And on the 150th anniversary of Richard Strauss' birth, we celebrate his genius with three sets of extraordinary concerts. They’re presented by a stellar array of conductors and soloists—and the entire Minnesota Orchestra, unleashing its full power in this magnificent music. Gain a fresh perspective on the Strauss you love and discover pieces sure to become new favorites! From Tchaikovsky’s lush romanticism to the enthralling sounds of Prokofiev, Stravinsky and Shostakovich, we take you on a musical journey to the very heart of Russia. Each of these compositions calls out to the soul, igniting passion, joy and awe at the sheer abundance of musical inventiveness from these Russian composers. Traverse the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries with the best of Russian music at these amazing performances. He returns to the podium to lead the dancing Burleske, featuring magnetic young pianist Andrew Staupe. The mood darkens in Metamorphosen for strings, viewed as the composer’s lament for the cultural devastation of World War II. Culminating in celestial harp arpeggios, the ethereal tone poem Death and Transfiguration meditates on the life and death of an artist. He solos in Dietter's Concerto for Two Bassoons, with the second part taken in turn by each of his section colleagues. Framing their distinctive, mellow double-reed sound are Gabrieli's rich brass harmonies and Tchaikovsky's impassioned Symphony No. 5, a meditation on fate that concludes in a triumphal march. On the podium is our former music director Eiji Oue, famed for his charismatic performances. Come celebrate the many moods of a grand symphony orchestra! All the world—especially Orchestra Hall—is a stage when the spotlight is on Shakespeare–inspired works. Revel in the power of music and words, with repertoire from Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn, Prokofiev and Bernstein, Walton and Sibelius, all displaying the Bard’s tragic and comic best. Osmo Vänskä and esteemed guest conductors direct the action from the podium, culminating in Vänskä’s own thrilling rendition of The Tempest. William Walton penned the score for Lawrence Olivier’s 1944 film version of Henry V—and it is pure cinematic sweep. Mark Wigglesworth then leads our star musicians into the medieval forest of Bruckner’s Fourth Symphony. Called “Romantic” by the composer himself, the work is his most popular, and conjures storybook castles, mounted knights and the call to the hunt. It's boot camp for our musicians, too; they have just five days to prepare pieces that no one, including the composers, has ever heard performed by a world-class orchestra before this very moment! Osmo Vänskä leads the Orchestra in three different realizations of the world’s most famous love story. Tchaikovsky’s Fantasy-Overture is lush and romantic, while Prokofiev’s richly dark melodies portend the tragic fate of the starcrossed lovers. In Bernstein’s urban retelling, rival gangs rumble and mambo their way through a score that, in the end, leaves us hopeful that love endures, “Somewhere.” 612.371.5656 minnesotaorchestra.org osmo vÄnskÄ 6 Classical Classical Shakespeare Winterfest: A Winter’s Tale Shakespeare Winterfest: The Tempest Christopher Warren-Green, conductor / Augustin Hadelich, violin Osmo Vänskä, conductor / Lilli Paasikivi, mezzo Joe Dowling, narrator Thu Feb 5 11am / Fri Feb 6 8pm LARSSON TCHAIKOVSKY DVOŘÁK A Winter’s Tale Violin Concerto Symphony No. 9, From the New World A lyrical Scandinavian take on Shakespeare opens the concert: utterly charming, sweetly pastoral music by the Swede Lars-Erik Larsson, inspired by the Bard’s late-period romance. Augustin Hadelich solos in the majestic Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto. Hailed for his gorgeous sound, this young German virtuoso will bring out all the depth and emotion of Tchaikovsky's masterpiece. Our British-Swedish-Russian-German connections finally lead us home—to the stirring New World Symphony of Dvořák, a wonderful showpiece for the Orchestra. The gifted mezzo Lilli Paasikivi, principal soloist and artistic director of the Finnish National Opera, sings the role of the spirit slave Ariel, who helps conjure the island storm of the title. Mendelssohn produced his famous Overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream when he was just 17, and it never fails to delight. Erich Korngold made his mark in ’30s and ’40s movie spectacles, but he also composed remarkable concert music. Gil Shaham (hailed by the Los Angeles Times for his “brilliant, almost ecstatic performance”) has made the Korngold Concerto one of his signature works. We hear two more "soundtracks"—a striking strings-and-brass showpiece by Hindemith, spiced with jazz, and Ravel’s timeless Daphnis and Chloe, written for the legendary Sergei Diaghilev and his Ballets Russes. He mastered both time and space as Doc Brown in the Back to the Future movies—and these concerts are filled with memorable movie connections. We’ll hear the all-important Star Trek medley and other blockbuster hits by Hollywood master John Williams, as well as Holst’s audience favorite The Planets (which influenced many film composers, including Williams) and both Strausses' stellar contributions to 2001: A Space Odyssey. And Clair de lune? Fun fact: it was cut from ©Disney's original Fantasia, but the haunting short film survives online. All this and mindblowing NASA images; boldly go to Orchestra Hall! “When the world seems to shine like you've had too much wine, that’s amore!” On this February night, our love for Italy shines in a concert that showcases her beloved music. You’ll hear music by ever-popular film composers Ennio Morricone (Cinema Paradiso) and Nino Rota (La Dolce Vita, Romeo and Juliet), as well as timeless hits of legends Dean Martin (“That’s Amore”) and Enrico Caruso (“O Sole Mio”). No musical salute to Italy would be complete without transcendent opera favorites by the greatest of the greats: composers such as Puccini (La Bohème, Tosca), Verdi (La Traviata, Rigoletto) and Rossini (The Barber of Seville). For more than half a century, this historic French Quarter venue has been the place to hear the music that made the city famous. The legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band—whose founding members played with the likes of Jelly Roll Morton and Louis Armstrong—keeps the tradition alive. Down in New Orleans they play in a hall with no air conditioning, no concessions and no amenities of any kind. But here, hallelujah, you can enjoy their glorious sound in the comfort of Orchestra Hall. Joining as special guest soloist is our very own artistic director of jazz and trumpeter extraordinaire, Irvin Mayfield. singin' in the rain Don't worry; this nightmare is hilarious—think PDQ Bach or Victor Borge on steroids.
