About Fräbel Hans Godo Fräbel was born in 1941 in Jena, Germany, the third of five children. Events in the tumultuous post WWII years in Europe resulted in the exodus of Fräbel’s family to Wertheim City in West Germany. There Hans’ father and a colleague founded a scientific glass factory. Subsequently, Hans’ father became the controller at the well-known Jena Glaswerke in Mainz West Germany and there he encouraged Hans to begin a Lehransbildung Program as a scientific glassblower. Within three years, at the age of 18, young Hans received his Gzhilfenbrief, a rigorous apprenticeship diploma awarded for mastery in the trade of scientific glass blowing. Among his professors and peers at Jena Glaswerke, he was called ‘Mr.. Fast Hands’ for his extraordinary command of technique and artistry with flame and glass. In 1965 Hans Godo Fräbel traveled to Atlanta, Georgia, in the United States where he took a position in the scientific glass blowing laboratory at the Georgia Institute of Technology. There, he began to further expand his creative education and to fulfill his own artistic expression. He studied art at both Emory University and Georgia State University. His creative glass gained a following among professors, colleagues and friends. Thus an expanding circle of recognition began for Fräbel Glass Art. Encouraged and affirmed by positive responses and economic success, Hans established the Fräbel Glass Art Studio in 1968. It is instructive to note that in the mid-20th Century flame or torch glass was disdained as a valid or ‘serious’ medium for creative or Fine Art. Fräbel’s persistent endeavors and successful experimentation helped to change this narrow bias. Today Hans Godo Fräbel is known as one of the Founding Fathers of Contemporary flame glass art. In 1979, Fräbel’s ‘Pop Art’ sculpture “Hammer and Nails” was exhibited as the feature work in the internationally acclaimed New Glass Art Exhibition. This exhibit then traveled to major museums throughout the world. This international exhibition recognized Hans Godo Fräbel as one of the founding fathers of modern torch work in the world of art. Hans Godo Fräbel Frabel.com Fräbel’s FAQs How do I clean my Fräbel? To clean your Fräbel, use a soft cloth and window spray, such as Windex. Borosilicate glass is one of the hardest glasses in existence and unlike soft and more fragile glass, using household cleaners will not damage it. Use a moistened lint free soft cloth to clean the sculpture. Do not let the moisture drip into the wooden base, as this may damage the base. Do you ship all Fräbel sculptures? Yes, we ship Fräbels all over the world. If necessary, we can build crates to ensure that your Fräbel sculpture will arrive safely. Whenever we ship, your Fräbel is insured against breakage and we will restore your sculpture free of charge in the rare situation that something is broken. How much does it cost to commission a custom sculpture? That depends on the scope of the work. We have done custom sculptures for as little as $1,000 and for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Please contact us to discuss your needs with our artistic director, and we can give you an indication of how much it would be. How do you achieve the opaque look on some of the sculptures? By sandblasting the surface of the glass, we create little indentations in the glass that reflect the glass light in different colors. Where can I find Fräbels on display? Fräbels can be found in museums and botanical gardens around the world. Among the museums that have Fräbels in their collection are: – Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC – Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, NY – King Center, Atlanta, GA – Whitney Museum of American Art, NY What are the most famous Fräbel sculptures? The most famous Fräbel is the “Hammer and Nails” sculpture Hans Godo Fräbel created in 1977. “In the Middle of the Night” sculpture of a dripping faucet is in the Smithsonian permanent collection. In 1987, Hans Godo Fräbel was honored as an Absolut Vodka Artist for the commissioned “Cavorting Clowns”. Andy Warhol and Keith Herring were similarly honored in 1986 and 1990 respectively.
