Alumni Update 8 Dog Wash Information Strutting Success Despite chilly spring weather, this year’s Strutters collectively raised nearly $22,000 for C.A.R.E. coffers. by Janice Cha Who would have thought, in these recessionary times, that we would have had the most successful Strut for Strays in the past decade? That’s exactly what happened on a chilly, blustery Saturday in early May, the day of the 15th annual event. “We had 229 registrants, which is the highest registration turnout since 2000, and almost 50 people more than the annual average of about 180 participants over the last decade,” reports Strut Organizer Megan Lutz. “Altogether we raised nearly $22,000 in support of C.A.R.E.” None of this would have happened without help from many quarters, starting with the Strut’s event sponsors: Mary Summerville, Prairie Shore Properties, who donated the tee-shirts; Chicagoland Tails and Dr. Julia Weertman for the goodie bags; Evanston Subaru in Skokie for refreshments; and the Dog Obedience Group for the Doggie Carnival. Strut 2010 photos can be found online at http://ow.ly/1TkGi. Thanks also goes to C.A.R.E.’s young Shelter Helpers for raising more than $850. The team of junior volunteers, led by Vicky Pasenko, included Kate Ellenwood-Bird, Luca Ferinca, Anna Heinz, Alyssa Horwitz, Julian Wagner and Kurtis Young. Top fundraisers received prizes from local businesses, including Abt Electronics, Charter One Bank, CJ Arthur’s Bar & Grill, Dengeos, Jewel-Osco, Walgreens and Dr. Julia Weertman. And as always, the Strut wouldn’t function without the willing hands of the many C.A.R.E. volunteers who spent the morning setting up, stepping up and cleaning up. April 12, 2010 Dear C.A.R.E., Please accept this donation in honor of our daughter/sister Katherine Saari. On February 15 of this year we lost our sweet girl. She was 24 years old. Katherine was a true animal lover. When Kat left her Massachusetts home to attend Northwestern University, one of the things she missed most was her little beagle, Echo. Kat drew a great deal of enjoyment and comfort from all animals. On her 20th birthday, her then-boyfriend brought her to your shelter to choose a pet. Although she grew up with dogs, she chose a long-haired calico kitty named Lady who had been abandoned in an area apartment. Kat showered Lady with attention. If the cat had any inclination toward classic cat aloofness, she never had a chance. Kat turned Lady into the most affectionate of felines. She brought the cat outside on a leash, took her on road trips in the car and even traveled home with her in the cabin of a Southwest Airlines airplane this past Christmas. Katherine stayed in Chicago after graduation. Our first thoughts upon losing our daughter were that we would bring Lady back to our home in Massachusetts. Once we arrived at the home Kat had shared with her close friend, however, we knew we couldn’t take Lady from him. Lady had transferred the affection Katherine felt for her to her new owner, and brought him a great deal of comfort. April 14 would have been Kat’s 25th birthday. We believe she would be pleased that we have chosen to recognize this day by supporting C.A.R.E., the organization responsible for matching her with Lady. We hope all the pets you place bring as much joy to their new families as Lady brought to Kat. With gratitude, Judy, David, Chrissy & Daniel Saari Hubbardston, Mass. After Kimberly Skic adopted her dog, Angel, from C.A.R.E., she wanted to support the shelter in any way she could. So last December, when she noticed the $500 shelter donation as prize for a pet photo contest sponsored by Glenview State Bank on social networking site Facebook, she jumped. “I posted a cute photo of Angel,” Kimberly says. “A few days later, I was overjoyed to be notified that we were in the top five.” Her next step was to enlist C.A.R.E. Marketing Coordinator Megan Lutz, who helped put out the online call for votes. “When the contest ended a week later, Angel had 219 official votes, winning by 26 votes,” Kimberly says. “It was such a close race that Glenview State Bank decided to make two $500 donations to the animal shelters of the winners. All our hard work paid off. I was very thankful to win the $500 donation for C.A.R.E. It was a perfect touch to the holiday season.” Follow C.A.R.E. on Facebook to keep up to date with our fundraisers and other shelter events: www.facebook.com/CAREevanston Camp Fire Troop Beautifies C.A.R.E. Grounds And Gardens C.A.R.E. Will Take Them Back Sometimes pet adoption decisions get compromised by unforeseen events. It could be that the cat’s or dog’s temperament has changed, or personal issues, or a new baby… Whatever the reason, if you are no longer able to care for the dog or cat you adopted from C.A.R.E.—please bring the animal back to C.A.R.E. We will welcome the pet back and will continue to care for it as before. Please call and leave a message at 847 – 705 – 2653; identify yourself as a past adopter so we can help you immediately. www.care-evanston.org If you’ve visited C.A.R.E. recently and noticed colorful flowers and a general spiffiness to the grounds, it’s all thanks to Volunteer Laura Frisch, her Co-leader Renate Toth and their Camp Fire USA troop from Morton Grove. In May, nine troop members and several parents organized a spring clean-up for the C.A.R.E. garden areas. “We planted marigolds and geraniums to add a little color while the perennials grow in,” Laura says. “The marigolds are pretty hardy, so don’t worry if a dog tramples them.” The younger kids weeded, planted, watered and mulched while the older boys re-set the paving stones near the back run exit and added more river rocks. “Now the dogs can come straight out and pee without getting their paws muddy,” Laura says. Cham p and they touched noses through the baby gate. The rest has been history. Mario has brought so much joy to my home, to me and to my dog. I truly feel that somehow Monty handpicked this fellow for us.” Ton ka When Martha Roland walked into the shelter at C.A.R.E. in Evanston a year ago July, Champ, a big, gray cat with golden eyes, immediately caught her attention. “He seemed to pose against the bars of his cage, trying desperately to catch my eye,” says Martha, who didn’t “click” with the first cat the adoption counselor showed her. “Then she brought in Champ. He purred and kneaded the table with his front paws to show he was comfortable. I knew he was the cat for me.” These days, Champ is the proverbial king of his castle. “He follows me around like a dog and greets me at the door when I come home,” Martha adds. “He loves to sit by the balcony door and chatter at birds. He’s always ready to pounce on his toy rat or bounce around after the laser beam. Champ is the greatest pet I could ever hope for. I can’t imagine life without my pal.” Mar io Du ncan “My name is Tonka. I’m an English Bulldog who was adopted about a year ago. I was found by the Evanston police and brought to C.A.R.E., where they named me Beyonce. I was in really bad health when I arrived at the shelter—way underweight, with a wound on the top of my head. I’m happy to report that I’ve made a full recovery. Now I live in a loving home where I can make my new family laugh at all of my sounds. I love to snore and snort as loud as I can. And I adore mini tennis balls, with squeakers of course. When I’m not bullying my two bigger sisters (a Mastiff and a Great Dane), I’m following my mom everywhere to get all the love I can. Who knew life could be so good?!” (Tonka’s parents are Corrie Svendsen and Lyz Glynn.) Ki r by In April Mario (C.A.R.E. name Enzio) and his person, Mary Ann Mayfield, celebrated his one-year adoption-from-C.A.R.E. anniversary. Mario’s arrival at Mary Ann’s home followed the tragic and untimely loss of her cat, Monty, who had been best buddies with the family dog, Phoebe. “I knew Phoebe missed Monty’s company and stimulation, but I didn’t realize how much she had been grieving until she laid eyes on Mario for the first time,” Mary Ann says. “The dog began to practically weep with joy. At first Mario startled, then he approached the dog dog…,” then walked through the door holding a scruffy Border Terrier mix with the eyes of an angel. When placed on the surgical table, Kirby pushed himself away from the tech’s arms, went over to the doctor, put his front legs around her neck and nuzzled under her chin. “Who could resist?” says Dr. Klaus, who, despite having two cats and two dogs already and not being in the market for a new pet, brought the dog home the next day. Nine months later, she reports that Kirby has “become best buddies with Sydney, the Scottie, and Opal, the Cairn. His only fault: he doesn’t understand the concept of ‘cat’ and can’t understand why they won’t play as the other dogs do. Kirby has grown in size and confidence. I’m glad I gave into his decision to adopt me.” It was another surgery day for Dr. Joan Kraus, a veterinarian at McCormick Animal Hospital in Evanston. Kirby was a stray from C.A.R.E., there to be neutered. The vet-tech working with Dr. Kraus said, “Wait until you see this Duncan, an energetic young chocolate brown pit bull mix formerly known as King, found a home in May with C.A.R.E. kennel volunteers Diva and Michael Mihelic. After spending nearly 11 months at the shelter Duncan is very excited to finally be out in the world. His new home includes a Chihuahua, a cat and another pit bull. In addition to ongoing obedience training, Duncan has been learning new skills such as swimming. “Initially Duncan was afraid of water when we took him to the dog beach,” Michael says. “Seeing other dogs playing in the water made him forget his fear and join in the chase games. Duncan is also learning to fetch his water toys and to swim better.” These days Duncan is a calmer, happier dog. “He’s so good-natured we can take him practically anywhere,” Michael adds. “We’re looking forward to having a fun summer together, and beyond.” www.care-evanston.org Community Animal Rescue Effort F O R T H E E V A N S T O N A N I M A L S H E LT E R 2310 Oakton Street Evanston, Illinois 60202 vo i c e mai l 847 – 705 – 2653 w e b www.care-evanston.org NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION U.S. POSTAGE PA I D PERMIT NO. 81 EVANSTON, IL ;&9&J&=&^gjl`]=nYfklgf9faeYdK`]dl]j Hj]k]flkl`]K]hl]eZ]j*()( dog wash KLJ%#nail trimming $10 KYlmj\Yq$K]hl]eZ]j))l` 1Y&e&lg*h&e& =nYfklgf9faeYdK`]dl]j *+)(GYclgfKl& =nYfklgf$AD&.(*(* Formoreinformationcall(847)705-2653 orvisitwww.care-evanston.org
