The applied design/media program at Allan Hancock College offers a comprehensive foundation for entry into a career in still or digital photoghraphy. An associate in science degree in applied design/ media: photography is designed to prepare you for a creative, fast-paced, hands-on career in the multimedia world as well as for transfer to a bachelor’s degree program in digital media or photography. Our courses cover everything from the development of technical skills, to the history and literature of photography, to the emphasis on developing your own personal visual style. The photography program gives you the opportunity to take a wide variety of courses including black and white, digital, color, alternative processes, photojournalism, portraiture, commercial, and more. Our courses emphasize the development of technical skills, a personal visual style, creativity, and the ability to respond critically to work. As a graduate of the applied design/media: photography program, you will have acquired the skills to use photography in a wide variety of personal and career situations. With a degree in photography you will have a solid understanding of the history, literature, terminology and principles of photography. Your education will leave you proficient in the hardware, materials, and processes of traditional wet photography, color photography, non-silver photography and digital hardware and software. Upon graduation you will have created a portfolio that explores a personal, cultural or documentary idea and which embodies a unique personal vision. As a student you will also have the opportunity to execute a client-generated assignment.
