INTRODUCTION
Always a fan of UK film, Toronto International
Film Festival (TIFF) includes an unprecedented
number of British Films in its programme for
2015. Over 40 titles are screening across
the Festival, including those which form the
significant City To City focus on London.
This catalogue includes details of the UK
productions and official co-productions
showing in the Festival, including the short films
selected.
The key UK Film organisations are represented
in Toronto under the single umbrella of WE ARE
UK FILM, a grouping of UK film commissions,
national and regional agencies and sales
companies. Together we provide clear
information about our outstanding locations,
services, films and talent, and we represent
the UK Film industry, enabling connections
with both national and international partners.
In partnership with WE ARE UK FILM, this
Catalogue is a resource complied by British
Council Film, which acts as a link between UK
films and filmmakers and new international
audiences. British Council Film works with a
range of programme selector teams from the
world’s premiere international film festivals,
including the team from TIFF, to arrange
preview screenings in London of the best new
British films. Each catalogue is compiled as a
printable PDF and is intended as a reference
tool to assist festival programmers, film buyers
and sales agents, as well as other filmmakers,
students, statisticians and film historians.
We also collate an online database of UK films
as they go into pre-production, as well as an
exhaustive British Films Directory listing all UK
shorts and features produced since 1998.
You can view the entire British Films Directory,
as well as further Directories listing both
Filmmakers and Festivals, at
www.britishcouncil.org/film.

“I write this film as a rumination on Thailand, a
feverish nation. It will be the first film that takes
place entirely in my hometown, Khon Kaen. It’s also
a very personal portrait of the places that have
latched onto me like parasites - the elementary
school, the hospital, the library, the lake. Like the
sleepers in this film, I shun the malady of reality,
and together we take refuge in dreams of forever.”

The Danish Girl
Synopsis

living like feral creatures in a camouflaged hole in
the middle of a vast forest somewhere in France.

freak wildfire. Traumatised to the bone, the couple
vanished and ended up where they are. She does
not want to return to civilisation because only here
she feels she can make amends. Her husband, on
the other hand, finds the constant reminder of their
misfortune increasingly unbearable. The couple’s
relationship reaches breaking point and repressed
emotions come bursting out to the surface.

of artists Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener (portrayed
by Academy Award® winner Eddie Redmayne and

Eye in the Sky
High-Rise
Synopsis
Synopsis
A timely thriller set in the world of remotely piloted
aircraft warfare. A terrorist-targeting drone mission
becomes a flashpoint when a civilian girl enters the
kill zone.
Based on the novel by J. G. Ballard: London, 1975. A
slick apartment tower rises above the Thames, the
beginnings of what will soon become the world’s biggest
financial hub. Dominating the landscape, it is simply
called the HIGH-RISE... its address a mark of exclusivity.
Its newest resident is Robert Laing, an ambitious young
doctor utterly seduced by the lifestyle and cutting-edge
technology the high-rise has to offer. He is introduced
to the seedy underbelly of the high-rise by Wilder, a
charismatic provocateur. The cracks in this apparently
flawless society grow rapidly, and Laing is shocked
at the depravity he sees. Life in the high-rise quickly
descends into madness and violence, and Laing finds
himself amongst the marauding hordes of bloodthirsty
tenants who take over the building, floor by floor.

(Ya Tayr El Tayer)
Invention
Synopsis
A young boy in Gaza, Mohammad Assaf, dreams
of singing in the Cairo Opera House with his sister
and best friend, Nour. One day, Nour collapses and
is rushed to the hospital where it is discovered

Mohammad with a dying wish that someday, he will

lifetime.
Synopsis
Shot in Paris, São Paulo and Toronto, acclaimed
Canadian contemporary artist Mark Lewis’s film
captures the ever-changing textures of these
cities through moving images of glass, light,
shadows and reflections. Offering a homage to
the city symphony films of the 1920s, while also
juxtaposing modernist architecture with the
compositional structures of old master paintings.
Directed by Academy Award® nominee Hany AbuAssad and based on the incredible true story of
Mohammad Assaf, the Gazan wedding singer who
became a worldwide sensation after winning ‘Arab
Idol’ in 2013.

Synopsis
Synopsis
London, 1997; the British music industry is on a
winning streak. Britpop bands Blur, Oasis, The Verve
rule the airwaves and Cool Britannia is in full swing.
27-year-old A&R man Steven Stelfox is slashing and
burning his way through the music business, a world
where ‘no one knows anything’ and where careers
are made and broken by chance and the fickle tastes
of the general public. Fuelled by greed, ambition and
inhuman quantities of drugs, Stelfox lives the dream, as
he searches for his next hit record. But as the hits dry
up and the industry begins to change, Stelfox takes the
concept of “killer tunes” to a murderous new level in a
desperate attempt to salvage his career.
A patrol of British paratroopers in Afghanistan find
themselves caught in the middle of a deathtrap,
courageously fighting for each other’s lives in a
minefield where the next step could be their last.
A suspense thriller based on the true story of the
bravery and brotherhood that took place on the
Kajaki Dam.

London Road
The Man Who Knew Infinity
Synopsis
Synopsis
A true story of friendship that forever changed
mathematics. In 1913, Ramanujan (Dev Patel), a
self-taught Indian mathematics genius traveled to
Trinity College, Cambridge, where he forged a bond
with his mentor, the eccentric professor GH Hardy
(Jeremy Irons), and fought to reveal his mathematic
genius to the world.
‘London Road’ documents the events that shook
Suffolk in 2006, when the quiet rural town of Ipswich
was shattered by the discovery of the bodies of five
women. The residents of London Road had struggled
for years with frequent soliciting and kerb-crawling on
their street. The film follows the community who found
themselves at the epicentre of the tragic events. Using
their own words set to an innovative musical score,
‘London Road’ tells a moving story of ordinary people
coming together during the darkest of experiences.
The original musical drama ‘London Road’ was hailed
as a remarkable, ground-breaking work during two sellout runs at the UK’s National Theatre. This feature film
adaptation reunites the creative team of Alecky Blythe,
Adam Cork and Rufus Norris with the original cast, and
also features an ensemble cast of UK acting talent.

Synopsis
Synopsis
In a rural Indian village, four ordinary women
begin to throw off the traditions that hold them in
servitude, and question the status quo that favours
men and ostracizes women for being educated and
opinionated.
Sandy leads a comfortable life in Belfast. He is
a university professor and a regular guest on a
popular television arts programme, and his one
novel, though published many years ago, is still in
print and regarded a classic. But Sandy has a habit
of nicking things. Shoplifting has become the one
little thrill in his overly domesticated life — but when
Sandy gets caught by Robert, a desperately lonely
security guard, his life is turned inside out.

The Program
The Sky Trembles and
The Earth Is Afraid...
Synopsis
Synopsis
‘The Sky Trembles and the Earth is Afraid and the
Two Eyes Are Not Brothers’ [the complete title
of this piece] is partially inspired by Paul Bowles’
story “A Distant Episode”, and charts a mysterious
transformation from observational making-of to
inventive adaptation, shot against a staggering
Moroccan landscape.
The true story of the meteoric rise and fall of one of the
most celebrated and controversial sportsmen, Lance
Armstrong. Armstrong was the ultimate sporting hero.
Following a gruelling battle with cancer, he returned
to his cycling career in 1999 with his sights set firmly
on winning the Tour de France. With the help of the
infamous Italian physician Michele Ferrari and team
director Johan Bruyneel, he developed the most
sophisticated doping program in the history of the
sport. This program allowed Lance and his American
teammates to dominate the world of cycling, winning
the Tour an unprecedented seven times. However,
not everyone believed the fairytale... Sunday Times
journalist, David Walsh soon began to question whether
the ‘world’s greatest athlete’ was ‘clean’. And, Walsh’s
costly battle to unveil the truth, saw him risk his own
career and reputation in exposing one of the greatest
deceptions of our time.

Synopsis
Set in the early 20th century, ‘Sunset Song’ begins

Youth (La giovinezza)
Synopsis
Springtime. Fred and Mick, two old friends now
approaching eighty, are on vacation together in
an elegant hotel at the foot of the Alps. Fred, a
composer and conductor, is now retired. Mick, a film
director, is still working. The two friends know that
their time is quickly running out, and they decide to
face their future together. They look with curiosity
and tenderness on their children’s confused lives,
Mick’s enthusiastic young writers, and the other
hotel guests, all of whom, it seems, have all the time
that they lack. And while Mick scrambles to finish
the screenplay for what he imagines will be his last
important film, Fred, who gave up his musical career
long ago, has no intention of returning to it. But
someone wants at all costs to hear his compositions
and to see him conduct again.

Being AP
Bolshoi Babylon
Synopsis
Synopsis
Nineteen-time champion jump jockey AP McCoy
(aka Tony McCoy) has notched up more than 4,300
wins, 700 falls, 40 broken bones and a BBC Sports
Personality of the Year Award in 2010 across a near
25-year racing career. This documentary follows AP
in the final year of his extraordinary career as he
fights to become champion for an unbelievable 20th
time and faces a future out of the saddle. Made with
exclusive access to the Northern Irish jockey, his
family and racing teams for the 2014-15 season.
The Bolshoi Ballet. Symbol of Russia, a world-famous
national treasure - mystical and intriguing. Recently,
however, the ballet company has been in the headlines
for all the wrong reasons. The 2013 acid attack on
the company’s director Sergei Filin, intrigue and
management changes have created lurid headlines.
Director Nick Read gains remarkable access to the
inner workings of the company for the first time as they
move into a new chapter in the wake of the notorious
attack. Bolshoi Babylon gives a voice to artistes and
company members who are not usually in the limelight
in irreverent and candid terms. Combining epic themes
with intimate portraits, and historical dramas with the
untold personal stories of agony and ecstasy that lie
behind every acclaimed performance.

Dark Horse
The Hard Stop
Synopsis
An inspirational and occasionally heart-stopping
true story of a group of friends from a working
men’s club in Wales who decide to take on the elite
‘sport of kings’ and breed themselves a racehorse.
Against all the odds, their young foal, raised on
nearby waste-land, goes on to become a champion.
Until one day disaster strikes…
Synopsis
In August 2011, 29-year-old Mark Duggan was shot
and killed whilst being arrested by armed police in
Tottenham, London. This incident ignited a riot that
escalated into a week of the worst civil unrest in
recent British history.

The Reflektor Tapes
Sherpa
Synopsis
Synopsis
A fascinating insight into the making of Arcade Fire’s
international number one album ‘Reflektor’. AwardWinning filmmaker Kahlil Joseph recontextualizes
the album experience and the band’s creative
journey, transporting viewers into a kaleidoscopic
sonic and visual landscape. The film includes
breathtaking performances, never before seen
personal interviews and intimate moments captured
by the band.
Director Jennifer Peedom set out to uncover
tension in the 2014 Everest climbing season from
the point of view of the Sherpas, and instead
captured a tragedy when an avalanche struck,
killing 16 Sherpas. ‘Sherpa’ tells the story of how
the Sherpas united after the tragedy in the face of
fierce opposition to reclaim the mountain they call
Chomolungm.

La Giubba
New Eyes
Synopsis
Synopsis
This installation piece is the first major collaboration
between British artist Corin Sworn and Canadian
artist Tony Romano.
In a bustling village near Addis Ababa, an Ethiopian
girl becomes aware of strange new feelings that are
both discomfiting and exciting. As her burgeoning
sexuality begins to colour her experience of the
world, it threatens to bring her into conflict with
societal expectations.
‘La Giubba’ follows the intersections of five drifters
over the course of two summer days in southern
Italy. A young Albanian man and his daughter search
for a swimming coach who fled their homeland in
the 1990s, but instead find an Arbëresh community
settled by their countrymen 600 years earlier. Two
theatre actors take on a dubious commission to
increase audiences in the rural south and traverse
the landscape fashioning little theatres of belief,
until a Canadian interloper turns up. Employing
professional and amateur actors, ‘La Giubba’ situates
its nomadic characters within both the stunning
Italian landscape and the history inscribed upon it,
visible and unseen.

Solo for Rich Man
Synopsis
A portrait of teenage escort, Coco.
Synopsis
Inspired by William Gaddis’s novel “JR”, ‘Solo for
Rich Man’ restages a quintet of performance pieces
(including one by Fluxus artist George Maciunas)
from a four-day experimental music workshop for
children conceived by artist and filmmaker Beatrice
Gibson and renowned cellist Anton Likoszevieze.
What begins as a summary of online reviews of
a teenage escort becomes a provocative and
formally audacious commentary on the fluidity of
identities and perceptions of young women in the
Internet age. Indeed, the only thing that’s certain
is that all these people who claim to know “Coco”
may not know anything at all.
