154 Sutton Fair & Horse Show th AGRICULTURAL & HOMECRAFT PRIZEBOOK - Intro Section AUGUST 6th, 7th, 8th AND 9th, 2009 SUTTON FAIRGROUNDS THEME: “THE HORSE” Page 1 Introduction THE HORSE This year’s theme for the 154th Fair is “The Horse”, how appropriate for our rural fair. Man has been working with and enjoying horses for over six thousand years. The role of the early horse was that of a work animal. Horses pulled guns and other military wagons, worked hard on the land and were responsible for the carriage of goods and people. The power of the horse played an important role in the conquest of continents, the development of agriculture, and the travel of people. The horse of today has been bred and crossbred to excel in specific disciplines such as racing and speed events, sport, endurance, English, Western and driving classes. There are over two hundred breeds of horse and pony in the world. The average horse lover can attend our fair and see a good selection of the most popular breeds in competition and displays. So come to this years fair and enjoy the many classes and displays that will entertain and educate you about our noble friend the HORSE. 154th Sutton Fair & Horse Show August 6th - 9th, 2009 Theme: “The Horse” www.suttonfair.com info@suttonfair.com (905)722-3165 Introduction Page 2 President’s Message On behalf of the Sutton Agricultural Society, it is my privilege to welcome you and your family to the 2009, 154th, Sutton Fair. The Sutton Agricultural Society puts on an event that both educates and entertains, to mix both rural and urban lifestyles. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication from our volunteers and members to put the fair together. I would like to thank those who spent so much time to make the fair such a success, especially after last year, with our very damp grounds. A big thank you goes out to our sponsors and advertisers. Without their support, the fair would not be the success it is every year. The theme of the fair this year is “The Horse”. The horse was an integral part of Canadian agriculture and has become such a domesticated animal. We continuously focus events at our fair around the horse. Let’s see what you can do with this theme and run with it… I would like to encourage everyone from Georgina and the surrounding area to come and enjoy or take part in the best fair in Ontario! We have something for everyone, so please be part of one of the longest running traditions in this area. One other thing… I spoke to the weather person and we are promised four, sunny, warm days for the fair this year! Peter Bunnik President Sutton Agricultural Society Greetings from 2008 Sutton Fair Ambassador Welcome to the 154th annual Sutton Fair and Horse Show. It has been a wonderful experience to represent the fair over the last year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff who helped out at the fair last year, volunteering their time and giving so much of themselves. It is because of such dedication from so many people that we are able to bring the fair together each year. Last year, as many know, it rained almost constantly, flooding the midway and soaking many visitors. We didn’t let the wet weather dampen our spirits however, and some highlights of the fair included the senior and junior fair ambassador programs, Georgina Idol, the light and heavy horse pull, and the derby, to name but a few. This fair encourages so many individuals to take a break from their lives for one weekend to learn about agriculture, and to enjoy the rich farming heritage in Sutton and surrounding areas. I have seen the impact of volunteerism within this community, and was able to experience it first hand through the Terry Fox Run the Sutton Santa Claus Parade, the Remembrance Day parade, and agricultural meetings. Being the ambassador has truly been a life changing and eye-opening experience and I am honoured to have had this opportunity. I encourage each and every one of you to come out and visit us at the fairgrounds this August. We are crossing our fingers for better weather this year. Katie Will 2008/2009 Sutton Fair Ambassador Greetings from 2008 Junior Sutton Fair Ambassador A lot of work, a lot of mud and tons of fun and excitement! Despite the mucky disadvantage this year during the fair, the staff and volunteers had no shortage of energy to keep the fun going! From the cotton candy and Ferris wheel, to the tractor pulls and livestock shows, Sutton Fair has something to offer people of all ages. Taking on the roll of Junior Ambassador this year, I got to see how much time and effort is really put into the making this event, what it really is, and now I see why everyone has such and great time every year! Thanks to everyone at the fair for giving me this opportunity and awesome experience. There is no one I wouldn’t boast about the fair to, because in my eyes, we’re getting better and better each year!
