Ango
Sakaguchi and so on. Of course, denki-bran is also
loved by a lot of people now. Besides, the unique name
was quoted by the old fashion of attaching everything
with “denki.” So, please don’ be afraid of drinking den
ki-bran. It has no relation with electricity!
DENPOUIN STREET
In Asakusa, there are many types of
sidewalks. One of that is DENPOUIN
STREET. If you walk down the street,
you will find many kinds of items.
Besides, you can enjoy window
shopping too. In addition to that, old
type of architectures will make you
feel like going back to old days Japan.
When you walk around DENPOUIN
STREET, please walk slowly and feel
the atmosphere of real shitamachi.

Job in Asakusa
BY SAORI TAKIZAWA
Interview with a worker in Asakusa
We interviewed “Asakusa Umaimon Azuma”.
(浅草うまいもん あづま) They serves local Asakusa-style
dishes (Japanese dishes, Sushi, noodles, Omelet Rice and
Sweets ) in lively atmosphere. So, we can feel the old part
of Tokyo.
This man is the CEO of Asakusa Umaimon Azuma. He
talked about his shop, Asakusa, English and University
students in detail.
Interviewer (I):
Firstly, What prompted you to start this shop?
CEO (C): According to Edo-era’s articles, people sold kibi-dango (a kind of Japanese sweets,
millet dumping) and did good business. It existed as Asakusa’s culture.
I’d like to keep cultures like this. Then, five years ago, one of my friends proposed
me to manage a kibi-dango shop in Nakamise street. I was glad to hear that, so I
enlarged my business. (Now, he runs Japanese restaurant and kibi-dango shop.)
I:
What kind of people come to this shop?
C:
Regardless age or sex, many kinds of people; family, couple, students in school
excursion and groups of foreign travelers come to this shop.
I:
What is your recommended dish?
C:
We serve many kinds of local Asakusa-style dishes. I
recommend “Hire nokke omelet rice (ヒレのっけオムライス,
fried-porks on omelet rice). You can enjoy two tastes. Also, we
are particular about this dish’s name. ”Nokke” sounds friendly.
We’ll try to suggest new combinations.
21
I:
When do you feel fortunate to manage this shop?
C:
When customers say “thank you”, I think it is good to have managed this shop. In Asakusa,
of course, we sell foods or goods, but we also do small talk with customers.
we cannot do that. We consider selling “atmosphere of Asakusa”.
On the Internet,
Also, our customers
come here again with their friends. So we can expand the network of people.
I:
Secondly, I’d like you to interview about Asakusa, what’s attractio
of Asakusa for you?
C:
Asakusa’s attraction is broad connection with person. In one sid
Roppongi has many attractive modern buildings and latest shop
But, people work too hard, so it may be strained.
In other side, Asakusa has calmly time and you can communica
friendly with people.
I:
Where should I visit in Asakusa?
C:
You should visit Senso-ji, Statues of goddess of mercy
and Sanjya-sama (Asakusa shrine).
I:
Does Asakusa have any problems?
C:
We have two problems. First, Nakamise street has been
crowded by shops, but other streets comparative become
empty. I want you to see other places. Also, the number
of multiple stores has increased. I think multiple stores can
ruin atmosphere of Asakusa.
I:
Is there a place in which it changes in Asakusa?
C: Jyoban new line opens, so I expect more people will visit
Asakusa.
I:
What is the image of Asakusa in the future?
C: If the new Tokyo tower is build, we have to make the new road
where Asakusa is connected there.
22
I:
Thirdly, please tell me about English. In Asakusa or this
shop, how do you receive foreign travelers?
C:
The Asakusa’s food union has English lessons.
Moreover,
In this shop, we hangs up a sign; “English available”. So,
we request staffs to learn how to take orders and make
menu written in English. However, it is difficult to explain
about our menu.
I:
How do you study English?
C:
In Asakusa, there are many English-speakers, so I speak
English in my daily life.
I:
Finally, do you have any messages to university students?
C:
Many university students are energetic and tidy, but some of them looks dispirited.
I want them to become energetic and try to do everything.

Kawaii!
BY SAORI TAKIZAWA
“Kawaii” has become a prominent aspect
of Japanese popular culture, clothing, food,
entertainment, toys, personal appearance,
behavior, and mannerisms.
Kawaii can also refer to people, typically
girls who use make-up and costumes to
resemble the characters in anime (Japanese
cartoon) magazines. This is related to
another popular trend in Japan that's
spreading around the world: cosplay. Cosplay
is an example of the common Japanese
practice of blending English words (in this
case, costume and play) to create new terms.
Interview with Cosplayers
(“I” means Interviewer, “C” means Cosplayer. )
I: Why did you start cosplay?
C: Because we love characters! For example, I wear the costume of Japanese computer
game, ”Higurashi no naku koro”.
I: How long have you done cosplay?
C: I enjoy it for 10 years.
I: Where do you enjoy cosplay?
C: We have events in Ariake, Akihabara, Korakuen and Utsunomiya.
I: How many people does take part in these events?
C: About 500 people take part in cosplay’s evevnts. In the big events of manga, there are
2000 people.
I: That’s too large-scale! Then, how did you get this costume?
C: I made it. But some people buy costumes.
I: What’s the attraction of cosplay for you?
C: I can do cosplay only now, so cosplay gives me precious memories.

understand his complicated theory or not, it is easy to
go and feel his great sense of artisist.
8-16-10 Ginza Chuo-ku Tokyo
Tokyo Metropolitan Government
The building of Tokyo Metropolitan Government is
constituted by there types of building and the biggest one is
the second office building. Besides, the first office building is
very famous about it’s structure, which is said to be the
imitation of Notre-Dame. Moreover, this building took in
super structure, which make the building stronger for any
kinds of disaster such as earthquake.

Mouri Garden
Mouri garden belonged to an old Japanese samurai,
Mouri kai-no kami. Surprisingly, this beautiful garden
is at Roppongi district, which is one of the biggest
business cities in Japan. When you walk around there,
you will also find many kinds of sky scrapers, such as
Roppongi hills.
In other words, you can enjoy both Japanese old
tradition and new culture in Roppongi.
6-Roppongi Minato-ku Tokyo
Access: 0 minute’s walk from Roppongi station
Omote-sando Hills
Omote-sando Hills is designed by Tadao Ando. The
zelkova trees in front of the building are not so tall
that he made the building height low. This
movement is surprising for everyone who concerns
with architecture. That’s because recent modern
architectures are mostly very high, skyscrapers.
However, his vivid idea is successful and the total
balance of the landscape is so elegant. I personally
think Omote-sando Hills is the most successful case
of a fresh idea.
4-12-10 Jingu-mae Shibuya-ku Tokyo
Access: 5 minute’s walk from Harajuku
station(JR line)
These 10 architectures are all our recommendations. Where to go or when
to go is up to you. Besides, the purpose of our guide, of course, depends on
you. If you use our guide positively in your everyday life, that’s our pleasure.
Summer will come soon. As you know, pleasant time seem to pass very
fast. However, in order enjoy it, you firstly decide what to do, taking a lot of

time and think carefully about where to go….
Job in Asakusa
BY SAORI TAKIZAWA
Interview with worker in Asakusa
In one sid
Roppongi has many
attractive modern buildings and latest shops. But, people work
too hard, so it may be strained.
I:
Thirdly, please tell me about English. In Asakusa or this
shop, how do you receive foreign travelers?
C:
The Asakusa’s food union has English lessons.
Moreover,
In this shop, we hangs up a sign; “English available”. So,
we request staffs to learn how to take orders and make
menu written in English. However, it is difficult to explain
about our menu.
I:
How do you study English?
C:
In Asakusa, there are many English-speakers, so I speak
English in my daily life.
I:
Finally, do you have any messages to university students?
C:
Many university students are energetic and tidy, but some of them looks dispirited.
I want them to become energetic and try to do everything.

Kawaii!
BY SAORI TAKIZAWA
“Kawaii” has become a prominent aspect
of Japanese popular culture, clothing, food,
entertainment, toys, personal appearance,
behavior, and mannerisms.
Kawaii can also refer to people, typically
girls who use make-up and costumes to
resemble the characters in anime (Japanese
cartoon) magazines. This is related to
another popular trend in Japan that's
spreading around the world: cosplay. Cosplay
is an example of the common Japanese
practice of blending English words (in this
case, costume and play) to create new terms.
Interview with Cosplayers
(“I” means Interviewer, “C” means Cosplayer. )
I: Why did you start cosplay?
C: Because we love characters! For example, I wear the costume of Japanese computer
game, ”Higurashi no naku koro”.
I: How long have you done cosplay?
C: I enjoy it for 10 years.
I: Where do you enjoy cosplay?
C: We have events in Ariake, Akihabara, Korakuen and Utsunomiya.
I: How many people does take part in these events?
C: About 500 people take part in cosplay’s evevnts. In the big events of manga, there are
2000 people.
I: That’s too large-scale! Then, how did you get this costume?
C: I made it. But some people buy costumes.
I: What’s the attraction of cosplay for you?
C: I can do cosplay only now, so cosplay gives me precious memories.
Tokyo Art Navi

What is your impression of contemporary arts? Many people may think
contemporary arts are difficult and mysterious. However, if you try to see
them deliberately, they show you new attractions. Though the famous picture
is also good, let’s go to see CONTEMPORARY ARTS!
■The Ueno Royal Museum
Ueno has many museums; Tokyo National Museum,
Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum and The National
Museum of Western Art etc. Most of them exhibit
traditional and famous arts. But, the Ueno Royal
Museum plans many contemporary and unique arts
exhibitions.
The example is ”Art de Saurau”. This exhibition
presents two leading Japanese contemporary artists.
Makoto Aida (1965~) has created powerful and
conceptually fresh works. His versatility - he works
with media ranging from painting, photography and
installations to novels, manga, urban plans and stage
art direction - has influenced many creators. Akira
Yamaguchi (1969~) fuses traditional techniques of
Japanese painting with a contemporary aesthetic.
His highly detailed Surrealist paintings, in which
imagd of the past, present and future live together,
have been well received internationally.
Also, the grand prize of The Ueno Royal Museum is regarded as young
contemporary artist’s gateway to success, so the art field pays attention to this
museum. This museum is good to know the trend of arts in the future.

Cool Japanese Artists
in 2007
●●●
●Tabaimo
Tabaimo’s works are based on elements of Edo era and it represents “Contemporary Underground
Tokyo”. Looking at her animation, one is struck both by the symbols of Japanese culture (cranes,
chrysanthemums, the Japanese flag) and by prosaic images such as commuter trains and sidewalk
crossings. Tabaimo place them in sometimes shocking contexts to provoke her audience into
thinking more deeply about societal issues.
●Yoshitomo Nara
Yoshitomo Nara's work is influenced by Japanese comic books (manga) but he is unique in the
contemporary art scene for his typically cute and figures with a horror like image. Nara's tapping
into horror through the medium of the innocent child is particularly bitterness in Japan's controlled
society of rigid language and social structures, especially considering recent shockingly violent
crimes in Japan. Nara's work really instills the viewer with a parallel of the innocence of children
and the evil nature of humanity, or the fall from grace. Nara is also a Pop artist, representing works
from his generation youth, and mass producing them for your home.
●Fuyuko Matsui
She relies on traditional techniques yet at the same time portrays the world of spirits and ghosts,
a subject matter far removed from the traditional Japanese theme of the beauty of nature. Her
work is a style of dark mystery. All of Matsui's works convey a sense of the ominousness. Though all
are of the Nihonga school, they also bring together diverse cultural elements, as well as mixing
madness and sanity, creating a world filled with intense and unforgettable apparitions.

TOKYO is one of the most exciting cities with music in Japan. Tokyo has a lot of
sophisticated music and a lot of big events about music. Most people living in Tokyo
have passionate concerns for music and musical festival.
So, I introduce a famous musical festival in Tokyo, TOKYO JAZZ FESTIVAL 2007.
This International Jazz Festival was launched in 2002.
The concepts of TOKYO JAZZ are "transmitting new culture" "ensuring jazz lives on and develops" and
"cultural cross-overs".
Big name artists from Japan and around the world converge in one location to bring you a dream
performance that crosses generations and borders!
Tokyo International Forum, situated in the Marunouchi area, in the heart of Tokyo, will be the center
of our festival. We will be transmitting a sound that stretches beyond generations and beyond borders,
from Marunouchi towards the world.
Come and experience the new sound of TOKYO JAZZ. Artists coming together from all over the world
to play music that stretches beyond generations, beyond borders.

JAZZ is a kind of music style.
JAZZ was born in America. It is a fusion of European and African music.
The European melody is based on harmony. And African melody is based on rhythm.
Why Jazz is a great music is that Jazz gave music new factors at that time. It is a
freedom, humor and vigor. And Jazz spread all over the world, getting over the walls
between the cultures.
Therefore, Jazz’s merit is the fusion over the genres and over the cultures.
Jazz can get over the differences between the races and between the cultures. And it
connects to the concept of TOKYO JAZZ.

Then, I’ll introduce the movie to you now. When Okan who lost its
affection for oton in 1960's came back to the parents' house of
Tikuho with boku. Boku becomes 15 years old in 1970's and entered
art Senior High School of Oita and he left Okan for a small town and
began rooming house life. And boku becomes the beauty size student
and but he graduated after repeating the same grade. And then he
starts to lead a slovenly life. After this the story shows interesting
and impressive contents, but I recommend that you check all this
story.
The original is a work of an autobiography of Lily Frankie, but
when you see this movie, you will feel an attachment on ‘Boku.’
Actors in this movie perform their part in their own way, but it
matches to the original character. A report about this movie says
that the mild presence of Odagiri Joe acts his character very well
and
Okan will win through up to memory throughout the life.

Do you know the famous movie the title of which is ‘Otoko ha turaiyo’?
The movie is well known as ‘tora san’ . As for the movie series, all 48
products was produced by 1995
from 1969 by Shochiku. All
the work made a hit and
became the popular series of
Shochiku, and it was authorized
in Guinness Book of World
Records International Edition
as the movie series that was the
longest in the world at a point in
time beyond 30 products.
This movie directed by Yamada Yoji
and Torasan is acted by Astumi
Kiyoshi who is originally a comedian.
40
↑This is the stage of the story of torasan.
A pattern of the series is consistent. Torajiro loves a heroine to meets in
destination or Shibamata. A heroine has goodwill for Torajiro, too, but it is not love
feelings in many cases and a lover of a heroine appears last and he is rejected by her.
And at last of every story, depressant Torajiro is back to his occupation, stand
business. I think why such a simple story has been
loved by many people so many times, but perhaps
the very simple story make this series attractive
long time.
This is a statue of Torasan built at in
front of shibamata station.

Tokyo is Japanese capital city. And many Japanese people have something special with
Tokyo. It may be because Tokyo has many differences from another city in Japan.
So, I research differences between Tokyo and another city. I compare Tokyo with another
city in Japan so as to make it clear what attracts people to Tokyo.
Why do people want to visit Tokyo?
I carried out some survey about Tokyo and impression of Tokyo.
(But, these include my subjective and personal views and image. So, some people may
think these are wrong.)
・Tokyo’s advantages
There are many advantages of Tokyo.
Tokyo has many facilities for travel and they are excellent. Some people who live
in countryside complain that the number of facilities is small and their poverty.
Moreover Tokyo has many facilities for citizens.
Tokyo is a fashionable city and many people in Tokyo are careful about their
appearance. There are many shops and buildings in Tokyo.
・Tokyo’s disadvantages
Tokyo also has some disadvantages. Prices of commodities in Tokyo are very
high. And the water aren’t delicious. It is reason why many people living in Tokyo
buy mineral water without regard to their prices.
Many people in a street are uneasy and hurry and the street is filled with their
and exhaust gas. And business district in Tokyo has few greens. On the other
hand, Countryside has many fields and natural greens.
According to this survey, it can be said safely that Tokyo is very good place for
visiting and the frontier of cultures in some points. But, Tokyo also has bad
points for living.
I think this is the reason why people who live in another city in Japan and have
never lived in Tokyo want to go to Tokyo.

activities for this magazine will be helpful in future.
Could you enjoy this magazine? It’s our pleasure if you

I came to Tokyo this spring and I didn’t know Tokyo
very much. However, examining Tokyo and Asakusa
helped me know many aspects of Tokyo and through the
process to edit this magazine I came to be interested in
various things in Tokyo. As we introduced in this
magazine, there are various kinds of places and things in
Tokyo and I want to visit and watch them, so I appreciate
to be given the chance to investigate Tokyo.

Asakusa is my favorite town in Tokyo. I
hope you to know better about it and
fascination of it. Thank you!
