I have known a few people who

This p.tst Christmas, while

for the wide selection of programming, but because of its oystal clear

winds, our aerial got out of whack.
We'd he watching a big football

Quick, change the station. Okay,

So I came hack to Waterloo

Natural Born Killers
Pulp Fiction
Quentin Tarantino has smacked the
peaceniks in the face, proving that
we crave violence and that nothing
delivers a message like the barrel of
a gun. Tarantino's genius is giving
statements on our society without
being didactic, although people talk
about them f(>r vveeks after seeing
the movie. He makes us laugh at
honur and society's aversion to it.
Natural Born Killers combines
Tarantino with Ollie Stone. Yeah, it's
blatant and sensationalistic, hut it
works, unified by Trent Reznor's
incredible soundtrack. The movie
gives new meaning to Leonard
Cohen and Rage Against the
Machine, and the best adrenaline
rush I've had in a long time. And it's
Woody!!!
In Pulp Fiction, it's the dialot,'1.IC
that catches you, from gourmet cot~
fcc to t(x>t massages to Ezekiel. It's
seeing Travolta dance again after all
these years. It's laughing at Marvin's
misfOitune. It's spending days figuring out how everything connects.
Thelma and Louise
Although some t<x>ls may classify this choice as a chick flick, this
movie is an excellent choice for
everyone. It is fast-paced, intelligent, and prof(>und. It is also one of
the few movies to ever star only
female protagonist:-. as main charac-
tcrs, and still achieve recognition
and box office success. While it is
not a feel-good movie, it is not a
man-hater film either. The plot is
honest, and at times, difficult to
watch due to the stark reality it
allcmpts to portray about our society, women's voice, and justice. As
for Susan Sarandon and Geena
Davis- brilliant.
Beauty and the Beast
In the past five years, Disney has
captured new heights of beauty and
art once thought impossible k>r animation. No film does this better
than their second blockbuster in
this new era, Beauty and the Beast.
The plot is rather progressive, and
inspiring as only Disney can he,
and the characters arc hilarious,
charming or evil. Being a huge
Disney fan for my entire life, I see
this new style of Disney not as
treacherous to the old Mouse, hut
as ftu1her validation of the magic of
Disney f(>r all ages. Beauty and the
Beast is animation at its fmest, and
Disney at its best.
Schindler's Ust
A brilliant i<x>k at Gcnnan war prot~
itccr Oskar Schindler, who saved
the lives of 1100 Jews during the
Holocaust by putting them to work
in his factory. Shot in black and
white save one memorable scene,
this film is completely absorbing
from start to finish; its running time
of a lillie over three hours flies by.
Liam Neeson gives an excellent performance as Schindler, while Ralph
Fiennes is absolutely chilling as a
Nazi commandant. llannihal Lccter
had nothing on this guy.
Boyz In The Hood
John Singleton's i<x>k at life in South
Central L.A. is disturbing in its realism. It is the story of two friends,
played by Cuba Gcx>ding Jr. and Ice
Cube, and how their different
upbringings lead them on different
paths. Solid acting all around,
including Larry Fishburne as
Gooding Jr.'s father. If you think
you have it rough, watch this
movie. You'll feel much better
alxmt your lot in life.
LA. Story
Many of you would probably be
inclined to ]XX>lqxx>h this masterpiece, hut it's actually more enlightening than reading the lle;u1 Sutra.
It's the best acting Steve Martin has
done to date. I lis life is believable
and identifiable. The soundtrack
plays a big part in the atmosphere.
The supJX>rting actors enhance the
frightening reality behind this
humourous examination of postmodern American society. L.A.
Story satisfies viewers seeking
humour, romance, spiritual reality
and the truth behind whether
there's really a conspiracy against
them. I guarantee you'll never i<x>k
at sign1msts the same way again.
being hilarious. Trapped in time,
surrounded by evil, low on gas. It's
a cult thing.
Silence of the Lambs
This movie may have been the
biggest reason for the "Vegetarian
lxxm1".
Part psychological thriller, part
honur, and all gore, Silence of the
Lambs delivers it all. Big stars playing bad guys (Jack Nicholson as the
Joker, Dennis llopper in Speed)
were never better than this.
Anthony I lopkins delivered an over
the top performance as flesh eating
Hannibal Lecter.
Unforgiven
Clint Eastwood simply gets better
with age. A cowboy mo-;ie with a
conscience, people either liked
Unforgiven or they didn't. For those
able to get past the usual gcxxl guy
with white hat sh<x>t-; bad guy with
black hat and then get-; the girl syndrome, Unforgiven delivered a
tense thrill ride that never let up
until Clint littered the screen with
bodies. Forget Dirty I larry, Clint

Unforgiven ranks right up there

of his best.

PETE ROBINSON
CORD SPORTS
The Hockey Hawks handed their arch-rival
\X'aterloo Warriors a convincing 7-2 defeat
Saturday night at the Rec Complex. The win
solidifies the llawks in first plan: in the Far
West division. also helped hy the OLJAA
recently handing down their decision to strip
Western of an earlier win over \X'indsor.
More on that in a moment, hut first the
game on Saturday. The Hawks opened the
scoring at the 12:05 mark of the first when
T<x.ld White heat Waterloo goalie Joe llarris.
That was followed six minutes later when
Chris (~eorge put the I Iawks up 2-0 thanks to
a perfect feed from John Spoltore.
The second pericxl stalled slow li>r L1urier.
as Waterl<x> appeared as though they were
st;uting to make a game of it. After applying
some sustained pressure on the llawks,
Waterloo's Sheldon Gilchrist conve1ted a fme
set-up by Greg Allen to make the score 2-1 at
the 5:01 mark. 111e !X>wer-play goal seemed
to lx>lster Waterl<x>'s attack even more; however, llawk goalie Mike Crawford turned
away eve1y chance the Wa1Tiors mustered. In
hindsight. this eight to ten minute span at the
beginning of the second was the only time
Waterloo had the edge in play.
The turning point in the game was at the
10:16 mark. Matt Turek showed a nice touch
in front of the net when, off balance, he
llicked the puck m·er a sprawled Harris and
restored the Hawk lead to two. Turek has had
a knack li>r pnxlucing big goals 1()1" Laurier.
I lis goal against Waterloo last time the twn
teams mel lied a very dose game that the
Hawks eventually won. In addition to
Saturday. he also produced a timely goal
against Western earlier in the year in another
l~1urier victo1y.
Turek's goal was the first of a '' goal run
that Laurier put together, and in doing so
elqx>sed why Waterl<X>. at this !X>int any\vay,
can't be put in the same Clleg<llY as L1urier
and Western. In addition to Turek, Laurier
counted goals from Don McConnell, John
S!x>hore and Bryan Reid. McConnell's goal in
particular was a nice one. Stationed in the
crease, he picked a Spoltore pass out of his
skates and buried the puck he hind llarris.
Mike Dahle rounded out L1urier"s scoring
at the 19:.14 mark of the third. In addition to
the seven different goal scorers George,
S!x>hore and Smitty Kulali>f~ki each counted a
pair of assists. The well-rounded eflo11 was
not lost on I lead llawk Wayne Gowing: "We
weren't happy with the Guelph tournament. .. we wanted a positive result and we got
it. It v.:a., a critical game, in tenns of \Vhere we
wanted to be in the standings ...
What will lx: more impo11ant is Thursday's
game at Western. Western has lx:en ollinally
stripped of their contested game against
Windsor. The end result is that the llawks
now sit three points ahead or the Mustangs
and a win tomorrow will put them up fh·e
heading into the final len games of the season.

IRVING HO
CORD SPORTS
There have been some pleasant surprises as well as some letdowns so
far in the 94/95 season. The new
n1les regarding hand checking, illegal defence and the moving-in of
the 3 JX>int line have cenainly made
a difference in play thus far. A few
rookies have made an impact on
their respective teams while some
early season contenders have
turned out to he just pretenders.
First let's take a l<x>k at some or
the surprises so 1:1r:
Grant Hill
Is he really the next Michael .Jordan?
This guy can dish the ball, relxmnd,
bl<x·k a few shots and. oh yeah, he
can score too. He leads Detroit in
steals in pan due to his explosiveness, which also allows him to drive
to the h<x>p and make some amazing shots. My hel is that he \Viii
become one of the superstars in the
Nl3A but there is only ONE .Jordan.

awhile,
Cedric Ceballos
Ceballos has helped mould the L.A.
L1kers into contenders. He is eighth
in the league in scoring, averaging
23 points per game, and is siHx>ting
51'}(> from the field. As a result, the
l~1kers are third in the Pacific division and are the only team to heal
Phoeni."\ at home this year.
Willie Burton
Who is this guy' Bunon has scored
the most !X>inls in a game this year
(5,1 against his former team, the
Heat) and is sh<x>ting an exceptional12% behind the 3 IX>int line.
Cleveland Cavaliers
The Cavs are on lop of the Central
division without the help of their
centre Brad Daugherty (arguably
one of the top 10 centres in the
league) and the retired Lmy Nance.
Their defence has defmitely been
the key to their success, allowing an
average of only 87.6 points per
game.
Dallas Mavericks
The Mavs got otT to a good start
due to the play of .Jimmy .Jackson,
.Jamal Mashburn and jason Kidd
(see alxJVe). They've slipped of late
due to had defence (avemge of 100
points allowed per game), inex1x:rience and the lack of a solid centre.
Here·s a lew disap1x>intments:
New Rules
The NBA's new rules regarding
hand checking and illegal defence
have undoubtedly slowed down the
game. The rules haven't created
more oflence, hut rather a few t<x>
many stoppages in the game. My
idea of a fast game is one without
technicals being called every few
seconds. One point worth noting,
though, is that. moving in the 3
!X>int line has allowed bigger players such as Toni Kuk<X' to siHx>t the
threes. So t:u· he's already 30 of 83
(36%) compared to last season
when he was 52 li>r 118 (27%) from
3 IX>int land.
New York Knicks
I lave the new hand checking rules
slowed them down' The Knicks
have had an up-and-down season,
and have been missing Charles
Oakley due to injllly li>r the last 10
games or so. They could lx: on the
reiX>UJKI, though, as they're currently on a six game win streak, lx:ating
Cleveland in the pr<Kess.
Golden State Warriors
The Warriors look like they miss
Chris Webber (no offense to
Seikaly ). As a result, they are sec-
ond last in the Pacific divisHll1.
ahead of only the lowly L.A
Clippers who, as a matter of fact,
have lx:aten the Warriors this year.
Chris Mullin has been a walking
bandage so t;u·, missing the season
with multiple injuries. hut he should
be back soon and will he welcomed with open arms by his teammates.
flZbr;)
Dave Kindree - Hockey. Dave has
had a rather frustrating season to
date; however, he had an extremely
strong game against Waterkx>. This
tough dcfenceman had a +4 against
the Warriors and was given the
nomination by Coach Gowing as
Hawk of the Week. Kindree is a
Third Year Honours 13usiness
Administration student from St.
Williams.
Carrie Ostrom - Volleyball. Carrie,
who is co-captain of the Women's
Volleyball team, has had a very
strong season to date. With her
strong JX:rti.mnance in the Waterl<X>
invitational, she earned recognition
as llawk of the Week. In the
Tournament against Guelph she
had 15 kills and 6 digs, and versus
Waterloo she had 23 kills and 9
digs. Ostrom is a Fourth Year
llonours Physical Education student
from Newhllly, Ontario.
