FriendsofLaurelwoodArboretum(FOLA).Afteryearsofplanning,collaborating,
fundraising,designingandconstruction,weareproudtodedicatethisbeautifulnew
facilityatLaurelwoodArboretum.
TheKnippenbergCenterforEducationwillwelcomevisitorsandhostamenuof
educationalprogramsandactivitiesforWayneandsurroundingcommunities.Ithasa
horticulturalresearchlibraryandseatingareaswherevisitorscanrelaxandbrowsethrough
thecollectionofbooksandmagazines.Therearealsohandicapped-accessiblerestrooms.
TheadjacentEducationalGreenhousewillprovideopportunitiesforhands-onhorticultural
experiencestocomplementprogramsattheKnippenbergCenter.TheNativePlant
DemonstrationGardenwillserveaslandscapingforthecentercomplexandwillfeature
plantsthatarenativetonorthernNewJersey.OurExecutiveDirector,ElaineFogerty,is
developingprogramsthatexplaintheroleofnativeplantsintheenvironmentandtheir
creativeuseinhomelandscapes.

PRESERVING THE LEGACY
JohnandDorothyKnippenberg
purchasedparcelsoflandacrossthe
streetfromtheirPinesLakehomein
Wayne,NewJerseyfromthePinesLake
Companyinthe1940sand1950s.They
operatedtheir30-acrewoodland,known
asLaurelwoodGardens,asacommercial
nurserythatspecializedinrhododendrons
andazaleas.Theysoonbecamewidely
knownamonggrowersontheeastand
westcoastsforspecializinginhybridizing.
DorothyKnippenbergbeganhybridizing
rhododendronsin1955.Shestrovefor
interestingandimprovedplants,suchas
hardylarge-leavedvarietiesandthose
withgreaterflowersubstanceandlater
bloom.Shewasaknowledgeable
horticulturalistwhoencouragedothersto
appreciaterhododendronsandenjoy
growingthem.DorothyandJohn
hybridizedandnamedeightcultivarsof
rhododendronsthatwereregisteredby
theAmericanRhododendronSocietyand
RoyalHorticulturalSociety:“Blush
Button,”“CarolineGem,”“HardyGiant,”
“BigWilly,”“BurgundyCherry,”“Laurel
Pink,”“LaurelwoodSnowBunting”and
“WaynePink.”

Laurelwood.Theyimportedplantsfrom
Englandanddonatedcuttings,seedsand
pollentogrowersallovertheworld.Over
theyears,theyraisedand/orhybridized
approximately50newrhododendrons.
Dorothy’scommitmenttorhododendrons
wasformallyacknowledgedin1973,
whenshewasawardedaBronzeMedal
bytheNewYorkChapteroftheAmerican
RhododendronSocietyinappreciationfor
herdevotiontothegenus
Rhododendron.In1992,hybridizer
NathanielHessofSandsPoint,New
York,namedandregisteredthe“Dorothy
Knippenberg”rhododendroninherhonor.
Bloominginmid-May,thefragrantshrub
displaysheavy,openlyfunnel-shaped
flowersthatarewhitewithreddishorange
dorsalspotting.

mightbeabletoprovidecuttings.

A GENEROUS GIFT TO
THE TOWNSHIP OF
WAYNE
In1960,theKnippenbergsenteredinto
anAgreementofUnderstandingwiththe
TownshipofWaynetodonatetheentire
30acresofLaurelwoodtothetownship
inordertocreateapublicparkaftertheir
deaths.Oneconditionoftheagreement
wasthattheybeallowedtocultivateand
maintainthepropertywithoutrestrictions
aslongasoneofthemlived.The
agreementprovidedforthepropertyto
beconveyedinparcelsovertime,which
theydidbetween1961and1975.
Dorothyexpressedhervisionforthe
propertysheandJohnhadsolovingly
developedwhenshetoldtheAmerican
RhododendronSocietygatheringthat
LaurelwoodGardenswould,inherwords,
“becomeapublicrhododendronpark
followingourlifetime.”
AfterJohn’sdeathin1994,Dorothy
continuedtosuperviseandworkinthe
gardens.Duringthistime,asmall
grassrootscommunitygroupformedto
supportDorothyinmaintainingthe
propertyandensuringitsfutureasa
publicpark.In2003,thisgroupwas
formalizedasFriendsofLaurelwood
Arboretum(FOLA),a501(c)(3)non-profit
corporation.
AfterDorothy’sdeathin2006,aformal
partnershipwasformedbetweenFOLA
andtheTownshipofWayne.Laurelwood
Arboretumbecamepartofthepark
system,andFOLAassumedresponsibility
formaintainingandimprovingthe
property’shorticulturalinheritance.

SENSORY GARDEN
FriendsofLaurelwoodArboretumhas
createdaunique,barrier-freegarden
wherevisitorsofallabilitiescan
experiencenature.Itisdesignedwith
widepathwaysthatcanbenegotiatedby
wheelchairsandraisedflowerbedsthat
encouragetheuseofallfivesenses—
touch,taste,smell,sightandsound.
AlthoughthedesignoftheSensory
Gardenaddressestheneedsofvisitors
withchallenges,italsoprovidesvolunteer
andeducationalopportunitiesforthe
generalpublic.The“learningcircle”isa
placeforquietcontemplationandcanalso
bethesettingforeducationalgatherings.
LaurelwoodArboretumisoneofveryfew
publicparksintheareathatfeaturesa
spacedesignedspecificallyforchildren
andadultswhoarevisually,physicallyor
emotionallychallenged.Thisspecialplace
wasfundedbythePassaicCountyOpen
SpaceandFarmlandPreservationTrust,
theLionsClubsofWayneandWest
Milford,WayneTownship,andFOLA.All
theplanningandplantingwasdoneby
volunteers.Thegardenisrecreatedanew
eachyearandmaintainedbythe
horticulturalstaffandFOLAvolunteers.

SOUTH ROCK GARDEN
DorothyKnippenberghadaspecial
interestinrockgardensandcreatedwhat
isknownastheSouthRockGardenat
Laurelwoodmanyyearsago.The
WatnongChapteroftheNorthAmerican
RockGardenSocietyispartneringwith
FOLA’sstaffandvolunteerstorestorethis
displaygarden,whichhasdeteriorated
overtheyears.
ThefirstgroupofWatnongChapter
volunteerscametoLaurelwoodinthe
springof2014tobeginaninitial
explorationinasmallareaoftherock
garden.Theyexcavatedinaneffortto
uncoverthetufa,thelimestonerocksthat
wereintegraltotheoriginaldesign.The
designatedareawasdugtoaboutthree
feetdown,andanyplantsthatcouldbe
savedwerepottedup.Allrockswereset
asideforlateruse.Thegrouplater
returnedtorebuildtheareawithtufaand
qualitysoil.In2015,theywillbegin
restoringandplanting.

expectstoscheduleworkshopsand
demonstrationsatLaurelwoodinthe
future.Whentheirworkiscompleted,the
SouthRockGardenwillreflectDorothy’s
originalvision.
NATIVE PLANT DEMONSTRATION GARDEN

hasbeenawardeda$14,500grant
fromtheStanleySmithHorticultural
TrustforthedevelopmentofaNative
PlantDemonstrationGardenat
LaurelwoodArboretum.Thefunds
willbesupplementedwitha$5,000
grantfromtheIraA.Roschelle,M.D.
FamilyFoundation.
TheCalifornia-basedStanleySmith
HorticulturalTrustsupports
educationandresearchin
ornamentalhorticultureinpublicly
supported,tax-exempt
organizations,primarilyinNorthand
SouthAmerica.“Weareverypleased
tohavesecuredthisgrantaftera
verycompetitiveapplication
process,”saidFOLAPresidentAlice
Moskowitz.“TheNativePlant
DemonstrationGardenwillhelpto
positionLaurelwoodasanimportant
centerforhorticulturaleducationin
northernNewJerseyandmost
particularlyinPassaicCounty.”

Gardenatthefrontofthe
KnippenbergCenterforEducation.
Interpretivesignswilldirectvisitors
aroundthegarden,describingthe
plants,theirvaluetothe
environment,andtheirroleinhome
landscapes.FOLA’sEducation
CommitteewillworkwithExecutive
DirectorElaineFogertytodevelopa
varietyofprogramsforchildrenand
adultsthatexplaintheroleofnative
plantsintheenvironment.
Homeownersarebecoming
increasinglyawareofthecriticalrole
ofnativeplantsintheenvironment
andwanttolearnwhichnativeplants
aresuitablefortheirownlandscapes.
TheDemonstrationGardenwill
showcasethebestnativeplantsfor
homelandscapesinourregion.
Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis),nativetoeasternNorthAmerica,isnotedfor
itsstunningpea-likerose-purpleflowerswhichbloomprofuselyonbare
branchesinearlyspringbeforefoliageemerges.

“IncorporatingNativePlantsinYour
ResidentialLandscape,”nativeplantsare
speciesthatwerepresentatthe
beginningoftheEuropeansettlementof
NorthAmerica.Theseareplantsthat,
overtime,haveevolvedtogrowina
specificregion.

wascreatedbyagroupofDorothy
Knippenberg’sfriendswhowanted
toensurethatthearboretumwould
bepreservedasanaturaloasisasit
transitionedtoaWayneTownship
publicpark.Gradually,thisdedicated
groupbegantocollectdonations
andbuildmembership.In2003,
FOLAwasincorporatedasa
501(c)(3)nonprofitorganization.
WhenDorothydiedin2006,the
organizationassumedresponsibility
formanagementofthearboretum,in
accordancewithanagreementwith
WayneTownship.
Today,FriendsofLaurelwood
Arboretumisanall-volunteer
nonprofitorganizationwhosemission
istopreserve,promoteandimprove
thearboretumandprovide
opportunitiesforhorticultural
appreciationandeducationthrough
publicprogramsandoutreach
activities.MembershipinFOLAhas
growntomorethan300.The
organizationisfundedby
membershipdues,plantsalesand
donationsfromindividualsand
businesses.
TheFOLABoardofDirectorsand
ExecutiveDirectorElaineFogerty
directtheactivitiesofmorethan200
onsiteandoff-sitevolunteers.
Volunteersweed,plant,pruneand
helpbeautifythearboretum.Some
volunteerskeepLaurelwoodsafe
andaccessiblebyrepairingits
infrastructure.Othersprovidetours
ofthearboretumorleadeducational
andoutreachprograms.Lastyear,
volunteerscontributedmorethan
9,633hours,valuedatanestimated
$244,004.(basedonthenationally
acceptedvolunteerhourlyrate).

SELF-GUIDED TOUR
Itallbeganmorethan75yearsago,whenDorothy
andJohnKnippenberg,wholivedonPinesLake
DriveinWayne,purchaseda30-acreproperty
acrossfromtheirhomeanddevelopeda
commercialnurseryknownasLaurelwood
Gardens.Patchesoflawnthroughoutthe
arboretumwereoriginallyplantingbedsforthe
nursery,whichspecializedinrhododendronsand
azaleas.Aftertheyclosedthenursery,the
Knippenbergsbegantransformingitintowhatwe
nowknowasLaurelwoodArboretum.
Inthe1960s,theKnippenbergsdeededthe
propertytotheTownshipofWayne.Onecondition
oftheagreementwasthattheycouldcultivateand
maintainLaurelwoodwithoutrestrictionaslongas
oneofthemlived.Dorothycontinuedtomaintain
thegardens—withhelpfromfriendsand
volunteers—untilherdeathattheageof94.A
grassrootsgroupwasformedtosupportherefforts,
andin2003itwasincorporatedasthenonprofit
FriendsofLaurelwoodArboretum(FOLA).
WhenDorothydiedin2006,FOLAassumed
responsibilityformanagementofthearboretum,in
accordancewithanagreementwithWayne
Township.Thearboretumismanagedentirelyby
thisall-volunteerorganizationwiththefervorto
matchDorothy’spassionforLaurelwood.
A Walk Thro
BeginyourvisitattheKnippenbergCenterfor
Education.Pickupsomeinformationabouteventsand
perhapsvisittheHorticulturalReferenceLibrary.Sitin
comfort,andbrowsethroughaninterestingbookor
magazine.Thecenterprovidesspaceforeducational
programs,exhibits,andcommunityactivitiesandhas
handicapped-accessiblerestrooms.Fundingwas
providedbythePassaicCountyOpenSpaceand
FarmlandPreservationTrust,WayneTownship.Allthe
furniture,rugs,electronicequipmentandmorewere
generouslydonatedbylocalsupporters.Theadjacent
EducationalGreenhousecomplementsthecenter,
offeringopportunitiesforhands-onprogramsand
activities.

NativePlantDemonstrationGardenwillprovidelandscapingfor
thecentercomplexandopportunitiesforprogramsaboutNew
Jersey’snativeplantsandhowhomeownerscansupportthe
environmentbytheirlandscapingchoices.Fundingforthe
gardenwasprovidedbytheStanleySmithHorticulturalTrust
andtheIraA.Roschelle,MDFamilyFoundation.
2. Turnleftfromthecenter,pastthepavilion.Noticethe
magnificentUmbrellaPineontheright.Itssizeindicatesitwas
oneofthefirstrareornamentalsplantedbytheKnippenbergs.
3. ContinuetowardValeRoad.OnyourrightistheSensory
Garden,withitsabundanceofcolorfulblooms,interesting
textures,andrestfulsounds.Thisuniquespacehaswide
pathwaysthatcanbenegotiatedbywheelchairsandraised
flowerbedsthatencouragetheuseofallfivesenses—touch,
taste,smell,sightandsound.Thegardensarecreatedanew
eachyearandmaintainedbythehorticulturalstaffandFOLA
rough the Arboretum …
volunteers.ThisareaoncehadabrailletrailcreatedbyDorothy
Knippenbergandalocalgirlscout.TheLionsClubofWayne
initiatedanewplanthatwouldbetterservepeoplewithvisual,
physicalandemotionalchallenges.TheSensoryGardenwas
fundedbythePassaicCountyBoardofFreeholders,theLions
ClubofWayne,andFOLA.
4. TurnaroundandproceedpastthepavilionandupHomeHill.
AtthetopontherightisabeautifulAdirondackbench
handcraftedbyartistDavidRobinsonanddonatedbya
longtimefriendoftheKnippenbergs.Behindthebenchisthe
colorfulSummerGarden,createdinmemoryofDorothy.
Lookforthesmall-leafedGuyNearingrhododendronsonthe
leftcornerofHomeHillandTheFairway.GuyNearing(18901986)wasagiftedbotanist,artist,chessmaster,poet,inventor,
folkdancerandaninternationallyknownexpertinhollies,
rhododendrons,andlichens.HeownedtwonurseriesinNew
Jersey,wherehehybridizedhardyanddwarfrhododendrons.
Throughoutthearboretum,manyrhododendronsremain
unnamed.FOLA’srhododendronidentificationcommitteeis
researchingDorothy’snotesandothersourcesinaneffortto
identifythem.
Theoriginalpropagationgreenhouseontheleftiscurrently
usedbyFOLAvolunteerstopropagateplantsfordisplay
andreplacementinthearboretumandforplantsales.
AheadisLaurelPond,oneofthefirstconstructionprojects
inthearboretum.Anexpansionofanexistingstreamthat
helpstomanagedrainageandoccasionalseasonalhigh
water,itistheprimaryirrigationsourceforthearboretum.
5. TurnleftalongAzaleaWay.Thisisaspectacularwalkin
mid-MaywhenhybridazaleasbredbyJosephGable(18861972)ofPennsylvaniaareinbloom.Amongthemare:
Othello,Snow,andsweet-scentedRoseGreeley,allplanted
bytheKnippenbergs.NativeorangedeciduousFlame
Azaleascoverpartoftheslope.

6. Atthebottomofagentledescentisamagnificent
CedarofLebanontreeontheleft.Justbeyondisthe
KnippenbergMemorialGazebo,constructedonthesite
whereDorothyandhervolunteerswouldsitonaringof
stumpsafteralongworksession,eatingcrackersand
cheeseandenjoyingthepond.Thegazebowascreated
byartistDavidRobinsonusingwoodofthenativeosage
orangeandredcedar.Fundswereprovidedbya
longtimeclosefriendofDorothyKnippenberg.
7. AfterturningrightatthegazeboontoBrookRoad,the
startofDorothy’sWayisontheleft,markedbyatrellis
attheedgeofthewoods.This500-footfootpath
traversesagentleslopeparalleltoBrookRoad.Itis
believedthatmanyoftherhododendronsalongits
lengthwerepartofaKnippenberghybridtrialarea.The
rhododendronsareusuallyinbloominlateMay.The
pathtakesyouupcloseunderandamongthehuge
rhododendrons.Whatawaytoseethesefantastic
blooms!Thememorialtrailwasconstructedby
volunteersofallages,andthewoodenarborsateach
endwereEagleScoutprojects.
themid-Atlanticregion.Ontheleftsidearerhododendrons
hybridizedbyNearing,GableandthenDexter.
JohnandDorothywereknownforrarethingsandloved
unusualvarieties.Therewasnotissuecultureintheirtime,so
theypropagatedbytakingcuttingsandlayering.Theyspread
theirrhodiesthroughoutthecommunitybygivingthemaway.
ManyhomesintheareahaveKnippenbergrhodiesintheir
landscaping.
10. ProceedingalongRidgeRoadbringsyoutotheSpring
Garden.DirectlyfacingyouisastatuesqueKousaDogwood,
underplantedwithacolorfuldisplayofbulbsinfullbloom
throughoutAprilintoMay.
TurnrightontoEasyWay,headingbacktowardthe
KnippenbergCenter.Thehillsideiscoveredinearlysummer
withWhiteFoxglove,(butloyaltoDorothy’swishes,staffand
volunteersremoveerrantpinkonesthatoccasionallyappear).
Alternatively,insteadofturningrightatthegazeboonto
BrookRoad,turnleftandcontinueintheotherdirection
onBrookRoadpastseveralbridgesbuiltbyBoy
Scouts.Seeifyoucanspotthe“fairytree”andthe“door
tonowhere.”Alongthewayyouwillpasstallwhite
oaks,magnolias,ariverbirch,andontheleft,a
magnificentclimbinghydrangeareachinghighintothe
upperstoryofthecanopy.
8. AtthefarendofBrookRoadistheSouthRock
Garden.OneofDorothy’sfavoritegardens,ithasbeen
maintainedbyRutgersMasterGardenersofPassaic
Countyvolunteersandiscurrentlybeingrenovatedby
membersoftheWatnongChapteroftheNorthAmerica
RockGardenSocietyandFOLAvolunteers.Thegarden
alsofeaturesabridgebuiltbyEagleScouts.
Eachyear,thearboretumbenefitsfromtheworkofmore
than200volunteerswhowork10,000hoursorso.It’sa
wayoflifeatthearboretum–auniquepublic/private
arrangementthat’sallaboutpassionforplantsand
gardensandrespectforthosewhohavecomebefore.
CurvingtotheleftbringsyouupRidgeRoadwhere
acid-lovingshrubs,tallhemlocktreesandlarge-leaf
rhododendronsdominatethegardenvignettes.AnEdith
BogueSouthernMagnoliarisesintoviewontherightat
LongValleyRoad–thecold-hardiestmagnoliawith
huge,fragrantflowersinJuly.
